I’m TR Cameron, science fiction author. I’ve been an avid consumer of the genre since I was six, I think, when I broke the seal on my Dad’s copies of the Asimov Foundation books. It’s been all downhill since then.

I have a day job that I love most days, and writing is pretty much my only consistent hobby. When I find time that’s not already filled with my wife, my daughter, my writing, my work, or dodging the affections of our clowder of cats, you can find me playing video games (currently Dishonored 2 – I’m a little behind the times on this one), watching things (Marvel movies, American Gods, Agents of Shield, Justified, The Expanse, Gotham), playing board games, or, naturally, reading.

My favorite authors in Sci-Fi are David Weber, Jean Johnson, John Scalzi, CJ Cherryh, and the giants: Asimov, Pohl, Bear, Heinlein, etc. I read a lot in other genres too, and am a big fan of Matthew Woodring Stover, Michael Anderle, Jim Butcher, and I could go on and on and on. If I had to choose one favorite, though, it would be Stephen R. Donaldson, whose Thomas Covenant series was transformative for me.

Probably my pie-in-the-sky dream for my writing career is that someone would make a movie or television show of my books and I could be a part of the production. Sure, unlikely, but a clowder-dodger can dream, right? My more practical dream is that I can keep writing and both entertaining and connecting with my readers for years and years to come.

Witch With a Badge is book one in the Witch Warrior series by T.R. Cameron.

I had high hopes on falling in like with this urban fantasy series. It’s got lots of things I like to read in my fantasy novels; magic, dragons, and mystery, but I ended up DNF'ing.

I felt like the story was all over the place. Too many characters, too much information that drags, and too much skipping around and going from one place to another. The story just kept going and I was like will anything wrap up. I felt like the author had no idea where they where going. No focus.

As for the characters I wasn’t connecting to them. Our lead Cait she’s cool and perfect. She’s got amazing powers, gain's more special skills, can fight, teleports, has a family of magical people and an unspoken destiny. Really were are her flaws. A character needs to have some flaws, be humble and earn their reward. She’s just to perfect.

Witch With a Badge I really tried, but it wasn’t the book for me. If the blurb intrigues you, I urge you to give it a shot. Just because it did not work for me does not mean it won’t for you.

This is a review of books 1 (Witch With a Badge) and 2 (Witch With a Grudge) in the Witch Warrior series. For once waiting until I had read the second book was not me being lazy but quite deliberate. For quite a few series that I have tried out lately I have found the first book interesting enough but then it went down the drain in the second book. So this time I waited until I had read the first two book before making a review. I guess now I have to hope that the author(s) do not screw it with the third book.

I was a bit hesitant since it is claimed that T.R. Cameron co-authored it with Martha Carr who has been mostly miss for me lately and is really on my do-not-read list. Since T.R. Cameron was mentioned first, but mostly because I liked the idea of a witch being a Marshal, I decided to test my luck anyway. Oh, and Michael Anderle has stuck his name on it as well but, as is often the case, I don’t think he has written a single word of the actual content.

So far this series has been a decent enough urban fantasy story. As I wrote I like the idea of a witch being a Marshal. There are way too many stories out there where the main protagonist are spending most of the books hiding or even being at odds with law enforcement the latter usually being incompetent and politically corrupt.

Cait is quite likable. She is quite competent, somewhat snarky of course and she has a dragon who is equally snarky and thinks that every problem can be solved by liberal application of dragonfire. I quite like the combo. It doesn’t hurt that Cait’s law enforcement friends are also both competent and likable of course.

There are really two stories going on here. One is Cait the Marshal solving cases with her colleagues and the other is Cait the witch coven member back home who, as it turns out in the second book, have a wee bit of a infestation problem, the furry and toothy kind. Normally I am not to found of these double stories but, so far, it worked pretty well in these books.

One thing I am not too thrilled about though are these technomage witches or infomancers who combines magic and modern technology. They are the informatics researchers and spy specialists of the Marshal service which is fine. However, when they do their stuff oftentimes they submerge themselves in some virtual reality where they sometimes meet their opponents and duke it out. It does not make sense neither from a informatics point of view nor from a magic point of view. It is just weird and I do not really like it very much.

Apart from that the books are not bad. They are no masterpieces really but solid urban fantasy books and, so far, refreshingly free from woke preaching or unnecessary romance/urban porn episodes. There’s plenty of action intermingled with detective work and family banter (both between Cait and her Marshal “family” and her real family). They are good books to read when watching TV at the same time, which I do most of the time.

I think I will have a go at the third book, due out by the end of the month.

This was a free read from Prime Reading. There were a lot of things that didn't work for me. I loved the dragon. Aza is pretty cool. Not enough to continue the series. Also, the primary mystery (who killed the judge?) wasn't solved - it's a cliff hanger. My least favorite ending ever.

