How do we move our country forward? Stacey Abrams has an answer in this bright and stirring biography, perfect for discussions of voting rights and how people working together can make a difference.
Stacey Abrams is the daughter of two civil-rights activists. She loved going into the voting booth with her parents on Election Day, knowing that their voices mattered. She loved school, even when she was the only Black student in her gifted classes. She loved her classmates at Spelman College -- a historically Black institution -- and worked hard to see they received the fair treatment they deserved.
And today, she brings all those experiences to her role as politician, author, and voting-rights advocate, helping to ensure that every person has a say and every vote gets counted. Stacey Abrams: Lift Every Voice follows Stacey's life from her girlhood to the present, but it also portrays the ordinary people that Stacey fights for -- the beautiful and diverse America that shows up to stand with one another. Backmatter includes a timeline of changes in US voting-rights law from the Constitution through the present day, demonstrating both how far the country has come and how far we have to go. With its spirited text and vivid illustrations, Stacey Abrams: Lift Every Voice will inspire readers to take their own steps forward.
Sarah Warren is an author and early childhood educator. She is dedicated to bringing everyday heroes to life in books that celebrate the diversity in our schools and communities.
A very basic introduction to the life of the dynamic Stacey Abrams of Georgia.
Influenced by her parents, Abrams followed their mantra: Go to church. Go to school. Take care of each other. She talks about attending segregated schools (without labeling them as such), being turned away from the Governor's Mansion because of the color of her ski, attending Spellman College and city meetings, working for the mayor, becoming state representative in GA, unsuccessfully running for governor, and how she continues to advocate for people to vote. Backmatter includes a timeline of U.S. Voting Laws and Stacey Adams' life (ends in 2021, mentioning her nomination for a Nobel Peace Prize and 2nd run for governor), a selected bibliography that includes several children's book titles, and sources for quotations by Stacey Adams within the book.
Digital illustrations by Monica Mikai are well-laid out. Each leads the eye to the right and sets up page turns well. She has captured Abrams' image well. I especially like the addition of emotions felt (but not necessarily spelled out in the text).
A solid picture book about this inspiring woman who is on the move up.
Use in units on voting rights, government, Black history, and women's history.
This children's book is a masterful celebration of courage, resilience, and the unyielding power of determination. Stacey Abrams, a visionary of our time, exemplifies the transformative force of knowledge and the strength of using one’s voice to uplift and inspire. With unwavering hope and boundless pride, this story transcends barriers, embracing the Black experience as an integral part of the shared human journey. Free of hate, fear, or anger, it radiates empowerment, wisdom, and the promise of a brighter future. A must-read for all, but especially for the young minds who will shape tomorrow.
This is a fabulous biography of a fabulous woman! I loved learning more about Stacey Abrams and her lifelong commitment to helping others. Beautifully illustrated! The backmatter is also super helpful to help readers follow Stacey's efforts to improve voting rights in the US.
this book is a bit dense with words for a picture book, but I think it's a great book with African-American inclusion in the classroom. I really enjoyed this book because I think it is a great peak into history as well as biographies that aren't too complicated for elementary students.
