Redeeming Productivity: Getting More Done for the Glory of God

Rate this book
Feeling overwhelmed and unproductive? The answer isn’t to do more.

What image forms in your mind when you think of productivity? An assembly line? Spreadsheets? Business suits or workplace uniforms? In the ancient world, productivity didn't conjure images like these. Instead, it referred to crop yield and fruit bearing. This agrarian imagery helps us understand productivity through a biblical lens. Jesus taught, By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit (John 15:8). Who doesn’t want to have a truly productive life—to bear much fruit? But how does this happen in the places we hold dear—the home, workplace, and in our communities?

We often feel overworked and overrun, defeated and discouraged. The world says be productive so that you can get all you can out of this life. The Bible says be productive so you can gain more of the next life. In Redeeming Productivity, author Reagan Rose explores how God’s glory is the purpose for which He planted us. And he shows how productivity must be firmly rooted in the gospel. Only through our connection to Christ—the True Vine—are we empowered to produce good fruit. This book shows how we can maintain the vitality of that connection through simple, life-giving disciplines. Readers will discover manageable applications like giving God the first fruits of our days. Additionally, Reagan discusses how our perspective on suffering is transformed as we see trials as God’s pruning for greater productivity.

Practically helpful. Already started implementing some of the tips discussed in this book that seem to bear fruit.

Productivity as stewardship is a great perspective. Rose did well to ground productivity in the Scriptures for the glory of God.

If you want to be more productive with what God has given you (not just do more things) then pick up this book for insight.

Also, this book had the best feeling paper I have ever held in a book lol

I would encourage every believer in Christ to read this small, but power-packed book. It gets to the heart of productivity while also giving a practical framework with which to carry out your day to day. It takes some of the helpful ideas from secular books, but also shows where they fall short in the light of eternity. Read it!! (And then put it into practice.)

I’m not into books on productivity, I have never willingly read a practical “self-help” book before, but this book already had my interest since Reagan Rose is a graduate of TMS and I’ve listened to his podcast a few times and follow him on Twitter. I also do want to better myself practically, I’m just not the type of person to read 10 books practical steps to having a more productive life. I wait around for people to show me the fruit of their labor. Reagan Rose certainly delivers by boiling down his research of (probably) hundreds of books and showing what he has found to be most helpful while also wedding it to a Biblical/Christian worldview. Any wisdom apart from the wisdom of God is foolishness, and Reagan Rose certainly brings the wisdom of God to the forefront of the issue. There are technically 10 chapters but because every two chapter are paired together (pillar/practice) it’s more like 5. Every pillar is essential to knowing why the practice is even worthy of our attention. This is the only book on productivity I know to suggest to people.

Redeeming Productivity: Getting More Done for the Glory of God by Reagan Rose

I normally stay away from books about productivity as they are very self focused, but this book got my interest as it is addresses the very reasons i stay away from books about this topic.

Redeeming Productivity is a helpful book that addresses the problems of our modern day productivity and self-improvement books.

Reagan Rose addresses how these productivity gurus can actually help people achieve their goals, but how they are also subtly teaching a theology and worldview that is contrary to a Biblical worldview.
Reagan does a great job of reminding fellow believers of where our reasons and focus should be, bring glory to God. He shows how Christians ought to be fruitful in our lives and what true productivity ought to look like. I loved how he empathizes that productivity should be faithful stewardship.

The author also has a lot of practical help for being a productive Christian. While I appreciated some of the helpful insights for being productive, not all of his methods are ones I found helpful at this season in my life ( currently a busy mom to a toddler and soon newborn baby). I more appreciated this book for the content on redeeming productivity and being faithful where we are at. Also, making sure our motivation isn't wrong and we are focused on bring God glory in our work and not ourselves. I appreciated this aspect of the book opposed to the more practical help on how to be more productive.

As a mother, you can sometimes not feel very productive in the daily mundane feeling tasks that never seem to end. I appreciate that this book addresses what true productivity in the Christian life should look like, being a faithful steward. Productivity in the Christian life looks a lot different than the world's version of it and the world will not think it productive. We ought to seek after pleasing God instead of man and bring glory to Him alone and growing in grace.

A delightfully practical read on stewardship, drawing heavily from the parable of the talents (Matt. 25) and the believer’s fruitfulness from abiding in Christ, the true vine (John 15).

Favorite quotes:

On tracking commitments
“Your mind, as for having ideas, not holding them.” -David Allen

“Often are creativity is blocked because were using all of our brain’s resources, trying to hold all of our commitments in our head.“

“When our ultimate name is the same of the Maker, we will steer clear of traps, like the love of money, vainglory, or corner cutting.”

“Faithful stewardship is about taking responsibility for all that the Lord has entrusted to us.”

Recomand!

