‘This treasure’ll make us richer than any Goldstone. All the sky pirates in Estoria, Val Sharis, heck, in all of Linaria would be on their way here if they knew where here was.’
With rampaging dragons and marauding Arillians dominating Linaria’s skies, Amarah’s quest for vengeance against the one who took everything from her seems almost impossible.
When a treasure hunt with a former ally leads to the discovery of a lost Varkain artefact, she’s plunged into the middle of an ancient war between Sevastos dragons, Varkain blood magic, and those who crave these powers for themselves.
Amarah wanted revenge. What she uncovers will change the face of Linaria forever.
Return to a realm in turmoil in the World of Linaria - Book Three.
Hello fellow book dragon! Thank you for visiting my author page. :)
My name is Lauren, I'm a fantasy author of character-driven stories and epic adventure. My books usually contain dragons, rarely feature romance, and are typically fun and hopeful.
I have a degree in Psychology and a fascination with MBTI (I'm an INFJ!). I'm a petrol head and thalassophile, and adore castles, sunshine, and dragons. I've always lost myself in fantasy worlds, and it's been an incredible achievement to publish my own.
If you send a friend request and we don't have any similar interests or books in common, I'll probably decline. Feel free to follow me, though.

This book starring my favorite character from the awesome Moroda novel was just released today, and I'm so excited, I've already purchased a copy! I can't wait to dive back into L.L. McNeil's brilliant world of Linaria! :D
I received an ARC from the author, and this is my honest review.
LOOK AT THAT COVER!
I bought all three books in the series, and my other half bought both available audiobooks, and she doesn't even read fantasy. My other half using a credit to buy fantasy instead of hard SF is possibly the biggest compliment L.L. McNeil could get.
4.5 Stars. Mostly because I am just one stingy and tight-fisted person when it comes to giving five stars, but that's a different story and tells you more about my penchant for perfectionism than anything else.
This book is superb.
As usual, my review will contain no spoilers.
The World of Linaria is an epic fantasy series with dragons, and who doesn't love dragons? (Uhm, so, you'll laugh, but I'm not the biggest dragon lover, however, I do love McNeil's dragons. They're cool.)
The series has several kick-ass female protagonists, of which Amarah is the one who kicks ass the most.
McNeil writes with a pleasing, straight-forward prose, making the fantasy genre accessible even to people who are not used to sprawling epics with a cast list that is longer than a Dickens novel. In fact, it speaks of McNeil's skill that her world building is creative, intricate, clearly the result of a vast imagination, yet so straightforward that it's perfect for someone who usually shies away from the sheer complexitiy of some of the books out there.
One of L.L. McNeil's many skills is to drip information into descriptions and conversation, and never dump it all on the reader at once.
While the first book, Moroda, is about a young woman who sets out to save her world, Linaria, from a war, Palom and now Amarah dive deeper into the world, lore and characters.
The characters are the series' main strength. They all feel authentic with interesting pasts and promising futures.
While Palom felt a bit slower than Moroda, Amarah is where it all kicks off, and while Isa slowly morphed into my favourite character throughout the second book, it's Morgen whose point of view
I particularly enjoyed in this third book.
Moroda starts off with the typical quest of a young woman who needs to save the world; Palom deals with the fallout of war, diving into the heartbreaking themes of depression and PTSD; Amarah, on the other hand, deals with who we are and how we can be the best version of ourselves.
Amarah's childhood has marked her and turned her into a character who is opportunistic, yet kind with an inherent sense of fairness. She's running from her past, but at the same time her past defines who she is.
For now.
All of them - absolutely all of them - Palom, Morgen, Isa, Amarah, Kohl - they all fight to be better, to improve and to bring peace to this world. They're not always sure how to do it. They doubt themselves. They fight their inner demons. They fail. But they're all trying their best.
And that hopeful note, that we can all be better, is what makes this book such an uplifting read.
I would recommend The World of Linaria to anyone who is looking for a new twist in epic fantasy with a character driven plot and dragons - especially to anyone who loves sky-pirates and airships.