There were a lot of moving parts that felt like it should have led to more than it did. I'm sure everything in this book will be necessary for the rest of the series but for this book it just felt like the author's had a bunch of ideas and didn't know what to focus on.

This book was neither bad or all that good. I had to persevere to finish as I kind of found it just boring.

Oh wow, this book flew. Like, seriously, it was lightning fast—almost too fast. I really wanted to enjoy it, but I just couldn’t settle into the story. There was a lot going on, and while I love magic and urban fantasy, I found myself struggling to connect with the characters. It felt like something was missing—maybe deeper character development or moments to breathe between all the action?

The world had potential, and there were some detailed bits that stood out, but overall, the pace made my head spin. I found myself wishing for more depth rather than just nonstop movement.

Unfortunately, this just wasn’t the book for me, and I won’t be continuing the series.

Great heroin & her dragon is hilarious & adorable!

I think Cait's dragon sidekick is the best. Aza is adorable as he has to learn all about the world Cait operates in. Cait is a complex character. She's a witch that is a U.S. Marshal. She is also a part of a Special Forces team for the Marshals. She portals home & after passing 3 hard tasks is given Aza to help protect her. Then she learns she will be given another wand. Oh, and her family will become the leaders of the coven. Her family lives in Ireland with a coven of witches. Thank goodness she has the ability to sleep a few hours at home & it restores her for like weeks of barley getting any sleep. I would love to have Aza. It's pretty clever that he can shrink down to the size of a necklace & go with her everywhere. And every other time he's the size of a German Shepherd. Although sleeping becomes a problem when they are both fighting to get comfortable. Lol! I also love his ability to change the color of his scales to blend in with his surroundings. And Cait's new co-workers are sarcastic & fun. I especially love the infomancer which I had never heard of this type of magical before. I am a huge fan of her. I love that her character is uncomfortable in social settings but confident when she is using her abilities!

(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring.)

First time read the author's work?: Yes

Will you be reading more?: Yes

Would you recommend?: Yes

------------
How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author)
4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author).
3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series)
or
3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)

All of the above scores means I would recommend them!
-
2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.)
1* = Disliked

Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)

Too many cooks

I don’t even know where to begin. The lack of background. Too many characters. Too much dialogue that skips everywhere. No meat. No heart. By the end you are just grateful it’s over. Books written by comity never turn out well. But this book is horrible.

She didn’t even question why she was given a dragon. I know it’s fantasy, but at least explain the plot and the reason for her new side kick. Lazy. Or if it did and I missed it, it’s because my eyes glazed over and I stopped truely reading it.

Oh, I LOVED this book!

Being of Irish descent, I thoroughly enjoyed that small taste of Ireland, and totally approved of the Keane women's sassiness - in a family of 7 headstrong girls, that's MY kind of people! Lol

I thoroughly enjoyed learning about Cait. Both her work as a US Marshal, which was much more varied than I'd expected, but also her life in a family of Magicals.

Did I mention that I LOVE Dragons? Lol

Aza has a wonderful, cheeky, personality, and I'm really looking forward to learning more about this unusual partnership - and what hardships they may be facing any day soon!

This was a totally absorbing first book, with wonderful characters, and a nicely varied plotline, and I'm definitely ready to start reading Book Two of this new series: "Witch With A Grudge".

Unfortunately, I won't be starting it straight away, as I'm definitely past my usual bedtime, so I'll catch up with some sleep first, before starting it - as hard as that's going to be, to wait! Lol

I keep saying that I'm really spoiled as a reader, because it's so true nowadays. I have a great selection of funny, furious, amazing books to read, written by authors who are totally excellent at their craft.

Yet, as much as I've loved all of T R Cameron's books, so far, this new, to me, series is yet another step up from his previous ones - and they were, ALL of them, excellent.

It looks like I'm going to be having some great fun reading about Cait and Aza, plus all the people they surround themselves with.

So, I'll just finish this review: "I REALLY love Dragons, people!", then, once I've slept, I'll start on the next book in this highly entertaining series, so far then once I'm done, I'll catch you on the flip side, and let you know what I thought about it!

It was alright.
The best bit was Aza, hands down
The story wasn't bad, but it didn't exactly flow either.
It felt quite disjointed more like several separate stories - Marshals, coven, SOG, poor lonesome cowboy vigilante.. not a fan of vigilantes, even less so when they're actual Law Enforcement themselves
Minimal world building, character development, backstory
The case they're supposedly working on was half forgotten for good chunks of the book
I remember at one point wondering when the story was gonna begin, you know, kick off for real only to realize I was already at 73% or sth
Shortly after it all starts resolving itself without any real rhyme or reason to it.
And then her meeting with Rosetta at the end, was like wait what?!? when did you come to that conclusion and how come it was suddenly all about her?!? made no sense
All in all a bit of hatchet job, too many cooks trying to tick too many boxes at once while not really succeeding at any of them
might pick up the next one to see how this plays out a bit more, but honestly I'm not committed.

