Nautica was raised by the streets and forced to grow up fast. The allure of the fast like pulled her into a world of scandal, schemes, and hustling. After Nautica comes up on a big scam and her biggest payday ever, she decided to move to the East Coast in search of a new beginning. What she thinks will be a new start turns out to be a nightmare. She meets Manny, a well known millionaire druglord who is planning his exit from the streets. Manny is ready to settle down and marry the woman of his dreams. He sweeps Nautica off her feet and introduces her to the good life, promoting her from an ex-hood chick to the queen of the streets. But when the past comes back to surface, it causes their whole world to fall to pieces. Nautica and Manny have skeletons in their closest that intertwine and cause a dilemma that turns them against each other. This story takes you through the life of a dopeman's wife and her fall from grace. Look through her eyes and prepare for a sexy, page turning classic that has an ending so unpredictable, not even Nautica can see it coming.
JaQuavis Coleman also writes (with Ashley Antoinette) as "Ashley & JaQuavis".
JaQUAVIS COLEMAN, the New York Times best-selling author of Dopeman’s Trilogy, first burst onto the scene at the age of eighteen and quickly became a nationwide literary phenomenon. He and his wife Ashley Antoinette have coauthored numerous “street fiction” classics. With the birth of the Cartel series, the “Ashley and JaQuavis” brand took off. In 2013, twenty-seven-year-old Coleman was honored by Ebony magazine as being one of the Top 100 most influential African Americans in the country.
This book was ridiculous. It started off really good but, the last six chapters just ruined the entire book. Most of the mistakes Nautica made were just stupid. Someone as hood and street as she was would NEVER bring a stranger back to her hotel room and leave a bag full of money alone with said stranger. Hood folks don’t make those kind of amateur mistakes. When Decal finally saw the tape, he said Nautica shot Zion. Ummmmm, Kia shot Zion. So, the author can’t remember what he wrote?!!! When Loon started blackmailing Nautica, she should’ve started scheming on how to get rid of his azz. Again, that’s how real folks from the street operate. If the other two books in the series are as corny as this one, I’ll pass thank you very much.
All I can do is shake my head at Tical stupidity, I always said females always have the upper hand when it comes to men because we can do a lot of things that have them blinded, and men got the nerve to say females are stupid "I think not" smh. I was so glad that Loon and Nautica or whatever how you spell their names got killed and died. I was waiting patiently for it to happen while listening to this book on audible I was begging for it to happen well Antarctica (yes I said Antarctica) lmao. like I said, I was waiting for her to die more. Plus I sort of knew that Millie didn't die I'm glad she didn't plus I can't wait to read part 2, I don't know when or how I'm a get part 2 :{
I don't get the title but the book was awesome! Sex, stripping, pregnancy, anger, love, plotting, lying, stealing, drugs, liquor, jealousy, rape, abuse, murder, and backstabbing. With all that I couldn't put this book down. I was actually mad that I had to go to work because I didn't want to stop reading! My only wish is that this book was longer. . . and maybe that it had a happy ending.
I noticed a few inconsistencies. One in the beginning when Khia and her man where having sex and it said he grabbed her HUGE @$$ and then a few pages later the author wrote about how small her butt was. Then when Nautica was driving in her Benz in the beginning of the chapter it read that she glanced at her bag full of money but then at the end of the paragraph it said she got out and opened her trunk to grab her bag full of money. Plus there were a few typos but no biggie, I just happened to notice.
My review about to have so spoiler's like man I'm glad Nautica or whatever how you spell her name.IDC but I'm was wishing for her to die lmao. But it's crazy how much I wanted Tical to live but in the end, he got killed! Smh, I liked that dude. Good book, though.
I agree with some of the other reviewers. The title isn't even accurate, because Nautica wasn't even married to Tical (who I believe I've been pronouncing wrong -_- lol). Overall I thought the story was okay, another story about females trying to come up and falling in love with another drug dealer and she "changes" but the past comes back to haunt them w/e etc.. However I did like the little twist with Loon And Millie, made it a little more interesting. I'm curious to see where the story is going to lead to because it feels like all the key players are "gone". The ending def made me mad too because Nautica could have just been real with Tical especially since she was annoying me with the back and forth about about she loveeee him and don't want to lie to him no mo'. -_- Lastly, THERE WAS SOOO MANY GRAMMATICAL ERRORS that a few times I just put the book down because I was spending more time trying to figuring out what the sentencing was trying to say and who said what. Sheesh. Anyways 4 stars because 3 would be a little harsh, because I still enjoyed it.
