Before I got to 75%, I thought this book was average. Not amazing but also not terrible. However, the ending ruined the story for me.

This book was a slow burn. From reading the blurb on Goodreads, we know that something bad happened in Hana's life and her father, a senator, was arrested for an accident. But we don't find out more about what happened until about 30% into the book, and even then, we only get a peek of the day Hana's father was arrested. It's not until about 70% into the book that we learn the big mystery.

Here's the summary with spoilers:

Two things that generally bothered me in this book:
Hana says she's picked apart by the media in the flashbacks. But she's a senator's 15 year old daughter. Who has that much interest in senator's kids? There are so many senators, I doubt that media people are that interested in commenting on what senators' kids are wearing, saying, etc.

Not sure what kind of trees they have, but Hana and James constantly park under trees to hide their cars and apparently no one sees their cars. Guess trees make cars nearly invisible to normal humans.

Meet my new favourite character, Hana Yang Lerner, who can fix everyone else’s problem but not hers. Set in an elite high school in Washington, DC, Hana is known as a fixer who accepts to solve other students’ problems and keeps secrets buried. Her reputation is ruined when her dad, the beloved senator, is arrested. She is then hired by an anonymous person called “Three” to follow her ex-best friend, Luce, and teams up with her childhood friend, James, who works as a reporter for the school newspaper. They uncover many truths, including those Hana wished to keep secret.

I am always up for YA Mystery and could not resist requesting this book when I read the blurb. This book was a great page-turner that grabbed my attention from the beginning, and I was interested and engaged the entire time.

The writing was so good, there was never a dull point in this book, and I was genuinely interested in how the mystery will resolve. I also thought the plot was intriguing, with the unforeseen plot twist, fast-paced, and the story flowed smoothly. Three’s identity was a great mystery and kept me guessing. I somehow can predict Three’s identity; however, I could not fathom the reason behind this anonymous client of Hana, and the explanation surprised me. Besides, I also liked the unexpected turn of the story from mystery to parent’s love to romance.

I loved Hana and immediately pulled to her. Her character growth was really well developed. It was never too late to admit and face your mistake. I love this side of her. I also liked James’s character and their guessing game scenes; that was so lovely and cute. There was a bit of romance between them at the end, and I think it was just enough because romance is not the main theme in this book. Luce is such a great friend who always supports Hana in choosing the right path, even though her action does not seem like she cared for Hana in the first place.

All in all, My Flawless Life was entertaining, in which I would recommend this YA mystery to anyone in the mood for an easy read with satisfying twists. Furthermore, I think fans of One of Us is Lying, and A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder will enjoy this one.

Thank you, Times Reads, for sending me the review copy 🫶🏻

I received this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. ARC provided by HarperCollins Canada and Katherine Tegen Books.

At the most elite private school in Washington, DC., whenever anyone has a problem that they need to go away, they hire Hana Yang Lerner.

Hana is a fixer. She knows who to call, what to say, and how to make sure secrets stay where they belong--buried. She can fix anything. Except her own life, which was destroyed when her father, senator Skip Lerner, was arrested for an accident that left one woman nearly dead.

Now Hana's reputation is ruined and her friends are gone. So when she gets a job from an anonymous client called "Three" to follow her former best friend, Luce Herrera, Hana realizes this might be her way of getting back her old life.

But the dangerous thing about digging is that you never know what you'll unearth. As Hana uncovers a dark truth about her supposedly flawless classmates, she is forced to face a secret of her own.

I am always down for a YA Mystery/Thriller and when I read this blurb I could not resist requesting. It did have its moments and I was intrigued to know what would happen next, but it did fall short in some areas for me. I did like the plot and thought it was very intriguing and talked about things not usually discussed. The mysteries were intriguing and kept me guessing, and I appreciated the discussion of privilege that comes with money. It was a very quick read as well which is nice. Some of the relationships were lacking. Hana was so well done and fleshed out, but none of the side characters got the same treatment. A closer look at a few other key characters would have made this book a brilliant read. Another problem with the book is that when the plot came to the climatic points or resolutions it did not have any shock factors. I did like a lot of it but just felt like there could have been a bit more development.

Thank you HarperCollins Canada for an advanced copy of this book.
I was pleasantly surprised. The description on the back of the book didn’t do the story justice. So many wild twists and turns.
The author’s writing flows well and the way she crafts her story and manipulates the reader is flawless (haha, get it). The concept of the story (with Hana being a fixer and Three’s fixes) is not one that I’ve seen done before; unique and well crafted. There is only one predictable part in this book, but that I cannot reveal.
Will be recommending this one to my Instagram followers. Well done!

