This book revolves around the protagonist Swati Gupta who was nowhere to be found and was vanished after her last visit in Mumbai. She was the wife of Deepak Bhide who asked his old friend to find his wife at any cost. Digyen Burmrah was a forensic auditor and corporate spy and he investigates the company, Globosoft where both Swati and Deepak worked and found some unbelievable and shocking truth.
This book is based on true events involving the Jain Hawala Diaries case of 1991 and another case, involving the huge amount of cash and gold discovered from an income tax raid in 2018 in Chennai.

Being a chartered accountant (CA) myself, I was instantly attracted to read this book based on the synopsis.
The protagonist is also a CA and also a forensic auditor. He had different ethics in a good manner. He could be disloyal to his employer but could not go opposite his morals. Yes, we need more such people in this selfish world where people has forgotten basic humanity.
Then, he got involved in a case where the wife of his college mate was vanished in air and no-one knew anything. Also, Police had also refused to file the complaint.
As the story moved, there were many dirty secrets of many people came in picture but I was doubtful what happened to the main culprit and the author did not disappoint with the climax. I was on the edge of my seat at the end to know what happened. I love this feeling.
I would appreciate the author to write such an extraordinary story. I really enjoyed it thoroughly. It had all wow factors like drama, adventure, suspense, politics, terrorism, etc. The language was quite easy as the author has tried to explain some concepts. I loved the protagonist and how he always listened to his heart. If you like a good thriller with money laundering and some drama, just go for it! Definitely recommended!

When I picked up this book, I had no idea as to what the title meant but after going through the book, I got to know quite a lot about the Hawala system, something that was new for me. For one, this was a crisp and easy mystery read that was engaging and enjoyable. The language is simple and can be understood by all easily.
There are a handful of characters in the story who play key roles in bringing all the threads together. In the beginning, I was a bit confused about the plotline but it became clearer to me in the second half of the book. The climax was surprising for me as I had no idea that this could be a possibility and I liked that for me. What made this story even more intriguing is the fact that this is actually based on true stories.
Overall, it was a good read. Mystery lovers and those looking for a simple yet interesting read can surely give this book a try.

The Hawala Agent by Smarak Swain is a book based on true events. The Hawala System, an informal way of money transfer especially across borders. This leads to a loss for the IT department as the conversion of cash is from black to white which is obtained by illegal and unlawful methods. The book is based on this system of money laundering method.
The author has tried to make it simple for the readers to understand. The gripping plot is well planned with justified characters and a language that is easy to follow. The narration is smooth. Thought the it started off slowly, the pace increases as the story progresses.
The author has maintained the suspense until the unpredictable climax at the end. The glossary for acronyms used in the book , has been provided at the end for the reader's reference. I found it very helpful. Also the Tamil accent used in the book was enjoyable.

The title and the cover page of this Book barely imply the story frame. This novel is about a vice spy who is involved to search for his friend's wife.
Based on true events this novel has revealed a lot of mysteries of the spy as well as hawala agents, which makes me feel OH!!!! This story moves like a detective novel. How the protagonist Digyen Burmah gives the conclusion to all the contradictions in his way of searching his friend's wife Swati Gupta. As a forensic auditor and a corporate spy, Digyen's character is apt to his role. The author dramatically increases the risk and the thrilling of the story to hook the readers till the end.
Language is rational. The plot is enthralling. Characters are well developed. The story frame is visually moving in the reader's mind while reading

The Hawala Agent by Smarak Swain is a book based on true events. The story is a combination two cases from different years. It focuses on the protagonist, Digyen Burmah, who is a forensic auditor and corporate spy. One day his friend Deepak Bhide approached him and told him to find his wife who appeared from nowhere and then vanished from his life too after marriage.
When Digyen digs into the case more and more. He found out this is not about Bhide's wife but a more deep mystery which has so many strings attached to it.
The story is very much inspired from real life income tax raids and hawala cases. This novel has a very thrilling and full of mystery storyline.

💰 Not a regular crime thriller you read! Its written in a different way where apart from the plot, the reader will be gaining knowledge about taxes, hawala and much more. Some terms are quite new to me. I would recommend this book for people with more maturity or 20+ to understand certain terms.
💰 Back to the plot, it is well constructed and quite suspenseful. The flow of the plot to a different concept was so smooth and good to read. I do feel some logic missing here and there(very minor though). As a personal opinion, I feel really bad why muslims are always targetted in national crimes.