Just finished the The Dopeman's Wife it was really good book the first Ive read with JaQuavis work by himself. I was with Nautica for a minute there at the beginning but instead of her being a woman and being up front with her man she got everybody killed... Other than that the book was the bomb!!!
It's settled for me. Ashley Antoinette was most definitely riding the coattails of JaQuavis Coleman. If Coleman's debut The Dopeman's Wife and Antoinette's debut The Prada Plan show anything- it's that. While I struggled to get through TPP because of how amatuer the entire thing was, this was entirely the opposite. This is actually more like two books in one in my opinion and after reading the "first" story I was scared that he'd ended it far too quickly and what else would he do with the rest of the book? I had no reason to worry- he kept it going and turned it into something totally different. The main character is Nautica, who I loved, for all her faults she felt just like someone we all know. She was very relatable and I loved reading about her. There are more than a few supporting characters so I won't get into all that- I don't want to give anything away anyway. The ending was awesome and this is one of the very few books that I can't wait to read the sequel for. I'm extremely interested in what the hell Coleman will do next with Nautica. The only complaints I have are the typos- there is really no need for that. Get a better publishing company or something. I would do it myself before I let a product with my name on it be on the market with mistakes. The second complaint I have is a small one but a pet peeve of mine. Using song lyrics. There is a time and place for everything and Lil Wayne lyrics belong in songs. Not books. Hearing that someone body is "marked up like the subway in Harlem" only makes me want to put the book down and go pop in a Lil Wayne CD. Leave that alone and you'll be fine JaQuavis.
Once again we have a fucking Greek tragedy! I don't know why the fuck I continuously continue to put myself through this bullshit with the Coleman's. (Because they write great stories Jordan...that's why.)
I don't even really have too much to say. I knew Milly wasn't dead. I knew Nautica ended up killing Murdock. But he definitely shot her ass too and left her for dead. But I fucking forgot that Church's father was out for blood for Manny killing his son. Even though that grimy nigga was involved in the set up to try to kill him. Black Pete knows the game. It's fucked up that he would feel like his son deserved to be avenged knowing what he did.
I really wish Nautica would have told Manny everything sooner instead of letting that crazy nigga have her pussy...Manny's pussy. She was so worried about maintaining her good green girl image and was afraid to lose him. But it wouldn't have mattered anyway because Black Pete was running up in the house regardless. Nautica and Manny would have died together either way.
All that lip quivering Manny was doing behind his love for Nautica and his feelings being hurt when he thought she was betraying him had me in my feelings. I wish he got a chance to hear from her why she did it. He died thinking Nautica and Loon were setting him up from jump because they're from the same place.

Whew 4.5 Stars, this was a REALLY GOOD read guys!!! I stuck my nose in this one and had a hard time pulling it out. I was trying hard to read straight thru the night but I couldn't keep my eyes open.
This author, JaQuavis Coleman, is only in his mid 20's and it just blows my mind that he's such a seasoned Urban writer. He writes as if he has many years of experience under his belt! His stories flow, the character development is on point and he has a way of just pulling you right in, so much so that you forget you're reading a book, YOU'RE THERE and all up in the mix...lol!!!
I wasn't really into the Urban genre until I started reading Ashley & JaQuavis's work. These two write wonderfully together as well as on their own and I think they have a long and successful career ahead of them for sure!
Even if Urban books aren't your thing, you will enjoy this one and if they are your thing, you'll LOVE this one! I am ordering the sequel(s) today so that I can keep the drama and excitement coming! Great job JaQuavis!!!!
I don't read urban/street lit. If I do someone I know recommend it to me to read. So this one, got sent to me through Audible. I listen to it. I liked it. But I will say, the book left me feeling piss off by the end especially the ending. I lean my head to the side like damn Tical how could you be that stupid. I've always been told men controls the women. But nah, the things Ive been seeing it goes both ways. Women can have the upper hand when it comes to us men who actually gives the woman our heart. You have the stupid women you have the smart ones who aren't blind. And Nautical wasn't one of the stupid females. She had Tical, all I was saying is RUN man, before she get you. And she did. When Loon and Nautical got killed, I was happy then a mug lol. I was over her like the BTNH song "Die, Die, Die. I was waiting patiently for their killer to stick it to them lol. I think Mille should've left Tical, but he was a fool himself. But I think he didn't want to date her because she was like a sister to him or whatever. But hell man he was better of with Mille, I knew she wasn't going to die. But when she finds out Tical died I know she's going to lose her shit. I own both book 2 and 3, not sure when I'll ever read them. Since I thought this book was good, and wanted to see what happened next, I said why not get the other series. So I check out B&N when I went to get me some comics and zombie Apocalypse books.