Like I said before: McNeil's World of Linaria is a great introduction to fantasy for new fans, but also a treat for old fans of the genre.
And now, I've got but one question: when can I read the fourth book?
Amarah is the third book in L.L McNeil's 'World of Linaria', a high fantasy series with expansive world-building that involves, war, politics, magic, and DRAGONS.
Where book one focussed on introducing the world and characters, and book two on fleshing out those characters and the politics of the story, book three is much more action-packed and plot-driven. Saying too much about this plot of this book would spoil, given it's the third book in the series, but you can read my review of book one Moroda instead if you would like.
Because I love character-driven stories so much, I think I lean a little toward Palom as my favourite sequel in this series. However, I still really enjoyed this and flew through it. Amarah is one of my favourite characters in this series, so following her perspective was great. I also loved the heist elements in this sequel.
McNeil's writing style brings action sequences to life, and I loved how many parts of this book read like a movie playing out in my head. So many of the scenes really pack a punch, especially as we near the end of the book. I also thought many of the politics and pieces started to come together in a way that really excites me for the next books.
Another highlight for me was the politics. I love political fantasy so the focus on different relations between different groups and how this affects the characters, especially Sapora running the court as the king, was really interesting.
I think my only real criticism with this book is I felt some POVs were much stronger than others. There were certain characters, like Morgern, whose storylines did not really interest me. But honestly, every time I read a multi-POV book it's bound to happen I care for certain POVs more than others, so it's not really a big deal.
The next book focusses on Isa, and I cannot wait. She had probably my favourite arc in this book. I really enjoyed the way the politics plays out and the tension she has to navigate in her role as the King's sister. Overall, Amarah was a fast-paced, high action sequel that really delivers in spades.
Amarah is the third book in L.L. McNeil’s World of Linaria series, and to understand it you need to read the prior books. As each book in the series is getting stronger, I highly recommend going back to book one and diving in.
Since book one Amarah has been my favourite character, and knowing this book would result in a huge jump for her character arc had me super eager to dive in. As much as I loved watching Amarah grow, she’s not the only character to develop in this book.
A lot happens. To everyone. There are so many storylines moving forward in this one – some more than others – and each will have you hooked. The good, the bad, and the morally grey all progress a huge amount in this one, with plenty of new elements being introduced to each of the story arcs. I want to pick one I loved the most, but it’s not possible. I’m hooked on all that is happening.
With a lot of development for the events of the world, Amarah is a fabulous addition to the World of Linaria series. I cannot wait for book four after the things that happened at the end of this one.
Another amazing step in the World Of Linaria Series! Definitely five star for story, characters and writing!
What I really love about these books, is that every time I think I don't care much for a character, I then read their chapter and am sucked back in! I'm disappointed when I have to take a break from Palom's story to read Amarah's chapter, but then by the end of it, I'm disappointed to take a break from Amarah to read Morgen and so on and so on! All the main characters are not only so likeable and entertaining, but each of their stories are gripping and tense in the best ways and I can't wait to see which direction they will go next. And the character growth they individually go through is so well laid out. You'd never see how Amarah went from the person she was in Chapter 1 of Moroda to the person she is at the very end of her own title book. That is, unless you read the books for yourself. Then it's so clear and so well done. It's not like a lot of series these days which have characters literally do 180 flips in order to fit where they want them to be in the plot, there's actual build and explanation behind their change of behaviour - and it's also noted by the characters as well, rather than simply being ignored like this was how they were all along.
Of course, with all that being said, Isa is still my favourite character in the series 100%. Every time she's on the page, I go from being frustrated at her bad treatment, to being excited whenever she fights back in whatever way she can. I never grow tired of her chapters and I'll admit, more than once I was so giddy that I skimmed ahead a few pages. It was very hard to keep from just reading all Isa's parts, and that was only because the other characters were still also interesting. I am so looking forward to seeing more of Isa in the next book more than anyone else and can't wait to see where her story will go, especially when she next runs into either of her brothers.
