In a remote village, a man named Azaiah goes wreathed in flowers and smiling to the sacrificial altar, willing to die to keep his village safe from plague. But the Harvester has something else in store for Azaiah, and it isn’t the shores of the world beyond that await him…but the cloak and scythe itself. Being Death means a long life that nevertheless requires a connection to humanity, and Azaiah learns that corruption awaits those who do not find a mortal companion to keep them tethered to the world. He finds it in Nyx, a soldier from an ancient empire and an adopted son of the Emperor, whose soul burns bright enough that Azaiah is certain immortality won’t be a burden but a gift.

But then a shocking betrayal changes Nyx from a gruff soldier with a kind heart to a man bent on vengeance, swearing fealty not to Azaiah, but his sibling, Ares. With Nyx set on destroying the empire that was once his home, Azaiah is dangerously close to losing himself to the corruption that threatens those who lose their tether to the mortal world.

Nyx once loved the Empire and the family that took him in, but when the perfidy of his adopted brother results in a tragedy beyond his ability to bear, Nyx wants nothing more than to burn the world in his wake. Turning from the quiet, intriguing Azaiah toward the promise of bloody vengeance, Nyx gives his vows to Ares and watches the empire he once served fall into ruin. But as the years pass, vengeance is a cold comfort, and the man who is now called Glaive is determined to save Azaiah from being lost in the dark.

STORMFRONT is the first book in the IMMORTALS DESCENDING series, featuring gods in search of their eternal companions.

Still love love loving this one!

-----------------Original Review Oct 2022-----------
4.5 Stars

I love how each of the series these authors have written are tied together in a way that adds layers to what you're read before, without making the previous series mandatory to enjoy the current one.

It took me a bit to really see the threads that connect, mostly to the Seasons of the Lukoi, but also to The Last Flight of Marius Chastain in the Starian Cycle series, but once I started seeing them, and remembering the foreshadowing in those other series I was so happy.

Nix and Azaiah go through so much. My gosh, angst for days and a separation for the ages, before finding themselves and with each other, their happy. My heart hurt watching them almost lose themselves to shadow but they do find their way. Eventually.

I kind of want to reread the other two series now, to revisit the foreshadowing I remember.

I'm looking forward to the next installment!

Sigh, I finished this - but at what cost?

I love the biokink and world elements Iris Foxglove creates in their series. This one, didn't work for me as a romance.

Highly recommend reading the other series out before this one, since there are spoilers and cameos from past characters. This also continues to toe the line of having non traditional HEAs (which is fine, I just like knowing it going in that the leads are going to die but be happy in eternity together, ok?!)

There's a lot of spoilers in this for other books/characters stories. There's a meh romance between these leads, and so much time where they're separated and not together. I love pining and angst, this one wasn't for me.

Is it a surprise that I loved this, given how I adore this author duo and every book they write? Probably not, but honestly, this might be the strongest entry in this truly delightful fantasy world. I loved everything about it, I cried at least four times, and the ending was SO satisfying. Azaiah was such a sweetheart, and my heart broke for Nyx and the truly impossible choices he had to make. While the conflict was very high stakes and very much rooted in the established world, the theme of duty/family versus personal desires was relatable in a very real way. It's one thing I love about fantasy and why it's my favorite genre, when it's done well -- and it very much is, here. The concepts of love and war and loss and grief might play out in a very grandiose way, but at the heart this is a love story between two people who have to confront their shadow selves in order to be together.

I also loved the way the authors wove lore from their other two series into this one -- it really does tie all these books together in a wonderful way, and still allow them to be read by new readers. I definitely appreciated getting Glaive's POV from a certain pivotal scene from a previous book, and it was definitely one of the parts that had me in tears.

Again, this is probably my favorite queer fantasy author(s), so I am probably biased but if you are looking for an immersive, emotional, heart-rending and satisfying love story, this is for you. If you like fantasy with incredible world-building and a great love story, this is also for you!

