I don't regret reading the series but I wouldn't recommend it. I love a good long read, but at some points it felt like I was slogging through a collection of words trying to find where the story actually got going.

The characters are fairly well fleshed out, with the exception of the main male love interest. He is shallow, predictable and impossible to root for because he lacks conviction.

I would never re-read these unfortunately. There was a lot of potential but it fell short too many times.

Reading in progress, I love the overall story and the characters but I do find I tend to read these at a slower pace.

this book series started off great. red queen introduces amazing world building, decent characters, a plot twist near the end, and a lot of plot potential for the rest of the series. kinda sucks tho bc that potential ended up being disappointing. the second book in the series is extremely boring until the last few chapters. the third one was interesting in some chapters for character development of maven/the part where she escaped. but tbh rlly stupid and it felt like i was reading a wattpad mafia book for most of it. and i have no recollection of what happened after the mc escaped bc that part was even more boring then the second book. the fourth book is kinda all over the place. if you asked me what happened, honestly no idea. from what i think happened, the war ends bc the main villain gets captured at a no attacking allowed negotiation?? and then the main love interest chooses not to fight the mc bc it’s not too late to change or smth. could not have thought of a worse ending. had to put the book down and then force myself to continue reading. this book series is overly dramatic and ig that’s not technically a bad thing but personally it just gave me a ton of second hand embarrassment. the mc is bland but i didn’t mind her in the first book. then she becomes extremely annoying, self centered, and hypocritical in the last three books. the main love interest is even worse. he’s even more hypocritical, annoying, and self centered. they’re a good match. the rebels/mc/main love interest (“good people”) are extremely stupid even in the first book and usually one of my fav thing in books is that i like to be impressed by the creative/smart plans that characters come up with but there were none in this book. honestly didn’t really like this book series. lame characters. boring plot. no humor. etc
the only redeeming qualities imo is the world building and MAVEN.
the main villain is amazing. his mom who didn’t get much screen time was also extremely interesting. they were my two fav characters.
i didn’t rlly go into much detail about this series but i might give individual reviews for each book later.

This series is one of a kind and is one of my favorites ever. I own the complete series and have recommended it to all of my friends so they have read them all too. Victoria Aveyard is an amazing writer and detailed author that will keep you flipping through the pages then torn apart by her epic finale finish. Mare Barrow is a relatable heroine and he being the "Lighting Girl" is very different from other books with the main character controlling a supernatural element like water, fire, earth, light, and darkness. And Evangeline Samos's ability is really cool even though she has a fiery additude. Cal and Maven keep readers switching back in forth with shipping people with eachother, I did it countless times lol. 😂 I think what makes Victoria Aveyard such a skilled and successful author is because of her original ideas and her writing style that draws in readers from the first page. Her POV changing also helped us get a chance to experience different points of view for different characters along the way. When I finished the last book, I felt so accomplished I had made it through the series but I was also sad of course that it had ended especially will the whole maven situation at the end, but I'm NOT giving spoilers here.

❕BOOK REVIEW❕

📚 NOSTALGIC BOOKS 📚

⭐️ Rating - 4.5 stars

✨”Red queen series” by Victoria Aveyard✨

This series tells the amazing and exciting story of Mare Barrow, a young Red who finds she has a unique ability that challenges the system of power in a world where Reds and Silvers are separated by blood.

Mare's character development is one of the book's strengths. We watch her transform from a stubborn teenager to a tough and strategic leader, influenced by the betrayals and difficulties she faces. The love triangle between Mare, Cal, and Maven was annoying but it added to the emotional intensity of the story.

The world-building is interesting with a dystopian society that combines fantasy and politics. The series also had unexpected plot twists, which had me on edge, especially with Maven who quickly became my favorite character.

I remember reading this series and feeling completely absorbed by it. The twists, the characters, and the storyline made it an unforgettable read that I enjoyed from start to finish.

