Johns Mill Amish Romance #3

Courage in the Storm

Rate this book
In this powerful Amish romance, an isolated woman and a compassionate man learn that love can build a bridge between their two worlds.

Since witnessing the murder of her beloved parents, Miriam Hochstedler suffers from paralyzing anxiety and a deep-seated fear of the Englisch . Unwilling to venture beyond her family’s Tennessee farm, she forms a close bond with a badly injured gelding. Like Miriam herself, the traumatized animal seems unlikely to recover—until skilled horse whisperer Reuben Brenneman arrives.

A survivor of an abusive childhood, Reuben understands fear better than most. He’ll do whatever it takes to help a terrified animal, but his compassion doesn’t extend to the church that turned a blind eye to his family’s suffering. Once he finishes this job, he’ll return to the Englisch world, putting his Amish heritage behind him forever.

As Miriam works alongside Reuben, battling the horse’s fear—and her own—an unexpected friendship blooms and deepens into romance. But the Amish faith that sustains her inspires only distrust in Reuben, and the Englisch world he’s chosen has already broken her heart once.

Falling in love was easy. But staying together will take all the courage they have.

Author Laurel Blount doesn’t disappoint her readers with this soon to be released novel, Courage in the Storm. This is book 3 of the John Mills Amish Romance series. Mariam Hochstedler, Reuben Brenneman and a horse named Breeze are the main characters in this story. If you have read books one 1 and 2 of this series you will know Mariam’s story but Reuben is a new character introduced to readers in this book. The two come together when a decision is made on what should be done about Breeze who is a traumatized horse. What makes this story so good is that Breeze isn’t the only one who has been traumatized but also Reuben and Mariam as well. God has bought three hurting living beings together in this tender hearted story about healing and learning to trust in God and one another.

This story captured my heart as I read through the pages of this novel. I felt their struggles as they fought to over come their fears that had held them as hostages for such a long time. My heart ached for them and I found this book felt so real I almost forgot it was fiction. It was unpredictable, romantic, original, inspirational and definitely a page turner. I loved the ending and I’m sure readers will be hearing more about Breeze , Mariam and Reuben in the next book. I have loved this John’s Mills series and can’t wait to read book four.

I recommend Courage in the Storm to readers of Amish Romance and Christian Fiction. If you have read the first two books in this series you won’t want to miss book 3. This book will release on 4/25/23.

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed here in this review are my own.

This trip back to Johns Mill and Amish country is another emotional and special story. The characters are so realistic and familiar. The background story came back to me quickly. The Hochstedler family has been through so much, beginning with the tragic death of their parents. Miriam has been traumatized since she witnessed their murder in the family's general store. She hasn't left the farm and has bonded with a horse staying on the farm where she lives with her brother Joseph and sister-in-law Naomi. But the horse is also traumatized and will be put down if things don't change. Reuben Brenneman is a man who left the Amish church before he was baptized because of his abusive father. The church never worked hard enough to set his father straight. Reuben has deep pain also. Both Miriam, Breeze, the horse, and Reuben benefit from this situation and healing comes from unlikely and unusual places. But the path is not easy and not smooth. Laurel Blount is a wonderful storyteller who brings forth stories that touch one's heart with great characters full of faith, love, and emotion that reaches deep and is lasting. I highly recommend this book and all in the series.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

COURAGE IN THE STORM by Laurel Blount is not the first book I’ve ever read by Ms. Blount and it certainly won’t be the last! The Two main characters, Miriam Hochstedler and Reuben Brenneman stole my heart and gained my respect. Miriam was witness to her parents dying by violence and it has shaken her to her core. She struggles with meeting strangers and is basically a prisoner on her family farm. After a bit of time, she can actually leave the house and go to the chicken coop and the barn. In the barn is a horse named Breeze. He was involved in a buggy accident and is now almost wild. Miriam does not wish the horse to be put down and convinces her brother to hire the horse whisperer.

Reuben used to be Amish but is now English and has a special gift working and caring for horses. When Reuben comes to work on the farm, both of their lives are going to change drastically. I really enjoyed the authors writing style and her ability to draw me into the story. Most of the chapters ended in a way that peaked my interest and left me eager to start reading the next one. You won’t be sorry you picked up COURAGE IN THE STORM….your only decision will be which of the author’s other books you want to read next.

Tragedy, forgiveness, love, and other spiritual elements are scattered throughout COURAGE IN THE STORM. Laurel Blount is an amazing writer, conveying every emotion into her characters. Laurel gives her readers a wonderful story of letting go of the past and leaning into the people who are standing by, waiting to help even if when you don’t realize they’ve been there all the time. This story can be read as a stand alone, but I will recommend reading the first two books so you can get to know all of the beautiful and faithful characters. COURAGE IN THE STORM is not like most Amish stories. It is more like watching the evening news, and then having your heart break for everything this family is going through. I am eager to see what will come next!

COURAGE IN THE STORM is a quick read and unputdownable! There were quite a few times when reading it that I wanted to reach into the pages and hug a few of these people with what they were feeling and what they were going through. I found myself laughing one second and then tearing up the next. If you are looking for a beautiful emotional story to pull you out of your book slump, you can’t go wrong with COURAGE IN THE STORM.

Laurel Blount is now an author I want to read more of. I loved Miriam and Reuben, the primary characters, but I also fell in love with all of the secondary characters as well. Every one of them has an important part to play in this heart tugging story and even though I wanted to reach in and shake one or two of them every now and then, they all weaseled their way into my heart. My emotions were all over the place and I was even reaching for the tissues quite a few times.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. All opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given.

Imagine a man who grew up Amish but now Englisch, and could be called the horse whisperer. He understands abuse and trauma in animals. Now view a lovely Amish woman who is traumatized by witnessing her parents killed in their store by an Englischer. Her anxiety being around any Englisch or leaving the safe place, the farm.

Miriam’s family has an injured & traumatized gelding. Breeze trusts NO human except in a very small way he doesn’t fear Miriam — perhaps because she understands his fear.

