Her toxic past. His dangerous future. A love worth dying for.
Claire
When I’m forced to move across the country, I use the unfortunate situation to distance myself from my abusive ex. I swear off sexy bad guys only to—quite literally—be knocked down by one the second I step into the courtyard of my new apartment complex.
He doesn’t even apologize—he just walks off!
Tired of being treated like I don't matter, I forget those emerald eyes and focus on securing a college scholarship. But fate throws us together when we enroll in the same English class, and I’m forced to tutor him. That's when I discover there’s good hidden beneath the surface.
But there are secrets too.
Johnny
Working for a criminal organization means no one around me is safe. I only took the job to protect the innocent, and now I’m just biding my time, hoping to get out alive.
When Claire walks into my life, it’s like a defibrillator to my heart.
I vow to stay away, to make her hate me, to keep her from harm. But it becomes impossible when we’re thrown together, both at the college we attend and the complex we live in.
And once I get a taste of how sweet she is, there’s no turning back. The desire to please and protect her is far too strong to resist.
But when secrets are exposed and our pasts come back to haunt us, we’re not just fighting for our hearts–but for our lives.
Broken Like You is a gritty, suspenseful standalone romance set in the Sinners and Angels Universe. Themes of narcissistic abuse (not from the hero), violence, and on the page love making. Dual POV. And a happily ever after. Meant for mature audiences.
AUTHOR NOTE: Previously individually titled Tortured Sinner and Fallen Angel, published by Tessa James.
This was a story for readers who may have the patience of a saint.
It was so slow paced, the characters’ and plot’s building were that much extended, it was taking very a long time to get the story moving. 🐌 🐌 I had to wait until chapter 14 for the hero to ask for the heroine’s name. This story was certainly not for me... Dnf @ 24%.
I would have given the first half 4 stars but the second half doesn’t deserve it. The ending felt unfinished which would be fine if the next book was still about them or a couple close to them but it’s not. In fact the book doesn’t even set you up to wanting to read the second book and if i could i would probably skip it. Some parts also didn’t make sense like how does one know someone’s address but doesn’t know where they live???
OH.MY.WOW! Lina Pierce has completely broken me and then slowly put the pieces of heart back together again. Johnny and Claire’s story was one intense ride. This story was full steam ahead with intense moments, love and lust galore, and a dedication and loyalty like no other.
Johnny and Claire’s story was heart-breaking, scary, tumultuous, but oh so beautiful and full of passion. Their love was soul reaching, completely and utterly consuming in the best way. The lengths they would go to to protect one another was astounding, even if at times I just wanted to shake them and say ‘just tell each other already’ even though they had the best of intentions.
There were so many twists and turns, total bombshells, I never saw coming. Luna Pierce created a wildly intense, completely romantic, and absolutely intoxicating story that I never wanted to end. With bittersweet moments and an HEA to challenge all other HEA’s, I fell madly in love with Johnny and Claire’s story.
Bravo on a fabulous story that will always be branded in my heart 🖤
I really couldn’t get into this book and At a disappointing 12% I submitted to the DNF.
The author needs to get out of the way and let the action drive the story. Too much “inner dialogue”, I like things to move quicker. Characters were lacking the “bad boy vibe” there was little tension or build up and no chemistry.
Other reviewers say it’s a great “love story” so if you’re prepared for the slow burn give it a go, just not for me.
I've been wanting to read Untamed Vixen for a while and was trying to find the reading order when I saw a video of the author explaining that readers should start with this one and then proceed to Untamed Vixen duet and I'm so glad I did!!! This book was a rollercoaster! I was on the edge of my seat most of the time!! There's so much happening all at once that it kept me glued to my Kindle! The plot twists made the whole book a page-turner for me, it was action-packed, fun, a little bit steamy, and so so good!!! I couldn't stop reading and I loved every character in it. Josey was also so fun! I'd love to see more of him and Rosie and I hope I get that in the duet. Great book!!!