October 2022!

In which the Lord of Storms, Azaiah, god of Death....falls in love with a soldier from a corrupt empire, struggling to keep those he loves safe from the influence of his increasingly unstable foster-brother who is set to inherit the throne. Nyx wants nothing more than to become Azaiah's immortal companion, but a betrayal -- and rash decision to pledge his sword to Ares, the god of war, in search of vengeance -- puts them both on a path of ruin and redemption that will span eons.

(Or, if you were wondering wtf happened in the rain in Marius' book with Glaive and the enigmatic man kneeling in the rain? This would be that story :D)

This was so close to bring something incredibly special. It is an epic book with some really great feelings in it. Unfortunately most of that book is sadness with our MCs separated for 800 years just fucking around being sad. This would’ve hit harder if the beginnings of the story had hit more from the romance angle but somehow it was basically instalove with no chemistry or relationship building. Honestly the piece were there for something that would’ve crushed me and put me back together with its absolutely lovely ending, but it just didn’t quite hit the mark.

Warning spoiler below:
.
..

….
…..
……

One of the MCs, while separated from the other MC for reasons, but both MCs are still wildly in love with each other, has sex with someone else. This didn’t crush me due to the lack of relationship building in the beginning but it COULD have, and I’m certainly not a fan of that regardless.

Storm Front is a wildly intriguing epic fantasy from author team Iris Foxglove. It’s the first book in the Immortals Descending series. After reading the last chapter, I went immediately to the “also by” part to see when the next book would be released and noticed two things. First, the sequel is already available. Second, there are a plethora of other books by Iris Foxglove and many characters from Foxgloves’ other series appear in Storm Front. Sometimes, supporting characters end up stealing the show. Not so with Storm Front. Azaiah and Nyx’s tale consumed my imagination entirely. Even though I was deeply curious about what happened to Ares and Avaice (two other gods in Azaiah’s familial pantheon), they helped build on Azaiah’s and Nyx’s story. Hats off to the authors for so effectively incorporating interesting side characters (who clearly have lives outside the pages of this book). And realizing that at least some of these characters have whole books all their own? Shut up and take my money.

I started reading the books set in this fantasy world because I was interested in how the authors play with the biological power exchange facet. Now that I’m happily sucked into the third series, I’m almost entirely here for the worldbuilding and amazing characters and relationship they have developed. The power exchange bit is a touch of extra flavor in a solid fantasy creation that is so much more than just the spicy bits. And as if all the “present-day” worldbuilding wasn’t enough, now Foxglove dives into the truly mythological and historical facets of Iperios. I think readers can come to this book fresh, but it ties closely to The Last Flight of Marius Chastain (A Starian Tale) and Summer of the Wanderer (Seasons of the Lukoi #3) and is a bit spoilery for both, but not in a way that would diminish enjoyment of either.

As always, the stories that turn to myth are much simpler than reality. This book presents the background that leads to the creation of modern-day Lukos and Arktos, from the perspectives of Nyx, a soldier inextricably tied to political events, and Azaiah, the avatar of Death who is drawn to him. Nyx’s story kicks off with a tragedy that already made my heart hurt for him, and despite the good moments that accompany his romantic dance with Death, it only gets harder for him from there. Have tissues handy if you’re prone to tears—the angst is real in this book. The authors lean into the tarot definition of death representing change, and both Nyx and Azaiah make their share of changes throughout this story. These changes are certainly dark, but they are not necessarily bad, and ultimately show how tragedy and pain can corrupt even the best intentions.

The redemption arc for both characters that follows is painful but necessary. Love may cause the initial rift that occurs between them, but it also plays a strong role in healing it. I especially adored the “flashbacks” that we get for contemporary characters from alternative perspectives. Whether Foxglove planned out the multiple layers of story in advance is irrelevant, because reading how everything ties together here is incredibly satisfying and impressive either way.