I also really love the differences between Isa and Sapora. I made a long twitter thread about this on my account, but the characters are just so fascinating. They both have the same backstory and stories of abuse and mistreatment and yet they grew up into two very different people with different views on life and the Ittallan they rule. I also love how easy it would have been to make Isa the villain since she arguable went through a harsher childhood and could therefore be more bitter than Sapora, yet it's actually the other way around. I really can't wait to see where they will go in the future and if Sapora will see his mistakes for what they are or if he will go down with the choices he's made right to the end. And I truly pray that Isa get's the happy ending she so clearly deserves.
Because that's another great part of this series. You never know which direction it is going to take and it's so exciting.
The whole series is an intense, action packed, adventure that has you completely sucked into the story and the characters until you feel like you're practically standing along side them! It is amazing and I cannot praise it enough for the fantastic piece it is! Can't wait for the next book to be released and see where it will go next.
Full review coming. I'm still loving this series but this book definitely seemed a bit darker to me on the mental side of things. Lots of struggle with self worth from many characters. I'll explain more in the review to come.
[THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR BOOK ONE (Moroda) AND TWO (Palom) OF THE LINARIA SERIES]
[Full disclosure, I received an ARC of this book from the author.]
I started reading this book as soon as I received it. There are so many reason why I am in love with this book and this series; I shall stick with the story to begin with.
After the events of Aciel's war in Moroda the mismatch group of adventurers we co know and love split; in Palom we see how Mororda's actions have changed and influenced each of the group.
Amarah circles round one key aspect of the Arks. Four hidden over powered weapons that have been hidden for millennia since the great war between the Arillian's and the Varkain. At the end of Palom we saw Palom discard his dragon forged weapon as he made his was to meet with Amarah (along with his little dragon, Leillu, following), not knowing that Kohl and Amarah had already taken to the skies with Amarah's former ally, Treago. (Read Rise of a Sky Pirate to see more of Treago and Amarah; how she became the awesome sky pirate she is now!)
Treago wanted Amarah for a bounty he's after that will pay out five hundred gold pieces to anyone who can provide reliable information and proof about the location of any one of the Arks. Kohl is sticking with Amarah, he is in her debt since his daughter, Jato, fought Amarah, the collision resulting in the destruction of Amarah's beloved ship Khanna and the loss of one of Amarah's eyes. Amarah has sworn revenge on Jato for what she's taken, not only for her actions fighting alongside Aciel in the war but for what she's actually taken from Amarah.
Sapora is in the throne and keeps his rule guarded by a giant sevastos he used to destroy a fair bit of his city. He shows his power over, what many people consider to be, a god by having the dragon sleep in the castle grounds and fly regularly over the city. But Sapora has his sights set higher, there's a stage illness running through the city that he and his sister, Isa, believe to be Aciel's compulsion seeping from the giant crystal tomb Moroda sacrificed herself to create around the Arillian leader. The King is only half Varkain, a blemish that no-one can seem to forget even though Sapora has proved himself time and again to be as strong as his father; in order to secure his seat in power and bring peace to Linaria Sapora has set a bounty for any information on the locations of ancient weapons.
Being half Varkain and half Ittallan like brother, Sapora, Isa has been looked down on and ignored most of her life even though she is royalty. Isa is at odds against what is happening in her city, unlike Sapora who spent his life in the underground Varkain city of Sereth, Isa has spent her entire life above ground being able to turn into a big cat rather than a snake. She doesn't agree with how Sapora is running the city, he seems to have broken his promise to her of being treated as a queen and is instead being kept even more in the dark, not know about the Sevastos until too late. Isa is working with the rebels against her brother, most of them believing she would make a much better ruler than her brother.
Morgen has fled Sapora's ever watchful gaze to mountain ranges and desserts. He wants to protect people but doesn't know how to when all of those around him can use magic of some sort, even Moroda, a Goldstone was able to wield the magic of a sevastos and seal Aciel away. He wants to learn and goes to the only person he knows that will listen and possibly help him, Amarah's former teacher, Topeko.
