Finally, the Dunes Paw Pack has reclaimed their place as the leading den of Beta Primes. Their new young alpha, Mark Helsing is finally in position to restore order and cement his pack’s reign in the Prime Wolf Order. For Mark it should be the most profound moment of his life.
But it is not.
Even as the newly appointed leader, he finds himself without the one thing he thought he was sure to have. A love to call his own.
Grieving the loss of the one he loved, Mark is growing dangerously close to losing everything he worked so hard to attain. Forced to choose a mate to ensure not only the future of his pack, but his bloodline, he must align himself with the one woman he vowed to never give his heart to again.
With a ticking timeline and a new darkness unleashed into his city, will he risk it all or rise to the occasion?
Author's Note: Beta Rising is a standalone within the Beautiful Nightmare series. Readers of Beautiful Nightmare and Awaken will be pleased to see some of their favorite characters return, and new readers will dive headfirst into a world full of wolf shifters, vampires, and a host of others. This story is a light enemies-to-lovers, second chance, paranormal romance complete with a happy ending.
Well, at least that's how I'm described in the confines of my everyday life.
Writing has always been second nature to me. I spent my childhood creating short stories and my collegiate years writing for the campus paper (Go TERPS!) Jump twenty years to the present--I'm still writing. At my day job I spend most of my time writing capability briefs, white papers, proposals--you name it.
Then one day it hit me. It was time to access my own creative power and bring to life the characters lurking in my mind.
I hope you enjoy my first book, Beautiful Nightmare. It has everything you'd look to find in a paranormal romance-urban fantasy-new age novel. Vampires. Wolves. Love. And so much more!
Firstly let me say you’ll understand/follow this (particularly the start) a lot more if you’ve read the Nightmare series. I haven’t and I was confused as hell early on. This was despite the author putting a helpful breakdown of supernaturals and their hierarchy. It soon gets easier and before I realised it I was engrossed and enjoying the read.
I was a little sceptical about the “mistake” but I decided to just go with it. And I was enjoying the read and intrigued by where it was going. But then the sex started. Now I’ve no issue with sex but I like balance and after awhile I just started skimming to get back to the story. Problem was there was so much sex I ended up skimming a huge chunk of the book.
Overall it’s interesting. I liked the characters and the story but I won’t be continuing on. I could be doing it a disservice and if so I apologise. But I’ve read countless series like this before and I end up getting frustrated. Feeling like I have to drag the story out from under the filler (usually sex). But I can see why it has a lot of good reviews.
I voluntarily read a review copy kindly provided by the publisher and NetGalley.
I know I say this in every review I write of an L.C. Son book, but I love this series so much. Paranormal Romance is one of my favorite genres and I love it when there are vampires in the stories. I don’t read many shifter books, but I might start now. Did I mention that this book is super hot? Spicy, spicy and I loved it!
L.C. weaves a story of loyalty, honor, and love. I like the way the hierarchy of the wolf pack is portrayed with the actions of the wolves and their behavior toward one another. I love that there are many different “creatures” in the story. There are different kinds of vampires and vampire/wolf hybrids. It makes for a richer story with all their different back stories. This is very well done.
The world building is so good. There are places most of us have heard of (Louisiana, New Orleans, etc.) which makes the story more real. If I was walking in the French Quarter, I would expect to see these characters going about their day. That’s a big part of what makes these Beautiful Nightmare stories so good. It just feels so real.
I love the journeys taken here. I can only talk about Mark’s because it would spoil a big twist otherwise. Mark starts out a brokenhearted, grieving man who can’t even come out of his room. He is so deeply depressed he can’t do his duties as the new Alpha of the Beta Primes. Hell, he can’t even make himself get up and shower. He’s in pretty bad shape.
But, because of an oath he made, he now learns that he has to choose a mate anyway. And, choose her now. He has to secure his bloodline in order to remain alpha, even though it’s so soon after his betrothed died and untimely death. He decides to follow Jackson’s wishes. As his Prime Alpha, Mark only wants to prove himself worthy. Just as in real life, sometimes it’s the things we think we can never do again that actually pull us up and give us a new start. He chooses a mate. And that’s when all hell breaks loose.
The crux of the story is Mark and his new mate and how they are trying to find a way to make this thing work. The spice is hot! It is written very well also. We get this front-row seat to an unlikely pair working up the nerve to doing the thing they must do, even though neither is sure they can. There is a tenderness too. But, when it gets right down to it, the scenes perfectly portray Mark’s inner struggle. I love how this relationship evolves into more than just a mating ritual.
There is a great ending and there are some fantastic twists and turns along the way. I thought I had it all figured out but I was completely wrong. I love when that happens!
I highly recommend this story to fans of paranormal romance, urban fantasy, shifter romance, vampires, and super spicy romance. Beautiful Nightmare continues to be one of my favorite paranormal series. I can’t wait for the next story!
I just have to share what is written on the dedication page. I love it so much!
“To everyone who survived the last two years. To everyone who lost loved ones. To everyone who witnessed the rise of turmoil, hate, sickness, and pain. Know you’re not in this alone. Keep going. Find your pack. And always know, no matter what…we rise and fall… together.” L.C. Son
This is not really a werewolf book. Yes, it centers around Weres but many other supernatural beings play very prominent roles. There are vampires, sirens, a son of the devil, zombie like undead beings, a mortal or two as well as witchery. To be honest, that had me confused. I had a hard time remembering who was whom and what their roles were.
As I kept reading I realized this was basically a mating book. The pack’s alpha had to have a mate to keep an ancient curse off his pack. That proves to be easier said than done as the alpha’s chosen mate is suddenly a heap of ashes … and the clock is running down. He has very little time to deal with his grief and then take another mate before the curse takes affect.
Ahhh, but his true mate turns out to be someone he hates, someone he can’t trust. Why? They have history together. They were childhood sweethearts and playmates who were meant to be together but suddenly torn apart, each thinking the other didn’t want them. But where does the truth lie? There will be lots of duplicity. There will be lies, betrayals and spells cast.
This book has it all … heartbreak, learning who your real friends are and coming to terms with your enemies…. And there will be pages and pages of love scenes. And be warned, they are graphic and detailed.
I didn’t read the previous book in this series and wish I had. I think it would have helped me understand better all the different supernatural beings and their roles.

