Derrick Dreadlow: The Honey Pot

Rate this book
Lieutenant Derrick Dreadlow came to Hawaii on a forced vacation from the NYPD.

Though he couldn't entirely escape the memories and reminders of his deceased wife, Lynn, he gave it his best shot. If he pursued his search for the truth, he would be dismissed from the NYPD on his return to New York.
As he spent time in paradise, he realized he didn't know his wife as well as he thought he did. He decided it was time to let go and move on with his life.

As he settled in and found new friends and love, he discovered a new life and reasons to keep pushing forward.
However, from time to time, something would pull him back. A nagging reminder that there was a part of her life she kept secret from him, a part he couldn't escape.
As the anniversary of Lynn's murder approaches, her past casts a darkening chill across paradise and beyond.

But is he now a Lieutenant in the Honolulu Police Department. As Derrick and his partner, Detective Pele Kobayashi, deal with the twisting case of a missing woman, little did he expect that Lynn's shadowed past would come roaring back to life.
Once again, Derrick finds himself called upon to clean up a mess that others created. But this time, he isn't on a mission alone.

However, as he tries to wrap his head around Lynn's secret past, Pele slips deeper and deeper into a changing world she doesn't want to face. Pele tries to find ways of coping as her perception of reality becomes more and more blurred. She buys new cars and a big house. She learns how to fly a plane. She also hones another skill.

Together, Derrick, Pele, and their friends push forward in fighting crime and uncovering the truth.

Julien studied ancient history and anthropology in college with the goal of writing and teaching why we are the way we are and do the things we do. However, his path was not to be so direct. He ended up spending a long and varied career at a top Fortune 500 technology company.

This came about as the result of a bet with friends that anyone could do whatever they wanted, if they put their mind to it. His friends bet him that he couldn’t pass a test and get hired by the company they worked for. He took the bet. His prize for winning was a job offer. Plus, a transfer to Colorado. (Ski country!) On the surface, that altered his education from history to business. However, the passion for understanding the mystery of bigger, more fundamental questions lingered on. Alas, for now, it was relegated to a back seat.

During that time, he wore many hats ranging from manufacturing to programming to technical writing, video production and systems integration. He also had the opportunity to travel all across the US and other countries as well as work with people from around the world. And, many vacations to the jewel of the Pacific… Hawaii.

The key to all this… While people in other parts of the world may appear mysterious, and different, in many ways we are the same. The mysterious, the unknown… are merely things we don’t understand yet.

Eventually, the time approached to shift gears. Corporate life hadn’t been appealing in the last few years. It was time to get back on the course he originally set out on. That meant retiring from one path and embarking on another.

However, in a way, he came full circle. Turning a thirty plus year career in the corporate world, into an education in itself. Interacting with people from all around the world, and experiencing opportunities that would have never occurred on his original path. It turned out to be an education better than any classroom could have provided.

Life is filled with opportunities. The question is… what can we make of them?

Ok read

Liked parts of this book but got lost in the storyline and skimmed parts of it. I will probably continue on with the series.

The Honey Pot focuses on three puzzling murder mysteries, some with far-reaching, menacing threads. Within this swirling mix are clues illuminating the mysterious life and death of Derrick’s former wife, a DEA operative.

Adding to the murkiness, is Derrick’s HPD partner, Pele, whose actions and apathy are cause for concern.

Secondary stories, fitting easily within the backdrop of Hawaii, include the impact of climate change on the islands and the on-going quest for clean energy.

As much as I enjoyed this book, I felt it needed the polish of a good beta reader. Still, at 14 books into the series, I remain a Derrick Dreadlow fan. The characters continue to grow and surprise us. The mysteries are solid, the adventure is fun, and the undercurrent is love and respect. No cliffhangers, but intriguing threads are intentionally left dangling to spur more tales.
