Detective Kay Sharp #4

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge

Rate this book
Her face, beautiful even in death, gazed open-eyed at the azure sky. Her brown, silky hair fanned around her head, bringing out the pallor of her skin. Her lips were slightly parted as if she was still breathing, as if she was whispering her goodbyes.

On a hot summer’s day, the sleepy town of Mount Chester is thrown into turmoil when seventeen-year-old local girl Jenna goes missing. Within hours, the case takes an agonizing turn when her body is discovered in the isolated mountains.

Detective Kay Sharp rushes to the scene, hiking for miles to the base of Wildfire Ridge. From the markings on Jenna’s body, it’s clear that she was brutally murdered. Near the victim, Kay finds a butterfly-shaped hair clip with a set of fingerprints that could be a vital clue.

In the hunt for the truth, Kay turns the small town upside down. She learns that Jenna changed dramatically over the past months, no longer the popular girl who always wore a smile on her face. Kay is certain whatever happened to Jenna recently must be the key to her death.

When forensics from the butterfly hair clip comes back, the fingerprints don’t match Jenna’s. Then Kay makes a breakthrough that turns her blood to ice. Jenna was in contact with someone linked to Kay’s own past—and the secret she has spent the last sixteen years burying. If the truth comes out, it could destroy her.

With the clock ticking, and every minute critical, Kay is up against the toughest case of her career. Can she risk everything to confront the past she has been running from, and save another innocent girl before it’s too late?

Thrillers don’t get more addictive than this! You’ll race through this gripping page-turner, your heart pounding, as you’re hit with twist after twist. Perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Karin Slaughter and Rachel Kaine.

This was a pretty good mystery/thriller that also touched on issues of bullying, sl_t shaming, toxic masculinity and the entitlement of the wealthy.

The body of 17 year old Jenna Jerrett is found at the bottom of wildfire ridge. It is not clear if she jumped, was pushed or fell accidentally, but it is clear that before the fall she had been brutally r@ped. Naturally, being teenagers, her friends were not very forthcoming. She had apparently withdrawn into herself in the last few months but no one was telling the detectives why. A couple of days later another teenager from the same school is reported missing. Detective Kay Sharp thinks the cases might be related and she and her partner, Detective Elliott Young go all out to find her before she, too, is killed. But nothing is ever simple.

Evidence from the scene of Jenna’s assault shows two sets of male shoe prints and two sets of female shoe prints. A butterfly hair clip has fingerprints that don’t match anyone. As they zero in on Jenna’s online activity they find she has been chatting with an older man. When he is identified Kay’s world is rocked. It is a name she knows very well. But it cannot be because that person is long dead. Now she has to navigate the case while protecting her own very dangerous secret. The pace was crisp throughout and the suspense of wondering whether Kendra would be found alive was, well, very tense!

Eventually, as always happens some suspects are identified but that is not the whole story, there is a jaw dropping twist yet to come. There is a hint of a developing romance between Kay and Elliott which I didn’t think was necessary but, hey ho, many authors must feel obliged to stick some romance into their books. The most interesting aspect of that, for me at least, is whether Kay will ever feel able to trust Elliott with her dark secret. It was an entertaining story with yet another lesson for young people to be wary of what they post online. Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the much appreciated arc which I reviewed voluntarily and honestly.

Many thanks to Bookouture, as well to NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of The Girl on Wildfire Ridge.

Former FBI Agent, Kay Sharp, has returned to her hometown and is now working as a detective. When a local seventeen-year-old girl goes missing the case takes an agonizing turn when her body is discovered in the isolated mountains, raped, and brutalized. The investigation takes an additional dark turn when Jenna is shown to have been crushingly bullied for months prior to her murder. It was heartrending and disturbing reading about both of those sensitive subjects.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is the first book I've read in the Detective Kay Sharp series and for me, it almost felt like dark adult subjects combined with younger, Harlequin romance vibes.  When I reached the first 10% of the book, I read that Kay's detective partner, Elliott, was "resisting the urge to pull over on the side of the road to sweep her in his arms and seal those lips under a fiery kiss", and I was pretty sure this wasn't going to be the book for me. Honestly, there is not a thing wrong with enjoying that type of writing!! I'm just not one of those readers.