Enter Reuben Brenneman, former Amish, well-known for his ability to save a horse and create a well-behaved animal. What he doesn’t realize is he can do the same in a small way for a young woman who only recently was able to leave her house. It only took a year.

My review …
Reuben does not like working that closely with the Amish since his gmay leaders did not help keep his father from beating him and his mother again and again due to his drinking. But he owes Sam, the gelding’s owner, and has taken on Breeze. Immediately, he realizes that Breeze has a connection with Miriam. Reuben is a tough guy — he has had to be — but when he finds that his Englisch outfit creates terror for Miriam, our tough guy did something he swore he would never do — wear Amish clothes.

Miriam feels a lot for Breeze and is willing to help Reuben — in Amish clothing and in doing so, takes steps forward in overcoming her trauma.

What I loved …
Everything. I’d give this six stars if it was possible. Such a wonderful, powerful story. Well-researched by the author, Laurel Blount. I felt I learned a great deal about traumatized animals through Breeze’s story. Every character was rich in just the right amount of detail. The scenes are so well described that the reader easily “sees” them. The pacing of the story was, at least for this reviewer, perfect.

This story is RICH! Abundant with wonderful characters, plots, and subplots. And wonderful, knowledgeable phrases. If you have ever wondered how fear can truly impact a person, reading “Courage in the Storm” will help you to understand. To paraphrase the author, “Fear — [even unreasonable fear] — has its reasons.”

One fun spot was Miriam and her chickens. The chicken coop was the first place she visited when she left the house for the first time. Miriam names her chickens — and the rooster had been named for a bishop! Most people don’t name their chickens, at least we never did. Milking cows, yes. Chickens, no.

So, I urge you to add this book to your to-be-read stack. Pre-order it. Tell your library to order it. “Courage in the Storm” is THAT good.

I received a complimentary DRC (digital review copy) of “Courage in the Storm” via NetGalley from the publisher, Berkley Publishing Group, Berkley. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

If you want deep, emotional Amish fiction, then this series is for you. I have thoroughly loved every single book so far, and just when I think one book in the series is my favorite, Laurel comes along and writes a new one and IT becomes my favorite!

Courage in the Storm was enchanting from the very first page. Miriam had more things in common with a horse than you would expect. Both she and Breeze struggled mightily with fear to the point that they could not function at 100% in everyday life. Miriam had not left her family's farms since the death of her parents, and Breeze's trust in humans was severely broken even since he had been injured in a buggy accident. Well, along came Reuben. Not only did he identify the problems that Breeze was having, but he saw Miriam as the quickest way to help the horse begin to trust again.

My favorite line was this one -

It was so hard to be afraid all the time.

This one sentence about broke me. I cannot imagine living in a constant state of fear, and I have to give this author props for conveying those emotions in a very real way. Reuben very easily could have belittled her or kept her out of Breeze's training regimen, but he saw Miriam for all she could be. And in spite of all his resistance to the Amish and desperately trying to be considered an Englisher, Miriam's gentle and giving spirit broke through his walls, too. These two individuals with lots of baggage found they could overcome their past with each other's help and with God's. It was so fragile and precious and caring all at once, and I hated to reach the end of their story.

Other favorite moments -

Reuben telling Miriam there was a quilt museum.
Miriam making Amish clothes for Reuben.
Reuben voluntarily buying fabric for Miriam (trust me, the average guy DOES NOT do this!!)
Miriam and Reuben's first walk.
When Miriam and Reuben talk about all the different shades of brown.

Y'all - there was so much to love here! Yes, it's Amish and I think most people instantly equate that as being boring fiction, but this story was so deep and heartfelt. I wanted it to go on and on. :) Nothing to fear, though (no pun intended)! The 4th and final book will be released in just a few months where we will hopefully see Caleb returning to this wonderful and caring family.

Courage in the Storm gets 5 stars from me and a "brava" to this wonderful author for such a genuinely beautiful tale.

I’ve been looking forward to Miriam’s story since she witnessed the tragic murder of her parents when were gunned down by an obsessive “Englischer” in her family’s general store. Since then, Miriam has suffered from major PTSD, and has not been able to leave the family home in more than a year. Only now has she been able to venture outside to feed the chickens and visit Breeze, a traumatized horse. A horse she’s become attached to, and unfortunately may not last if they can’t get him past his fears enough to be useful. Breeze is her brother-in-law’s horse injured in a buggy accident that scarred them both and Sam doesn’t want to sell the horse for slaughter, so he decides to call in a favor from an old friend with a special talent for working with horses.

Reuben Brenneman left the Plain/Amish life when the abuse of his father, a mean drunk, was reported and overlooked. Reuben felt betrayed by the people he felt should’ve protected him, and so going to the Hochstedler’s farm, an Amish one, isn’t something he wants to do, but he owes Sam. What he doesn’t count on is Miriam. The Amish woman terrified of him at first, in his Englischer clothes, but she’s willing to try to work with him to help Breeze, since Breeze has formed an attachment to Miriam. They work together and form a friendship, Miriam making progress overcoming her fears while helping with Breeze and with Reuben seeing a different side of the Amish people. Both falling a little more for each other with every day that passes.

Courage in the Storm
was a moving, emotional story with three souls overcoming a tragic past: Miriam, Reuben and yes, Breeze. I was invested in their journey of healing and love! It was a gradual process, but every step brought me such joy. The story is inspirational, compelling, and filled me with happiness!

A copy was kindly provided by Berkley Romance in exchange for an honest review.

Great find! Laurel Blount is a new to me author.

Courage in the Storm delivers an engaging story line, character growth, a glimpse at the Amish life and faith in God.

After witnessing a horrifying tragedy, Miriam no longer leaves the safety of her brother's farm. She delights in her family that visit her and in her brother-in-law's horse Breeze. Miriam and Breeze understand each other. They are both living in fear.

