I’m not a gamer so I only have a very basic understanding of what’s going on in Star Trek Online. I might have appreciated these stories more if I were more involved with the game. They’re very like most of the post-DS9 Trek fiction. There’s a lot of conflict and a lot of going back to the well of alien species we’ve met before rather than strange new worlds.

A light and enjoyable holiday read given to me by my Dad for Christmas.

The stories are neither great literature nor great writing, but as they derive from mission plots of the video game Star Trek: Online, it is enjoyable escapism to dip the toe in the universe even though the overall sense is a bit disjointed and stilted were it read in another context.

There are visuals also derived from the video game that complement the stories. These effectively set the tone for the pieces pulled from magazines.

What's most fun is the tie-in nature of the plots and their callbacks to the many layers of Trek lore across multiple franchises. Many of the characters are younger and visibly attractive and so there is also a sense of remixing and refreshing the palate (and palette) of viewpoints and backgrounds.

The drama and nuance is lower than if this were fan fiction and the craft less polished than standalone tie-in novels, but the overall vibe is alone those lines, with the enduring spirit that infuses Star Trek remaining lit.

One observation about the nature of the procedural dialogue found here and in the limited options clickable in the choice trees of video game dialogue is how it models effective teamwork for mission-based problem solving within a structured hierarchy. I found myself relating to how professional and workplace communication and psychology does or does not match up with what the crew members here speak and experience. This is just an observation that says more about our contemporary culture than anything about the writing.
