For three years, women have been disappearing—and eventually turning up dead in the small bayou town of St. Augustine, Louisiana. Police detective Beau Hebert is the only one who seems to care, but with every witness quickly silenced and a corrupt police department set on keeping the cases unsolved, Beau’s investigation stalls at every turn.
With nobody else to trust, Beau calls in a favor from his friend on the FBI’s Mobile Response Team. While LAPD detective Kara Quinn works undercover to dig into the women’s murders and team leader Matt Costa officially investigates the in-custody death of a witness, Beau might finally have a chance at solving the case.
But in a town where everyone knows everyone, talking gets you killed and secrets stay buried, it’s going to take the entire team working around the clock to unravel the truth. Especially when they discover that the deep-seated corruption and the deadly drug-trafficking ring at the center of it all extends far beyond the small-town borders.

the setup… Detective Beau Hebert is trying to investigate the latest in an alarming series of unexplained deaths of young women in St. Augustine, Louisiana the last three years. But with a corrupt police department and legal system thwarting his every move, he’s worse than nowhere. He reaches out to his friend Michael Harris, an FBI agent with the Mobile Response Team, for much needed help. They mobilize in nearby Lafayette and quickly determine that this will be one of their most challenging and dangerous assignments because no one in law enforcement wants them there or to solve any of these crimes.
the heart of the story… St. Augustine is what you get when criminals, law enforcement and city leaders decide to team up. Even FBI Special Agent Matt Costa and his outstanding team are severely challenged as normally they have the cooperation of the local police who welcome the help with confounding cases. Trying to covertly investigate and protect Beau’s involvement was nearly impossible but not totally so. LAPD Detective Kara Quinn’s undercover experience was invaluable as she’s a chameleon with fantastic instincts, able to blend in and read people skillfully. Normally the job centers around figuring out the bad guys. In St. Augustine? Figuring out the good guys was tougher than navigating their bayous.
the narration… I’m continuing to enjoy Fortin’s excellent storytelling skills and she was effective here at providing voice distinctions for lots of characters with speech dialects and age diversity.
the bottom line… I felt edgy through the entire story because the team was so exposed and vulnerable, especially Kara who had several tough encounters. The mystery of who killed all these young women was confounding and when it was revealed, I was stunned. But, it was so fitting considering the number of people in leadership with either dirty hands or blind eyes. Still, there were a few more surprises I had a sense of but had me shaking my head. This is the ultimate in police procedurals and political navigation as the team rose to the occasion. I was also pleased at how Matt and Kara are navigating their personal relationship with all the pitfalls that entails. And, the bayou setting brought all the atmosphere I expected…alligators, humidity and unique charm.
Seven Girls Gone by Allison Brennan Quinn & Costa series #4. Thriller, cop procedural with a touch of romance. In a small rural town, seven girls are dead. The FBI mobile unit is there to investigate the rumored corrupt politicians and police. Kara tries a couple local watering places wearing what locals might find acceptable for a low country summer evening. She’s an excellent undercover cop who good at getting people to talk. But the threats are as real as the danger for the FBI and the informants.
Thrilling and scary in its collaboration in coverups, this story leaves chills. The FBI is efficient and effective in the end, but they face intimidation and alligators. A bit of relationship diatribe in this book too but it’s only about 5% in whole. Enough for those of us that want it. Thrills and suspense well done.
According to the author there will be at least two more in this series, the next scheduled for January 2024. I can’t wait to read them.
This is a well-written, entertaining, fast paced, romantic suspense novel. It has a strong and capable female protagonist, vividly described settings, murder, mystery, intrigue, suspense, relationship drama, and a satisfying conclusion. This is the fourth entry in Ms. Brennan's outstanding Quinn & Costa series, and can be read and enjoyed as a standalone. I listened to the audio version of this novel, and the narrator, Ms. Suzanne T. Fortin, does an excellent job depicting the characters and their personalities.
Seven Girls Gone is the fourth book in this series. Kara and Matt investigate the case of seven girls dead and missing after they were at the Magnolia Inn. Some of the bodies turn up in the bayou. Kara and Matt suspect corruption in high places. This was a very thrilling read full of twists and turns. Thanks NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC that will be published April 25, 2023!
