Diamond Cove

A Summer Mismatch

Rate this book
He’s an irresistible vet who keeps everyone at a distance. She’s a children’s book author in a small beach town. Their families are archrivals, but the forbidden has never looked so sweet.

Logan Kent is the one man I should stay away from.

His grandpa ruined my family’s business. Or maybe my grandpa ruined his family’s business. It depends on who you ask, but businesses were wrecked.

Yet when I run into him (literally) on one of the worst days of my life, it only takes one smile (and one sniff of his should-be-illegal, divine cologne) for me to fall head over heels.

Not only does he smell good (trust me, he does), he’s great with kids, elephants, and my brother, Cameron, who is staying with me for the summer.

But I can’t fall for Enemy Number One.

My grandma seems determined to matchmake us—even if her methods are straight out of the Most Dramatic Season Ever of my favorite show.

Too bad our grandpas will do anything to separate us, even if it tears us all apart.

Star-crossed lovers has a nice ring to it, right?

For readers who love sweet and steamy kisses, scheming matchmakers, and wished Romeo and Juliet had more alligators, elephants, antics, and a swoony happily ever after.

Elephants, alligators, and love...oh my!

I love the Secret Seven and their matchmaking shenanigans. While this group has a lot of fun and a good camaraderie, I loved seeing some of their problems and how they banded together.

Teacher and children's author, Julia, and Logan, a large animal vet (think elephants) are the groups targets. I loved their initial meeting and rainbow zebra scrubs, elephants, dancing, behind the curtain, too small dress, and feuding grandpas undermining the S7's efforts made this story endearing, entertaining, and exactly what I needed for a rough, emotional week.

Baldwin does a great job of writing life into her characters, while staying true to the charm of Diamond Cove. Cameron, Julia's brother with Down Syndrome, was one of my favorites. I laughed, I swooned, and I teared up. Such a fun and delightful Romeo and Juliet story!

Content: mild romance

I really enjoyed reading this new book in the Diamond Cove series because I wanted to see who the Secret Seven matchmakers from The Palms had chosen for their next match.  I liked meeting Julia, who was Winnie's sweet granddaughter. This book really focused on family  and Julia taking care of her brother, Cameron, while her parents were away.  I liked the fun escapades by the matchmakers and everything about the sweet, swoon worthy story.  I especially liked Julia and Logan and how they seemed to be the perfect match for each other and it was so much fun reading how they first met.  I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly chose to write an honest review.

4.5⭐️

This was a new-to-me author, and I was unsure of how I would enjoy the story, since rom-coms can be a hit-or-miss for me. Well, I needn’t have worried; I was hooked from the beginning and laughed throughout the entire story.

Enter Julia, the woman who can’t say “no.” I felt this personally…so relatable although I’ve gotten better the older I get, haha.

There are just so many things I loved about this book:

•Julia and Logan’s meeting at the gas station
•Winnie and the Secret Seven group of retirees with matchmaking skills
•Cameron: I loved how his Down Syndrome aspect was well handled and really sweet
•Arch-enemies Horace and Smitty working together to prevent their grandchildren, Logan and Julia, from falling in love while their wives try to set Logan and Julia up
•Horace and Smitty texting and battling against autocorrect while Smitty and Lydia argue about the pronunciation of GIF

Books don’t usually make me laugh aloud, but I was dying of laughter all throughout this one.

The premise of the story is a bit of a spin off of Romeo and Juliet. When I read the play in high school, I was utterly disgusted and chalked it all up as rather pathetic. However, Baldwin’s contemporary spin was way more believable and realistic then the original, making it enjoyable instead of ridiculous.

When it came to the romance, I appreciated that it was more sweet and comical instead of steamy. Sure there was some kissing and physical attraction, but the sweetness and comedy really shine through more prominently. Plus there’s a huge focus on multi-generational family relationships that was so wonderful!

I’m intrigued to read more of the books in the series and revisit these hilarious characters!

