Bestselling author Colm O’Regan is a worrier. A professional one. Caution is his watchword. Risk aversion is his love language. Now Colm is grappling with the biggest worry of the whole ‘planet being on fire’ thing and how exactly we can help. Don’t worry, this isn’t a book telling you how to live off the grid and make your own planet-friendly soap from woodlice (that’s the sequel). Instead, Climate Worrier is about the journey, about trying (and often failing) to be part of the solution to the big issues, while not despairing at the endless hypocrisies that come from also being part of the problem. It’s about trying to be become the greenest version of yourself; about joining the ranks of those who give a shit and do a bit. So if you’ve fretted - using your diesel car to get closer to nature, - eating your ethical food off a plastic plate, - existing and have a general feeling we’re all doing too little, too late, Climate Worrier is the book for you.
I recommend the audiobook version. Not only because it’s the most environmentally friendly option but also because the author reads it himself and made me laugh out loud many times.
3.9 out of 5. It’s refreshing to read a book that addresses climate action with a sense of humour. The humour is primarily self-deprecating and Colm O’Regan recognises that he is imperfect in the ways he is addressing climate change. A few laugh out loud moments. I probably enjoyed it more because the author is of my generation, has kids, does some litter-picking, and is struggling with reducing meat intake - so it was very relatable. The book seemed to be written in a hurry - or maybe that is the stream-of-consciousness style? I would highly recommend the list of further reading at the end (or the Big Books of non-Colm) which added quite a few to my TBR list!
I picked this up on Borrow Box just because I had to pick an audiobook quickly before beginning my journey to work. My expectations were fairly low but in my head I was just thinking I'll support any aspiring irish author in any field. I was not expecting to find this quite as interesting and insightful as it actually was. It does take a bit for the listener (or reader I guess) to get used to Colm's comedic style but even then he's constantly pointing out interesting factoids about the climate crisis whilst also addressing his own struggles to be someone who makes a positive impact into the world with regards to this crisis. There's so many different aspects of his daily struggles that might make you think "What's the point?", but overall his message is to just keep trying and that's better than doing nothing. A really fun read that will definitely inspire you to do a little bit more for the world even if it's coated in explaining the gross hypocrisy of many aspects of modern society.
Colm O'Regan's book is humorous but thought provoking. I liked the way it was pretty even handed and didn't enter the 'blame game' when it came to climate change. His suggestions as to the informed choices we, as individuals, can make and how they influence our daily lives was interesting.
Listened to audio book and love love loved this book! Laughed out loud in parts, in others found myself reflecting on my behaviours. His descriptions of the confusion, the guilt, the blame and excuses we all experience when trying to be better for the planet resonated with me!!