Let me start by saying, I came into this book reading none of the other Nightmare Series books and was very confused and lost at the beginning.
The author gives you a legend to use to determine supernaturals and who they are, their weaknesses and such, but I still felt like it took a bit for me to understand what was going on without reading the prior books.
With that being said, this book was quite interesting, I enjoyed the depth to the characters and the spice once it started was hot. The world building was amazing and the author kept the story going with twists and turns throughout that threw me for a loop.
Overall, definitely a good book to read, though I would recommend diving into the other books in this series first to have a better understanding.
Shifter stories are always a hit or miss for me. So while I was hesitant, I gave this one a shot because I've heard a lot of positive buzz about this author and the blurb really drew me in. Man am I glad that I did! I really enjoyed this book and can't wait for more. In fact, I plan on going back and reading everything within the Beautiful Nightmare Universe while I wait for the next book. I love how Defiant the FMC is and how the two MC's overcome the obstacles in their relationship that have been created by others. They decide that early on, they are only going to uphold their responsibilities if they work as a team. I am also a big fan of twists; this book has plenty of them.
I couldn't put it down. Once I started reading it, I just couldn't stop. Good romance. Fast paced and not a lot of unnecessary dialogue about trivial things that don't add to the story. My kind of book. It sticks with the characters and it's about them.

This was a good book!!!! I will say I'm never a big fan of Character names that are so close its confusing to know who we are talking about and when and with the three D's It was hard to get through in the beginning and know are we talking about the brothers are we talking about the female. That aside I did find the beginning of this book to be a bit "Clunky" There is so much happening you need to understand a lot of characters and where they fit very fast (I'm sure had I known and read the previous series this may not be the case) That being said if you can make it to Chapter 5 the book takes off it's Steamy it's intriguing it keeps you on your toes and you feel for the characters as they continue on. I am so thankful that I got to read it before it's out so I can watch everyone experience what I just did and will for sure be picking up The other books in the Beautiful Nightmare Series and the official release copy of Beta Rising!!
We have a lot of drama. Mark is in love with Braelyn, but when he losses her he stops worrying about his pack. When Prime Alpha Jackson shows up at his door he needs to make a decision. He must decide on a mate before the full moon. What will happen when the one who he has done him wrong turns up? Can Claudia prove her innocence? Can she win Mark back? Everyone is against her? Family history goes both ways with all the characters. Can they stop the monsters that are invading there city? I will say the ending could have been better, it left a lot of unknowns.