There is so much happening in this book but again McNeil is brilliant in her storytelling.
The characters change and evolve over time because of what's happened in the previous books and we can tell that they've changed, actions that they would have taken at the beginning of Book One are not the same as they take in Book Three. The characters are flawed in the most perfect ways, they make human mistakes, you can see why they act one way and not another even though it can frustrate you, they are believable.
The magical lore is fantastic, there are limitations and side-effects of its uses, there are different types of magic depending on race and creature (along with varying belief systems and laws).
The world building and descriptions are beautiful, again Amarah takes place in a variety of places and climates, each with their own threats, prejudices, and views on what's happening elsewhere in the world.
L.L.McNeil's writing style is easy to read, I can sit down and read only to find I've read several chapters and want to continue reading. I love these characters and the over arching story, I couldn't put the book down!
I've said it before but if you liked Jen William's Copper Cat Trilogy then you should give this series a try! I'm so glad there are more books to come!
Dragons & Arillians. A most dangerous combination. For one of the most daring & fearless of sky pirates a risk worth taking! A quest for vengeance & a treasure hunt to boot! A swashbuckler’s dream! This one was a blast! So much fun! Great series!
A great continuation of the series that does a fantastic job of pulling plot threads from the previous books together. We gain a deeper insight into certain character's motivations and learn more about the magic systems. Entertaining but also a little heart-breaking....you've been warned.
Another fantastic entry in the World of Linaria series!
I really loved this book and the fact that we got to spend a lot more time with the characters individually. Compared to the first two this book is a bit of a beast, almost twice as long, so the pace really picks up and we get to learn a lot more about the rich history and legends of Linaria. With so much back story and context, the narrative doesn't feel clunky and the reader is very subtly drip fed information, clues and forboding through off hand character comments and conversations. At no point do any of the conversations seem to be there just as a plot device or education for the reader.
The contrast between Isa and Sapora is beautifully explored and Isa quickly emerged as one of my favourite characters. Without spoiling the ending, I'm super hyped to see where book #4 takes her and her companions next.
I really loved that we got to see more of the different kinds of magic in Linaria, and were introduced to some new antagonists. I'm really intrigued to see how everything will fit together and play out in the next book.
I was worried that with so many characters in different locations the narrative may jump around a lot and leave you skim reading through certain characters chapters (a trap that many fantasy authors seem to fall into). However every time a chapter ended, although I was disappointed to have to leave their story behind, I was quickly sucked back into the next character and then didn't want to leave them behind. By the time I finished reading the book I was just disappointed there wasn't more!
What can I say about this exciting, wonderful world L.L. McNeil has created. Amarah is the 3rd book in the world of Linaria series starting with Moroda, followed by Palom, two fantastic novels, but AMARAH; takes it to a whole new level. It really took a bigger depth into all the characters and I got a lot more emotional in this book and felt compelled to keep turning the page. Each chapter really builds in intensity and leaves you wanting more (admittedly I had to put it down a few times due to how intense some parts of the story got). Really good read and cannot wait for the next novels to be released!
Since discovering the Linaria series during London ComicCon back in May this year, I've been hooked. Fantasy has always been one of my favourite genres, and with the Linaria series, there's plenty to keep a fantasy fan entertained. Ever since her introduction, Amarah has been a firm favourite and this book helped flesh her character beyond what had been written in the first two books. The plot has been expanded, and it's helped set up the future books.
I can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
And I'm really hoping that a certain snake gets his comeuppance.
*I received a free copy of this book, with thanks to the author. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*
I love L.L. McNeil’s World of Linaria series, but do have to confess that this is not my favourite book in the series, partly because Amarah is not one of my favourite characters (of which there are many!) and partly because this feels very much like a ‘middle book’ in terms of plot and pacing.