“It is my happiness that I have served Him who never fails to reward His servants to the full extent of His promises.” (John Calvin)

Wow wow wow. This book is so unbelievably good. I’ve read a few different secular productivity books before, but those all presented a problematic (read: unbiblical) view of productivity…an endless rat race, no point to all the toil, empty of meaning, with goals rooted in entirely in selfishness. This book is the polar opposite of that—Reagan Rose succinctly explains what Christ-centered productivity looks like, the why behind it, and practical points and action items to live it out. Can’t recommend this book enough.

So well done. Rose is laser focused on productivity that honors God, rather than maximizing output. He pulls from a variety of productivity methods (GTD, Atomic Habits) in a very concise and simple to implement way. (I read GTD a while back and it's a bit of a slog.) It's a great mix of project planning and goal setting with the practical steps to help you move forward in those projects and goals while also attending to the business of life. All the while, God's glory is at the center. I'm grateful for such a biblical perspective on productivity.

A focus on God-honouring productivity. What that means as Christians and how we can apply practical principles in our everyday walk with God.

Highlights:
We belong to God and our purpose in life is to bring Him glory.
Practical effectiveness is never the true measure of a Christian’s productivity. God judges the content of our productivity. The how, why and what.
As we are transformed by Christ, there should be a natural progression from our internal character to external obedience to His commands. A byproduct of these two is practical effectiveness in our work.
When we consider maximum efficiency, we often don’t take into account varying energy levels, cycles of focus, mood, or a need for rest.
As God’s children, we have a clear purpose for our lives, we’ve been uniquely gifted to fulfil it. Seeking to be faithful in good works for the glory of our great God.
God not only calls us to be productive but supplies the power to do so.
If we want to lead fruitful lives, we need to focus on the root not the fruit.

This book went far beyond my expectations. As a very organized goal-setting person who thought Rose would be “preaching to the choir,” I ended up being so wrong. It brought me focus, sober reminders, and a rich immersion into what Scripture has to say about stewardship and productivity. The healthy dose of conviction was accompanied by encouragement and attainable suggestions. It is well-edited and each succinct chapter delivers its message clearly.

This short book would be beneficial for all Christians in all types of situations. I’m very comfortable recommending it!

Reagan Rose has written the clearest and most practical short guide to productivity that I have read. Reagan’s commitment to keep productivity in its rightful place as a key means of glorifying God by doing good works is a refreshing change to most books in this genre. As Reagan unfolds practical ways to organize your day for maximum productivity he reminds us that productivity is not the end goal. Pairing this book with Tim Challies’ “Do More Better” will prove to be a great help to anyone who is struggling to find focus in their work day.

Rock solid, and much more my speed after a previous productivity type book I read recently. Much simpler, much shorter, and grounded in the gospel and Biblical motivation. A lot to attempt to implement, and Rose provides "formulas" and very practical steps for each area. Plan to reference this one throughout the year.

The strength of this book is not in the 'how' but in the 'why'. Reagon Rose incisively exposes the hidden assumption of most productivity books, namely that the purpose of productivity is for personal/individual success or fulfilment. Instead, he gives a biblical perspective of productivity, especially how it is tied to stewardship of the time and gifts that God has given to every believer. This is a much needed corrective lens to the topic.

This book provides a thoughtful interaction with, synthesis and critique of mainstream productivity literature and offers a revolutionary, paradigm-shifting approach. With thoughtfulness and care, productivity is challenged and redeemed for the glory of God, the good of others, and your own wellbeing. Highly recommend this one!

SCORE
4 Star = I enjoyed reading this for the most part.

This is definitely not a book for the non-Christian. It's assumed that the reader is Christian.

As someone who is a very slow thinker due to disability and tends to hyperfocus on one thing that whole day, which makes me feels like I'm getting nothing done (I call it productive procrastination)... you don’t know how long I’ve been looking for biblical instruction on being productive that isn’t rooted in material "success."

SUMMARY

PROS & CONS
Pros:
- I found this extremely helpful and I took lots of notes.
- Great practical advice that's tied back to Scripture.
- He gets straight to the point.
- I liked how Reagan mentioned in chapter 3, when talking about his dad killing himself, how so much of our identity is wrapped up in our parent’s model for us and when you don’t have someone as a positive role model in your childhood years it can confuse you to go down the wrong path. For him, his role model was the Father to the fatherless.

Cons:
- For chapter 2, I’m not entirely convinced that you have to do everything in the POWER acronym in the morning, especially for those of us who have trouble going to sleep and staying asleep. Maybe you can do half (or more or less) of those things at night to be prepared for the morning. (Update: I tried going to bed earlier for some weeks cause I have morning shifts and always had trouble sleeping. I was already waking up 1-2 hrs earlier for my circadian rhythm in the morning so I had to double it to fit most letters of the POWER in there. It was like the "normal" sleep problems I have on 10 different kinds of steroids. I might do something like a POWER night routine I'll update later once I figure that out.)
- For chapter 6 on the 5 lists, like I’m someone who doesn’t like having a ton of lists because they're very overwhelming to me. Especially the way he explained it was a bit hard to follow along with. It's not in the book, but I found the Priority Matrix/Eisenhower Method quite helpful.
- Chapters 9 and 10 kind of confused me a bit based off all that was said earlier.