I rate this book 3 ⭐️’s and for good reasons in my opinion. To start off the title is completely false and should be named “The Dopeman’s long term girlfriend”. The main character was fighting for her life 👊🏾to actually become wifey….for it to all to still fail. It should never be that hard sis, that’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.
Now, I am a true audio and kindle girlie at heart. It was incredibly hard to follow the entire book because the audio and/or the book would have different versions of the text. Chile, it was a mess 😂.
Overall, the book kept me turning them pages with anticipation for what would be next. I was in my feelings towards the ending but I won’t reveal that. If you like a lil hood w/ spice and everything nice. Go ahead and give this book a chance.
If you got this far, thanks for reading. Please comment on how you would feel on holding down a man who doesn’t put a ring on it?

I've been reading a good bit of urban lit lately and I love it. It's not a genre you read for anything life altering or philosophical, but it's fast-paced, sexy, and entertaining.
This book tries really hard to fit that mold but falls a little short. My main complaint was all the sex. I am far, far from a prude, but oh my god it seemed like every single chapter contained a sex scene, and it was the least attractive sounding sex ever. If I hear one more genital described as a "pipe" or "tool," I think I'll beat someone over the head. I wasn't expecting anything Pulitzer Prize worthy, but come on, I think you can describe sex a little better than "[he] plunged deep into her wound, a slurping noise filled the air, and they grunted in unison." Pretty sure that made me asexual.
Other than the sex, this book was great--very fast-paced, tons of action & surprising twists constantly. The ending made my jaw drop!
So much going on here. Realistic story, some parts were disturbing. Very intense thriller, had me on edge. Very detailed as well so not recommended to read by just ANYONE.
Loved the audio read, I was so into it. Great reading by Nicole Small. A lot of murder, street action, & sex. Not my usual genre but I came across it on Audible and had good ratings so I had to peak for myself! 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Overall this book was good. I was back and forth between 5,4,3, stars and landed on 4...because it was so much going on. I really felt like it was just overly crowded with things....but it had me flipping them pages though....mouth open, disgusted, mad, a little sad...all the emotions that keep me interested so I had to give it a 4.
I don’t know about this book, lol! They literally called Millie, Nautica in the book (“ Nautica reaches down to grab her suitcase”, when it was Millie” and it was literally just too much silly decision being made. I wanted to like it. Another rushed book!
The Dope man’s Wife JaQuavis Coleman for writing The Dope man’s wife was to let his readers know about the everyday life of some people who get money illegally. Learning the tricks and treats of the streets where you don’t always have to work for what you want, you just take it. The Dope man’s wife is a very exciting, outrageous book. This book could be inspirational to some people who like learning about things that happen in the streets or just overall like books that are very captivating. The excitement in this book is increasing always. The Dope man’s wife was a really good book.
The Dope man’s wife was a very good book. The book was very easy for me to read because every page in the book lead to something exciting happens. The author provides details from the book that can be so deep you probably wouldn’t believe the action that goes on in it. For example, the main character Nautica thought her days were coming to an end after she and her cousin Khia robbed the man she thought she loved. Nautica’s cousin was killed by her ex in the robbery and she thought nothing could turn out right after that. (Nautica kept shaking Khia, but it was no use. The bullet had killed her on contact.) Even though Nautica knew she wasn’t ready to start a new life, she had to for her cousin Khia. Even though it was a rough start Nautica found her way in the city of Baltimore, she fell in love with a new man that she knew loved and cared for her more than anything else in the world his name was Tical. When Nautica’s past came back to haunt her, she tried her best to play a game no one knew she could play. This book was very spectacular. Everything was intense in this book, from the beginning to the end. Nautica’s personality was very open- minded. She knew that she had to do the best that she could to find herself and start over in life because that she had been living someone’s crazy, wild dream. It was clear to me that this book could have a big effect on some of the readers because of the environment and happenings of the book. After trying her hardest for a better life she finds one and tries not remembering her past. That is until it comes back to haunt her. (“Oh my god she whispered her breaths became shallow and her heart skipped a beat”) her ex’s friend was standing inside the den of her new man’s house. In the book I related to Nautica the most because she knew that she had to start fresh and right after she had been through so much in her life. When Nautica’s past comes back to haunt her, she does whatever it takes so that her man Tical will not find out and leave her. I would recommend this book to a few of my friends because all my friends like exciting things and stuff that they know can happen in the streets at any time. In the end of this book I learned that love never dies, but it is able to kill you.