A little bit about the story... Jhonny and Claire met when both of them were in the worst time of their lives. Claire had just moved across the country because her dad got a job overseas and she had to move in with her stranded mother, that abandoned her when she was little to live her own life. Claire was also trying to deal with her relationship that kept dragging every ounce of energy from her, and not in a good way. She was confused, frustrated, and just going through the motions at that point. Jhonny was also living his own nightmare, he was working for the worst kind of guy to help someone else get out of a terrible situation, and with time passing, he saw himself getting deeper and deeper into the worst situation he could've been in. These two meeting was the best thing that happened to either of them, even though they would have to go through serious hell in order to live in peace and happiness together. Their story is heartbreaking but together they could get through it all.
Johnny and Claire are one of my favorite couples. Bad boy and a good girl with bad circumstances. The thing I love is Claire is so observant and smart. Johnnys situation doesn’t get past her and instead of running, she stands by his side and becomes a serious bada… the only thing that maybe stood out as odd was the lack of parental interference. While I understand her mother is a flight attendant, the dad she lived with her whole life, was completely oblivious to her abusive relationship, and kind of fell off the radar when she moved in with her mom. Other than that, the plot, the twists, the steam, all of it was 5 stars. This is a different take on mafia romance. Definitely wouldn’t mind a follow up story with Joseph, Rosie, or Miller. A definite 5 star read for me.
This was just very mediocre. It kind of felt like After?? But less emotion and less toxicity. It was not suspenseful at all, and it was quite boring. I thought the hero was kind of weird, in a weird way, and the sex was very mediocre. Below mediocre even
This story was amazing and grabbed me from the beginning. Had me screaming, crying, laughing. Luna shattered my heart so many times. I can't wait to start the other books !
Cute quick read! Love the dialogue witty & enough steam in parts lol!! No grammatical errors which is always a plus! The story flowed nicely for most part! Did get repetitive at times, but kept me entertained! Do recommend this novel! If you love badass female characters who can hold their own & a bad boy with a heart of gold!!!! Definitely be reading more from this author!!!!
Forced myself to finish it as I try really hard not to be a quitter. It was like if Hallmark tried to make a spicy romance gangster made for tv movie. PG level spice, ridiculous premise, forced romance. Meh.
I did enjoy this book and at times I also felt it was slow, and I also thought he didn’t need to be as long. The first part of the book I enjoyed, the second half was alright but boy it dragged.
The relationship between Claire and Johnny was sweet, he’s not ya average unhinged, pitch black male character and I think it took abit of getting use to cause I’m normally use to male characters being top level psycho.
Is the book dark, to me no. It’s more of a slow burn, romantic suspense. Which is fine, but like I mentioned the book could have easily cut off 200 pages. I felt the ending was abit rushed, the whole main built up to the main plot, I thought some bits didn’t need to happen. Couple characters seem there way to hell which I’m glad, but one character I thought didn’t need to.
Claire, at times annoyed me, like there’s a part in the book and she got mad with Johnny for the same crap that she was pulling. Did I think there relationship was abit rushed (yes). Some of the side characters I enjoyed reading and o would like to see what happens with Claire’s best friend and a pal of Johnny’s.
I would recommend this book to those who’s never read a dark romance book and looking to dip their toes, but also the book is part of a series.