“Seven Girls Gone”, (book #4 of Quinn & Costa series), by Allison Brennan
generous 4 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This was my first book by this author, even though it’s book #4 of a series. When I was at 40% I ordered the first 3 books, hoping to enjoy them. I don’t think that there was any spoilers in this book, but if there was I doubt I will remember. I thought that this was a compelling story. I was immediately hooked on it. I loved the dynamics and interactions between the characters. But it’s not a book of action. There are lots of dialogues. They practically never stop talking. But at least the dialogues were entertaining and gripping. I really didn’t want to miss any word. Some reviewers complained that there was too much romance. I guess my edition was edited and toned down or I was totally oblivious to it (there is a sex scene after 70% and some sweet talking in the last chapter, but I thought it helped to make the characters feel more human). The conclusion was quite riveting, but felt rushed. Overall I thought this was very entertaining. The author mentioned that he drew the concept of this story from the true crime book “Murder in the Bayou”, by Ethan Brown, but this book is completely different.
Seven Girls Gone is the fourth book in the Quinn and Costa series. In the small town of St. Augustine. sheriff Beau Herbert.calls an old friend Michael from the Navy who works with the FBI’s mobile response team along with Cara Quinn and Matt Costa, Jim and Ryder together they investigate the case of seven dead young girls after they were at the Magnolia inn. After going over the evidence that Beau has collected the team suspects that they are dealing with corruption on a wide scale. Allison Brennan vividly examines some of the issues that young women face in a small town and the .effects it has on them. Shocking and heartfelt Brennan handles the story with skill and empathy, yet builds the tension slowly towards the kind of jaw dropping plot twists that had me gasping aloud.. I would like to thank NetGaley the publishers Mira Books and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion
Book 4 in the Quinn & Costa series, again narrated wonderfully by Suzanne T. Fortin, brings the Mobile Response Team to St. Augustine, Louisiana. A place I never want to go. Alligators, oppressive humidity, water moccasins, and a bunch of crappy people. There are also some quite likeable people there too, I should add. But the focus isn’t on them of course.
Lots of missing girls, lots of shady, crappy, corrupt people, and one cop, Beau, who really wants to know who is behind all of it. He calls his friend from the Navy, Michael, from the MRT and off they go to investigate and solve the crimes. Beau’s grandma Toni is fabulous. Wanted to make sure I didn’t forget to mention her!
This is definitely not my favorite book in the series. Still good though, and bonus, Catherine is only on some conference calls!! There are many extra characters in this book. It’s a bit hard to keep them straight and they kind of blend into one another at certain points. That is definitely a huge factor into not liking this book as much. There isn’t a whole lot to distinguish between the slimy characters so they get jumbled in my head.
Still a good listen, even though I didn’t always know exactly who was doing what. I really enjoy the main characters of the MRT, so if you have decided to give the series a try, still include this one!

My favorite setting: Louisiana Bayou My Favorite genre: Mystery My Favorite author: Allison Brennan My Favorite book of the year: Probably
I was really sad when Brennan's Lucy Kincade Series ended, but the Quinn and Costa Series is shaping up to be just as good. Kara Quinn is a very different heroine from Lucy, she is very interesting with a lot of different layers. The romance between Kara and Matt Costa seems to have hit a rough patch in this one, which is not surprising given that Kara has no idea what a true relationship is like. But Matt is in it to win it and He. Won't. Go. Away. The mystery has lots of suspects and lots of different motives and it sometimes appears the story could go a different direction from one page to the next. There are threats and danger to a lot of people, including our Team. I loved watching how the Team peels back the layers of this mystery to the baddies and the why.
Beau Hebert loves his small Louisiana town. He left the Navy to become a detective here to be close to his aging grandmother, but after the death of the old mayor a few years ago something changed and not for the better. A new mayor, a new police chief and unsolved murder and drug deaths are plaguing this small town. Beau contacted his old friend from the Navy, Michael Harris, who is now an FBI Agent, for help with solving the murders of seven young women, all but one prostitutes, and drug users connected with the Magnolia Inn, a brothel. Beau wants help, but the rest of the police department would rather none of the murders would ever be solved.
Small towns all have their secrets and St. Augustine is full of them. Small towns also don't like outside interference and when Matt and the FBI Rapid Response Team show up, people shut up and the police slam the doors in their faces. Kara goes undercover keeping a low profile and works her way in to try and discover what is going on. The corruption is deep, and the drug trade has a strangle hold on this small town and so far, anyone who has talked to Beau has ended up dead.
My thanks to the Publisher, and Author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
Loved this ride... You read have to keep it together reading this book; a few times i wanted to strangle some characters! Awesome mystery here and im looking forward to reading more by this author.
Girls are dying in the bayou...Quinn lends a helping hand getting to the bottom of this mystery. Stay sharp when reading this, a lot of moving parts. Solid 4 stars!!
