General Relativity – By Benjamin Crowell

Benjamin Crowell received his Ph.D. in Physics from Yale University and works at a Community College but has added to science in the writing of this Open Access textbook on General Relativity. The mathematics involved becomes gradually advanced and the topic area covered in the book are explore in detail and are understandable. The text begins with the Geometrical Theory of Spacetime where it discusses the nature of time and causality. It describes Muons and Gravitational red-shift. On the geometry of a flat spacetime Crowell describes the relativistic properties of Lorentz geometry. The Lorentz geometry was describe with experiments in a vacuum for the dispersion of light and the velocity of light. The text presents a Lorentz violation of the gravitation.
The text continues into differential geometry where it discusses vectors and curved spacetime. Next it looks at metrics, particularly the Euclidean metric and the Lorentz metric. From this it looks at Tensors, Lorentz scalars and vectors of four dimensions. It described velocity, acceleration and momentum in four-vectors. Also it touches on electric, magnetic field and electromagnetic potential in four-vectors. The book discusses the Conservation laws, curvature and the stress-energy tensor. The curvature in two dimensions, Torsion, geodetic equations, metric curvature and manifold was discussed. The text explores Vacuum Solutions for the event horizon and the black hole. Symmetries and the Killing vectors were discussed. The contributions of Penrose and Schwarzschild were outlined. Lastly Big Bang and gravitational waves end the text. An appendix contains excerpts of the three papers of Albert Einstein which laid the foundation of Modern Physics, particularly General and Special Relativity.