WHY did I wait so long to read this! I absolutely ATE this up, so freaking good! I love Claire and Johnny. They are soulmates. And the writing was just *chefs kiss* I don’t know what it is, but there’s something special about Johnny, I love him so much
Okay so I did enjoy this book. There’s just something keeping it from being 5 stars for me. It almost wasn’t dark enough for me. Like this book had all the potential to be dark and then like their relationship itself was so pure and sweet so I’m not sure if that’s what did it. But the plot was good. We are introduced to our FMC, Claire and our MMC, Johnny. Claire just has to uproot her life to move in with her mom who she’s never met because her dad just took a job across the world for photography. Johnny runs into her and keeps on going. She instantly thinks about how she can’t avoid assholes. When she left home, her bf, Griffin had grabbed her hard enough to leave bruises and she’s hoping the 2000 miles from him will be enough to get rid of him for good. She ends up finding a coffee shop called Brams that she instantly feels at home in. She ends up sitting beside the boy at college and discovers that his name is Johnny. She’s going home one night and finds him beat up badly in an alley. She takes him home and cares for him. She also grabs him food the next day. They discover that they have the same coffee shop order. Blueberry muffins and cinnamon in their coffee. He returns the favor when he finds her drunk at a bar and catches her off the pool table and takes her home. She thinks they hooked up but he tells her he’d never take advantage of her. Johnny tells her that they can’t be friends and tries to push her away. He is involved with the mob and can’t have her getting involved but he also can’t seem to stay away from her. And then their professor matches them as partners and assigns her to be his tutor. She tells him they’re going to get his life sorted out. And then she finds out why he got beat up. That he’s a runner and they did an inside job to beat him up and take the package and he has to get it back. They are starting to fall in love by now. They go to a party where some of Claire’s new friends are and they discover a room that has the shoes that Johnny remembers. One of the guys at the party had cornered her, Jared, but she managed to get away. When she knows the guys aren’t home, she goes back and finds the room with the shoes, Jared corners her again but she points a gun at him and gets the package. She gets the package to Johnny and his boss, Franklin, tells him to keep it. Turns out it was a ton of cash. He had confessed to Claire how he ended up working for franklin. Theres a young boy, Billy, in the building who ended up in the custody of his uncle who isn’t a good guy. His uncle got Billy in with Franklin to pay his debts. Johnny exchanged himself for the young boy to keep him safe. There’s another aunt who hopes to get custody of Billy and Johnny needs to be her personality reference. Griffin had shown up and was going to attempt to kill Claire. Johnny pushed him down the stairs and Claire told him to leave. In all her reports she said he was drunk and fell. She knew she couldn’t allow Johnny to get caught. Griffin wasn’t waking up from this coma. On Claire’s birthday. She goes and poisons griffin, with eye drops. That night. Johnny celebrates that Billy’s aunt got full custody of him. They went to brams to celebrate and heard gun shots. The 2 men who had jumped Johnny are now dead in the same alley they had jumped him in. Wait wait no that was a random night that happened. It was Claire’s birthday when Johnny gets shot and Claire thought he was dead. And then when he wakes up they scheme to make him seem dead. When I tell you I was crying like Claire and Johnny are completely in love by now and you killed him, wtf. So instead we find out that they staged the funeral and everything and Claire uses her scholarship to go back home. Johnny has money set back they use for a different car and places to stay and necessities while she’s waiting on her scholarship to clear. They have been hiding for months because Johnny is scared Franklin will find out where he is. He gets a note in the mail that he’s been found. And then Josey, who is one of Franklin’s men that he’s always liked. Is in town and warns him to. They use a coffee shops called Banes as the meet up. Claire had done an ancestry test on Johnny and discovered his father is the owner of banes. She kept going there, trying to judge his character before she’d tell Johnny. But the owner Luciano, discovers her and she tells him the truth. When she’s leaving the coffee shop and going to tell Johnny. She is stolen by a couple of franklins men. They planned to kill get. But Johnny gets to Luciano and they figure out she had been taken, Luciano takes him to where she is, Johnny takes his gun and shoots the men. They had put a good hurt