All the gang are still on their own individual paths and following their separate goals. Amarah has gone back to a bit of pirating, while still hoping to help Moroda and get revenge on Jato for her recent injuries; Palom is doing a few smithing and bodyguarding odd jobs whilst learning how to train his dragon; Sapora is searching for ancient, forgotten power; Morgen is working on new skills in the hope he can undo past mistakes; and Isa and Kohl are trying to decide where their loyalties lie.
All of these routes lead to exciting goals, but it is not yet time for them to reach those climactic points, so this is the bit of the story where they move around and work towards their aims, but without really achieving much, which makes the pace feel a little slow. That said, there is lots of fascinating worldbuilding detail and more character development for all the main players, and the suspense and tension are building up nicely towards the future instalments – I can’t wait to hear from Isa, Kohl and Morgen… I wonder if Sapora will get a volume too?
I definitely recommend reading this series in order. If you are a fan of epic fantasy, dragons and rich worldbuilding and haven’t discovered Linaria yet, then you’re in for a treat!
Amarah was a delightfully meaty edition to The World of Linaria, again expanding the world, heightening the stakes and providing a multitude of action packed adventure only this motley crew knows how to deliver.
Amarah has agreed to help and old ally in an insane task in hopes to free her fallen friend and take revenge on a powerful Arillian who has done her wrong. Luckily, she is the best at what she does and sees no problem in earning a little gold on the way to her goals.
The political instability between the Varkain and Ittallan grows as the new King Sepora seeks out the Ancient Arks. Believing these ancient and dangerous Gods will grant him the power he needs to bring peace to Linaria and not minding how much blood must be shed to unleash them. The Ittallans have had enough, and they are ready to rise, putting Princess Isa on the throne is the only way to ensure their safety. Familial relations are all that is holding this world together, and they are at breaking point.
Sensing unrest, Morgen needs to hold his own. No longer will be sit by and watch the world crumble around him. Heading to Berel he is determined to find out all he can about the ancient magic Ra, but he must remember to play by the rules.
Macrae continues to build upon this magnificent world by gifting the reader a deeper look into different political layouts of the countries of Linaria, expanding the lore of the magics and giving the characters a chance to shine.
This series has been such a highlight of my reading year! I cannot wait to continue on with Isa in the coming months .. then impatiently wait for book 5 with the rest of the world! I can already see a re-read coming on, and that is something I don't do very often! If you haven't picked up The World of Linaria yet, you are missing out!
Full Video Review to come out on the Channel Mid September!
This book took me such a long time to read and I'm not sure why as I was thoroughly enjoying it every time I picked it up.
This installment into The World of Linaria series mainly follows Amarah, one of my fave characters in this series. Amarah is a ruthless sky pirate only interested in sailing the skies and earning gold - or so she seems.
Amarah really comes into her own in this novel, and her character progression was so satisfying to see. She begins as a lone wolf but then we witness her start to form trust with her friends and start to see herself as part of a group.
This also follows Palom, Isa, and Morgen. Palom is still hands down my absolute favorite character in this series so far but I have to admit Isa's character arc in this was phenomenal. I can't wait to get to the next book to see more of her. Morgen's storyline was the weakest for me in this story, but he definitely has potential to become more interesting in further books.
This book is definitely heavy with the political intrigue, which I love in my fantasies. Tacio and Sapora are hellbent on trying to take over Linaria, and as ruthless as he was, I think there's still a smidgen of hope for Sapora. I really hope he's getting his own book soon.
Overall, another solid entry into The World of Linaria. I am obsessed with this series and will definitely be reading the next book.
This book held me in its grasp tighter than any dragon ever could.
I loved how we got to see the characters deal with the aftermath of book 2, seeing them grow and struggle really helped make the characters so much more captivating.
So many moments, that I just didn't see coming. If there was one book I'd have to recommend to any fantasy lover it would be this one (providing they read the first 2 of course).
A truly amazing book, which I will come back to again and again, I just hope more is to come from such a talented author.
Following on from the first two novels in the series, Moroda and Palom, Amarah is the third installment in LL McNeil's sweeping fantasy series - and I am hooked!