Good

Cait Keane is a witch, who has just transferred to the Boston Marshal’s office. Immediately she’s heading out on a case, and it’s not long before her magical secret is out and she’s working on the death of a judge.
Back home with her coven in Ireland, things are changing too- and somehow Cait ends up with a dragon partner!

This is a fantastically fast paced read, with engaging characters and interesting setting. It’s part of the Oriceran universe, shared by several authors, but doesn’t seem to require a previous knowledge of the other books set there.
Cait is a likeable character, though I admit I wonder just how she is going to get all that extra practice she apparently needs, and her new dragon companion is intriguing to say the least.
It did end on a bit of a book hook, with some slightly unfinished business for Cait and her coworkers, but nothing that can truly be called a cliffhanger.
All in all this was a lovely, quick to read, urban fantasy, and I’ll definitely look for more.

Cait is a witch who works for the US Marshall service and has just transferred to the Boston office. Her new job starts immediately having to go after a fugitive where her magic is needed.
The second day starts with the murder of a judge that has magical causes.
This book starts with a good crime mystery but gets better.
Cait also portals back to her coven in Ireland where she is given a quest by a ghost fox. This interesting adventure leaves Cait with a young dragon bonded to her.
There are a great bunch of additional characters in this book. The infomancer, Sabrina, who treats hacking computers like a Mission Impossible/Entrapment adventure complete with lasers to manipulate around. She also dresses as Catwoman. There is also Aza, her dragon, who wants to shoot fire at anything or anybody. He has the ability to change size and shape, usually disguised as a necklace.
This book has action, mystery, surprises and humour.
It’s a fairly easy read, there may be violence at spots but nothing gruesome.

Witch with a Badge tells the story of Cait Keane who has recently transferred to the Marshals. Right from the start there's a lot happening. She's immediately pulled into the field with her new team. It kinda works to her benefit b/c while in the field, she uses her magic in a way to saves a team member. While on her last job she kept her magic secret, so the acceptance of her and her magic is a nice change.

There were many things about this intro I liked, but sadly, it wasn't at all what I was in the mood to read. I'd chosen it for a challenge, so I stuck with it. At any other time, I would've stopped reading and possibly returned to it when I was in the mood for dry UF. Some of the magic was very impressive, especially portaling, which I would LOVE to have at-hand. Some things, like the addition of her dragon sidekick, while adorable and another would-LOVE-to-have, didn't get much explanation.

I'm not sure if I'll return to the series or not, but with the series being available on KU I might.

decent book

An interesting new book in the world of Omnicron. A likable lead surrounded by interesting family and friends. The story line is good, in the sense that the story ends satisfyingly but leaves enough for more in further books. There are some downsides to the story though, mainly in story threads that are mentioned but never referred to again, probably for future books, but that’s annoying as they had nothing to do with this book and took up a chapter or three but ended nowhere. Family story disappeared, special unit work disappeared, weird prophecy of sorts disappeared. If you ditched them you would have half a book left so that was disappointing. I’ll read the next but the lead must be a workaholic with all these side gigs.

I was almost 80% in when I went back and looked, really looked at the book details.
I realized there were 3 authors and that kind of made sense with the idea that there felt like 3 stories going on. The cover didn't really list the other two authors as prominently.

I am not sure if this is a spin off from another series but I didn't really understand the world. There was a lot of talking about AI bots but also I am confused about the place magic occupied in the world. Its out in the open but she still had to hide it?

I couldn't keep anyone she worked with straight. It's all the way on the last page that I realized Simon and Chief Levitt are the same person. I read and finished the book but I really wish they had tightened the writing more. I won't continue with the series

Its a good book. But it has some truly awful opinions represented.

Basics of the book are interesting. Unfortunately the authors seem to believe that law enforcement is above the law and that everyone that is not law enforcement is a criminal and has no rights. And the lawyers that represent them are apparently dirt. Crazy to read a work of fiction, but i am still able to recognize the arrogance of law enforcement. Don’t know whether to be impressed at the ability of the authors to give a believable representation of the what law enforcement believes. Or to be scared that the authors really believe this is the way law officers should think and behave. Or maybe i am just reading to much. 😁🧐

Meh. Concept is good, execution is extremely average and kinda messy. It's fine, but there is too much going on. It reads like a series of unrelated short stories rather than a solid novel. There's a whole sci-fi aspect thrown in that isn't really explained well and feels like it was added so that the author could pretend he was writing sci-fi instead of urban fantasy.