on her tho. Luciano cleans it up. Claire decides to tell him everything but then Luciano shows up. And she admits he is Johnnys dad. Luciano wants to help kill Franklin so that they can be safe. Johnny thought he had an inside on where Franklin was landing but turns out it was fake. And then Franklin calls and he has Claire’s best friend rosey and he says if they come alone, he’ll give her up for Johnny. They tell Luciano how Johnny got caught up in this and he’s determined to help. So they go to the warehouse and pretend to be alone and realize Franklin plans to kill them all. So a full blown war starts, Luciano made it there. Josey takes Rosey to their hospital. Franklin shoots Luciano and Claire kills Franklin. Rosey is ok but Luciano died in surgery. Johnny is slightly heartbroken from the loss of his father he never got to have. Luciano left basically everything to Johnny. Johnny and Claire are co owners of the coffee shop. He had a 21 year old, miller, who had been helping him who gets some. And Josey got some too. So they all work together to pick up where Luciano died and keep things carrying. In the epilogue they go back and get to see Bram. And then Johnny proposes in the courtyard of the apartments they lived in. Where it all started. And we are hinted that the next book is Junes book. June was one of the friends that Claire had made so I feel strongly that I did read these in the correct order. That was one of my flaws. That the reading order isn’t defined on this series but I feel like it’s important. If I would have known Junes secrets in this book I don’t think it would make sense. I’ll let you know once I read her book tho. Broken like you is a good title because Johnny and Claire were both convinced they were broken but they bathed in each others brokenness and it brought them to the light. They never judged nor quit loving each other due to the broken ness of each other.

When Claire moves across the country to live with her mom and attend college, the first person she runs into, literally, is Johnny. Johnny instantly is taken by her, but he has secrets, bad ones. Ones that force him to keep everyone at a distance and he doesn’t let anyone in. And Claire is dealing with an abusive and cheating ex-boyfriend back home that just won’t let her alone. But the pull between them is undeniable. When Claire finds him beaten severely she’s right there to help him and care for him, and when Claire gets drunk and needs to be rescued Johnny is there. Unfortunately Johnny knows that letting her into his life is dangerous for her and tells her they aren’t friends. So when they’re assigned for a class project and also when Claire is assigned to tutor Johnny, it’s the last thing either want. Claire is quickly pulled into Johnny’s world and vows to do anything to help him. This book has everything, action, twists and turns, suspense, secrets, heartache, and lots of love between the couple! Johnny loves Claire so much and would do absolutely anything for her. His love for her is so strong and the connection between them is beautiful. They are absolutely perfect and amazing. They’re the perfect team, it’s like they’ve known each other their whole lives, soulmates. This book was absolutely amazing and I definitely recommend it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Soooo boring I skipped a bulk of chapters in part 2 and missed nothing.
The next book has been pushed to the bottom of my TBR.
**** SPOILERS ****
JJ's little bitch ass was always angry but scared to act. How is your barely legal girlfriend going to nurse you to health, get you to pass college, and kill your enemies but you f*** her like a school teacher. "Let go"
Everything that occurred was so set in happenstance and got wilder every page. You know who took the package because they wore old school Adidas, Billy gets to go home same day you get shot but live, fake your death but go to the east coast where the mob boss there is your dad? Everyone from part 1 lives but the new dad dies and gives everything to his unknown son he's known for 2 weeks? The guy trying to kill you is your uncle. It's too much coincidence almost a fever dream.
Not to mention the weird ass rap sheet mentioned about Griffin but he's 18 and has been dating Claire for some time. When would any of that have happened. Her caring father didn't realize was total BS. The weird angle with the estranged mom to only have 3 lines and be involved less than an hour was a weird push to rationalize an 18 year old living alone across country.
I find it hilarious that I decided to skip forward when Claire was swabbing JJ only to turn to a point in the story where she's telling him it was actually a DNA test. I skipped 10 chapters!

DNF’d at 70% and I try to make a point in finishing a book, regardless if it’s not my cup of tea. With that said, I can’t and won’t spend the last day of 2022 reading something I can’t get into.