Reuben left his family and the Amish way of life years ago. As a successful horse trainer, he's the last hope for Breeze. His love for horses and his friend Sam are the only reasons he would agree to live with an Amish family, even if only temporary.

Favorite lines:
"Gott has a sense of humor. Nee, this isn't a life I'd ever have picked out for myself- except for marrying Emma. Yet here I am, happier than I'd ever have been if I'd followed by own path."

I'm glad there is another book in the series.

My gratitude to publisher Berkley for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Congratulations Lauren Blount on your book, Courage in the storm. Thank you, Berkley Publishing Group, for allowing me to read an ARC of this outstanding book. All ideas in this review are my own, and I was not required to give a positive review.

Miriam Hochstedler Has a disabling fear that will not allow her to leave the farm where she lives with her brother and sister in law. Marion saw her mother and father killed in front of her by an English man. This experience has imprisoned her on the farm and does not allow her to visit her sister, church or anywhere outside of her home farm. It even took her a while to venture into the chicken yard.

Reuben Brenneman Is a horse trainer who really understands traumatized animals, possibly since he was abused as a Child, and left his Amish upbringing to become Englisch. Reuben arrives to retrain Breeze, a gelding, who has been traumatized after an accident and seems to only identify,Cautiously, with Miriam.

This is a well written story. The storyline and characters are developed so well that you feel you are part of the story.

Just when you think you have it all figured out, your in for another change of events. The wordage carrying you through the story is excellent.

Don’t miss this 5-star read. It is really a good one.

Courage in the Storm is the third book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series and features the youngest of the Hochstedler siblings, Miriam. Miriam was in the store when her parents were killed and only survived because the killer's gun jammed. She is suffering from PTSD/anxiety and has not left the family farm for over a year. In the second book in the series, Sam, who is now her brother-in-law was in a serious buggy accident which left his horse, Breeze with extreme fright of everything. Sam hires, Ruben Brenneman, a man who left the Plain life ten years ago, who owes Sam. Reuben is renowned for his skill to work with horses who have suffered trauma or are wild for various reasons. Breeze is living at the Hochstedler homestead, and Joseph is crazy about having this Englischer on his farm, but will do what Sam and Miriam want for Breeze. No one ever expected that Reuben could use the same techniques to help Miriam become stronger and finally be able to leave her home. As well, they develop a friendship and then even more. Will Reuben give up his Englisch ways and finally get baptized so he and Miriam can have a relationship?

I have enjoyed all three books in this series and this was one of my favourites. Miriam was always as timid as can be and preferred her sewing to being around people. This became even worse and her fear of Englischers was debilitating. As she gradually came out of her shell, I was rooting for her. She was stronger than everyone thought. Reuben had so much baggage and anger. He had be abused by her father and the church did nothing to protect him, his mother and sisters. He was angry at the church, but his faith was still important to him. He was so tender and caring with Miriam and Breeze, a true horse and people whisperer. Their relationship developed gradually over a couple of months and it almost didn't make it, but you will have to read this one to see what happens. This is a story dealing with trauma and its results, living with abusive parents and the lifetime effects, hope, forgiveness, family, mental health, faith and more. I can't wait to read Caleb's story. If you enjoy Amish fiction, Christian romance and stories of healing and new beginnings, then I recommend you read Courage in the Storm, or better yet, all the Johns Mill Amish Romance books.

“It was so hard to be afraid all the time.“

Oh y’all. This book. The depth of emotion, the beautiful character layers (including Breeze, the horse), and the engaging plot all left me completely immersed in Courage in the Storm until I finished the last word.

The line I quoted at the beginning of this review hit me in all the feels. Because I’ve been there. For years I lived with debilitating anxiety and fear. It didn’t matter that what I was panicking about made no sense even to me – I was incapable of turning it off. And it IS hard to be afraid all the time. Hard and isolating and so lonely. Thanks to some counseling and a great prescription medication, I have not lived in fear for several years. Needless to say, I readily identified with Miriam and her debilitating fear – and with Breeze and his – and Blount’s honest & tender portrayal of both left me teary-eyed more than once. I was rooting for them to find freedom, because I know how marvelous it feels, and I could not have put down their journey if I’d wanted to.

This brings us to Reuben, the fear-whisperer. Oh, that’s not on his business card, but in many ways it’s the role he stepped into for both Breeze and Miriam. I loved the way that Breeze and Miriam connected so deeply with each other, as well as how Reuben was able to utilize that unexpected bond to help them both. But perhaps the most beautiful part of this story for me was how they all ended up healing each other, Reuben included. He has his own trauma that he’s still working through, and it’s the reason he is no longer Amish. While the attraction between Reuben and Miriam is immediately evident (well… ok… maybe not at their first meeting haha), I really could not see how the author was going to get past these obstacles for a romance between them and still stay true to their characters. You’ll have to read it for yourself to see what happens, but I will say that I need not have doubted.

One more quick point – I have read lots of Amish fiction, and a bishop is nearly always a prominent side character. I have seen godly bishops full of grace & wisdom, and I have seen legalistic bishops full of themselves. But until reading Courage in the Storm, I had not yet met a bishop like Abram lol. Bless his heart, it’s in the right place. And between the twinkle in his eye and his penchant for cookies, I couldn’t help but love him. But my stars, that man – however well-intentioned – is very good at making a mess of things, and I frequently wanted to shake him a little. I did really enjoy this aspect to the story, though, as well as how the author redeemed him in my eyes by the end. It’s yet another element that separates this from the ‘same old, same old’ Amish romance plots and sets it apart with excellence.

Bottom Line: While I have featured this author and her books several times on my blog, Courage in the Storm happens to be the first book by Laurel Blount that I’ve had time to read. It will absolutely not be my last. I fell in love with Breeze, with Miriam, with Reuben… and even Bishop Abram. And though I haven’t read the first two books in this series, I never felt lost or detached from the other characters. The author does such a great job of presenting the characters and their backstories for new readers without bogging down the story for fans of the series, but I definitely want to go back and catch up on this series – and all of her books. Courage in the Storm is a story that will linger me for a long time, and it’s definitely going to stay one of my fave reads of 2023!