Now this was one amazing book I have ever read in my time on bookstagram, all I can say is I need the rest of them like now, now I loved it, loved Mark from start to finish from what he went through to where he is now, got to live an alpha right. There was nothing to fault at all, nothing at all, the sex throughout the book was amazing, yes there was quite a bit of sex but not complaining there. Beta Rising for me is Definately a book I will be going back to as a loved it so much. I really want to read the rest the now, when are they coming out.
This book is part of a series but I read it as a stand alone. It includes a description and hierarchy of each supernatural, which was helpful is understanding the Beautiful Nightmare universe. Kudos to L.C. Son for the phenomenal world building which felt authentic and captured my interest early on.
There are lots of secrets, lies and betrayal contained in these pages but it made for a complex, interesting tale that kept me engaged throughout. The story is told from Mark's point of view and I was rooting for him as he had to overcome loss and grief all while trying to keep his pack safe. I was happy he was able to have his happy ending despite his earlier heartbreak.
Overall I enjoyed the story but as the author herself suggested, its probably a good idea to read the other books in the series to really get a better understanding of the characters. I also had trouble keep up with the terminology so I had to go back to the legend a time or two or three!
What an amazing read! I read the book in three hours flat, I could not put it down!
I'm invested in the Beautiful Nightmare series... And I have not missed out on reading any of the books in the series... I especially love it when other protagonists from the first books get their own books and stories... This was one such book and story...
I've liked Mark and Brae from the beginning, and was devastated when Brae was gone at the end of another book... So to see Mark's journey back into the light, and into his own as an Alpha was amazing...
I also love it that I got to see some of my other favourite characters in this book... Jackson 😍 and Chartreuse and Brian and Dacari...
My only peeve with this book is that there's so much steam, and that is not for me... I give the author the benefit of the doubt thought, probably this book needed the steam to depict the bond an Alpha has with his mate...
I can't wait for the next installment of the Beautiful Nightmare series...

This was a fantastic page turner. The world building is really good and and really sets you up to be totally immersed in the story. There is a mix of shifters and vampires too. This is story is about love and loss and hope and about second chances. Mark’s struggle is well portrayed- having to prioritise his duty over his grief.. There is plenty of steam too. There are some plot twists which I loved as it kept things interesting. If you’re a fan of paranormal romance you’ll love this.

Outstanding read with plenty of action throughout. Throughout this book this happens then that happens, certainly kept me gripped throughout. Looking forward to the next one
Ok so first off, I wish I had realized that this book was part of a series. I was lost regarding a lot of the characters during the beginning of the book. But, I really liked the story and I definitely believe I need to reread it after I have read the first part of the series. I feel like I will end up loving this series once everything clicks into place. I like that this is not only a werewolf story but it involves other supernatural beings. I’ll update my review once I get a chance to read the other books but still loved it.
Beta Rising is a paranormal romance novel in the Beautiful Nightmare series by L.C. Son. This is a standalone novel but is part of an interconnected series. This is definitely a five star read for lovers of light enemies-to-lovers shifter romances with sprinkles of steam.
Mark Van Helsing is a 22-year-old werewolf leading the Dunes pack in Louisiana. He is still reeling and mourning the sudden loss of his beloved vampire fiancé, Braelyn Dortches. The young alpha doesn’t get long to grieve before his Prime Alpha, Jackson Nashoba, delivers the news that evil creatures have been lurking nearby pack lands. Jackson insists that Mark place his duty to the pack as a priority and take part in the copula ritual where his wolf will choose a new mate. He needs to strengthen the pack by taking a mate and continuing his bloodline. The problem, however, is that his wolf chooses Mark’s first love that betrayed him and the pack years ago.
Claudia DeVeaux fled the Dunes pack years ago after being accused of stabbing a fellow pack member. She was recently captured and brought back to pack lands where a mix-up occurs and she stands before Mark at the capula ritual. No one is happy about the pairing since Claudia is a traitor and a direct descendent of the treacherous witch, Chartreuse Grenoble.
Somehow, someway, they both have to make this connection work between them. There are secrets, lies, betrayals, twists, and turns. Tragic loss and heartbreak. The truth is ultimately revealed but it takes a long time to get there. This book will definitely put you on an emotional roller coaster and keep you engaged until the very end. I was really pleased that this book was a standalone and resolved by the end.
I enjoyed seeing this snap shot into the chaos that happened after Braelyn’s death. Mark is pulled from his despair, forced to deal with the evil that’s taking over his city.
There’s a lot of information that is woven into this story, so it’s easy to get lost in the details of you aren’t fully invested in the story. I loved seeing the subplots and how everything was interwoven.
Everyone is grieving, trying to move on with their lives, and accept the impossible choices that they had to make in this world.
I think this is one of my favorites, and was really well written.
I am blessed to be able to fall into the Beautiful Nightmare world early. This story follows Mark Helsing and his struggles to keep his pack safe while dealing with loss, politics and possibly a new love.
You will fink Mark dealing with a terrible loss and his emotions. He is struggling and wonders if he can recover from it. Mark has to step up and be the leader for his wolves. If not, he will be responsible for the curse returning and his wolves will be at the mercy of the moon phase. Can Mark overcome his grief? Can he betray his love? Can he save his pack from the nightmare that is occurring? These are all questions that will be answered and maybe a few new questions will pop up......
I loved this story. Grief is such a huge emotion that is one of the most difficult to deal with. Mark not only has to deal with his feelings but he is responsible for his pack and their well being. The weight of the world could be felt while I was reading and LC Son does a great job pulling you into the story and keeping you engrossed. Claudia was an anomaly that I wasn't expecting and I loved her role in this story. Their love story was beautifully written and the twists at the end....CRAZY.... I look for forward to reading the next installment in the Beautiful Nightmare Universe. I'm sure we will see more of our beloved......and not so beloved characters. This story gets 5 stars
This book drew me in from the beginning. At the end I was kinda wishing that I had read the others in the series first, but only because this one is so good. I loved going on this interesting journey with Mark and Claudia, and a journey it was. Well written with some drama, suspense, action and romance (wink), it definitely had me coming back for more. Excited to read more from L.C Son. Good job.