Content: mild physical attraction, innuendo, and kissing; mention of Mother Earth

The Secret Seven are at it again. And they make me laugh with their bumbling ways. The music they played at the lake cracked me up. I feel like they are getting worse at matchmaking as they go along but they are always 100% on getting their two people matched. I think it would be fun to watch these guys at work in a movie. Oh, and the grandparental texting. Hilarious.
I enjoyed the romance. The meet-cute was fun and each awkward experience after...
I enjoyed the addition of a brother with Down Syndrome. I babysit a sweet boy with autism who is learning to use a "talker". I liked hearing how Cameron had learned to communicate well.
This was an enjoyable read and I'm really enjoying this series.

No sex, language or violence

If you like books with romance that is both swoon-worthy and clean, clever banter, charming and believable main characters as well as secondary characters, and a page-turner book that will keep you up late--then this book is for you! Also I learned a lot about elephants (fascinating) and I came to appreciate more than ever before the joy and value that a child with Down Syndrome can bring to a family. I loved it so much and highly recommend it! I received an ARC from the author and this voluntary review contains my honest opinions.

This book is a modern day Romeo and Juliet story that is based in a retirement community in Florida. It is a more cute and sweet version with a lot better if an ending. I love the fun elderly matchmakers. Josie’s brother Cameron and the elephants really give the story heart. Overall a great book.

Reader’s Notes:

– this book is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone

– this is told from Winnie (Julia’s grandma), Horace (Julia’s grandpa- only tells things a few times), Julia, and Logan’s points of view

– Julia’s brother (Cameron) has Down Syndrome

– some characters are grieving a parent/child who they lost a year ago

Review:

Guys, I stayed up last night til almost 4am finishing this book! And not because it released today and I wanted it read before now, but because I was so into what was going on in the story! Julia and Logan’s story was so sweet and funny! I loved reading about their antics, whether it was their (what should have been) creepy first meeting (don’t let little kids do your makeup!), dancing with Cameron, panic hiding behind a curtain, or randomly seeing each other so many times. 😂😍 It was also funny to read about the Secret Seven and their matchmaking attempts for the two of them. As well as what that entailed to get it together! The old folk in the group were very sneaky in their maneuvering of Julia and Logan to get them together so many times, but they are still learning how to text. So there’s some misuse of emojis (💩 is a chocolate chip, right?) and typos from frustrated texters 😂 that lead to some very funny messages in the group (down another rabbit trail…and another…oh wait, one more!). But seriously it was such an interesting story with all these different elements combining to create such a great romantic comedy. ❤️

Julia needs to learn to say no and speak up for herself. Her boyfriend is yet again asking for them to take a break, just like the last couple summers. Her job keeps piling on work that she doesn’t have time for and doesn’t bother to wait for her to actually reply. It’ll be a yes for sure, so why wait for the confirmation? It’s just a lot, especially since she already agreed to take care of her brother this summer and she doesn’t want to cut her time with him short.

Logan has had enough loss in the past year that he certainly doesn’t want to lose anyone or anything else. He’s closed himself up and is now only a shade of who he used to be. Until one day a girl with crazy makeup accidentally bumps into him and he feels happiness for the first time in a long time.

Though neither Julia nor Logan expected to see each other again, they are happily surprised to see one another multiple times between the zoo and The Palms where both of their grandparents live. The only snag is that their grandfathers hate each other and aren’t willing to let them be together.

But Julia and Logan’s hearts don’t want to follow their logical thoughts of keeping their grandfathers happy, they want to meet with each other as much as they can. Too bad their grandfathers’ grudge is so deep in them that they’re willing to do just about anything to keep them apart…

This story had many threads woven together around and about. The basic story line has the Secret Seven trying to help one of the grandchildren find true love. Julia is a loving beautiful woman who lets others take advantage of her time and good nature. There is Logan who feels things deeply trying to recover from his own earth shattering events in the last year with his mom’s unexpected death. His whole family is floundering. Cameron is Julia’s younger brother who has Downs Syndrome and is mostly nonverbal. He loves Logan and the elephants that he cares for. Then there is Grandpa Smitty and Grandpa Horace who used to be best friends and business partners until their stubbornness got in the way and they became bitter foes. The only thing they agreed upon was that their grandchildren were not, under any circumstances going to fall in love, even if they had to play dirty tricks to keep them apart.
This was a longer book than I expected, but it was necessary to weave all the stories together. Yes old dogs can learn new tricks. This is fun and funny, thoughtful and goofy and clean and wholesome. I received this as an ARC.

