Eh, whatever, I feel this arc has improved a wee bit, at least for this volume (I know it will shit itself next volume, so I can't even bother crossing my fingers...). The key, I think, was when I was reading the Son Goku versus Granolah fight and they were flying through trees, and I thought to myself how few trees there were in canon Z, but how many there were in the non-canon '90s movies. And I realized: Granolah the Survivor could actually make for a decent little movie, if Toei still did that. I mean, it won't work now, when movies are a chance for Toriyama himself to advance the story, but if we were still shitting out the yearly direct-to-VHS forty-minute flick, this could be alright. Things like the Tullece, Juusan-gou, and Bojack movies usually just play around with slices-of-life comedy for five or ten minutes before the bad guys are introduced and everyone takes turns fighting the sub-bosses before the Big Bad shows up. I could easily imagine a movie with Granolah targeting Vegeta and Goku and fighting for like fifteen minutes while the Heeters do shit in the background, before Gas takes center stage in the back half.
Ultra Ego looks silly, but I think I can dig the basic concept; Vegeta gets stronger by tanking attacks, which is something like an update on how Zenkai boosts used to work. Here, Vegeta need not waste time recovering from fatal wounds, and instead immediately reaps the benefits upon taking damage. And I guess it's cute that Vegeta is a more traditional "tank" whereas Goku's Ultra Instinct makes him a "dodge-tank."
I guess it's also kind of cool the manga allows for the cast to do new techniques. I forgot what Goku did in his fight against Granolah that impressed me, but I do remember Vegeta doing a Freeza-like "Death Ball"-type technique.
Mixed feelings on Goku using UI with Blue. It makes sense, kind of, but undermines the UI transformation, in part because the silver form is explicitly named as Perfected Ultra Instinct. So, I guess -Sign- is what happens when Goku starts UI in base form, then SSG and SSB don't look different when UI is active, and it's harder to focus on a SS transformation with UI, but Goku can focus on pure UI and activate the silver form? Kinda just makes PUI feel like Super Saiyajin 6 or something. (I think I said that before...?)