Yes, Author Laurel Blount has done it again. She has written an authentic Amish romance filled with faith, courage, inspiration, and hope. The characters are so believable you find yourself relating to their emotions and thoughts. Life sometimes is unfair, and Miriam Hochstedler finds that to be true when she witnesses her parents murder. Reuben Brenneman arrives at her family’s farm to work with an injured horse. Having survived an abusive childhood, Reuben understands trauma more than most. As Miriam and Reuben work together they develop a close friendship. Is it possible the friendship can deepen into something more when Miriam is Amish and Reuben is now Englisch? Great series that is not to be missed.

One of my favorite books this year with wonderful characters including a wounded horse, all of whom need love and understanding.

Laurel Blount gives Reuben and Miriam heart wrenching backstories and wounds that had me hoping they would overcome their hardships and find love. A romance has to be a happily-ever-after, so you won't be disappointed with this story.

Blount keeps the tension and relationship building going throughout the book. I liked how Blount had Reuben deal with his relationship with God along with his feelings for Miriam.

I was cheering for these two love birds and the extended family in Johns Mill.

Don't miss this one.

COURAGE IN THE STORM by Laurel Blount is the third book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series. It’s the artfully crafted story of Miriam Hockstedler and Reuben Brenneman as they each work through their past demons as they find themselves drawn to each other.

Miriam was in her parent’s store the day they were both murdered. The event has left her paralyzed in time. Although she’s made some major steps forward by now being able to actually go outside the house, she’s still unable to leave the property she’s lived on her whole life. It’s been baby steps, but it seems to be one step forward and two steps back at times. Since it was an Englisch man that killer her parent’s, being anywhere around the Englisch and especially men can send her into such a tailspin that she freezes with fright and often passes out if she’s not able to flee the situation. It’s her love of all the fabulous colors found in fabric and crafting her quilts, choosing both the colors and patterns, that have saved her on many a day and continue to bring her great joy. She’s definitely 100% Amish – not only in faith, but as she said – she “loves quilts and chickens”!

Reuben’s childhood growing up Amish was far from the perfect picture of family life most envision when the word Amish is mentioned. Far from it! His father had a horrible temper. Albeit one he could hide from the bishop and fellow church members, it’s one that was lashed out on his family, Reuben in particular, on a regular basis often times going past words into physical mistreatment. Reuben willingly took it to save his mother and sisters from his rath. But even he knew that he was bidding his time until he could escape. That time came when all of his sisters but one had married leaving the home. At that time, it had become so bad, he begging his mother and the one sister to leave with him. They refused. It was thanks to a dear friend’s help that he managed to get away from his father and he’s never looked back. Having not joined the church, he wasn’t shunned, but after the church turning their back on his pleads for help, that won’t have bothered him either. He never intended to return. He continues to send his mother money and asking them to leave as well.

When Breeze, the horse that had been severely injured in a buggy accident, was healed but still acting out so unruly that it looked like he may be headed to the slaughter house, it was Miriam that begged Sam, his owner, to give him another chance. After all, folks hadn’t given up on her and she was far from being mentally over her ordeal either. Sam consented to try one more thing. He would send for his friend Reuben. If anyone could retrain Breeze over being frightened, he would be the man to do so. Reuben had promised himself to never work for the Amish. After all, now he was a member of the Englisch world. However, the one person he couldn’t turn down was Sam. He owed Sam big time and he was definitely one to pay his dues. He’d train this horse and be in and out. No strings and he would then be out of debt to anyone. Never to step foot on an Amish property again.

When it’s proven that to train Breeze out of his strong-willed ways that he needs Miriam’s help, partly due to his limited time frame to work with, how can they work together when her fear of the Englisch had her passing out on him on their first encounter? What can Reuben do to get Miriam to trust him? Can he return her help with opening her eyes to more possibilities than an isolated life on her family’s property with her brother and sister-in-law? Can Miriam show Reuben that not all Amish communities are like the one he left? Is it possible for Miriam to do as the bishop says and maybe bring one of the flock back into the fold by example instead of preaching? Will Miriam be able to finally start to spread her wings or will they be clipped by unthinking actions of others? Will both of them be able to stay just friends or do feelings start to take root? Will others try to interfere? Will Reuben start to feel like the “old life is putting out feelers - like ivy”? Does he like it or will the desire to run take over?

COURAGE IN THE STORM is a heartfelt, page-turning story that makes a fabulous addition to the series. However, it can most definitely be read as an amazing standalone book. Laurel Blount brings the characters to life giving them as much color and character as one of Miriam’s beautiful quilts that customers seem to be standing in line to purchase. The story of Miriam and Reuben (with its many facets, assorted colors that bring to mind stages of their lives and the work required for all pieces fit together properly) is as intricate and beautiful as the most elaborate quilt design. You will be feeling all the emotions of both main characters as well as the struggles of supporting characters who only want what is best for a loved one. If anything, you will be taught to never give up on love – especially in this story. However, I might advise you to have a tissue or two handy along the way. COURAGE IN THE STORM gets my YAHOO!! YOU’RE GOING TO LOVE IT - FIVE STARS! Highly recommend it to everyone! Just be prepared because you won’t able to put it down once you start reading it.

Although I received an ARC, I was not asked or requested to write a review. All opinions are completely my own.

Thank you in advance to the publisher, Berkley/Penguin Random House, for providing a complimentary review copy through the author’s launch team. A positive review was not required nor requested, and all words are my own.

I got introduced to the author’s work in 2019 with Hometown Hope, the third book in her Love Inspired series, Pine Valley.

I ended up getting the first two books of that series (still on my TBR). But, I’ve read each of her LI books as they’ve released.

Like other authors, she has branched into the more “mainstream” publishing, only the Amish fiction sub-genre of Inspirational fiction.