Hawala is an informal method of transferring money without any physical money actually moving. It is described as a "money transfer without money movement." Another definition is simply "trust." Hawala is used today as an alternative remittance channel that exists outside of traditional banking systems.
Hawala is illegal if the proceeds from such transactions are used for money laundering.
I'm sure most of the readers are unaware about the Hawala system just like me.
This book gave me exposure for sure.
The Author before jumping into the story has made the aspects clear so that the reader can understand the plot well and that was very helpful.
I'm truly fan of Non-Fictions plus crime shows, for that reason this book secured a place in my bookshelf.
The introduction about the story is mentioned in the blurb is exactly right without a spoiler yet the readers will know what to expect.
The story seems normal in the beginning but as it unfolds, it starts getting complex with multiple layers that ensures a gripping nail biting plot as promised.
This book demands it's own time as it is not a kind of book that you should read to pass the time.
But if you are a reader who like engaging as well as challenging plots then this is suitable book.
It's impressive how the Author has narrated the storyline in simple terms.
After reading this book, i was too curious to know those cases, and i carried on with my research.
This book stayed with me even when i was done with it.

“It is easy to draw an ethical line, but difficult to stand by it”.

Digyen Burmah, the main protagonist of the story finds himself unemployed at the start of the novel The Hawala Agent, as he priorities moral ethics more than the business code. A very capable forensic auditor and corporate spy, which we get to experience first hand as the story unfolds, he is currently seen to be residing in Mumbai passing away his time. His current state of affairs makes him take a case for a college friend. The prima facie of the case is conveyed to be of kidnapping of his friend’s wife. However when Burmah executes his job of a corporate spy, he finds things to be the complete reverse of what is portrayed. Rather than the wife being the victim, she is found to be more of the villain in the story. By duping her innocent husband, she plans a heist on his office. Bhide, the husband, is perceived as an ardent lover, who throughout the story cant believe his wife would ever cheat on him. But what really is the case? Is it so easy to find out? Are the characters what they really seem to be?
A very well written novel by Smarak Swain detailing on subjects like Hawala, espionage, human trafficking and other illegal activities of the leading MNCs and executives. The author has written an informative piece on the systems of money trading in India, however ensuring that the readers are well connected to the novel and the pace maintained.

Being 185 Pages long, the overall theme of the book remains to be centered around the aspects of greed and power hunger. The overall storyline of the book focuses on the character of Digyen Burmah who is a forensic auditor and a corporate spy by profession and as the events unfold it turns out that his friend’s wife is missing and now she needs to be found out. As we go further, there are other entities which are also looking for her and there the intentions vary for the latter is afraid of the secrets that may spread like wildfire. The first chapter is titled “The Mystery of Missing wife” which begins with the main character and his interaction with Nidhi Arora and at the same time the character of Deepak Bhide materializes and he needs to find out his wife, however Digyen and Deepak have never been friends owing to the mean attitude they had for each other in their youth. As the reader goes further, each of the chapter moves at a decent pace with mystery element being truly constant throughout.
The writing style of the book has been kept simple and engaging. Additionally, the writing style has amusing moments pertaining to the contemporary time as the usage of #Metoo which adds to the engaging nature of the book and when summed with the inherent lack of complexity of the text makes this book a must read for anyone willing to go for a thrilling read with a sense of reality.

The first half of the book was too boring to read... Explaining details of Bhide's story, explaining the hawala system, explaining black money,explaining Globosoft chip technology...

The real nail-biting thriller story for me started from the chapter of confrontation and the mystery was still kept mystery at the very end of the book.Also The heavy Tamil accent was something I enjoyed.The best things about the book are
1) it's simple and un-ambiguous language.

3) The baffling mystery of the Diaries that attracts you to read more and more.
At some point, for some reason I suspected Nidhi, may be she was the demoness, may be not.

But I think that confusion made it more interesting to read, although I hated how the book started up, it could have been better, better without Amo and Tudo. But the reason for this start will be realised only after you read it off!

I haven't. I have seen in few films but the lucidity showcased here for the subjects put forth has struck me with consciousness. This small brain of ours is capable of doing unbelievable fiddles besides wonders.
Burmah, was appointed by his friend, Deepak Bhide to find his missing wife, Swati Gupta. Burmah, after having lost his job, decides to take this up as he is left with no other choice. But as the investigation goes on, he unravels fraudulent acts that tend to happen everywhere that is like a network.
Will he find Swati?
Will he do the right thing or stick to his professionalism?
Okay!! I'm so awestruck while reading the story coz, so many facts were unearthed and this story being written based on true events, led me to unknown operations happening in this era of technology. Starting off as a thriller, it turned out to be an intriguing suspense story. Few of the terms were difficult to comprehend but, I eventually got carried away by the plot. The author has weaved the story with his experiences and knowledge very well. The progressive narration kept me engaged all the while and the twists are unimaginable. But finally, I have got to know something I'm not aware of. The Acknowledgements in the book gives us an idea of the story. If you are quite inquisitive of suspense stories imparting knowledge and consciousness, then you shouldn't miss this one for sure!!

💸The concept of this book is really informative with strong explanation about Hawala system and its powerful execution. This gives a lot of information that i had no clue about in general. It's nice when you learn about something from the books.

Not only the husband is desperate to find his wife, her Company is also searching for her. What could have happened? With all the mystery, suspense and full of corporate conspiracies, if you really want to know more about Hawala, this book will bring an interest.