I was curious why the authors chose Death as the god to kick off this new series about the more mythological side of their amazing fantasy world. In this book, we get his entire story along with fantastic teases of the rest of his godly cohort, and despite all the problems he has along the way, it turns out Azaiah/Death might be the most sorted of them all. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series and follow up with so many fascinating secondary characters.

Storm Front is the first book in the Immortals Descending series by Iris Foxglove, and it was a book I could not put down. It was a story that covered so much, pulling me in deep throughout, and has ensured I am desperate to read more by the author.

I will start by being completely honest and say that I was conflicted with my rating for this one. There were points with this when I considered giving it a five-star rating, but I rounded my four-point-five-star rating down in the end. Why? Because I felt there were a few times when things moved a little slowly and dragged. I did not dislike these moments, but I did not enjoy them quite as much as I enjoyed the other moments in the book. My hope is that the future books in the series will be without these moments, allowing me to easily give five-star ratings to the future books.

If the future books are anything like this one, I’m sure it will be easy to hand out a five-star rating. Storm Front introduced me to a complex world, one with many elements that have me curious. It seems there are links to other stories from the author, but you do not need to have read them to understand this one. I will be going and reading them out of curiosity, but even without the knowledge from other books, this was a story that contained countless elements that kept me engaged. From the interesting lore to the complex relationships, I could not get enough of the way things were unfolding throughout. It’s a rich world, filled with great characters, and I am eager for more.

Without a doubt, I will be going to read more Iris Foxglove now.

Oh. My. Specifically Death God.

I had a miserable day at work today bc I blew through 85% of this one all last night and had to sneakily finish the rest at work today. Sometimes I feel starved for fantasy romance that delivers on sexiness or dark romance that actually knows the definition of the genre, but NEVER with Iris Foxglove. Once again, they have tricked me into reading the sexiest fantasy novel.

I won’t rehash anything you can’t read on the book jacket, but Nyx and Azaiah’s dark slow burn was delicious from the beginning. I was surprised how long the book was, but the worldbuilding charmed me as always, and when I realized which country’s history we were seeing the fall of, I literally squealed. Watching their relationship unfold so slowly and Azaiah’s deep longing for more was delicious - as a serial Warlock player in D&D, powerful immortal beings falling madly in love with “insignificant” humans is 10000% my thing. The desire, the longing, the power exchange (a tasty extra layer on top of the established D/s-verse), the dark covetous depths of this fucked up, sweet, dramatic relationship…it was all perfectly executed (and so were like SO MANY FOLKS, omg >:3c ) The ending was a sweet overlap with other established stories, and it was fascinating to see those pieces of the world through Nyx/Glaive/Azaiah/Death’s experiences.

If the other books are like this the Immortals series was written for ME and I’m about to have a VERY good time with the rest of it. Full review pending due to time/if I remember, but I HAD to get this down while it was fresh in my mind. A++++ EXTREMELY good dark juicy book.

I have to begin this review with my deep affection for and appreciation of Azaiah, a complete sweetheart, complex soul, and…also an avatar of Death. He has layers. And fascinating siblings (books pending, I hope). His relationship with Nyx is full of emotion (not just angst, but…angst for days) and formative events for both their relationship and the larger world they inhabit. He and Nyx broke my heart and put it back together several times. Their story isn’t easy: there’s lots of upheaval and evolution and pain and change on the way to the possibility of happiness. As you might expect from one character being a deity and the other a solider/prince, mythology and politics are both very much woven into the fabric of their experiences and the narrative as a whole. It is, on so many levels, a mesmerizing read. It’s also worth noting that while Azaiah and Nyx's story is the beginning of a new series it takes place in a well-developed world, and those familiar with other books in this universe will find new layers to significant events and a fascinating deepening of lore and and context (I know this vague, but spoilers are the worst, so…) Tl;dr: well worth a read.

Angst, pining, and more!