In May 2021, Shelter in the Storm – the first book in this series – was released. And, I ended up reading it prior to being on the launch team for the second book, Strength in the Storm.

For those wondering if this book can act as a standalone – not in my opinion. Much of Miriam’s background is established in the first book, the second book establishes the accident that Sam and Breeze are in, which brings Reuben into this story – Courage in the Storm. So, I HIGHLY and STRONGLY suggest readers get the first two books before reading this one.

Obviously, having read the first two books – I DESPERATELY needed this one. After all, isn’t that cover just STUNNING? Due to my favorite color being purple, the first book is technically my favorite cover. But, artistically? This one REALLY pops out!

Blount returns us to Johns Mill, home of the Hochstedler family:

🌩️ Joseph & Naomi (Shelter in the Storm)
🌩️ Emma & Sam (Strength in the Storm)
🌩️ Miriam (Courage in the Storm)

Blount also introduces us to:

🐎 Reuben
⛪ Adam

As this is an Amish fiction story, there will be themes and mentions of faith.

There is no mention of the shooter – Trevor – only that Sam wasn’t able to keep him in “custody”. Also, it is apparent Sam nor Emma mentioned seeing Trevor. Trevor still remains at large, and his parents are absent from this book.

Like the previous books, this is told from the POVs of the “couple” – Miriam and Reuben.

While the shooting is mentioned, most of the story deals with Breeze – Sam’s horse from the accident in book #2.

This book has mentions of anxiety, PTSD, alcoholism, and child abuse.

It’s now been 18 months since the shooting of Miriam’s parents, and she’s finally venturing outside of the home – but not quite to the road or town. She is looking forward to better days – her sister Emma is pregnant as well as her sister-in-law Naomi. Yet, she still feels like a prisoner in her home.

But, the family is also dealing with the fallout from Sam’s accident. His vision has worsened from an unrelated condition, but his horse – Breeze – is suffering much like Miriam.

Sam has a choice – to try to rehabilitate and rehome the animal, or let it be slaughtered. He knows someone who can help – someone who wants NOTHING to do with the Amish life – Reuben.

Reuben, as he owes Sam for helping him leave an abusive situation, agrees to the job – but then, he’s leaving anyone and anything Amish behind.

When he arrives, he assesses the horse. Breeze is fearful, full of terror, and in obvious “fight” mode. Reuben then sees Miriam, and as he’s dressed like the Englisch, she is terrorized. Of course, this leads Reuben to a conclusion – Breeze and Miriam are linked.

He soon recalls the shooting and connects everything. He learns she hasn’t ventured into town since an incident with a photographer, but he says “yet”. While she isn’t his “project”, he knows that she will have to venture to town to get better. However, at this point – Miriam can help with the horse.

Joseph is against it though, however – both Breeze and Miriam make progress. More so when Reuben makes a decision to do something he’d prefer not to do.

Knowing Reuben’s past, Miriam’s family worries he will lead her away from the church. However, she is strictly Amish – Reuben jokes that her liking chickens and quilting solidifies that.

However friendly they get; they know that they don’t belong in the other’s world. Yet, they’re still drawn to each other – each healing from their own traumatic pasts. And, Miriam definitely needs the courage to face the crew that is filming a movie about her family’s tragedy.

A new bishop arrives and sees a chance to bring Reuben back to the church, yet it is Adam’s meddling that causes more issues for Reuben. But, he realizes that he isn’t alone now.

Courage in the Storm delivers a powerful message about second chances, the power of healing, the strength of faith, and the shelter of family in an emotional and provocative read.

Blount once again delivers a story that has realistic elements within its fictional covers and draws the reader into the story. So much so, that I ended up reading half of it inside of a 4-hour period. The short chapters and steady pacing really held my interest along with the slow, but steady progression of the main story.

This book series truly has the makings of a mini-series. And, I definitely would watch it on the TV.

Fans of the author, and those who’ve been reading the series won’t want to miss this read! I’m extremely excited for the fourth, and final book in the series – Home from the Storm – Caleb’s story, which is coming this winter! I can’t wait to read the conclusion and see what happens with Trevor as well as the movie about the tragedy.

Laurel Blount is a new-to-me author with Courage in the Storm, but she won’t be new-to-me for long. Courage in the Storm is the 3rd book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance Series. Courage in the Storm tells the story of Miriam Hochstedler who struggles with fear and anxiety after her parents are murdered right before her eyes and she has not been able to leave the family property since that terrible day. Noticing a bond between Miriam and a wild horse, Breeze, her brother-in-law calls in a favor, asking a horse specialist, Rueben Brenneman, to come and look at Breeze before deciding what to do with the horse. Rueben, being raised Amish, left and only returned to an Amish community to repay a debt. Realizing the key to calming Breeze is through Miriam, Rueben enlists her help. Miriam finds the courage to help Breeze, and in the process her anxiety and fears start to fall away little-by-little. Rueben and Miriam have a shared interest in wanting the best for Breeze and each other as they start having feelings for each other.

Laurel Blount’s reading sweeps you up into the Johns Mill Amish Community and makes you feel like you are a part of them. The characters are vividly written and Ms. Blount’s writing grabbed my attention from page one. I really love Courage in the Storm and the way it depicted anxiety and panic attacks. Personally, I think it’s something that needs to be written more about in Christian/Inspirational Fiction and it needs to be written about authentically like Ms. Blount has done. Being someone who deals with fear and anxiety, Ms. Blount wrote Miriam’s panic attacks spot on. I know because they are very similar to how mine are. I love how the reality of what Miriam goes through is written and I sympathize with her as she fights to be understood and have normalcy in her life. I love the empathy that Rueben possesses that comes through due to his life experiences because it enables Miriam to be gently pushed back into a normalcy of life–giving her a freedom and independence that Miriam thought she had lost forever. Ruben seems to know Miriam so well that he can easily tell when she needs a gentle push do what she thinks is impossible and at the same time knows what is too much at the moment. I love that Miriam’s independence and freedom happens gradually in the book. I love how Miriam and Rueben see the best in each other at all times when no one else can. I love that the theme of courage that is woven through out the pages of Courage in the Storm and the examples of being courageous that are in the book. I love the grit and pace of the book. Despite being the 3rd in a series (and the first book I have read of the series), there were moments I did feel lost in the book, but there was enough back story for me to put most of the pieces together and did not take away from the story as a whole. That’s good for me as a reader because it just makes me want to read what I have missed to satisfy my curiosity (and at this point I want to read the entire Johns Mill Amish Romance series)! If you are looking for a book that deals with different subject matters than usual, but still sticks to the Faith then I highly recommend Courage in the Storm!