I adored this book from beginning to end!

This book opens with Julia's Grandma Winnie scheming with her friends to spend the summer finding Julia a perfect match. Every good romcom needs a scheming grandparent and this one delivers.

Logan and Julia were adorable together. Their meet-cute was hilarious, but also so sweet and you were immediately wanting them to get together! Of course, they had an uphill battle to overcome because their grandfathers hate each other!

There are so many favorite parts of this book, but ultimately, Cameron-Julia's younger brother who has Down Syndrome and is non-verbal-and the baby elephants were the absolute BEST! You don't often read about realistic special needs characters, but the author did an amazing job portraying Cameron as a whole person, not just his disability, while also showing the struggles he has with his health and communicating with others. He was really at the center of bringing Logan and Julia together and it was beautiful!

This book does deal with harder topics; death, divorce, family member with special needs, etc.

Julia lived in Florida, she was a 2nd grade teacher that had a hard time saying no to anyone and was always a people pleaser. On her way home from work (after her class did her makeup) she stops at a gas station. She runs into Logan, not knowing him beforehand. She spills her guts and then gets out of there as fast as possible.
Logan is in Florida, he is trying to get his family back together. To have some unity and love. He is very excited to have his grandparents moving into the Palms.
Logan and Julia meet and began to like each other, however, they find out that their grandparents are archrivals. Julia, being the people pleaser doesn't want to upset her grandparents by dating Logan.
But as they get closer they realize that they care deeply for each other and want to move thigs forward.
With one grandparent trying to get them together and one trying to break them up, things get interesting. After misunderstandings and good talks everyone gets their happily ever after.
I was given an ARC of this book, I left this review voluntarily. All opinions expressed are my own.

I liked Logan and Julia. I thought they were a great couple. Cameron stole the scene so many times, especially when he danced. I liked learning about the elephants. Sweetie and Bear had a great scene stealer with the help of others. I was glad to see growth from our characters. I laughed, I cried. I had a good time. I will read more in this series.

This book is crazy adorable in every way. I seriously could not get enough of Julia and Logan!! 💗

Julia, teacher and picture book author, meets Logan, handsome vet and all-around amazing guy, in quite the memorable meet cute.

Neither expects to see the other again but don’t realize that their grandmas are friends and have decided they would make the perfect couple.

The problem? Their grandpas hate each other and are determined to keep them away from each other.

Cue the hilarity as a group of matchmaking seniors concocts one scenario after another to get Julia and Logan together while two rivals combine forces to keep them apart.

Great character depth and growth combined with lots of humor and sooooo much fantastic chemistry between Julie and Logan. Honestly, every time they were on page together I sighed with happiness.

Sooo much to love about this book!

The elephants 🐘

The Secret Seven's next mission is Winnie's granddaughter Julia and Winnie's husband Horace's arch enemy Smitty's grandson Logan. Has to laugh when Julia and Logan met after her class did her makeup on the last day of class. Also loved how Logan was with Julia's Down Syndrome brother Cameron. Will their grandfather's ever get out of their way to romance? Love all the books in the Secret Seven series, but this one was especially cute and heartwarming.

This is my voluntary review of a copy I received from the publisher.

Great characters.
All of the characters that interact more than a couple of times in the story are amazing and complex.
The main couple are kind, caring, and loyal to their families, and had complex lives outside of their blooming relationship.
The grandparents are.... well... nuts! They were fun to watch in action.

This was a great addition to the series!

Julia and Logan find themselves attracted to each other prior to the Secret Seven get involved with the matchmaking but their efforts are sabotaged by two meddling grandpa. It is a lovely story with lots of elements of family, loss, self worth, challenges, and rivals. There is also a lot of fun, friendships, love, music and delightful elephants. A really enjoyable read with lovable characters.

The Secret Seven have chosen their next match and they are all pretty excited about it until someone starts getting in the way and ruining their careful plans. The newest match is Julia and Logan, perfect for each other for many reasons but mostly for their love of elephants. This story was fun, I enjoyed all the match making attempts even the ones that didn't work.