There was more than one twist and turn, the pace was fairly quick, and I found the characters to be interesting!

Chocante!

4.5✨

Gostei imenso deste livro!

Detective Kay Sharp has acclimated to her career as a detective back in her home town. She was an FBI agent, profiler and is a psychologist. She returned home previously when her brother Jacob was in trouble, and she ended up staying and joined the local police force.

Her newest case really has her on edge. In fact, Kay and Jacob are hiding a secret that could totally destroy their lives, and her newest case brings her past front and center. Can she solve the case of who killed a young girl named Jenna, all while closely guarding her secret?

While Kay is looking for answers, so is her partner Elliot Young. In fact, he just might be looking for more. His feelings towards Kay are strong, but he has very good reasons for not letting her know how he feels. The fact that they are working together so closely on this current case only works to exacerbate his growing feelings even more.

In this book one thing is made very clear. There is no such thing as a coincidence, and this proves to be an undeniable fact for Kay and for Elliot. It was quite interesting to watch Kay navigate what was going on now, all while feelings of sadness and regret threatened to consume her.

While this thrilling book could be read as a standalone, understanding Kay and her motivations is made much clearer by reading this compelling series in order. For an excellent read, one that not only deals with a serious crime towards a teenager but goes back to the tragedy that Kay and her brother Jacob experienced, then look no further than this book, The Girl on Wildfire Ridge. You will be glad you picked this one up. I love this engaging series and cannot wait to see where things go with book five.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

This was my second read of the Detective Kay Sharp series. Last year I’ve read the first book in the series and enjoyed it so I knew what I’m going to get with this story.

Detective Kay is surely making a new life in the town. She came back to help her brother. After leaving her job as an FBI agent, she joined the police department and helps with any murder or crime case that arises.

This time, we get into a darker story. Because at stake is not only the solving of a murder but her own life. And her brother’s, I might add. They both hold a secret that comes crushing dangerously close to all the clues in this investigation.

I enjoyed the writing and story overall. It is intriguing to see how the characters act in certain moments and what drives them to do what they do.

The suspense is high and the ending. That left room for more and while things are settled now, I’m really curious where the author will take us on this journey.

There are a few things that I had to skip, but that’s only my choice.

If you are a fan of interesting police procedural stories with lots of psychological moments, this is definitely a series for you.

Kay and her work partner Elliot work hard to solve the case of Jenna, who ends up dead at the bottom of a mountain. How did she get here, what happened to her beforehand? Who was involved, and why?

This book was very well crafted. There were some quite triggering themes here: rape, sl*t shaming, toxic masculinity and abuse. Some interesting twists, and a cautionary tale about social media and how it can all too easily lead to the ruin of someone's life. Kay and her brother Jacob also have to deal with a spectre of their past and since their past was very traumatic, this is a bit of a shock too.

I really liked this book. There is a little bit of a "will they, won't they" attraction between Kay and Elliot, which is quite cute, and it is needed as this novel deals with some very heavy topics.

4.5 stars from me.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

A Very Exciting Story!

So I really loved this one! In many ways its a school setting with bullying and popular kids and twisted things going on behind closed doors. And there are definitely some narcissistic people in here too. Those things made it easy for me to guess who the killer was. And yes I did indeed correctly guess all the criminals in this one (after striking out on the books before this one so it was good to get a correct guess again).

And another thing I REALLY loved in here was Miranda! Even though there is just that tiny scene with her and she doesn't really do much but wow! And it was funny how Kay was caught off guard. She had totally the wrong idea! I guess Elliott really is a cowboy.. I know from previous books he is always wearing that cowboy hat but I never knew he had the proper mount to go with it! What a wonderful surprise!

But the story... We are not here to gush about a quarter horse (or are we?)