I would like to thank NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. Special thanks to Jessica Baker for helping me gather information for this post and for taking a chance on me. All thoughts and opinions are my own. My review is also on my blog Leslie's Library Escape.

Courage in the Storm by Laurel Blount
Book 3 of 3: A Johns Mill Amish Romance
In this powerful Amish romance, an isolated woman and a compassionate man learn that love can build a bridge between their two worlds.
Since witnessing the murder of her beloved parents, Miriam Hochstedler suffers from paralyzing anxiety and a deep-seated fear of the Englisch.
This is Miriam Hochstedler's story.
This is Reuben Brenneman's story.
“Miriam,” Emma called from the table. “I meant to tell you. I picked up the material from Yoder’s for the baby’s quilt. I forgot it today, but I’ll bring it next time.”
“That’s all right,” Miriam reassured her. “Plenty of time yet, and crib quilts don’t take long. Have you decided what pattern you’d like?”
“I want you to decide,” Emma said. “This baby will be nearly as much yours as mine, after all.”
“It’s a shame. Breeze was always stubborn, but before the accident, he was on his way to becoming a gut driving horse. Now . . .” Sam’s deep voice faded out, and Miriam bit her lip.
“There’s that fellow I was telling Joseph about.”
“The one you said was expensive?”
A week later, Reuben Brenneman turned into the driveway the GPS indicated and slowed his truck to a stop. He flipped his wrist to check his battered watch.
He’d made the trip from Louisville in record time. Normally that was a good thing. Not today. For once, he hadn’t been in any particular hurry to get to a job.
He scanned the yard, dread settling over him like a smothering blanket. Nobody was in sight, but this had to be the place Sam Christner had told him about—Joseph Hochstedler’s farm.
I recommend reading.
Courage in the Storm by Laurel Blount is a wonderful well written 5 star book.

“The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” - Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela’s quote describes Courage in The Storm perfectly! What a beautiful read! This is Miriam Hochstedler’s story. It is a testament to courage, determination and learning to trust again. If you read the first two books in the Johns Mill series, you will remember that she is the sibling who witnessed the murder of her parents at the hands of an Englischer. This event traumatized all four Hochstedler siblings in different ways, but Miriam was terrorized beyond words. She can barely leave her house. Everyone is worried about her and, out of love and deep concern, they try to shield her from the world and protect her. But without realizing, they are undermining her self–esteem.

And from the second book, we reunite with Sam Christner’s horse, a spirited animal named Breeze, who was in a horrible buggy accident, and has scars both internal and external. He is now in the stable at the Hochstedler farm, awaiting a decision about what can be done with him. He has become dangerous, uncontrollable and not to be trusted.

Breeze and Miriam have a special connection, they understand each other’s fears. And they both desperately need help. Enter Reuben Brenneman, a farrier and horse trainor, who grew up Plain. For his own painful reasons, though, he has jumped the fence and now wears a short haircut, blue jeans, and drives a pick-up. And returning to the Plain world makes him seriously uncomfortable.

He comes to help Breeze, as a favor to Sam Christner, who helped him in the past. And he soon recognizes that Miriam’s connection to Breeze is the key to working with the horse. But Miriam can barely make it to the barn, let alone work side by side with a man who looks Englisch.

Reuben believes in Miriam and Breeze. He knows Miriam is capable of much more than she is giving herself credit for and, over time, she rises to the challenge. She is determined to be brave, in order to help Breeze. And with Reuben’s gentle but firm encouragement, it becomes vital to her to meet each small benchmark he sets for her.

What a stunning character Reuben is! My gosh, I just fell in love with him. I love how layered and complex he is. He is a character with great integrity who says that he always tries to leave things better than he found them. This story will leave you better than it found you, too!

Miriam and Reuben’s moving, uplifting, emotional story in Courage in the Storm by Laurel Blount, book three in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series, tugs at your heart, holding you hostage until the very last page. This was a story I could not put down, reading it in one day.

Miriam Hochstedler hasn't stepped off her parent's farm since witnessing their murder over a year ago by an Englischer . She's been living with her brother Joseph and his wife Naomi, trying to live day to day without the crippling anxiety. This experience has imprisoned her on the farm and does not allow her to visit her sister, church or anywhere outside of her home farm. It even took her a while to venture into the chicken yard. Reuben Brenneman is a horse trainer who really understands traumatized animals, possibly since he was abused as a child. He left his Amish upbringing and faith years ago to get away from his abusive drunk father. Reuben arrives to retrain Breeze, a gelding, who has been traumatized after an accident and seems to only respond, cautiously, only to Miriam.

It turns out Miriam, Reuben and Breeze are very much alike. Reuben, too, has deep pain, especially as the church, in his community, never worked hard enough to set his father straight. Miriam, Breeze, the horse, and Reuben all need to learn to trust: Miriam in herself, Reuben in G-d, and Breeze in humans. They each benefit from this situation; as healing comes from unlikely and unusual places. The path is not easy, nor is it smooth and contains a bit of heartbreak. This was such a beautiful story of two lost souls finding each other and overcoming the damage that kept them from living a normal life.