I love how the books in this series are about more than just the two falling in love. This one has you navigating around strained friendships between the residents of Diamond Cove. This story is a forbidden love trope. There was great character development for Julia as she learns to speak up for herself. I liked the plotline with the exotic animal vet. It was fun, and I like that it wasn't something I'd read about before.

The Secret Seven are determined to make a match between Julia and Logan. The problem; their grandfathers absolutely despise each other and are just determined that there will never be a match between the two.

Logan is a large animal vet. He especially loves working with elephants. When he first meets Julia, she looks like a hot mess after an afternoon with her elementary school class and their attempts to "makeup" her face. He is instantly smitten by her, though, in spite of how she looks.

Julia has an on/again off/again boyfriend. At this moment, it is off. . . again. When she meets Logan, she notices what a handsome man he is. And, when she takes her younger brother, Cameron, to the zoo to the see the elephants, she meets up with Logan again. This time, she looks a little better than the first.

As their relationship progresses, and the Secret Seven make their moves and the grandpas make their opposing moves, it is anyone's guess how this will work out. In the end, there is a happy ending and all are happy once again.

It is a sweet story and a continuation of a fun series with the Secret Seven.

I was given an arc copy of this book and I willingly offer my honest review.

Ok this book was adorable 🥰

I usually have a hard time getting into third person books but this was super easy to read. I believe this is part of a series of interconnected standalones, I read this one by itself and it still made perfect sense.

The Secret Seven is a group of older ones in a retirement community that get together to matchmake their grandchildren. Winnie is trying to find someone for her granddaughter Julia. Julia ends up meeting Logan on her own under very funny circumstances. They have an instant connection but when they meet a second time they discover something no so great. Their grandfathers are sworn enemies after their business partnership went downhill and don't want their grandkids around each other.
They both don't want to disappoint their grandfathers but also are realizing they really care about each other.
Also, after seeing them together their grandmothers are trying to set them up. So that is definitely an adventure 😂
Julia's little brother Cameron was a big part of this story. It was really interesting learning about a character with Down Syndrome and I loved how much both Julia and Logan loved her brother, it was so sweet.
Logan is a wildlife vet who works with elephants which was super cool. And Julia is a teacher/author of children's books. I had so much fun learning about the elephant's personalities and seeing Julia's character grow as she learned to stand up for herself.
This book was hilarious. So many mishaps and situations between them. It's mostly duel POV with Logan and Julia but the grandparents get a couple chapters in their perspective which was fun. I loved the ending. And all the animals made this story so entertaining, even the alligator 🐊😂

Thank you to Bookfunnel and Kaylee Baldwin for an early ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVE these books set in Diamond Cove. Each of the authors who wrote them have done a great job staying true to the characters that carry over from book to book. And they’ve all done a great job with their love story too.

This one by Kaylee Baldwin features one of my most favorite meet cutes ever! You’re going to have to read it to see why. But I just loved the way that Julia and Logan met. It set up the whole book so well. And it just fit the two characters.

I love Julia. She’s so selfless. I love how she’s caring for her younger brother for the summer while her parents are on a dream trip. And he had some challenges, so that would not have been easy. One thing about Julia is that she doesn’t know how to say no at the beginning. I loved how she started standing up for herself little by little as the book went on.

Logan is a great guy. He’s had a lot of hard things happen in his life in a short amount of time. He really just needs a breather. But that’s not quite what he gets. I loved how he steps up and becomes the person everyone and every animal around him needs him to be.

I loved the forbidden love aspect of this book. The whole story just sucked me in. And I loved every minute of it!

I was sent a copy of A Summer Mismatch as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

ADORABLE! That is the best word I can think of to describe this absolutely delightful story. This is the first book I've read by Kaylee Baldwin, but after the way this book brightened my day, I know I will be reading more and more of her stories. I loved the character cast so much. The Secret Seven were hilarious and I loved the silly text messages and way they all tried to use technology only to have mishaps that just made me smile.
Logan and Julia were such a great match. The plot was fun, it made me feel good, and the romance was super sweet. It's the kind of wholesome romance that gives you all the feels and is super positive that you can't help but feel good reading it. I would say the style and content level are similar to Meg Easton and Rachel John who I also highly recommend.
I definitely enjoyed this book and not only recommend it, but look forward to reading more by this author.