Since discovering the author's work I have been captivated by this wonderful world filled with magic, sky pirates and of course... dragons! The story is gripping, the characters have great personality and trust me - you won't want to put this book down!
Book 3 of the world of Linaria series follows directly on from book 2, Palom. The novels in the series are almost large chapters as the books have followed and flowed on from each other so well. Within each novel I have been surprised that they appear to be getting better and better. The character development and world building has ramped up in each book and the longer length of book 3 helps to explore more of the world. I would definitely recommend reading this series back to back as bingeing the series helps immerse you in the world. This series definitely deserves more recognition. One of my favourite independently published series
Amazing book! Definetly Amarah is my favorite character from the saga, such a strong, independent and powerful woman, really inspiring. I really loved how each character has its own personality, making each one unique, loving and hating them, suffering and laughing with them... Dragons above ;) These books drove me into a wonderful world that I would really love to visit again.
Wow this series continues with the best entry so far. The depth to the world is fantastic, the intertwined storylines criss cross continually and the story plot develops throughout the book. There isn't really one major story that is resolved in this book, but everything builds and it feels like I just need to read the next book to keep going and see where it all leads to.
The characters have fully developed as well, they're ingrained in me, I'm invested and emotional when they seem to be in trouble.
Overall I'm not sure what else to say than if you've reached this 3rd book then you know the world and series well enough for me to say that this is the strongest entry, with better character motivations, a deeper and more engaging world and a building plot that will keep me hooked into part 4, Isa.
Amarah is a book packed with magic, sky pirates, dragons, myths and legends. With a race against time to find how to free Moroda from the crystal pillar and each of the remaining characters in the own problems how will they become one again. Read the third book of Linaria series and find out more.
Amarah After the war Amarah has the task of bringing back Moroda. But is faced by trouble with dragons, rage and revenge againstJato and a treasure hunt that ends up with a journey cursed with a wanted sword for Sparod.
Palom Whatibg to help the rebellion against the Snake King is a large task for Palom but now with his dragon companion he soon remembering his place in the plan.
Isa The out of place Princess of the snake King will be tested on her loyalty to either her brother or the people of her kingdom will she bow to her brother or join the revolution against him and claim her place to the throne.
Morgen
The imperial gaurd of the King snake doesn't know his place but knows that the snake King is dangerous to the kingdom and people of Linaria but what will he do what will he search for to help the others.
I have absolutely nothing but loved for this series nothing but action. Parts of exploration are so much more. Characters indavidual parts are amazing and the ending is heart breaking but it gives perspective for the next part of the series.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
My absolute favourite thing about this series is the expansive world it’s setting. Over the 3 books so far, we’ve explored different areas with very different people and magic systems. It feels so rich and we learn more and more as we go through the story.
The specific characters we follow are equally wide spanning. An my personal favourite, is the titular character of this book: Amarah, the sky pirate! Now this story does follow different perspectives so it’s not all from her point of view. But it does mean we get more Amarah than anyone else which means this is easily my favourite so far!
This is a very character driven story and over the three novels so far we’ve seen some really fantastic character development. This also means I’ve been through so many emotional ups and downs, as I really feel like I’ve gone on the journey with them.
Another brilliant book in this series, and I’m (im)patiently waiting for the next edition to be released!
Positives of Amarah Character Development World Building Excitement for next book Negatives of Amarah Sapora’s character development Lack of villain presence I received Amarah by L.L. McNeil from the publisher. This is an unbiased and honest review
This book was another rollercoaster in a series of emotions this series takes me on. Yet again it is was another great read that kept me on the edge of my seat and wanting to know what happens next.
The depth of character development this series shows is astonishing. The depth of emotions they feel and the way things like grief is tackled is really well done.
It’s not often that I enjoy every POV a book has to offer but this series defies that as I love each and every character and the journey they go on.
I loved it! I really like how, even if concentrating on the main character (in this case Amarah), you still get POV of some of the other characters. If I remember correctly, this is done throughout all of the books in this series.