Anyway this story was very exciting. A race against the clock to save a girl and to find the proper murderer... It's not easy. There are many legal obstacles standing in Kay's way and she just wants to go galloping forward at breakneck speed but she doesn't have a horse and so she has to wait. Which of course annoys her... Its a fun story with the usual death scene, collecting evidence, waiting on results, doing interviews and knowing who is lying..

Its something how some people can have everything and yet somehow ruin their life. That is basically what it is about... And sometimes a thing can be right in front of your face and you don't see it at all...

I found the villains in here easier to understand. And I stayed up super late last night reading this as I was truly hooked!! I Really didn't want to put it down but gave up at 1:30 AM. Yes these stories are so much fun and very addictive!

I will have to tell my horsey friends about Miranda!! That is SO funny!!! 🐎🐎🐎🐎

And I love that Elliott has a horse!

“Wildfire Ridge, the last hues of orange, crimson, and red that had earned the peak its name fading quickly with the setting sun. The deep, menacing red vanished last, a blood-smeared reminder of the day that had ended, an unspoken threat of the day to come.” This is a prime example of why I love this series. Even a sunset appears menacing in Leslie’s accomplished hands.

This is book four in the Kay Sharp series although it can be read as a standalone I would recommend reading them all to get the full and bigger picture. Especially as this one does focus a lot on Kay’s past, who her father was and the secret she and her brother have been keeping.

When the body of a missing girl is found and it seems she had been bullied online and groomed by an older man, Kay is yet again having a battle with both personal and work crises. Then another girl vanishes and the hunt is on.

I love the relationships between Kay and her brother Jacob and her partner Elliot. This one had so much more depth as I felt I knew them better whereas previously they were holding things back. The kitchen repair scene was heartbreaking.

The storyline was current, gripping and well paced. It was also quite difficult to read as a mother of a young girl roughly the same age, the shaming was horrendous. Linking the crime to Kay’s own past tied the two stories together beautifully and gave me quite a surprise at the end.

Another gripping crime thriller from Leslie Wolfe.
Detective Kay Sharp and her partner Elliot are investigating the death of a seventeen year old girl at Wildfire Ridge.
They find out that she’s been sexually assaulted and looks like she was pushed to her death.
On investigating her life leading up to her death it seems she was the target of cyber bullies who had made her life a misery.
Soon another teenager goes missing and Kay and Elliot know they have a limited amount of time before she’s killed as well.
There’s lots of characters in this book who you suspect but I didn’t see the ending coming. It was a great twist that took me completely by surprise.
A great crime thriller.

Fast paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat and reading through the night!
Another great book in the Detective Kay Sharp series. I do recommend reading the complete series to know the backstory of Detective Kay Sharp but you can certainly read this as a stand alone.
A solid mystery with cyber and teenager bullying playing a big role.
Highly recommended series to any mystery/thriller lover!

A teenage girl goes missing; later, her body is discovered in the isolated mountains, on Wildfire Ridge. Detective Kay Sharp hikes miles to get to the scene and finds the girl was brutally murdered. In the course of the investigation, Kay finds the dead girl had a connection to someone in Kay’s own distant past. Then she’s forced to navigate an investigation which could cause her own life to crumble when the truth comes out.
Quibbles: This story straddled the line of being romance dressed up as mystery/thriller and that irritated me sometimes. And there were some odd word choices (“ostensive breath” and “The livid kid … “) that drew me out of the story.

But, overall, the writing, character building, plot, and pacing kept me coming back for more. “Silent tears, of humiliation and defeat, of unspeakable shame. In the distance, the waning bouts of laughter felt like slaps across her sear-stained face. She was alone. No one had heard her screams. No one could help her.” I could feel the young girl’s desperation as she breathed her last breaths. “Scars memorialized in weathered drywall; a testimony of the years Kay desperately wanted to forget.” I grew up in a not-so-happy home, and while no structures were damaged in the ruining of the marriage, I could feel and identify with Kay’s sense of shame and sadness and desire to fix things.

I enjoyed how the author wrapped the past and the present together. I liked how Kay can hold her own with her boss the sheriff, and I like the relationship between Kay and her partner. Kay is also building a relationship with her equally traumatized brother, and the way they support each other is heartening. The plot held my interest all the way through, and the ending had an interesting surprise twist.

