Fast Feasts: Quick, easy recipes with a Middle-Eastern twist

Rate this book
As we've all been cooking more for ourselves lately, it's become commonplace to run out of ideas or feel fatigued from spending too much time in the kitchen. In Fast Feasts, John Gregory-Smith puts flavour firmly back into the kitchen with a selection of quick and easy recipes, all featuring his signature Middle Eastern twist, which will make you feel excited about cooking again.

The book is packed with exciting meals that are full of flavour and look really impressive on the plate. The best thing, they are all super simple to make, using accessible supermarket ingredients so everyone can feel confident cooking them. Think gooey mac cheese, funked up with rose harissa, ready to rock in under half an hour, wickedly good chicken shawarma and chips - a recipe John picked up from his favourite kebab shop in Lebanon, and a delicious Nutella borek. As well as full recipes, John includes cheats on how to make a simple meal sing, from jazzed up mayos, quick sauces and zingy spice mixes that you can keep on hand for later or whip up in a few minutes as needed.

Chapters include mid-week lifesavers, working from home lunches, banging brunches, easy entertaining and more. So whether it's killer comfort food, tasty mid-week meal or a fuss-free dinner for friends that you're after, this is the book for you.

4☆ A Hearty Cookbook

Fast Feast is a Heart-warming Cookbook with lots of delicious recipes that are Easy to Follow and has beautiful photographs to accompany each recipe.

The ingredients are measured in several metric weights making it so much easier as there is no conversion needed.
However some of the ingredients may need searching as alternative options may be required ie, molasses in the UK is Treacle.

The book is made up of different sections such as:
* Everyday Easy, * Easy Entertaining, * Comfort Food, * Low and Slow, * Working From Home Lunches, * Desserts.
So you can see there is plenty of inspiration to sink your teeth into.

I just wanted to point out the only thing missing is, there isn't a guide to tell readers if the recipe is Gluten free, Vegetarian, Vegan etc.. for example I expected that the BAKED SWEET POTATOES w i t h GREEN TAHINI was potentially vegetarian but once I read the description...bacon is added to the ingredients. I know it might appear a minor oversite and a little picky but to some cooks it's an important guide.

Overall Fast Feasts is a delicious and Hearty Cookbook with a Middle-Eastern Fusion.

Thank you to Welbeck Publishing UK and Netgalley for this copy which I reviewed honestly and voluntarily.

Another 5 star book from John Gregory-Smith. This book is filled with the quick and delicious recipes that we’ve been used to by this chef. New recipes that have been doing the rounds on instagram and delighting my taste buds as always. I just loved the bits where John gives us different options for dips, mayonnaise and hummus. Great book. Go get it! And if you haven’t yet what are you waiting for? And this chef has a few more books too and they are all 5 stars!!!

Fast Feasts is a collection of 66 recipes with a middle eastern twist that John Gregory-Smith has been cooking for his friends and family over the past few years. He is on social media, dancing and jumping around like a small child (his words) if he likes the taste of something.

After the introduction from the author, there is a list of store cupboard middle eastern staples. The book is then divided into 6 main recipe chapters:
- Everyday easy (12)
- Easy Entertaining (12)
- Comfort Food (11)
- Low & Slow (11)
- Working from home lunches (10)
- Desserts (10)

The Everyday easy recipes can be made in under 30 minutes. One of the recipes has a tip for defrosting to make the sauce creamy but nowhere did it say the dish could be frozen so I was a little confused. Easy Entertaining includes lots of sharing recipes and Comfort Foods are simple homecooked meals that take longer than the everyday easy recipes.

Low and Slow are quick to prepare and generally cook over many hours, though some are ready in under 1 hour. Home lunches include salads, soups, and cheesy wraps. Finally, there are desserts; some are quick and some have to be frozen or chilled overnight.

Also included is a dinner party combo section that lists recipes from the book that go well together for various times, such as brunch, romantic, and mid-week for friends.

The recipes have both imperial and metric measurements for the ingredients. The steps are set out clearly and each recipe includes a colour photograph. At the end of each chapter, there are tips for ideas such as how to dress a salad, dips, 5 ways to flavour roast chicken, 5 ways with roast vegetables, 5 ways to flavour mayo, and pimping ice cream up.

If you like middle eastern flavours in everything that you cook then this is a good book to have on your shelf. I'd certainly like to try the Chorizo ragu with pappardelle, Afghan chicken curry and the Ferrero Rocher ice cream.

I received this book from Netgalley in return for an honest review.

Fast feeds promises the reader quick but exciting, impressive looking but easy recipes. It's chapters are set up in the themes of easy, entertaining, comfort, low and slow, working from home and desserts. It provides a list of stable ingredients to have in the cupboard and combinations to aid you in dinner party planning. I felt like I had seen quite a few of the recipes in a similar way else where but there was enough inspiration for us to mix up our family favourites a bit, What I really like is the list of five that you get at the end of every chapter - five ways to dress your salad, dips for dunking, ways to season your roast chicken, varieties of roasted vegetable dishes, ways to flavour mayo and how to pimp your ice cream,

Quick everyday staples with a middle eastern twist. Lots of different spices, more lamb than usual - great ideas for shaking up the way you eat every day. Every recipe has a photo, and the recipes are super easy to follow. This is a great addition to my regular rotation - standouts include some of the chicken recipes and salads. The least appealing chapter to me (though I didn't make them) was deserts. This would have been a 5-star book but it doesn't contain nutritional information.