I gave this book 5 days and 5 chapters, more than enough to get interesting. And it just fails. I cannot finish it and I won't invest any additional time into it when I have other great novels I want to read this year. My biggest problem with The Dopeman's Wife is that the novel is so erratic. It's all over the place. For example, in Chapter 4, Zion gets mad at Nautica (who he saw dancing at a strip club) for wanting to celebrate her cousin's birthday, which happens to be at a strip club, because he doesn't think she should be there, then he decides that he can distract Nautica from wanting to go to the strip club by giving her money to go shopping, then tells her he's leaving to go to Detroit, then Nautica responds by saying, Aren't you going to Baltimore? Then Zion gets upset that she knows he's going to Baltimore because he didn't tell her that though he goes the 15th of every month. To curb his anger, Nautica tells him she worries about him, she is aware of his line of work, which isn't strictly "dope dealing" (you out the figure title, I refuse), and doesn't want him to get hurt. Then Zion tells Nautica about his desire to have a menage a trois. When she balks at this, he decides he'll get her high enough and make her do what he wants anyway.
What the hell? No really. None of this is related. Note to the author: YOU ARE REQUIRED TO GIVE READERS BACKGROUND! If Zion is a two faced guy who's a King around his friends and a jealous bully at home, TELL US before you use it later in the story because it looks like an afterthought. Something you just used to beef up the book. Cmon. If Nautica is a naive twit, give us some background on this and lead up to her meeting Zion. Otherwise, intelligent readers have to grapple with the nonsensical revelatory order of events taking place in the novel. And is that really fair to us? No. It's not. I want a decent urban lit novella. Not a journal entry from The Riddler.
This book was good ! I enjoyed listening to the audio while working. I must say Nautica could’ve made better choices but none the less this book is action packed and I enjoyed all if it.
sooo this book has me in awe. i love love love jaqavis and his wife ashley books..since reading girls from da hood and murder mamas. i was very depressed about tical dying however.. and i didnt really want nautica to die either because despite what she did she had some good reasonings behind all of it.. she didnt want to lose tical.. tical completely turned her into a different person .. and she didnt want to lose him due to her past. LOON . i was damn happy when he got killed finally his unloyalness and sneaky conniving ways made me have so much hate for him. millie.. the ending really has me worried and im so glad i have the second book to par to read .. im going to take my time reading this until my 3rd and final book comes in.
tical was my favorite character he did so much for nautica and despite how he did him in the end he didnt really have it in his heart to kill her himself he really loved that girl and it was sad how they literally died together.. i wonder if he forgave her or not.. and whats going on with millie i have a strong feeling that she is going to be back on the drugs and tical was the only one who could keep her off of em.. and he is now gone. book 2 of the series here i come !!!
I liked the book I definitely wish the ended played out a different way ! Understanding the game and just listening to the book I felt she definitely caused a lot of unnecessary drama and killings! Glad that Millie didn’t die but wished his right hand was still alive . I felt like if she would’ve just said something to him once she turned around things would’ve been better. Looking over the preview of the next two books I was hoping the author made some sort of connection with any of the previous characters but it doesn’t look like it . So I’m not sure if I’ll read the next 2. I think a little part of me wanted her to have a true happy fairytale but that’s life and karma definitely catches up with you in the end if you don’t confess and take accountability!

After attempting to read through this couple's catalog I've just come to the realization that the standard is extremely low, and that has to be the reason for all the five stars that they consistently receive. I'll give them credit for drawing your attention into the story, but keeping it is a struggle. A lot of their books are the same story told over and over again and their plots are all over the place. I enjoy urban fiction especially when it's done well, unfortunately for this couple they seem to lack creativity. They both seem to use the same formula which results in the same story, and the same characters with different names, and the same books with different titles.
My reviews about this storyline was hard to follow at times throughout the book. There were so many lead characters in the story that didn't make sense to even be in the story such as Khia and her man why were they eliminated. Nautica only owned a car that was never put in her name nor did she really buy are legitimately work for it. She stole the money from Zyia and she wasn't so bright.
Manny wasn't so bright either when it came to women. The thing he hated about stripper's he end up being with one who made a fool out of him and the girl he called his little sister was young but much smarter than Nautica and Manny both.
If Manny was so street smart and wise with talking care of business why didn't he run a background check on Nautica to be sure her beauty is honest with him. I just couldn't believe her and manny together as a couple
Church and Gun and play didn't really have much to do but be a frontman. I just didn't get why the book was called a Dopeman's wife when she didn't do anything but fucked him whenever she wanted too. She didn't have anything going on for herself but her past scheme, steal, backstab, street hustler, stripper and drugs. Her polite movie keep her from being broke.
The book was very misleading. It should have been called street hustlers and the women they choose to be with like them.