I accidentally finished this in a day. I wish I hadn't so I could have stayed with the story longer...

It was a bit uninteresting at the start, but around 20% in I started to get hooked. Also, the twist??? LOVED that. My theories were going left and right in the best way possible.

One thing that might be a turnoff is that sometimes it's hard to tell when it's a flashback and when it's the present. To be fair, although it could be clearer, I think that's a bit of a me problem and it doesn't happen that often.

For people who liked this, I recommend If You Could See the Sun by Ann Liang. The concept is pretty similar and I loved both of these books <3

I bought the book because of the cover, as it is absolutely everything to me. And I was so glad to find a good story inside! Very well-crafted book, a captivating mystery with not too much plot twists and some thought-provoking character development. The whole narrative felt very smooth, balanced so that to keep you interested, but not to confuse you with too many events. It didn't even feel cheesy at the end, as it was not super sugar-coated, only somewhat hopeful. And I felt really connected to the main character, she has very similar character traits, which is a tad bit worrisome, but I take that.

Received an “advance reader’s edition” from HarperCollins.

Started off the new year of 2023 juggling between five books! Amongst them, this was the most captivating, so on the third day I decided to stick with this and read to the end.

We’re introduced to the main character Hana Yang Lerner who has become a social outcast, publicly, due to a scandal that affected her and her entire family.

As the story develops, we learn that she fixes other peoples’ problems. People as in, the very friends and classmates that shunned her. Basically a detective, piecing and solving cases for money and/or favors. First world, rich, private school problems.

The fix that Hana wasn’t 100% sold on in the beginning involves her ex-best friend, Luce, ex-friend Logan, with the unwanted help of childhood friend James.

For some reason, I immediately hated disliked Luce. I guess it could be her “I don’t care, but I secretly do” attitude was a turn off for me. Or that the curiosity that Hana had, that baited her to set the foundation to friendship.

Then there’s Logan, though it may seem like he plays a bigger role, there isn’t much depth to his character. Just label him “Mr. Perfect”, but by the end, that label may be reconsidered.

Lastly, regarding characters, there’s James! Wasn’t sure how his character was going to play out *pokes like he’s a still hot steamed pork bun* but he may be one of the only characters I’ve liked. Reading the interactions between them was cute. Boy next door vibes.

I’m not sure if I’m surprised, disappointed or, could I use, racist or bias, that there wasn’t much reference to Chinese culture or dialogue. I only bring this up, due to the mention that Hana’s mom was born to immigrant parents and are first generation in the US. Of course, I’m probably thinking too much into it, but there are so many things that can’t be removed in one generation. Also consider, if the author did add more culture in, Hana and James could’ve spoken one of the dialects and no one would know what they were saying no matter where they were or who they were with!

Between the scandal and the fix; the scandal was predictable though I had other considerations in mind. The fix on the other hand, it took a while but after enough pieces, I saw the bigger picture. It made for an interesting ending.

Only quote that I noted from the book:
"...you've always been good. Though, maybe the way to think about it is that no one is all good or all bad. We're just people, doing the right things most of the time, doing the wrong things some of the time, making mistakes, and doing our best."

There were a handful of minor grammar errors that had me stop, reverse and made me have to re-read those sentences again:

Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's books for the advanced copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This was such a brilliant and twisty read.

After being abandoned by her elitist friends when her dad gets involved in a huge scandal, Hana is forced to the outskirts of the rich social circles she used to rule. She is only let back in when there is someone, or something, that needs fixing, and Hana is just the girl for the job. When she is offered well above her normal rate to spy on her old best friend, Hana gets tangled up in a plot more sinister than she was prepared for, and an old friend just might be the help she needs to get out of it.

I loved that we have an unreliable narrator. It is often used as a fallback for lack of a good mystery, but in My Flawless Life, it only enhanced the book. Even without the unique narrating, the mystery held up well, with several layers to it. It was so messy, taking a close look at the ugly core of the elitist rich and the dark side of politics and money. Some of the plot twists felt predictable to me, but overall, I was pleased with how it came together in the end.

My only point of contention with the book is all of the relationships were lacking. Hana was so well done and fleshed out, but none of the side characters got the same treatment. All of the other characters' motivations and personalities were learned through telling, not showing. A closer look at a few other key characters would have made this book a brilliant five-star read.

