Building My Pack

Rate this book
In a world where my designation is the only thing that matters to society, I choose to hide it. Perfuming as an omega as a teenager forced a more unconventional route of keeping my secret. Participating in trial suppressants, has allowed me to live life as a beta. With a successful career and white picket fence home, all is perfect until the man who I'd hoped to marry one day leaves me for another woman and her pack.

Unbeknownst to the both of us, his new pack stole more than just my heart. A fact that becomes abundantly clear with my reaction to a certain few alphas, allowing them the opportunity to break me even more. What is it they say about storms? Batten down the hatches, or is it stick your head between your knees and kiss your bum goodbye? My name is Bryce Hartley, and I guess we'll find out.

This is a reverse harem omegaverse standalone in which our curvy heroine does knot have to choose for her happily ever after.

3/5 ⭐️ 2/5 🌶

Good:
- plus size FMC
- Younger guys
- Omega creates the pack instead of joining an already formed pack
- Story line is good

Negative:
- I feel like so much of the story was told as what happened instead of showing us. All the best parts I didn’t get to read! The DP with her alphas, the 2nd heat and mate marks are all things I was dying to read but all we are is told they happened.
- also imma need more spice!!

something about the writing wasnt for me. i think it was mostly this author doing the flashback/story telling thing where they tell us what happened instead of guiding us in present time.

I was really enjoying this until around the 65-70% mark when I realized how much I disliked the heroine.

As a character, Bryce was a bit of a doormat. Insecure, unconfident and prone to tears. So. Many. Tears.

Initially, I was impressed with her because of her ambition and drive (professional women aren't common in Omegaverse), but then, as the romances started to develop, I realised just how passive she was in every other part of her life.

She also came across as self absorbed. All five men dote on her from the get go, but she pays barely any interest in their lives, doesn't tell them that she's dating other people, and is just generally quite shady. Then gets mad and bursts into tears when she thinks one of them lied to her (spoiler: he didn't).

It's a shame because it definitely started off well, and there were several unique aspects I enjoyed.

I liked this story but it left me missing more info on the alphas. FMC spent too much time in her head.

Expecting a proposal, instead, Bryce got dumped by her longtime boyfriend after he found his pack. Worse? He still works in her office with the Beta he left her for, making her successful career feel hollow. In fact, her whole life feels empty. She perfumed as an Omega as a teen and her beta parents convinced her life as an Omega would force her to give up her dreams and obey the whims of her Alphas. She has been on suppressants and living as a beta. Now they have stopped working and her Omega instincts are appearing leaving her emotional and open to the scents of everyone she encounters. Especially a few certain Alphas and one yummy beta. For a girl with a plan for her life, Bryce was never expecting this.

I didn't mean to. I have been looking forward to this book since I saw the author announce it in a book group. I loved Brandy's White Trash Trilogy and couldn't wait to get my hands on this book. I planned to savor it. Instead, I read it in one day. It was too good to put down. Bryce is one of the most relatable characters I have encountered, especially for an Omega. She had a run of bad luck I could identify with and then all of a sudden, she was living my dream life. Talk about weathering the storm and finding the rainbow. Her Alphas and beta were all just incredible. Sexy, caring, protective, and understanding. I dare anyone to pick a favorite; mine changed by the page. They saw Bryce. Truly saw her, and helped her to thrive. I love how they opened her eyes and proved her worth to herself. Watching her self-doubts melt away was great. Her days went from believing she was happy but mostly going through the motions to a fulfilling, spontaneous, passionate life. Really, she should send George and Stephanie flowers. Her new list is much better than the old one.

I loved everything about this book. Wonderful characters, great relationship building, character chemistry, and a solid story. It was well written; pulled me right into the story and didn't let go until the final page. I loved it and now hope for more. It would be a shame if this is the only Omegaverse Brandy writes.

So I am prefacing this that I read a fair amount of RH and M/M omegaverse and it is one of my favorite tropes ever. I enjoyed this book but it wasn't one of my favorite omegaverse reads or favorite by this author. Again, I liked it, it was a good palate cleanser but it was missing a couple things for me that for me are critical for omegaverse stories. If this author writes another omegaverse story I would definitely read it (I mean I devour most of her books anyways, so there's that haha).