I loved this book SO MUCH! It hurt in all the right ways. I absolutely loved the growth of the main characters, which made their happily ever after all the better. I also lived the tie-ins with the other two series by the authors. I can't wait for the other books in this series.

As a young man, Azaiah was happy to become the sacrifice for his village’s well being. But The Harvester had different purpose in mind for Azaiah. He became death. Through the many years he served, Azaiah learned he would need a human companion to prevent his corruption. He deals with humans and must maintain some connection to humanity. A companion will help him do that. When he finds Nyx, he feels a connection and thinks he would make a perfect companion. Nyx feels the same attraction and is ready to commit when he is betrayed by his stepbrother and he falls into vengeance and swears allegiance to Ares, Azaiah’s brother. Azaiah wants to wait for Nyx but Nyx has lost himself and is now known as Glaive, a ruthless mercenary.

Storm Front is set in a world we have read before. In fact, there are references to the past series and maybe some deeper understandings to be had. Azaiah was amazing. As the god of death, he is also the bringer of storms. He kind, compassionate and caring. He wants to wait for Nyx but feels time is running out for him. Nyx had been a man filled with love and compassion but the betrayal changed all that and he is truly lost to vengeance. Maybe there is some hope when recent events seem to trigger his compassion, but it could be too little, too late.

Iris Foxglove has created another world within the world she already brought to life. This new series centers on gods finding their companion, preventing corruption. We met several gods, siblings to Azaiah. Stories for them are sure to be in our future. Hopefully, we will also see more of these two. An epic story of love and redemption, you do not want to miss this amazing story.

I’m giving this book 5 stars with the caveat that it is for existing fans of this world/author, and I don’t really see it as the first book in a series. I honestly don’t know if I would have understood what was going on in the second half if I hadn’t already read all this author’s other work.

However, within the canon it is excellent. Iris Foxglove has built an amazing world and then found a way to tell us about all of it through the ages. The characters here have been introduced elsewhere, and I loved learning their entire story.

My only criticism is a bit of the pacing; the first half is a pretty short time frame, and then there are huge skips. I’m not sure how this could have been handled better, because there was a lot of ground to cover, but it was a bit jarring as a reading experience. Regardless, I did enjoy every glimpse we got into the characters and world, even if I spent all my time begging for Nyx to get his shit together and see that the path forward wasn’t as difficult as he thought it was. His growth was important and in the end, worth it.

Pretty sweet read overall, but a little confusing for my ageing brain to keep up with. So many characters, and then so many of them changing names. I also found the cast of gods to be a little bleak: Death; War; Leviathan (Devastation? Destruction?); Desire corrupted into Avarice/Greed; and Art, corrupted into decay. Nothing really positive there, especially after the two who might be considered so underwent a negative change.

I do love both fantasy and romance, but I prefer my tales to be less convoluted and strenuous to follow. An arduous trek needs more adventure. LOTR, anyone?

A bit dragging at the end
Insta-love but somehow I still managed to finish it.
There is a long separation between the to MCs and only one of the MC sleep with others during this long separation. This really bothers me..I would think it’s only reasonable for both to do so single the separation took 800years…
3 stars for finishing it and enjoy until around 80%. Don’t think I would reread or read other stories of this series though.

4.5 / 5

Guys, I am warning you right now, don't read this book unless you want to be absolutely devastated and lose multiple nights of sleep over this.

Seriously.

The author(s) beautifully portrayed the passing of time throughout this novel, especially when Nyx was going through with his penance. There was such deep emphasis of how languages and games were forgotten, colonies built where they was nothing but inhospitable barren land before, and empires built on top of ones that had once been submerged under sand. The little snippets we got from other books in this universe only served to enhance this element.

Azaiah's innocence when he was sacrificed as a young man was such a poignant juxtaposition to Nyx when they first met, when he was grieving over his love. Battle-worn and worldly, Nyx and Death played a game that no one else remembers by the end of the book, and and despite Azaiah's innocence when he was sacrificed he had been Death for long enough that he did not hate him for it.

