Clear and comprehensive guide to depression & recovery.
This book does a great job of explaining depression (in its various forms), in clear (nontechnical-humanistic) terms.
This book also does a great job of explaining the benefits, limitations and downsides of medication alone. And the importance of combining medication with psychotherapy and self-care (good sleep, regular exercise, healthy diet).
Well, I suppose the proof is in the pudding for how a reader is able to effect changes...
However, on first blush, I think this is well done and is a better synthesis of some of the concepts than can be found in many other books on the market. I think an important distinction is that book isn't necessarily pure self-help: it posits that understanding the origins and the concepts underpinning depression and some forms of depression treatment is important to effecting change.
I appreciated that O'Connor was self-effacing and seemed to thoroughly revise the updated version of the text. His discussion of SSRI's and other medications, in light of recent developments, also felt very realistic and fair.
Fantastic read for depressives, psychotherapists, or those who know and love someone struggling with depression. I really enjoyed the case studies presented throughout the book and the tools - especially the mood journal. I learned a lot about different antidepressants and anti anxiety meds - the good, the bad, and the ugly truth! Overall I found this book very informative and helpful. I’ll definitely be returning to it to try the different tools!
I'll be adding the physical book to my library because this is a book that can be referred to again and again over different times of our lives and have new ways of viewing or gaining information from. If something doesn't work for you now it might work for you later and even now might give you the sense of, why couldn't I have found this information sooner.