Oh, this is SO good, and the best way to read this YA contemporary mystery/thriller is to know as little about it as possible, so stay away from spoilers of any kind!

Hana, the m.c., is a smart character in an intriguing position. Her family has recently fallen from grace, and so she is surrounded by extremely privileged classmates and those who are far from that life, but she doesn't quite fit in either place, and this makes her so compelling. What also makes her fascinating is that readers can never tell how much they should believe her or the characters who surround her.

I loved _If You, Then Me_, so I was thrilled to read this next effort from Woon, and I actually enjoyed this even more. Again, the fun factor - at least for me - was so much about being caught off guard. Readers who can take a similar approach will find the most excitement here, but even those who NEED TO KNOW what they are getting into will still enjoy the ride.

Woon was already on my "you write, I read" list, but I'm even more excited for future interactions now and very much look forward to recommending this one to students for reasons I won't outline here in an effort to keep everyone's experience as spoiler free as possible!

*Special thanks to NetGalley and Katherine Tegen Books for this arc, which I received in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.

Actual rating 2.5. The beginning had me hooked but then by 30%, everything clicked and I figured out the mystery. If I couldn't relate to the victim then I would have rated this higher, but I really can't say anything more without revealing spoilers. Hana was not a likeable character and I felt bad for James for actually trying to comfort her and be her friend again; the same with Luce, I don't know how they stayed friends for so long. The execution of the mystery did not make any sense and I had so many questions by the time the book ended. I did not like how the story covered the theme of actions and consequences and how a simple apology a few years too late can heal all the damage. Thank you Edelweiss for an ARC.

The biggest problem I had with this book was the pacing. It was really hard to get into when the mystery took over half the book to even unfold. Not only that but it wasn’t engaging enough to stretch out. Also I dont know if I’m the only one but I thought there was going to be some sort of magic because of how Hana’s job and Logan’s dobbleganger were introduced but I thought wrong and was disappointed because the explanation to both of those things were lackluster.

Gripping, page turner of a read! I really enjoyed this book and read it in a day because I was so invested in finding out what happened. The story has so many twists and turns, as well as a semi- unreliable narrator so it makes for a very interesting read. Never a dull moment. Highly recommend! This was a wonderful book. Hana’s life fell apart after her father, a senator, had a car accident, so she now works to fix things for wealthy people, hiding details or evidence or finding information… I quite liked her character and she was a bit of an unreliable narrator which I always like. I was kinda not super impressed with Three, but the reveal was done effectively and made it work a lot better. I’d give it around a 4-4.5, so I’m rounding down.

I loved the writing style and enjoyed the mystery and plot unfolding. This book is a beautiful example of a real to life mystery. There is a bit of investigation that leads us back to unveiling the main character’s life. As in the real world mistakes were made and life goes on; what we do in wake of the mistakes is who makes us who we are. The author wrapped that theme beautifully into a wonderful novel.

Thank you to Epic Reads for an advanced copy of this book.

This book was a great page turner! I read it in one sitting. It’s fast paced, and had a good combination of telling the current story but also providing important backstory in a cohesive way.

I really enjoyed our main character Hana and was immediately drawn to her. She’s clever, observant, and obviously struggling with a lot of emotions. I loved being able to see things from her perspective and get her thought process throughout the story.

I definitely didn’t see the major twist coming until it was pretty much in front of my face, and it made me think back to other parts of the book and connect the dots. There was one aspect of that I thought was a little hard to believe/accept that bothered me, but I won’t put that here to avoid spoilers.

Overall this was a great read and I’ll definitely be looking for another book like this by Yvonne Woon!

Keyword descriptors: gripping, plot-driven, dramatic

Woon's story of a high school "fixer" for her peers at the elite St. Francis school is one of tense drama and heart-wrenching emotional catharsis. I was immediately drawn to Hana Yang Lerner, a once rich, spoiled child of a state senator and philanthropic mother. She has since fallen from grace after the a "catastrophic event" that she eludes to throughout the book and a mystery that will keep the reader guessing. She now operates below the radar, serving as a middleman, brokering deals and trades to serve her rich classmates to save them from scandal, hardships, and trouble. When she's asked to take a case involving her ex-best friend, the story reels you into the tense mystery and drama of the world of St. Francis school.

