About the author

Jack Sheffield (born Jack Linley, 1945) is a British author who wrote a series of books of fiction about the headmaster of a village school in a fictional Yorkshire village. The stories are set from the late 1970s to the early 1980s and attempt to portray life in Yorkshire as it was at that time.

He was trained as a teacher at St John's College, York and later became head teacher of two schools in North Yorkshire and then senior lecturer in primary education at Bretton Hall.

He took up writing after retirement, and his first novel "Teacher, Teacher!" sold 100,000 copies

Another lovely Jack Sheffield story and sadly his last in the Teacher series. It felt like revisiting old friends from the village, these stories are so laid back and gentle and I always feel happy when I read them. A bit sad now that I've finished but hopefully Jack will continue to write more books in the future.

Although I am sad to “say goodbye” to all the familiar characters from this lovely heartwarming series, this book neatly tied up a lot of the characters’ plot lines, and then left the feeling of a fresh start for the school under a new headteacher and school secretary. New starts beckon too for Jack, Joseph and Vera. I have loved this whole series of books which have been an annual treat to look forward to and which have provided a delightful escape sometimes from harder times in my life. I look forward next year to the beginning of a new series with new characters to get to know, no doubt written with the author’s usual warmth and attention to detail.

Last of the Teacher Series felt quite sad after having read them over almost a decade. Will miss the tales from the alternative log book and checking in with characters who feel like old friends. Loved the humour but also to learn about social history and life in the 80s

Wonderful story as usual

I have read every single book in this series, reading about the staff and children of Ragley on the Forest school, I started with Teacher Teacher and I enjoyed that book so much I knew I was hooked. I was really sad reading the last chapter of Last Day of School, as I know there will not be anymore. The stories are not only about the school but about the villagers, their funny, memorable, hilarious, bad and sad events in their everyday lives. Thank you Jack Sheffield xx

Another enjoyable read from Jack Sheffield. Funny, sad and at times poignant knowing this is the last of his tales as a headmaster at Ragley school.

I have read all of the series.
I feel that even though it is fictional, the characters and places are so real that they soon become embedded in our lives.
Apart from catching up with the characters. I loved the fact that each book was set in a particular year and the music/fashion/ toys etc.. of that year was nostalgically remembered.
Even though this is the last in the series, we all know a "Ruby" or "vera" (Especially if you work in a school!) So goodbye Ragley Village and Thank you for the memories.

Another fun read, just like all of Jacks in this series, I’m just sad it’s the last one as I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them all, relating to many of the children’s antics having taught preschoolers for over 35 years.