First let's talk about what I loooooved! I really enjoyed Kit and Santiago, we got the most airtime with them so I connected the most with them overall. I loved how loyal and thoughtful Kit was and how flirty but possessive Santiago could be (but not the most alpha in the room haha). Well I did like Kennedy, Waylen, and Mitch, we didnt get as much time with them. That's why its so hard for these standalones if they are fleshed out enough, especially with a pack this size. I think if this had been book 1 of a duet or something, I probably would have given it 5 stars, would have removed the epilogue and it would have been spectacular. I think because some things felt rushed and glossed over I couldnt give it a 5 stars. I was super excited about a super alpha nerdy guy with Kennedy but for some reason I didnt feel like he let his true self show as much in the chapters we got to see him. I just wanted more ❤️

I think they biggest thing for me was the bonding was off the page. For me the coming together with the MC and the ppl of the pack is great, but the bonding is so much more special, shouldn't be fade to black or in this case isn't even on the page to begin with. Honestly it was a bit of a let down but as someone who hasn't written one before I can understand. The pack is so important and the family aspect that the bonding to me is what seals it and really makes them a pack forever.

I thought this was a sweet and again refreshing read. This author does that a lot for me, and I greatly appreciate what she does. She ensures the characters really see the female MC and understand her and help build her up when her confidence and self esteem falter or decrease. Its beautiful to see. Again I just had wished some of the mainstays of omegaverse romances was not talked about in the epilogue and we got more of the group as a cohesive pack (like seeing them after the big event at the end together, even if a BBQ at their new place with some smexy and romantic moments. I mean it just felt like the ending was a little abrupt and because the author created such wonderful characters I was dying for more pages 😊

Sweet but Short

I enjoyed this story but it felt like it could have been longer. I loved Bryce, hated her ex and his new girlfriend. I liked what we got to see of the alphas and Kit, but we didn’t even meet 3 of the pack members until halfway through, while meeting Santiago and Kennedy in the very beginning. I liked the overall story and the spice level, I just would have appreciated more time spent and more balanced POVs from the alphas. I’ll definitely read more from this universe!

Not fun. Just strange ,convoluted and confusing .

DNF at 41%.
Ok, first don’t read if you aren’t a omegaverse fan.
If you aren’t into omegaversa you are gonna be lost in this like I was. If your not already clued into this sub genre, your gonna be left feeling like you were dropped into the middle of a conversation and expected to understand what has been said and answer accordingly .
Ok, ⚠️ spoilers ahead ⚠️
First if this is what an “omegaverse” I F’ing HATE the too !
Why ? Shifterless shifters is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard of ! It’s like saying I can’t drive ,no license, but I’m a driver ? I can’t cook, I burn 🔥 everything but I’m a cook ? No,not right . I mean I can always learn to drive or cook . At least in theory, anyway . But if I’m NOT born with an animal ,or bitten by a were, I’m . Not . A . Shifter!
I mean these ppl aren’t even latent or dormant. There’s . NO . Animal. Inside ! Nothing. Nada. Zip.
So they aren’t shifters of ANY kind,no animals, yet some how they have “animal instincts “ ? Seriously?
So many, many things true shifters can do and have ,that NONE of these faux ones do ,and yet this imagined link to real shifters seems to rule their insane little lives.
Not shifters and yet they have this weird need to form “packs” ( can have as few as two ppl in them ,supposedly) and have pack rankings even if they AREN’T in a pack. Huh?
Yeah, that’s right ,your classified as a beta even if your pack less . Huh? Ok, I get you can be born with an “alpha” personality and an omega is really just an empath ( or is supposed to be) but a beta is a rank NO ONE usually has w/out being in a pack! And why are these ppl w/out an animal inside of them driving them to need a pack ,building one ? And what kinda animals would they have if they did ? I ask because NOT all animals want or need to be in a group. Nothing about this makes any sense . And there isn’t any real world building to help. gods, this made me hate reading . It really, really did. I had break off and start re reading a fave book to remind myself why I like to read. Seriously, I did.
And, and no omega/empath should effect alphas only !
None of this s hit made sense and the h is a dumb doormat who is obsessed with telling us what she’s wearing and how she wants to redecorate her house but not much else . I didn’t care. She was boring AF. 41% and she’d only been on two dates, one with Santiago and one w/Santiago and Kennedy together . Nothing interesting really happens but they do kiss and pet and get her engines going ,only to tell her they were leaving the country for a while and drop her off home with a kiss on the cheek. W. T. H?!?!? Does she stand up for herself and demand they finish what they started ? Not be a ussy/unt tease ? Of course not! She’s a doormat ,remember? Noooooo. She goes into basement and spends the rest of the night working on redecorating! Isn’t that what you’d expect ? Huh?
Next day as she’s rushing to work she’s called and told her office was trashed by her d bag and his skank . But she’s the one fired because they leave a message on her wall supposedly telling the world she’s an omega . And malicious gossip, left by a holes destroying your office must be true,so she’s fired for not disclosing this. I mean her massive powers “may” have swayed some “alpha” buyer, so in a “C Y A” move ,she’s out. She goes home and starts to take out her hurt and anger on some rose bushes. A landscaper suddenly appears and stops her. Supposedly,he’s a young alpha too. He felt about as much an alpha as ,I’d think a shot glass of vodka poured into a gallon of water would feel like booze. She lets him in to tend her self inflicted wounds and thinks “Well,if I end up “unalive” ( yes, that is seriously what it said ) ppl will have seen him come into my house at least. Or something like that . Was “unalive” supposed to be funny ? Or really poor editing. So again proof of how much they aren’t shifters. Shifters can hear or smell lies and have faster healing . He asks her to come to a club that night to listen to him play with a band . I’m so tired of this book and when I see I’m now at 41% and she’s not in a relationship with anyone really ,no bonds have been formed ,no sex has been had ,no real RH progress had been made . I HAD to quit. No more of this writer for me. She can be good but this was awful. TLDR Deeply confusing and frustrating plot if your not already an omegaverse reader . Doormat h who tells more about clothes and decorating than anything else. At 41% not romantic in the slightest.