This is the cutest story about Elephants, A teen brother, a handsome huge-hearted Vet, a sweet, beautiful writer/teacher and a bunch of grandparents with matchmaking on their brains. This story is full of sweet and silly moments, fun characters, trouble and fun time, and also some sad and heartfelt moments. I absolutely loved Cameron, Adia, and Kai. Logan and Julia are so perfect for each other, their chemistry is undeniable, but their grandfathers feud makes it impossible for them to have a future. The Secret Seven are at it again in trying to set up Logan and Julia, however this time they are faced with more resistance as Horace and Smitty work against them. I loved the chemistry between Cameron, Julia and Logan. I love reading about the secret seven and all the antics they get into for love, and how much they love their families. I also enjoyed all the facts about Elephants, lulu's adventures and the adventures they go through. I loved the banter between these friends at the Palms so much that I wished they were real so I could befriend them.

Great Book

This is the second book I've read by this author and my first impression of her writing has held true. Kaylee Baldwin is amazing. She can take an ordinary sweet romance story & turn it into something extraordinarily special. She's a very talented writer with a great sense of humor about all things silly and ridiculous (which I adore in any author).

I really enjoyed this book. The relationship between the hero & heroine is really sweet and there is witty banter between the two that seems natural and unforced. I also loved the funny grandparents moments (they are sooo very bad at matchmaking which cracks me up), the insights into having a beloved family member with Downs Syndrome, and getting to spend time with a close knit community of family & dear friends that seem so real that I wish I had a similar group like that in my own life. I highly recommend this book. It's very well-written. ❤

Matchmaking senior citizens feuding grandfathers elephants and an aligator

I love the matchmaking senior citizens. Julia and Logan were going to get together and their antics were not always helpful but they were entertaining. Julia is teaching summer school and taking care of her younger brother who has Down's Syndrome. Julia and Logan meet accidently the first time but don't even exchange names. They connect when she takes her brother Cameron to the animal sanctuary. He likes the animals but he loves the elphants. Logan is a vet who specializes in caring for elephants. He and Cameron are buddies and he trys to see Cameron when he comes on Tuesday.

Their story is sweet and they seem so good together. I love how her brother and his niece and nephew are incorporated into the story. Cameron and his health problems are treated in a positive way. I recommend for a quick enteratining read.

Excellent, silly and realistic...

A Summer Mismatch jumps right into stories of grief, anxiety and overwhelming responsibilities.
But.. also the joy and peace that can be found in those same overwhelming experiences.
6 Stars- the experiences are so realistic that a couple times, I was crying and I even found myself praying for those involved!
The seniors at the Palms retirement community are eccentric and wonderful! They take matchmaking to another level of crazy!
The two kids they're trying to pair up would have a better chance if they were on their own! Haha!!
He is a young vet caring for elephants, his sister and his grandparents. She is a elementary teacher who is trying to balance summer school and taking care of her amazing brother with down syndrome.
The best parts are the mostly sweet, sometimes sour family dynamics between grandparents and grandchildren. In this novel, with trials and rivals, each character has to decide what truly matters most.

I saw a recommendation for this book and decided to read just a few chapters to kill some time. I wasn’t really expecting much from the description and the reviews, but I did end up finishing the book. I honestly can’t explain what kept me reading…Maybe it’s because the story could have been a pretty good one if there wasn’t so much cheesy dialogue that makes you cringe and weird scenes added in. I think the club of Grandparents playing matchmaker is a cute idea but all of the dialogue back and forth became boring and weird. The alligator playing dress up was weird and unbelievable. Having everything resolved in the end was drug out for weeks when it didn’t need to be, the main characters weren’t mad at each other they just didn’t pick up a phone or go see each other for absolutely no reason. The whole story just fell super flat. The romance between Julia and Logan was ok but not anything memorable.