These can be read out of order. I went from book 1, I think to book 4, and I was still able to keep up. The author does a good job of salting in enough details so you can follow and not feel lost. I think they’re probably better in order, but I also think going back and reading the ones I’ve missed would be like catching up with someone I want to be friends with.

I will read more in this series.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is book four of the Detective Kay Sharpe series. Detective Kay Sharp has for the most part gotten used being a detective back in her home town. She returned home previously when her brother Jacob was in trouble, she ended up staying and joined the local police force. Now she and her brother are refurbishing the old family home. Unfortunately, Kay and Jacob did not have a happy childhood and the house holds too many bad memories including a big secret. Kay gets a call that a teenage girl is missing, so off she goes to investigate. While chatting with the mom, they get a call that the body of a young girl has been found.

Shortly after finding Jenna's body, another girl has gone missing. The clues will bring up the past where her father's name becomes a suspect. Kay knows this can't be because he is in fact dead, but the world believes he is considered missing. Kate becomes secretive and Elliot confronts her about what she is hiding. After disclosing her father's name has come up they work together to solve mysteries of the death of Jenna and still missing girl.

There are many twists and turns as you may well expect, but it is a wonderful storyline to include Kay's history and traumas she is dealing with. Leslie Wolfe is one of my favorite authors. Her writing style is easy to read and leads us all on an adventure to find the truth. This story starts off with a huge mystery that is the main focus until the very end.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

The Girl on Wildfire Ridge is a cracking story. That had me gripped from the moment I picked it up.

As former FBI profiler now detective Kay Sharp and her partner Elliott Young hunt for a missing seventeen-year-old girl.

But within hours of learning of Jenna's disappearance her body is found and it soon becomes clear she suffered not just on the night she died but in the months leading up to her death.

And as Kay and Elliott uncover a campaign of hate, cyberbullying, teenage jealousy and online grooming a breakthrough is made. But it's one that sends Kay reeling and has the potential to upend her and her brothers lives forever.

But why is the evidence so conflicting if this person really is responsible for Jenna's death?

And when a second teenager disappears, Kay realises they've been looking at this case all wrong, and a race against time ensues to find answers, save a girl and catch a killer.

And with fantastic pacing, twists galore and a killer I did not see coming. This was a fantastic read. That I'd definitely recommend to others and it's made me more determined than ever to read the two books I've missed out on.

Right from the start this crime thriller had me
Enthralled, intrigued, turning pages, you'll see.
I didn't want anything to interrupt or make me put it down
Any queries and calls were definitely met with a frown!

In Mount Chester a seventeen year old girl disappears
Her parents are dreading news, the worst of their fears.
When her body is found, from a cliff she fell
Did she jump, was she pushed, who can tell?

Detective Kay Sharp is there at the scene
Its clear she was murdered, what could the clues mean?
Get ready for shocking revelations and discoveries, too,
Making you worried about more victims and guessing just who.

It is such a dramatic story with great characters, too,
With threads from Kay's past also coming through.
Along with cyberbullying, parents, secrets and more
As the detectives decipher the clues with twists to explore.

It truly is a very gripping crime thriller read
If you enjoy this genre, this is one book you'll need.
For my complementary copy, I say thank you,
As I share with you this, my honest review.

My favourite book in the series! We learn about Kay's past, what happened to her father, and who he really was. It felt really personal, and I especially enjoyed this part of the story. The main storyline is about a teenage girl who is murdered. Her whole personality changed in a blink of an eye. She stayed at home in her room, and had nothing to do with her friends. The police needs to figure out what happened, but no one wants to tell them.

An enjoyable read that I could not put down. The story hooked me from the beginning, and it had a good flow. Highly recommended!

Book 4 in the Kay Sharp series. I loved the previous 3 but this didn't grab me as much.

My heart was breaking for Jenna and I carried on reading as I wanted to find out what had happened to her.

My main problem was all the characters were just so unlikeable.

The plot had some good twists with one leaving Kay reeling.