I found this book to be an absolute page-turner. It was gripping, tense, and full of mystery. The story feels emotional without being over the top, and I was left guessing until the very last portion of the book. Woon has created really dynamic characters in Hana, James, and Luce. Many of the side-characters are run-of-the mill richy rich, catty, and heartless students that you'd expect from a story about rich people, but the story itself is so engrossing that this does not matter much, in the long run. I thoroughly enjoyed my time spent in Hana's world, and trying to piece together her history and where the story was taking me.

I would definitely recommend this book to mystery lover

Okay, I give up. I just....don't care. I thought there was going to be some sort of twist that would reign me in, but nothing so far and I am tired of waiting.

But it is probably just because this isn't my genre, not that it's objectively bad. Give it a go if you like Gossip Girl or We Were Liars.

Thank you to @times.reads and @putrifariza for sending me the advance reader's copy of this book. I felt so honoured to read this book!!

My Flawless Life is about Hana Yang Lerner who is known as a fixer as she solved people's problems. One day, she got a message from anonymous 'Three' to fix a mysterious problem but somehow she was stuck in between her past and her task.

Oh my God I didn't think I would enjoy this book??? I love the intricacies and the details this book have which is enjoyable for a book filled with investigations and thrills. Just when I thought the past didn't add up with the story, then boom.... the author serves!!

Though I didn't fond the romance that came almost out of nowhere, I just felt like I love the partnership that happened between James and Hana. Somehow this book reminded me of If You Could See the Sun by Ann Liang.

The contents of this book made me intrigued to flip through the pages and know what would happen next and I'm so satisfied with how the story went! This is such a good YA book and I'm hereby recommending this book to everyone!!

I really enjoyed My Flawless Life! It’s an easy to read writing style with a twisty plot that quickly grabbed my interest. The story is overly dramatic, but that’s not unusual for YA. Some aspects of the book were repetitive and I did predict some of the twists, but there were plenty of things that caught me by surprise as well! I thought the MC was really well developed and I loved seeing her character growth. I would absolutely read a book just about her doing fixes for her fellow classmates 😂 Definitely recommend this YA thriller when you’re in the mood for twists and turns with a side of teenage drama. Thanks @epicreads for the gifted ARC!

I was, quite frankly, blown away by this. It became something unexpected, and it was all the better for it. I loved Hana so much. Her unreliable narration was compelling and constantly kept me on my toes. I loved the twists and turns, and the nonchronological storytelling was seriously effective. The messages of guilt and forgiveness really stuck with me, and everything was just so well done. Sign me up for anything Yvonne Woon writes at this point.

Hana Yang Lerner lost the life she’d known when her father, a beloved politician, was arrested in connection with a hit-and-run that left a woman nearly dead. She still works as a “fixer” though — you have a problem, she solves it for you for a fee — and gets a message from someone who only identifies themselves as “3.” The reason for the name is there will be three parts to the job, starting with Hana having to help her ex-best friend Luz with what she’s working on. But the anonymous texter won’t give any more information than that. Hana obviously doesn’t want to take this job, but with the way things stand after her father’s arrest, the very large sum of money offered for the job means she has to take it. She’s going to have to spy on her once best friend Luz to figure out what she’s working on, and why she would need help…

Katharine Chin, who also worked on Cold and Acts of Violet, does a really nice narration putting readers in Hana’s life, emotions, and thoughts.

Hana Yang Lerner is the girl you go to when you have a problem that needs to go away. She is only let back in when someone or something needs fixing, and Hana is just the girl for the job. She can fix anything, except maybe her own life. It wasn't a 'on the edge of your seat.' mystery, the story was just enough to keep me guessing but didn't really have a shock factor. Some characters and relationships were lacking. Especially, since Hana is so well fleshed out. I think some of the other characters didn't get the same attention. All in all, it was a decent read, and one I'd probably go back to and read again.

Plot twist got me lmao, we love an unreliable narrator. Sometimes that shit go hard, in this case it definitely enhanced the novel quality.

I knew who 'three' was since the beginning and was relieved that the book did not try to overly shove a narrative of trying to figure out who it was into our face? If that makes sense? I actually really like the characters in this one, they vibed with me. James grew on me. Luce grew on me.

The first half of this dragged to me but I think that the later half made for a nice read.

this book managed to be so okay it didn't piss me off a lot but it also didn't excite me, until maybe the last two chapters (but it's debatable maybe i just wanted to finish it already).

i'm not big on predicting ahead just because i don't like doing that but with this book a passing thought was correct 90% of the time, so... if you really want to read something in one sitting and then forget about it, this is the book