Not pro nor con:
- A few of the verses didn't fit the argument he was trying to make sometimes, though I think he might of just put the wrong chapter/verse by mistake. But he uses multiple verses usually and gets the point across pretty clearly.

CONCLUSION
I liked it for the most part honestly and found the Biblical insight mixed with the practical application extremely helpful and digestible. It's quite counterculture to how I was raised on what productivity, success, and purpose looks like in my family. I’d probably reread this again because it’s something that is not just useful this year, but even 10 years or more later.

Redeeming Productivity is an approachable, engaging guide to living a more purposeful and productive life. I like how it is organized – in 5 sections the author calls “Pillars of Christian Productivity,” explaining the origin, purpose, content, source, and motivation for productivity.

What I especially enjoy is that each pillar chapter is followed by a practice chapter, helping me to apply what I’ve learned. I really connected with the chapter on crafting my morning routine. The following sentence will continue to echo in my head long after reading the book:

“The simple choice of picking up your Bible before you pick up your phone in the morning is a cosmic act of defiance against your own sinful heart.”

This book helps me be more purposeful in life. I like that. Sometimes we get so caught up in the day to day that we don’t stop to listen, learn, and think about who gave us that day. And why.

First Line: Over the past ten years, I’ve gone deep down the self-help rabbit hole.

I appreciate the author outlining what he calls "Pillars of Christian Productivity." Reading through those "pillars" helped give a refocus on what truly matters in regards to productivity. The practices he outlines also seem helpful, but can seem overwhelming to someone like me who is new to the genre of "Productivity books."

The organizational structure of this book made my brain feel like I was doing mental ping-pong between ideas. I am sure the author had a reason for organizing the chapters the way he did, but I think it would have been helpful to be organized like "Part 1: The Pillars of Christian Productivity" and "Part 2: The Practices of Christian Productivity." That organization would have helped me see the connections between the "pillars" better than the way the book is written, alternating chapters of "pillars" and "practices."

There were also many comma splices in this book, which made it difficult to understand the ideas being communicated at some points.

Rose does a great job of giving both the why and how of productivity in the Christian life. Alternating between the why (what he calls pillars) and the how (practices), Rose gives a clear yet achievable way of stewarding your time and responsibilities in ways that glorifies the Lord and sets the Christians mind on eternal things by getting the day-to-day mundane done. Anyone in any current season of life will find this book challenging, insightful, and practical.

“That’s what redeeming productivity is all about — seeking to be faithful in good works for the glory of our great God. The Christian life is a long journey with much stumbling along the way, but the prize for faithfully and fruitfully stewarding your life will be worth the best of your productive efforts. Don’t give up.” - Rose (p. 150)

Incredible accessible book that draws upon theological foundations to filter secular wisdom for productivity. By having chapter pairings of theological reflection with practical productivity guides reinforces this concept.

My only critique is an emphasis on heavenly reward as the motivation for productive lives under God. I am not sure if the idea of being rewarded in heaven is the strongest motivation given in scripture for living productive kingdom lives. I think love, freedom, and honoring God as our Lord are stronger and more consistent morivations in scripture. I can’t see how being motivated by rewards in heaven doesn’t turn into self orientated productivity. I may have missed his logic here.

Other than that a wonderful easy read. Accessible to for anybody. Draws our eyes to living productive lives for the Lord, not just for our sense of success/idealism/hope of controlled life. Would recommend.

Difficult one to rate! Really enjoyed lots of this and there are things that I plan on putting into practice. Love how Reagan Rose “redeems productivity” and from a theological perspective I certainly think he does that which I’m grateful for. I found some of the practical application less helpful. For example, when he talks about managing tasks he seems to include life admin tasks within his work week. I’m sure lots of people like myself have 9-5 jobs that don’t dovetail nicely with life admin, whereas self-employed people might find that kind of advice more helpful. Overall I continue to enjoy receiving Reagan Rose’s weekly newsletters and podcasts he’s been on and would probably point other people in that direction. People who are unfamiliar with his work would I’m sure take a lot from this book.

I’ve read a handful of productivity books in the past year, and this was my favorite by far. Rose has done his homework, and brings many of the best insights of the modern productivity movement together in a succinct and readable volume. His Christian faith gives him a way to discuss purpose in a deeper way than typical productivity books. His writing is clear, his structure is easy to follow, and his tone is both gracious and appropriately challenging. A strong recommendation for others, and a book I will definitely revisit in the future.

Really well-written, biblically-grounded book on how to be productive to the glory of God. Rose compares gospel-centered versus secular (self-help) motivations for productivity and offers practical tips for living a more productive life.

Now the hard part is actually implementing everything, but that doesn't take away from the quality of the book itself... :')