Seven Girls Gone is the fourth book in the Quinn and Costa Series, I haven't read any of the other three books in this series and I enjoyed it as a stand alone. You can bet I will be checking out her other books. In a small town called St. Augustine, LA seven girls have gone missing or have been found dead, and all of them had last been seen leaving the Magnolia Inn. Police Deputy Beau has been investigating the young girl's disappearances and brings in his friend and FBI agent Michael and his colleagues Matt and Kara to help solve the mystery. He suspects that someone high up is involved, possibly even one of his own. Such a captivating look behind the dark curtains of small town politics, where corruption runs deep.
Thanks to Net Galley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this ARC for an honest review
Police Detective Beau Herbert is disturbed and frustrated with the St. Augustine Police Department he works for in Louisiana. His investigations and convictions are thwarted at every turn, and he knows there are dirty cops working there so he reaches out to his friend, Michael, one of the members of Matt Costa’s FBI Mobile Response Team for help solving the murders of seven girls, one his crime informant. Michael, Kara, and Matt are kept busy looking for a way in when their help is rebuffed by the police department. They find evidence of corruption and dereliction of duty and, but they have ways to work around, but they have to be careful because it’s obvious someone in power doesn’t want the cases solved.
Each of the team members uses their unique talents to help solve the case, Kara fitting in undercover, Jim with forensics, Matt working the higher ups. It’s an intense situation with all having to watch their backs not knowing who they can trust with law enforcement being involved in the corruption. It was a gripping mystery; one I didn’t want to put down!
Allison Brennan is one of my favorite mystery authors! Seven Girls Gone is the fourth book in the Quinn & Costa series, best read in order to understand the character relationships, like the romance between Matt and Kara. I like that the team is getting closer, appreciating each other’s quirks and talents, and really starting to mesh. The mystery is wrapped up in a nail-biting, action-packed conclusion! I’m looking forward to the next one!
I alternately read and listened to Seven Girls Gone and recommend either version. The audio was a pleasure to listen to with Suzanne T. Fortin performing. She did an excellent job with all the voices, male and female. I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed. An e-copy was kindly provided by MIRA in exchange for an honest review.
Hmm. Something was off with this book. Not only was there a hitch in the relationship between Quinn & Costa, the mysteries failed to grip me entirely.
Maybe because it reminded me a bit too much of the real life "Jennings 8". I'm not sure. But there was something that just didn't kick into gear until the last 75-80% of the book.
Somehow the build-up and introduction of the story went on and on for at least 50% of the book. At that point, Kara would have been under cover and working the case for quite some while in the first three books. The team would have swooped in and started working, but instead it took what felt like forever to even establish the fact that they were there to solve something.
This was a very different approach. I didn't like it as much.
I still do like the characters though. A lot! But this is in spite of the rather lacklustre performance of the narrator. I felt like she was "off" too. She sounded unengaged and a bit bored. Not at all right for the gravity of the actual story. In fact, for me, the whole thing didn't actually come alive until Kara and Matt (finally) had some smexy time again. Then there was finally a spark in the story, writing, and narration.
Aside from that, the only time I felt like the story had real tension was when Officer Asshole was taking part of a scene, spreading discomfort and harassment vibes around him, like a bad odour. He was, in a way, the best written part of the book. Really well executed bad guy to hate!
The twists were also well executed, when they showed up. You could say, the final sprint over the finish-line saved the book for me - but maybe not enough to raise my score from a mere 3 stars. Sorry.
Seven Girls Gone by Allison Brennan is the fourth in the Detective Quinn and FBI Agent Costa Series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Harlequin - MIRA and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – May contain spoilers from previous books) Under Assistant Director Tony Greer, Special Agent Mathias Costa runs the new Mobile Response Team at the FBI. The goal is to travel to locations which have minimal law enforcement and offer their assistance. The team consists of Matt, analyst Ryder Kim, former Navy SEAL Michael Harris, forensic specialist Jim Esteban, and Zack Heller, a white-collar crimes expert. LA Police Detective Kara Quinn has been an undercover cop for 12 years, and since she is cannot return to LA at the moment, she is on loan to the FBI, and assigned to Matt's team. Kara and Matt have a "thing" going on. Forensic Psychiatrist Catherine Howard is back working with Matt after taking a leave to deal with her sister's death.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Women are being killed in the small town of St. Augustine, Louisiana. Beau Hebert, a police detective seems to be the only one who cares. He is sure that witnesses are being silenced (one way or another), and that the police force is corrupt. He doesn't know who to trust. He calls his old Navy friend, Michael Harris for some advice.
Instead of advice, Michael and Kara show up at Beau's door, with the entire Mobile Team of the FBI on their way. Beau isn't sure this is what he wanted, but eventually realizes that it may be the only way to get justice for the dead girls.