I loved this book! I'll admit I wasn't as excited for this book as I should've been. That's probably because we've been a bit removed from the main characters for a while--but I truly loved this book!
I was so happy to see Mark again. I feel like a hen happy to see the chicks coming home to roost. I've seen Mark mature and grow into this fabulous character and it has been amazing! That said, this book starts off HEAVY in grief. I think I teared up during the first three chapters. I could literally feel his pain! Believe me you will want to cry too! Understandably so.
It's been a while since I've read the main characters of the series, but this book brought me right back in! I think it works for new readers too because the author does a good job bringing us up to speed without weighing down the story.
The plot was strong, the romance was believable and steamy. It really gave that young love vibe in a mature setting, but it wasn't overdone. Seeing how Mark and Claudia came together was sweet with a lot of rough patches to endure. Now Miss Claudia-- I WAS NOT READY! I wasn't ready to like her is more like it. If you read the other books its easy not to like her--but it just goes to show you other people's perceptions are just that--other people's perceptions. At one point I did wish there was a dual POV, but this was Mark's story and I appreciated hearing, seeing, and feeling what he felt. I think I got to see another view of Claudia from his POV and I truly came to enjoy her more than I thought I would. Yes, Brian, I was skeptical like you.
If I had any criticism it would be I want more of their story! I felt like there's more to Mark & Claudia's story. There were a few new twists introduced and the whole new monster thing is a story on it's own. And with knowing her bloodline--I won't spoil it but trust me you'll be happy like I was! I believe Son can belt out another book or two from this couple. I just want more of them!
Last, I loved the set up of the other books--Breaking Curses & Broken Moon! Dacari and Brian gave me all the feels every time they were in a scene together.
I am happy to have received an eARC and this is my honest review.
This book is great. There’s a lot going on, and it can get complicated pretty quickly if you don’t pay attention, but that’s a good thing in my opinion. The series is really interesting the writing is good, the characters are complex and have believable relationships and dialogue with others. I am looking forward to where this series is going next.
5 ⭐️s= Perfect story, exciting, engrossing, well developed complex characters, solid plot with few to no holes, descriptive environments and place settings, great mystery elements, realistic dialogue, believable reactions and behaviors, loved this story so much I’d buy it.
4 ⭐️s= Great story, highly entertaining and enjoyable, exciting storyline, well developed characters and settings, a few discrepancies but nothing that can’t be overlooked. Believable actions and reactions, realistic dialogue, a book I would consider buying.
3 ⭐️s= Good but not great story, noticeable discrepancies, grammatical and or spelling errors, undeveloped characters or unbelievable behaviors but still readable. Nothing majorly wrong with the story, just not interesting enough for me to continue. Would not buy the book.
2 ⭐️s= Not offended by the story, but not interested enough to finish. Unbelievable characters, poor writing, many mistakes, big holes or discrepancies, many spelling or grammatical errors, characters not believable, unlikeable or TSTL.
1 ⭐️= Offensive, extremely poor writing, horrible characters, victimization, gaslighting, blatant abuse, unnecessary violence, child endangerment, or any other highly objectionable behaviors by Main characters. Would never buy this book, and do not recommend it to anyone.