**Little notice: I may or may not put spoilers in it. I try not to do it, because I don't want to spoil the fun, but I never know beforehand what I will write. And sometimes I write something, without realizing it is a spoiler. So, I just want to give a little hint/warning. In case you don't do spoilers. ;)**

I would say, it was a good, solid read. Omegaverse is my favorite genre, so, I read everything I can get in that genre. I have read the AntiLove Bookclub series of Brandy Slaven before, and I loved it. So, when I saw she is writing Omegaverse now too, it was a no-brainer.

Now, after reading it, I can say, it is really nice written and I enjoyed the book and the journey with Bryce. That's why I rated it with 4 stars. Though, it's not nearly my favorite book. It has steam and likeable characters. But the story itself, or more, the “drama” is shallow, and a lot of things are glossed over. I'm never a fan of time jumps between events. I want to see the whole picture and all. And not just glimpses. So, the ending was anticlimactic for me, after the dangerous situation. I wanted to see the bonding and a heat with all of them together. I wanted to see her ex-boyfriend and his new woman get what they deserve. But they got away easily.

And the entire story/steamy scenes were too tame for me. It's not a complaint or anything, it's just a fact, that, even if I enjoy a sweet, cute love story, I like it more with kinks and just steamier, and more dominant alphas. It's hard to explain, what I mean, exactly.

Everyone has his own tastes, and this one is for me good, but just cute. It's not a bad thing. This book was a cleanser for me, after reading a book series, that wasn't easy to read for me. (Not because it was bad or too heavy. And I don't have any triggers. It was only exhausting for me in some way, and so it took me longer to finish it)

Now, I still hope the author will write another one. I definitely will read it. :)

I think my biases effected my enjoyment of this one. The black moment was a one-two punch of ‘oh gawd, of course fake drama is the black mo- uhhhh tornado!!’

Plus the author did a bunch of skipping forward and telling what happened previously which took away opportunities to be immersed in the story.

The whole leaf in the wind, wanderer Beta going from ‘gotta move along’ to ‘I. Am. All. In.’ was disappointing.

The singer and the drummer alphas kept getting swapped in my mind and spent a lot of time trying to remember which one was which name and their personalities didn’t really shine past ‘alpha!’

There’s ONE line about the Beta not normally being attracted to men but watching the two alphas butting heads in a mild dominance battle did things to him. I prefer more MM interaction than one offhand, never acted upon sentence. Smacked of an author trying to straddle the line and not piss off the die-hard anti-swords crossing readers.

Her entire life, Bryce did everything in her power to build a life on her own merit. The moment her career seems to be on an all-time high, everything starts crumbling down around her, starting the day her year-long boyfriend dumps her. Now Bryce starts to question everything about herself; did she really make the best choice when she decided to hide her omega destination? And what should she do about the alphas sniffing around her?