My issues: 1. REALLY slow paced and boring. It’s a lot of back and forth with nothing actually happening. 2. Johnny is classified as a bad boy…. Are we reading the same book because I’m pretty sure the amount of times his ass was kicked would result in a different title. Claire is a bigger badass then Johnny and that’s saying something. 3. This was listed as a dark mafia romance. Maybe to first timers it could be seen that way, and that’s totally okay! To me tho, it’s like a baby’s first step - Uncertain, unsteady, and wobbling until they fall. I didn’t see a mafia aspect really but that could be because I DNF’d. Maybe the DNA results will lead to more of a mafia…. But that doesn’t happen until 69% in.
I can’t go into any more issues without doing spoilers so I’ll just leave it with - I’m really happy to see so many other people enjoy this book and give it 5 stars as all authors put their blood, sweat, and tears into these. It won’t be everyone’s jam and in this case it wasn’t mine.
DNF at 32%. This one just wasn't working for me at all. I'm sure (Like always) this is a case of its me, not you. I tried picking this up a few times but it wasn't grabbing me at all. I didn't particularly like Claire either which didn't help me. I won't be rating this one as it's a DNF. Please look at other reviews before judging the book on mine. This was a kindle unlimited read, so free if you subscribe to the service.
Was 4 stars for all of part 1 I loved it. The stress, the pull, the attraction, the characters. But then with part 2 I felt like it should have been it's own book so by then I was done. Felt too elongated. Should have been condensed or made into 2 books. But still really good overall. The change of pace just caused me to lose interest.
Yhis was so slow i almosg dropped it but i pulled thru and it wasnt even that worth it 😭 also why do these characters keep talking to themselves like ghey think to us mkre than talk to the ppl in their life its kinda weird? And i skipped all the smut it was like boring and didnt fit the circumstances
Honestly was really good. The love Johhny and Claire share is just perfect. Breaks my heart at the end at the loss of Luciano but Johnny's proposal at the end. There are no words. Absolutely none.
Not as good as I anticipated. The slow burn 🔥 was waaaay too slow. I actually had a hard time paying attention to the story. I feel like the mmc could have definitely been a little more rougher with the fmc. He was giving "golden retriever" vibes when I wanted him more brutal.
Claire had a clear image of her college years, everything thought out perfectly, up until her father throws a big wrench in her plans. Forced to start college far away from everyone she knows, she's certain she'll want to leave as soon as possible. But sometimes what you think is the worst possible news, turns out to be the best thing that could ever happen to you...
"Broken like you" is one of those stories where character development slowly reveals each layer of the main characters, making you truly feel their personalities and what lies deep in their souls. Looks can be deceiving, and it's always worth to look at what lays behind the first impression. The storyline knows a slower development, but it still kept me captivated and with an intense desire to get to know these characters even better. I loved Claire and Johnny, and their soulmate connection. It's a love written in the stars, and I enjoyed reading about their path to finding each other. This book was action filled, but also highly emotional and a real joy to read.
I read this book after a Untamed Vixen and Vilnian Era and I regret nothing! Although this story is not a why choose it takes place right before Untamed Vixen.
Claire's world is turned upside down when she moves across the country to sunny California for college. School is her number one focus and the only thing she needs to get back to her east coast home is a scholarship her professor is willing to help her get. Just one year and she will be back to everything she loves. The only good thing about being so far away is getting away from someone in her past trying to overtake her future.
Johnny is the mysterious neighbor who seems to not have a care in the world. He definitely doesn't care for Claire and seems to be determined to ruin her day. An unexpected partnership will change it all for both of them.
I love Johnny and Claire's story. This has to be one of my favorite books of 2023.
Broken Like You was an incredible book! This was an amazing story with many twists and turns and a few jaw dropping moments that had me shouting noooooo! I loved Claire and Johnny’s story and their enemies to lovers romance. The whole storyline was intriguing and held my attention to the very end. And I was happy to see that there was finally a HEA for Johnny and Claire because they definitely deserved it! Amazing book and I would recommend it to anyone!

I cannot wait to read more from her!! Man oh man! This book is killer! The first one was great but this one blew it out of the water!!!