Ms. Blount is a wonderful storyteller who creates stories that touch one's heart with great characters full of faith, love, and emotion that reaches deep and is lasting. She wove together the parallels of Miriam Hochstedler and Reuben Brenneman into a moving and heartfelt story. The message of love, faith, and forgiveness stood strong; making this sweet and inspiration read one I could not put down, draw me in, making me forget it was fiction. I highly recommend Courage in the Storm to other readers.

Courage in the Storm by Laurel Blount is a touching tale. It is a delight to return to Johns Mill. I enjoyed getting to know Miriam and her caring family along with Rueben and Breeze. Courage in the Storm is well-written with steady pacing. The characters are realistic and developed. I can tell that the author did her research for this story. She captured the fear a human and animal can feel after a traumatic event. In Courage in the Storm, “Fear always has its reasons. It comes down to experience usually.” I like the analogy of relating a wild animal’s fear of humans to be a learned behavior. I see it with the feral cats in my community. They learn to fear humans from their mother and the other cats. The path to healing is bumpy and slow. You can make progress and then an incident happens that will set them back (the old one step forward and two steps back). Rueben came to help a horse and ended up aiding Miriam as well. In exchange, Miriam helped Ruben with his issues. I liked Johns Mill new bishop, Abram King. He was a breath of fresh air. I like how he handled situations and counseled the members of his community. There is humor in the story (a little levity was needed). I loved hearing about Miriam and her chickens (and the rooster). I had to laugh at the names Miriam gave the chickens. Miriam said that “each chicken has a unique personality.” Courage in the Storm is the third A Johns Mill Amish Romance. It can be read as a standalone, but I highly recommend reading Shelter in the Storm and Strength in the Storm. I like that we get to catch up with the characters from both of those books. I am looking forward to reading Home from the Storm (we get Caleb and Rhoda’s story). One of my favorite phrases from Courage in the Storm is, “. . . asking for Gott’s help to do what’s needed. With Him, we can do many things that seem too hard at first.” Courage in the Storm is a heartfelt tale with a fearful maedel, a frightened horse, a patient trainer, concerned relatives, a benevolent bishop, and a gracious Gott.

Such an emotional read! This is the third John Mills Amish Romance novel and, while I think it could be read as a standalone, it will definitely make more of an impact if you read the books in order.

It’s been a year and a half since the Hochstedler’s parents were brutally murdered and while the siblings are coming to grips with their new reality and moving on in different ways, Miriam, who witnessed the murder, is still paralyzed with fear and anxiety. A fragile bond with a traumatized horse that seems beyond rehabilitation seems destined to bring even more heartache into her life…until itinerant horse whisperer and (former Amish) Reuben Brenneman comes on the scene. Turns out Reuben is not only a horse whisperer but a Miriam whisperer as well.

Honestly, the way their tentative friendship develops in measured steps, and not without set backs, was torturously wonderful to read. The parallels between Blaze and Miriam learning to trust again was so profound and the way both ultimately achieved freedom from fear made for the kind of stand up and cheer ending I love in an emotional story.

Reuben has his own past trauma to deal with, which complicates any hope of a future between these two and adds an extra dimension of angst — because things really get messy before they get better. And can I just say that Laurel Blount is positively brilliant in the way she weaves all the intricate threads of this story together.

Now I’m anxiously anticipating the release of the fourth and final book in this series, Home From the Storm, which will be coming out at the end ot this year….and mercy, it sounds like it’s going to be the kind of blockbuster conclusion this series deserves.

I cannot express how happy I am to be back in Johns Mill for the third book in this series, Courage in the Storm. Author Laurel Blount artfully weaves together the parallels of Miriam Hochstedler and Reuben Brenneman.
You might remember Miriam from books one and two. She is the youngest sister, and the one who witnessed her parents getting killed at the family store. She has been paralyzed by fear since then - especially afraid of Englishers - but has progressed from confining herself to her room to now, in this book, being able to move about the family farm.
Sam’s horse, Breeze (the one in the buggy accident with Sam in book 2) is boarding with Joseph (Miriam’s older brother), Naomi, and Miriam. Since the accident, Breeze is uncontrollable. Sam asks his friend, Reuben (a former Amish who left to go English) to help. It’s their last resort, but they are hopeful a “horse whisperer” like Reuben can do the job.
It turns out Miriam, Reuben and Breeze are very much alike. They all need learn to trust…Miriam in herself, Reuben in Gott (and other Plain folk who DO care), and Breeze in Miriam and Reuben. They all have fears to get over, and Laurel so beautifully intertwines how this happens. It’s not easy, and it’s not without a bit of heartbreak, but they all do have “Courage in the Storm”, and oh, how gloriously their lives shine as they come through it, much like the sun breaking through dark clouds.
I read this in one night. It is a story that begs you NOT to put it down. This book is one that if you don’t have time to read, you make time.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book, but my opinion is entirely my own.

Respect fear or understand it. Two different things. Everyone including animals deal with fear.

I have really enjoyed this series of the John Mill Amish Romances. It is all centered around a shooting that killed an Amish couple and how each family has dealt with that. Miriam Hochstedler is living with her brother Joseph and his wife. Since the shooting she has not gone into town town, or church. She has pretty much stayed on the farm. When she gets triggered, she goes into a melt down that she has been trying to fight. She has seen the same fear that she is dealing with in Breeze. Her brother-in-law's horse. Miriam knows that if Breeze's fear is not dealt with, they will have to put it down. Sam has a friend that jumped the Amish fence Reuben who is a horse whisperer. He knows horses. When he arrives to check out Breeze, he comes across Miriam and he sees first hand the fear that they both are struggling with. He has lived with fear in his young life so he becomes a friend to Miriam. Together, the three face their fears.

I loved how the fear of Breeze, Miriam and even Reuben have an underlying thread. One step at a time. It is not easy facing your fears but it is better than being comfortable in your fears. You miss out living when you live in fear and God's best for you. It takes support of others to face your fears and I loved that part of the story as well. Very relational read. Loved it.