Theirs was a love that was forbidden for centuries, but in the end, it was worth it.

The authors did not shy away from portraying more horrific scenes, and the characters were written with such delicacy and care and they took my breath away. I loved the relationship between Azaiah and his siblings, and how he cared enough about them all that he was willing to sacrifice himself for them, even though they were not related by blood. There are so many things I loved about this book that I can't put in this review, but for sure this was one of the best books I have read the past few months.

In the end, it was the fact that Azaiah was perhaps the longest lasting avatar of Death cemented this book as one that I will never forget. Brilliantly written.

This book was something else. I saw a reel on instagram about this book and I had to read it. So glad I did it, it was remarkable. I only gave it 4.5 stars because I felt like something was missing, don't know what but yeah, it's how I felt. Azaiah was such a sweetheart, I loved him, the way he waited 800 years for Nyx, that's love. And it broke my heart when Nyx, drowning in grief chose War instead of Azaiah, it was really heartbreaking. And at the end, when Azaiah finally decided to give up, in some way I was relieved, the way he was carrying with the burden of his love of Nyx was too much. I was so glad when Nyx finally came back to himself and they at last could be together. I genuinely just loved their love, the way they fought for each other, their love never disapeared and never went away, it was always there

I finally** finished this after 2 weeks. (I didn't read while on the road and I've been exhausted since. Maybe some altitude related things)

This so beautifully intertwines not one, but all three of the series together through the Lord of Storms also know as Death. LoS appears in The Last Flight of Marius Chastain (Starian Cycle) causing a confusing but alluring ending. LoS appears again to a young Aleks who becomes one of Death's ferrymen in Summer of the Wanderer (Seasons of Lukoi).

Storm Front also explains a lot about the empires and people, their shared histories and how they are all connected. It was beautifully done. I will always suggest Iris Foxglove. I will suggest you read the other series before starting this one so you can fully appreciate how it was weaved together.

I feel like I cried on and off through the entire middle portion of this book. What a journey. This was long, heartbreaking, beautiful. Honestly, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Storm Front. I previously picked up another of the authors' books, which I ended up DNFing not too far in, so I didn't expect I'd be drawn into this story the way I was. The world building was so interesting and the emotions I got from the characters were so visceral. My only real issue was the length. To me, some of the content that drew this story out felt more like filler that mostly added unnecessary pain. For that, I'd give this a 4.5 rounded up to 5.

4.5 stars. As far as I’m concerned, this writing duo could get me to read anything, especially if it takes place in this universe. I thought this was great. It answered so many questions left hanging from the last two series. I loved Azaiah and Nyx. Their story was the perfect introduction to the gods, and a great reminder of the history of this world. You definitely need to read the other books to appreciate this one. But I am always so excited to step foot into this world again, so it’s not a hardship! I can’t wait for the rest of the books in this series!

Brilliant

This was just so unexpected in all the best ways. I was totally enthralled by the long and winding road that Azaiah and Nyx strode down through the ages, trying to find their way back to each other. It's an absolutely amazing series opener, and I can't wait to dive into the next book.

This author team is absolutely spectacular. Every book leaves me devastated and born anew and this book is the cherry on top.

World building is top notch and consistent. The intensity of the topic paired with soul-rending angst and presented in such beautiful story telling makes this a wholly unique read. Cannot recommend enough!

Emotional

This to me was incredibly emotional. The story of Azaiah and Nyx is one of the more profound soulmates like stories I have read. The love these two had was so internal by the end I was so teary. It was a bit long and not a quick read but written incredibly well. A good world building starter.

This book is the slowest roller coaster ever. Agonizing thrill. As someone who can't stand orgasm delay or denial, I'm refusing to give any stars to this book. Except this book is actually a really good book and deserves five stars if you love all the pining. I hate star ratings. They oversimplify whether you should read or not read a specific book.