Building my pack is a pleasant sweetverse standalone; I enjoyed watching Bryce crawl out from all the rubble around her and starting to embrace who she was and what she was capable of. I liked her personality, and I couldn't help myself from rooting for her to gather as many men as she could to love and cherish her.

wow

This was so well written and such a nice cutesy read. I took a star off because the ending was rushed and I couldn’t believe it tied off as fast even after the huge bomb dropped about the suppressants. Then the fact she bonded to all of them and how that was left out it was really disappointing. Honestly I’d take two more stars off because of that, but this was just such a nice hallmark-esque book I couldn’t. I’d only like to say that it finished too soon and felt incomplete.

officially giving up on this author

So far I’ve read 4 of her books and they all start out great and then devolve into… nothing. There’s very little story once the FMC and men start dating or bonding, whatever and then she just ends the books with little to no closure or insight into what happens. I’m left with more questions than answers and tbh, most readers of OV WANT to see the bonding, we want to see the relationship play out post bonding, we don’t want oh she’s trapped in a burning building and the next chapter to be an epilogue set in the future.
So annoying

I love love love Bryce and her guys. This may be Brandy's first omegaverse but I think she killed it. Lots of steamy and spicy scenes between Bryce and her men. What I also like most about this book is how its not like all the other omegaverse books that I've read. Bryce is new to being an omega and doesn't go to the omega center to find her pack or even meet an already established pack. She builds hers. I also didn't see that twist at the ending coming either. Great job.

I love me a good sweet omega verse

This book is soo good! I didn't want it to end! All of the characters were just amazing! If you want a good sweet read with a little bit of drama! But some hot smexy time and reading about a group of people who fall for each other and a FMC who finally finds her men and falls back in love with herself at the same this is the story for you! Awesome story I lived every second! ❤️

I really enjoyed this sweet omegaverse. Bryce is a great FMC, curvy, sweet, and a successful businesswoman. She never wanted to be an omega and fought hard her whole life to fit in as a beta. Unfortunately she gets her heart broken by George, who leaves her for another girl, joining another pack. Santiago, Kennedy, Mitchell, Waylon, and Kit come along to help her slowly find her way. Really enjoyed this stand-alone. The pacing is great. Really loved these characters!!

Really good but not quite what I expected

She is a omega disguised as a beta until something starts to go wrong with her suppressants and she finds herself interested in a few alphas. She is also dealing with a lot of self steam issues due to her ahole ex and her parents. It was interesting follow her liberating herself and build her pack, finding a strong sense of self in the process. Despite being very steamy it has no sword crossing and that was disappointing.

Loved this book!

I don't even know where to begin to say how much I loved this book. I didn't want it to end. I loved the characters and they were so well developed. Plot driven but with spice and build-up, just the right combination. Now I want a follow up story with babies and pets!

Great omegaverse story

Fab read with great characters and a strong story! Bryce, the fmc, is fantastic, I loved her feelings about her body and how much more comfortable she became with herself throughout the book.
If would have liked a bit more interaction between the two different alpha groups, but that's only a minor want.
Great read!

Alpha Hotness!!

This book was one I had a hard time putting down. Having her make her own pack was awesome. Usually you read where the packs are already made and woo her. It is an awesome change. It’s awesome how the guys boost her confidence also. Love this book and would suggest others to read it.

love this one

I love this book as it truly is about learning to love yourself. We should all stop letting others dictate how we should feel about ourselves. Each of us like the character must keep learning about how to be the best version of us. If you love yourself it’s easier to get that others love you too.

The ending sad face

I WAs so in this story line ! And I loved the build up but the author made like 3 amazing story arcs to build the guys relationship and then never followed through. Then the storm omg yes but then 5 pages later the end !?! What the helll !!!!! I needed more not some cut off hurried ending!

Living life as a beta, she has a successful career and is happily living with her beta boyfriend when he leaves her for another woman and her pack. 5 men enter her life and show her that it is good to be an omega. A bit slow in the middle and maybe 5 is a bit much in terms of mates but a solid RH omegaverse.

Bananas? Really? Personal problem, I know but that's not sexy at all.

19% in and I don't like any of these people. Well, it's more like they're all just little piles of personality traits instead of people. I'll give it a bit longer but it's not looking promising. Nope, not digging the vibe at all.

I give up. Might give it another go at some point.

Another lovely Omegaverse book!!

Bryce spends her life trying not to be an Omega but a spiteful woman who is jealous of her ruins her life and pretty much forces her into a heat and into the arms of her future pack!

This was a nice easy read. I enjoyed how Bryce's pack came together but I would have loved to have seen some real consequences for her former boyfriend/new girlfriend!

Looking forward to diving into more books by this author.