I am yet to read a series better than this. Emotional, thrilling and inspiring read. Older YA fiction at its best. When the series started being told from multiple perspectives, the reader was allowed to understand the motives and views of each character in so much more detail, allowing you to develop more complex views on the plot.

The graphic descriptions, complex society and well-paced plot allows for a gripping read and I am looking forward to reading more material from Aveyard.

Supernatural abilities, duty, romance, corruption and morality sum up this series well I believe. But especially loyalty and trust. Good luck and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

I really liked this book. It has some great characters and a good subromance. It left me wanting to read more after the end of the book and I think the author did a great job with the Villain of the story. The storyline was quite good and the abilities that the characters had added some interest. It mentioned the political status, which was helpful so you could know how the war between reds and silvers started or began. Definitely my faviourite fantasy novel, it didn't go too far with the whole dragons and all (the classic fantasy novel). A must read series.

I had finished reading King's Cage, and I am still contemplating whether to read the remaining books or not. Here's why:
I had my eyes and heart on three characters, Mare, Cal, and Maven.
Mare is okay. She's a teenager who wants to live a normal life, away from constription but yeah, her world turned around because of her eagerness to save her friend from the thing that took her brothers away, and of course to save herself. In doing so, she bumped into a stranger, Cal, who would then cloud her judgement and worst of all affect her choices.
Cal, well, Cal is Cal. I mean he is plain as day (for me), and yes he is what his brother told Mare him to be, a pet to the crown. So this brother of him, Maven, he is what really hooked me in the series.
Maven, was broken. I would like to read more about Maven, but yet he is the villain of this story. My heart aches for him, truly. He's lost, and he knows that turning back would just be as hard. There's nothing more painful than forgetting the love you have treasured the most, and its all thanks to his mother whom he also loved by the way. His mother who had forged him to become a person he doesn't want, and his mother who took away all his choices. Thank you, author, for breaking me like this. I am still mourning for Maven and for the path ahead of him, a path in which death is the only salvation. He has become a monster and he knows that.
That is all, I hope I will be brave enough to finish this series and of course face Maven's fate like he would. It is terrific and painful.

These books are far too long to be this vapid. My OCD required me to continue the entire series, knowing I would never get that time back. I needed closure.
Let’s start with the fact that the first book is called Red Queen. Mare Barrow never is and never becomes the Red Queen.
These characters have NO depth. The plot meanders like a drunken sailor, ending with a book of novellas that feel like a disjointed ADHD nightmare.
If I had to listen to Mare Barrow whine one more time about Maven Calore, “I know he murdered an infant and all these other innocent people to deliver me a note, but all I see is the young boy in the shadow…”. Yuck.
Plus, her power is NOT used well. She is not a heroine. She constantly has to be rescued from every stupid situation she inserts herself into. Silent stone sends her into complete uselessness through the whole series.
Never mind that we are supposed to believe that silent stone is made from the blood of an Arven or Silence mixed into a brick? This extremely rare talent, and they were juiced to make enough blood for every brick and shackle in a palace and a prison?!
Please also understand that the last book is essentially a book of novellas. I’m leaving a separate review of that. So don’t expect any kind of closure.

I absolutely loved the first book; my initial review was full of praise, and even though I was spoiled on the plot twist, it still managed to catch me off guard. Now, with all that being said, the series' antagonist really wasn't doing it for me. Intended to be portrayed as a villain, he gave off more love interest vibes, and I don't think that was intentional. It felt like he had more depth and passion for the main character than her actual love interest.

Now, onto the plot—it could have easily been three books shorter. Every time a major plot point should have unfolded, a betrayal was just thrown in, and believe me, there were many. I feel like the main character didn't have fast enough or substantial development, and the same goes for her relationships. The romance, initially given a prominent spot, was then left without adding any real value. If the romance wasn't supposed to significantly impact the series, I wish it had been on the back burner throughout, as I struggled with the constant betrayals and reconciliations. I genuinely gave this series a shot but couldn't handle it after the fourth book.