But the town has a lot of secrets, and no one wants to open up. Talking gets you killed in this town. The team has their work cut out for them. Between the brothel, the drug-trafficking, and the corrupt officials, they are thinking there may be more than one murderer.
My Opinions: Well, the fact that I felt this book was a little long comes as no surprise. Every book in the series is a little long. There is, perhaps, a little too much extraneous details that we don't really need to know (example....Mimi's history with her husband). However, the book was really good, and it moved at a fair pace.
I'm not a fan of stories about police corruption, but this book had a lot of other things going on as well, so it was just one piece of the puzzle...the entire picture was great!
I am getting used to Kara, and although I still think she's a little reckless, she was abiding by the rules in this one, and it made a difference. I actually am starting to really see that this team has become a family.
So, overall, I still felt the book was a little long, but it was good.

This book was so boring. I should’ve DNF but I really thought it was going to be better. Way too many characters. No connection to victims which almost makes you not care about solving the murders. Way too long murder mystery-thriller. Almost 500 pages? Insane. Kinda upset cause I really wanted to like it.
There are a lot of suspects and characters in this one, so some time is spent setting it all up. But, then the story flies! Another exceptional story in this excellent series.
Corruption runs deep in St. Augustine in Louisiana. It is a small town with corrupt cops. With cold cases mixing with current murders, it is questionable as to whose territory should handle things, local cops or the FBI. Definitely a battle of jurisdiction.
LAPD detective Kara Quinn is in St. Augustine and is hoping to remain incognito for as long as possible. Able to assume many looks by donning various disguises, her approach to finding the killer of several women differs from that of Matt Costa of the FBI and local police detective Beau Hebert.
Time is of the essence as danger is at every turn. Lots of pieces, like the most complicated of puzzles, and Kara is often overwhelmed while working hard to put things together. Meanwhile, things continue to grow more intense between Kara and Matt, with the sexual tension between them ready to explode.
Page after page the intrigue becomes palpable, and with a jaunt of action in this book, it truly was a stellar read. I went on to read The Missing Witness, book five in this fabulous series.
Many thanks to Harlequin Trade Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I found this to be a fast-paced and entertaining romantic suspense novel with strong writing and a satisfying conclusion. I really enjoyed the capable and compelling female lead, and the vivid settings made it easy to picture every scene. There was a great mix of murder, mystery, intrigue, and relationship drama that kept me hooked from beginning to end.
I am enjoying the Quinn & Costa series and Seven Girls Gone is a great addition to it. It is book four, and although you can read it as a standalone story, I recommend this whole series. Detective Beau Hebert is investigating a string of unexplained deaths and/or disappearances of young women in St. Augustine, Louisiana over the last three years. He is being not getting anywhere, being stonewalled and knowing that there is corruption within the police and the courts. He calls his friend, Michael Harris, an FBI agent with the Mobile Response Team, for help. They arrive in nearby Lafayette and realize that they will get no help from the locals, and that this is a challenging case. With LAPD detective Kara Quinn working undercover to dig into the women’s murders and team leader Matt Costa officially investigating the in-custody death of a witness, Beau might finally have a chance at solving the case. The only problem is that is you talk, you disappear or die.
I have to say that listening this this book gave me a real creepy, crawly feeling. Several of the characters (some police officers) were greasy and disgusting and I wanted to reach in and smack some of them. How Kara kept her cool is beyond me. I really enjoy this series. The characters are well developed and the plots intriguing. Trying to figure out who the good guys were was difficult and the fear of talking made this story even harder to solve. Corruption is a huge part of this story, greed, power and crimes that were far reaching all made this one interesting, gripping, but harder to figure out. The reveal was jaw dropping, but it made sense. This is also a romantic suspense story and we continue to see Kara and Matt trying to have a relationship while working together. I like that aspect of the story, as it seems quite realistic. Overall, this was a gritty, fast paced, police procedural with great characters and well developed story line. I definitely recommend it. If you enjoy audiobooks, Suzanne T. Fortin does an excellent job with this one. She is able to give voice to a variety of characters of different ages, genders, accents and dialects. I recognized who was speaking without hesitation. Her pace, expression and emotion were spot on for this story.
It was interesting what Beau's call for help brought about and accomplished. At the start, you could tell that Beau was frustrated, he knew things were wrong in his town but not sure how to fix things. With his call to an old Navy buddy that changed. Once Michael and Kara showed up things started to move quickly. Kara noticed something Beau didn't as he was too close to things and there was more going on than what he thought.
By slowly picking away and peeling through the layers they got to the bottom of things and boy...there were some crazy things going down, some bad apples doing bad things. By the end of the book things are better for the community, the bad apples gone and hopefully they can heal!