A special thank you to Berkley Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.

Deeply Touched My Heart

Miriam and Breeze were each in need of healing from deep fear caused by traumatic situations. While it appears that Reuben enters the picture only to help Breeze, it becomes evident that Reuben himself is also in need of healing. As Reuben and Miriam work together, they develop a very special relationship. Seeing how honest and open they were with each other and how that honesty impacted their relationship, even when struggles and unexpected events presented themselves, was beautiful. Their story is an absolutely special one that deeply touched my heart.

Author Laurel Blount has once again crafted a story that is so well written and realistic. Once I started reading I did not stop until I got to the very end. At times I felt angst for the characters and what they were each dealing with. Other times I felt hopeful as I watched them experience even the smallest of victories and breakthroughs in their situations. Through everything, love, faith, courage, forgiveness and trust shine through as key elements in the healing process.

The author's research added so much to the realism of the story. I learned much about the trauma of horses, how it affects them and their healing process. I also learned so much about fear and how deeply it's impact can be. These details added an extra touch that took the story to another level. I recommend you read it for yourself to see just how special it is.

Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book. All comments and opinions are voluntary and completely my own.

Miriam Hochstedler, trapped on the family farm by her own fears after the murders of her parents, finds hope and healing when horse trainer Reuben Brenneman walks into her life. Reuben, who swore when he left the Amish life he would never look back, finds himself drawn, not only to the old ways, but to the beautiful woman whose fear, mixed with spunk, pulls his heartstrings like no Englisch girl ever could.

This third book in Laurel Blount’s Johns Mill Series with Berkley takes us back again to the Hochstedler family as we revisit familiar characters and meet new ones. Miriam’s brother and sister have moved on from the tragedy and began lives of their own, while becoming very protective of their sister. Reuben, on the other hand, recognizes that sometimes protection is a roadblock to healing. Miriam finds that pity can sometimes be more paralyzing than fear. She explains this to Reuben with my favorite quote in the book— “When you look at me, you don’t see what happened—or all my troubles. You see what I can be—what I can do.” Together they move forward to a life that Miriam was afraid was out of her reach, and that Reuben finds is all he ever wanted.

I loved everything about this book! The plot, the conflict and of course the characters. With me it’s always about the characters! And the best news ever is that we get to head back to Johns Mill for one more book after this one. I cannot wait!

There are many wonderful characters in this book but there are three that burrowed their way into my heart: Miriam Hochstedler, Reuben Brenneman, and a gelding named Breeze. All three have experienced terror due to the acts of others and all three are in need of love and healing. Courage in the Storm relates their journey of turning fear into peace and loss into gain. It is an emotional story and it's easily one of the best stories that I've read this year!

This is the third book in the Johns Mill Amish Romance series and members of the Hochstedler family still continue their recovery from the tragedy of having their peaceful Amish existence destroyed by a murderer. Miriam's trauma is especially overwhelming, and I was deeply touched by her inability to leave their farm. I know that this often happens but author Laurel Blount paints a powerful picture of Mirry's dilemma. Gifted horse trainer Reuben had grown up living in fear and "fear, he'd found, was at the root of most horse issues. People issues, too." Will the compassion and understanding of this horse whisperer start Mirry on a path to healing? Can she lead him back to the faith of his youth?

This book is a must-read for anyone who craves a lovely story of hope, faith, and romance. Courage in the Storm is fantastic Amish fiction!!

I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. There was no obligation for a positive review. These are my own thoughts.

Laurel Blount has written another great book. Courage in the Storm is truly about courage in all forms....the lack of it, striving to achieve it, and finally achieving great courage through baby steps. My sister is a great fan of horses. Me not so much. They are beautiful animals, just not my thing. That being said, Laurel's depiction of Breeze reacting from such fear and trauma of the accident he had been through had me wanting to reach out and calm him so many times. Reuben, Miriam, and Breeze were all struggling with repressed fear from traumas. I could not put this book down. The characters were so realistic as were the traumas they faced. What a touching story of an Amish man turned Englischer, an Amish woman fearing Englischers, and a very traumatized horse. I loved visiting Johns Mill again and can't wait for Book #4. I do have to say I was not thrilled with Abram, the new bishop, and his not so very well thought out action he took at one point, but in the end it was for the best. I wanted to tell him to "go get another cookie". This is a must read series. Grab book #3 and visit Johns Mill for yourself. You will want to keep coming back. I received an advance copy and am giving my honest opinion.

After reading the first two books in the Johns Mills series, I knew Courage in the Storm would be an emotional read. And wow, Laurel Blount hit me in all the feels.

Mariam’s anxiety and fear is obvious from the beginning of the book, and I felt the panic right along with her. When Reuben enters the picture, his gentle way with the horse Mariam cares for gave me a clue to the kind of man he was—just the kind of guy Mariam needs. He’s kind and caring but understands trauma and the need to push past it. The two characters had such a deep understanding of each other that just made their romance more endearing.

This Amish story is so well researched and paced, while being deeply moving and heart wrenching, that the ending came way too soon for me. There are very difficult things in this book—from the death of Mariam’s parents and the grief that goes with that to the abuse Reuben suffered—but it offers the hope of healing and overcoming our past in an honest and real way. The road isn’t an easy one, but the journey is always worth taking.

Please read this book.

This entire series is simply next level! Once again, the author has tackled a difficult topic with grace and the reader comes out on the other side better for it.

These two main characters, Miriam and Reuben, both deal with forms of anxiety in this novel. Reuben is definitely farther along on his healing journey, however, the amount of stress that being on an Amish farm brings him, speaks to how much his traumatic pasts still affects him.

Miriam and the horse, Breeze, had so much anxiety and many panic attacks that I found it difficult to read about, at times. However, their path to healing necessitated showing how bad things were for them when the book began. I loved the way Reuben was able to work with both Miriam and Breeze. It took a lot of patience and quite a few setbacks, but the author brought everything to a satisfying conclusion. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