I really enjoyed reading it. Although there are some parts that I really didn't like 😬, my least favorite book in this whole series is Glass Sword, it was too slow-paced. My most favorite book in this whole series is War Storm, it has everything in it, all the fight scene and shocking revelations and twists🤩. But of course, you're not gonna enjoy War Storm without reading the first 3. My second favorite book in this series is obviously Broken Throne. IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL! I legit wanna cry🥹 It felt like I'm part of the series/world there and I'm actually reading Julian's history books and maps🗺️. It felt like I was actually living therr and was studying our history. Don't get me started with the very last part when it has Victoria Aveyard's writings and thoughts on Red Queen. She's awesome. I am looking forward for more of that section on every series she will write. I can't wait!

If you want more of the Shadow and Bone character dynamics THIS BOOK IS SO SIMILAR THAT ITS COMICAL its like the authors used the same charicter templates you got the badass female mc, the 2 (and a half) love interests including the hometown boy, and 2 hot princes, the even more badass twins, the terrible king and queen and even the (kinda) unexpected villain trope. But even though its very similar to the shadow and bone series, it has some great features of its own and will be a good read for anyone in need of a new Fantasy world. All this to say if you want amazing character dynamics similar to shadow and bone, you need to read this (11+ some sexual scenes but not at all graphic and no smut)

maybe i had unrealistic expectations? however, i didn't care for the first 3/4 of the books. there were several causes for this.

we see the world through mare's eyes, and i've always considered her unlike-able. she whined and complained. she placed a lot of people at risk, she was indecisive and to be honest, was irritating.

she lacked a sense of depth, her one redeeming feature was her love for her family. but then something unexpected happened. what a turn! i won't give anything away, but wow! that was not something i expected to happen. it shifted the entire tone of the novel. everything began o make sense. it brought mare's personality to life and made the love triangle make sense.

I don’t mean to be a hater, but I just couldn’t finish this book. Nearing the end of the series it just got so depressing up to the point where it was just monotonous. And the end of the series??? I mean, come on! This book series was one of 2 series ever that I haven’t finished. Ever. So, I mean I just couldn’t deal with it!!! And the main character, Mare. She’s not likable or anything like that. She’s tough and fierce I guess but otherwise… nothing. Most books make me fall in love with the characters, but not this one! I’m sorry, just if you’re anything like me, you will hate this book. But Victoria Aveyard I would like to say, your other books are amazing. So, no hats!!! 😁

The books sucks, but I love them.
I love it.

I hate the characters and I love them.

No words left, maybe they will come later, I’ll find out.

If you are wondering if these books are worth reading, there’s only one way to find out.. I say grab book nmr 1 (Red Queen) and dive into a rollercoaster of death and love.

My OG ya fantasy series to recommend. I read this back in middle school and have never gotten over it, honestly my Roman Empire.

World building depth: 3/5
Romance: 2/5
Politics: 4/5

Overall a great read for someone who wants a more light and airy fantasy, something that you can easily register in your mind. Book 2 and 4 can be slow at times. Glass Sword was my least favorite of the main fourth books.

This is the only series I’ve ever been unable to finish. I felt like it was so draggy to the point that i could not stomach it. I bought the boxed set too 🥲🥲 I regret this purchase so much and no matter how hard I tried to sit down and read this to get my money’s worth, it was way too long and draggy. What couldve been finished in a duology was made into 5 books; thats how bad it was for me.

the series that will make you want to end it all, but in a good way. the twists and turns are unexpected and will leave you with a frustration that knows no bounds. you'll be upset and want to throw your book across the room, but you'll still be rooting for the characters to find their way.

One word... boring. I don't know how this series has such a high rating. The entire time I was reading it, I felt like I had read so many other books just like it; it felt unoriginal and predictable. Struggled to finish reading the whole series.

Great YA series.

Strong female empowerment.

Fight the power, resist oppression, kick some ass.

Must read the last book in the series to get main characters final "story".

Wish the ending was more...complete.