I have made the unfortunate mistake of devouring this series so quickly that I have caught up to the author and now have to wait for the next release patiently (I am, in fact, not patient at all and am going to live in agony until the next book releases.)
All I can say is another wonderful addition to this series! I loved seeing Kara back doing undercover work - it’s so fun to read her adopting new personas while also seeing her learn to lean on her team more and more each case!
If you are looking for a fast-paced, thilling read, look no further than this one. This can be read as a stand alone, but I recommend the whole series from the beginning. This is book #4, and it is the best so far in the series. There is no doubt that I am a fan, and I cannot wait for more. This is the latest book in the "Quinn and Costa" series, and I am so sad that I am completely caught up!
This time around the FBI's Mobile Response Team head down to Louisiana. One of the team members, Special Agent Michael Harris gets a call from an old friend in the Navy who now works as a local police officer. He is dealing with unsolved murders, evidence disappearing, a lot of fear, and no one is listening him. He needs help, so he calls in his friend. Agent Harris heads down with Detective Kara Quinn to see what is going on. This is the start of a case that starts out as murder, but has a lot of unanswered questions and everyone is in danger. Special Agent in Charge Matt Costa brings in his team to help solve this case.
What I really like about this series is that every case is unique. Each team member plays a pivotal role and the cases show how important each team member is to solving the case. The story moves fast in this one, as it does in each installment. I couldn't put the book down! I love Detective Kara Quinn - there is still so much to learn about her. I also enjoy seeing more of each character as we get to spend more time with them.
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for the advanced reader copy of this book - I really appreciate it! I am not-very-patiently waiting for the next book in this series. If you love a good, solid thriller with a mystery, as well as strong elements of romantic suspense, pick up this series. This book releases on April 25, 2023. Once you start this series, you will not want to stop!
Each time I read a Quinn and Costa book, I marvel at the intricate plot threads and how the author does a masterful job of bringing everything together at the end. This book is a must read for fans of this series and for anyone who wants to read a book that is part suspense/thriller and part crime procedural. It is well-written with well-developed and dynamic characters that help the story to flow well with a fast pace. The setting is the Louisiana Bayou and I learned a lot about the place, especially the habits of alligators in the swamps. It is a perfect setting for a great whodunit! The plot is centered around a police deputy in the small town of St. Augustine, LA and how he needs the help of the FBI’s Mobile Response Team to find out what is happening to the young women who are disappearing in his town. A crime wave seems to be rampant there and Beau Hebert calls his friend and FBI agent Michael Harris to assist him in finding out who is responsible. Of course, Michael enlists the aid of his colleagues, so the whole team shows up to unravel the mystery of the disappearances and murders of so many young women. I love this series, especially the character of Kara Quinn, a quirky and intuitive detective from LA who always has a unique perspective that ends up leading to a solution. I really enjoyed the dynamics of the characters and how they have grown and changed throughout the series. With a remarkable fast pace and plenty of intrigue in a complicated plot, the author does a masterful job of creating and then revealing the multiple layers of the mystery. I loved the unexpected twists and the red herrings as I tried to solve the mystery along with the team. With a tight plot and sharp dialogue along with wonderful characters, this is a book not to be missed. It is part of a series but can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone. This book investigates the murders of 7 girls at the Magnolia Inn … which is a hot spot for selling sex and drugs. It seems as though the police have turned a blind eye to these murders and any leads on these cases have gone cold 💀
The residents of St Augustine, Louisiana know everything about everyone .. are not so welcoming to newcomers .. and also ensure that secrets stay HIDDEN 🤐
This story of small town corruption, murder and crazy plot twists will keep you on edge throughout! I cannot wait to read more from this author! This is the fourth book in the Quinn and Costa series! I did not know that it was part of a series and I was able to follow along without feeling lost!
BOOK RATING: 🖤🖤🖤/5
Thank you kindly to @_mira_books_ @harpercollinsca @htpbooks @netgalley @abwrites for my advanced digital copy in exchange for my honest review! This book releases on April 25, 2023!
This was a good book! 👏🏽👏🏽 Brennan weaved a complex mystery that really had me thinking and trying to figure out who done it.
At certain points I wasn't sure the good guys would be able to save the day! Lol But they did. 🙌🏽🙌🏽
The romance took up minimal space in the book, and picked up where previous books left off. I didn't realize at first that this book was part off a series. So, I wasn't emotionally invested in the couple. Even by the end, I wasn't invested in them. But I wished them well at the end. 😂
This was a good book that I think many others would enjoy.