I was moderately invested in this story at the beginning of the book. The premise of the copula ritual and the world building were unique and intriguing. However, I quickly lost interest due to the rather confusing plot and lackluster romance. Sometimes—particularly during the last half of the book—I had little idea what was going on. The scenes seemed disjointed and just thrown in to attempt to add more excitement to the book.
The writing was also stilted and awkward in places. My least favorite part of the book though was Mark. I couldn’t stand him. He has to be one of my least favorite heroes ever. His unending need to talk about his previous love was extremely off putting. I felt like Claudia was a second choice, and his lack of faith in her was tiring and overdone. Claudia was definitely far too good for him.
Overall, this book was confusing and lacked the chemistry I look for in a good paranormal romance. I do not recommend it.
*I received an ARC of this novel. This is my complete and honest review.*
This is the first book that I have read by this author. I really enjoyed the world she created and the characters that she created. This story is very original and intrigued me that I am going back to read the other books out so far. This is a series and definitely can be read as a stand-alone.
The characters were written beautifully from the minor to the major characters they had depth, were complex, and brought angst to the pages. Grab your tissues because you will get the sniffles but it is so worth it. Mark is strong, handsome, and swoony. Claudia was a spitfire and I fist pumped her strength. They were complex and steamy and how they blossomed together was captivating. This was a heartwrenching and heartwarming read. I'm looking forward to reading what's next.

I will admit, I have not read other books in this series which made the first 30% of this book difficult to get through. Despite a nice definition sheet at the beginning of the book, I struggled to remember all the names and keep people separate. Therefore, I highly recommend going and reading the previous books first!
In the middle section, I did find myself understanding more what was happening and when you accept that the plot was mainly based on sex/mating with minor story development, it turned out pretty enjoyable!

I was very excited to read this book to visit with favorite characters! It's time for Mark to move on and choose his mate to be the leader for his pack and surprise it's Claudia. Now with that said there are twists and surprises and well that's all I want to say because I don't want to give anything away, cause where's the fun in that. I will say the author does a great job building her characters and their story, I felt like I was there watching it all go down. It's definitely a must read addition to the Beautiful Nightmare books and one you'll love!
A big thank you to NetGalley and the author for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This book is a stand alone but I think is connected to a series. I have not read any of the connected series, and I was quite lost. There are lots of people thrown at you quite quickly. This was sort of confusing, and I didn't understand the world view at all. I didn't even get the title. The main characters were fine-Mark and Claudia did well together on their own, but Mark got easily swayed when he was around others. I wanted to like this book, but just found it okay. 3.5 stars
An enemies to lovers story. There's plenty of drama and steamy scenes. There a plot where betral from supposedly friends are exposed. Mark had a crush on Claudia when they were younger. A friend sabotaged their relationship and caused their break-up. Then mark fell in love with another woman, Braelyn, she killed. He mated Claudia to save his pack from a curse. As they got to know one another again, Mark discovers the truth of Claudia's breakup and also who was behind killing his friend and Braelyn.

There seems to be a lot happening in this dystopian world of vampires, were wolves and zombies! This story is a bit different than the usual; where mates can be found among all of the differing species; but the good guys are still good, and the bad guys (and gals) can be very bad! This looks to be the continuation of a series where the ghouls are quite nasty, but the romance is quite hot! Enjoy this series!.

This book was a good read. Although I enjoyed it, I wasn’t a fan of how this book started. It introduced a lot of information very quickly and then the pace of the book abruptly slowed down. I think they could have introduced the background information in a better way instead of throwing it all at you in the beginning. But over all it was a decent book.
Side note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for a honest review