The audio narrator is good BUT why is our female lead Irish born and bred, spends her weekends back home with a family who all speak with Irish accents, AND SPEAKS WITH AN AMERICAN ACCENT? Why is the Irish spirit animal in Ireland speaking with a British accent?

I might read more because it wasn't terrible, but I also might just forget that I ever read it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Big problem with the story. There are three major areas of the MC's life; Marshal, Witch Coven, and Special Ops Group. While it is possible to have all three together, the author is NOT good at weaving them together. The transitions between them are rough.

The marshal persona is a tad bit unorthodox to the point of not really believing the rules are for her. That is always a potential issue...

There are a few subplots running around as well. Those subplots don't weave together well either...

This book is okay, but not very good. The characters are interesting but not particularly well written.

Meh

It was a passable read, but moved too slowly to really draw me in. Despite getting hints at potential world building, I never felt I fully got what the world was like. It seemed like magic users were rare, but then infomancers seemed commonplace, if the single chapter from Sabrina's POV (also a sign of poor writing) is any indication. There's a whole magical planet but I don't understand it's significance. The list of underdeveloped world elements could go on for ages.
So, while I got a few weak chuckles and some entertainment from the book, I'm not especially driven to read more of the series or by these authors.

Extraordinary

This first in the series starts with a bang and doesn't let up throughout the entire book, not only is our heroine a witch with kick-ass magic after passing a spirit trial in her home in Ireland she now has a Dragon as a sidekick/Familiar yes you read that right a for real dragon. Moving to Boston to join a new team she's immediately launched into nonstop action when a judge is assassinated, but everything is not as it seems as the two main rival gangs try to blame the other. Great characters brilliant storyline magic mayhem and murder what more could you ask for, can't wait to read book two, Baz.

Cait and her Dragon

First time reading these authors, the storyline was interesting not totally original but somewhat is, her partner is not a love interest, it's a Dragon (who is not a shifter well not in book one) her Scooby gang is marshals so are trained to help.we only get a little of them and her family is fun and you can see she is going to need to be in two places at once in the future.I am a romantic so I hope there will be a love interest (hopefully not rose of Dragon gang)
Very action packed with magic so far no other supernatural (apart from our Dragon who can change size,I guess he is like a familiar at the moment)

Wasn’t sure what to expect…

I read this book because of this author’s connection to Shayne Silvers. I really didn’t know much about Cameron’s writing style independently of Silvers, and this book isn’t what I expected. There was a lot of slowness in this book, it ended abruptly and without any motivation to read Book 2. The transitions were disorienting at times, the storyline didn’t flow well, and there was a lot of detail in unnecessary parts of the book and a definitive lapse in others. I really hope this book is typical of a first book for a new author and subsequent books will get better.

Decent

There was a glitch where one or more pages turned, starting at the beginning and continued every 3 or so chapters through out the book. All the pieces of a really good book are here in this book. But I think the lack of much of a plot leaves a lot to be desired. There just isn't much. There may or may not be a syndicate. A judge was murdered, they caught him. That's about it. The tease lines that were thrown out did not go anywhere and not sure if they are building. I do like the Ireland subplot. But again not A lot to it.

3 stars = I liked it for the most part. There was an awful lot of set up. The main character has three separate areas of her life - work as a magical us Marshall, her witchy clan home in Ireland, and her special ops group that seems like it's sort of the 'Reserves' (4 if you count that part with her new dragon pal). It was kind of too much and meant that really not a whole lot happens in this first book. I'd probably give the next one a try if it were KU or if it goes on sale, the MC has potential and I liked her dragon friend.

I thought this book was terrible and it did not hold my interest very well at all. I found it very difficult to finish this book because I thought it was so bad. It reminded me of the matrix, Spider-Man, and wolverine all rolled into one. I didn’t feel like this book really had in the life of its own. It seem like the author took information from these other characters, like Spider-Man Wolverine and the matrix changed names and put a little bit more of a story to them and called it a book. I will definitely not be reading any more of this series.

interesting writing style

3.5

It was pretty good. Slow, and things didn’t pick up until we’ll after half of the book had passed. I did like the mention of dragons, it was one of the only things that really excited me. The other was the “other dimension” where Cait and her people lived and gathered. I enjoyed the family ties. I like her line of work. But seriously, the beginning read kinda slow despite there being a big case right off the bat. Not sure why.

The writing could get some getting used to, I think. But I liked being here.

, Slow book, world building with a Lotta investigatory action.

This is more of a slice of life, investigatory book, at least this first one seems to be that way. A couple of action scenes in the beginning and throughout the book but all in all the book is slow paced. Likable characters, but we’ll have to see how the series progresses. Do not know if this is a weak to strong story as far as the protagonist is concerned, or more of how developing a relationship with her dragon. Book was interesting. Will go on and read the next one.