Informative as well full of suspense.

Well I too didn't knew about it before. It's the first time I have read something about Hawala. This book revolves around "Hawala system" which is quite a new topic to me.
Digyen Burmah is a forensic auditor and corporate spy. His old friend, Mr Bhide's wife get missing out of blue during an official tour. Mr Bhide ask Mr Digyen for his help in finding his wife. As Digyen investigates the case, he uncovers so many things related to shady deals in tax havens, transactions with hawala agents, and other shocking things.
The book is just okay near some 40-50 pages but the real thrill starts after it which will make you turn pages after pages and get engrossed in solving the mystery.
All the characters in the novel is well potrayed especially the main focus was on main protagonist Digyen Burmah, who is shown smart and intelligence.

This fast moving thriller fiction kept me turning the page. Great characters and plot line. Its a moderate to read can be completed in a single day. The story has the elements like Money laundering, investigation spy, corporate world, election tricks, etc. The story is gleaned from the real ancient. The story has been revolved around our main protagonist Digyen Burmah,. Who recently has been out of his work. He is a corporate spy. He is struggling hard to get into the new work but unfortunately he is unable to get. One of his old friend seeks his help as her wife was missing from the official tour. Digyen took the charge and starts the investigation. In the mean while he exhumed some of the connections with the hawala agents and channeling the payments which would be used for influencing elections.
What will happen next in the story? Will he able to find his friend wife? Is the missing woman being also a part of the scam? Read the book to unfold the complete plot of the story?

After being fired from a company he worked for before, Digyen had plenty of free time. So when an old friend approaches him to find his missing wife, Digyen takes up his case. Upon investigating Digyen finds out that the company where his old friend works is involved in some shady business to transport money across borders.
What started as a mere 'find the missing wife' runs deep into unearthing laundered money, shady deals in tax havens, business with hawala Agents etc.
Based on true events The Hawala Agent throws light on how money is transported across borders without physically moving it. It also highlights the activities the money is being used for. And how women are exploited alongside ( women trafficking ). The author has weaved an amazing story around the hawala system. Right from the start the book held my attention. It has all the elements of a good spy thriller....Digyen Burmah is a badass spy. I loved knowing how this entire system of money laundering through hawala system works.
The writing style is so so good....there is no strain and the flow is silky smooth. Characters sound real and convincing.

Hawala is a term I was vaguely familiar with that too because of Bollywood action movies. The book provided a description outlook of the network, its origin, and how it works practically in real-life scenarios.

When Digyen started looking into her disappearance, shady things started to be unearthed about the company and the mystery of it all. Will he be able to find her? What is the larger conspiracy and what cost will he pay after finding himself in the middle of a large conspiracy?
The language is pretty lucid and the fast-paced narration keeps the momentum of the story going. Every few chapters unravel a new twist in the story. It was a very well-written book. I liked how there weren't many filler characters and each character had a role to play in the storyline. I like the character build-up of the lead protagonist and it was a whole mystery surrounding it and slowly unruffled in the very end.
I love reading thriller books and I kind of got the climax right this time so I didn't get the euphoria you get when you find the mystery of it all. Otherwise, a good mystery thriller fiction to enjoy. It was a good mix of corporate affairs and pulling a money heist from the finance extremists.

With a gripping story and interesting characters the author has done a fantastic job of informing the readers on how the Hawala system works and makes the readers hooked on the book by the writing style and slangs used in the book. The concept throughout the book is lucid for the readers to understand easily and the flow is smooth so is the pace for it to captivate everyone who reads it. A riveting tale that is based on true evens find out more by grabbing your copy today!!!

When Digyen digs into the case more and more. He found out this is not about Bhide's wife but a more deep mystery which has so many strings attached to it.
I picked up the book after reading the blurb which is quite intriguing. Before this I really don't know about Hawala cases. In the first half of the story there is introduction about it. And the second half is more about the mystery about the company and the best part is the suspense continued till the last. When I doubt that she would be the one but in a moment there is another one to be suspected. Language is easy to comprehend. A quick read to grab. As It's based on true events gives a little knowledge about the real world. Being working as a revenue officer he has a rich knowledge which shows the detailed meticulous research by the author @smarakswain.

The book is based on true events and focuses on two cases. Hawala is a term that I’ve heard from childhood on the news channels but honestly had no idea what it meant. The book gives you a clear picture what it is.
Digyen Burmah is the protagonist who is fired from his job, but is entrusted by his friend Deepak Bhide to find his wife. Uncovers a larger conspiracy when he tried to find her and will he succeed in rescuing her and how does he find the way out especially being in middle of the conspiracy.
Tamil being mother tongue some of the inferences were made easier for me to understand. The story also has a lot of secrets being uncovered but the author never failed to keep you at the edge for climax. Isn’t that what we want when we read an interesting plot?
Politics, terror, suspense were all part of this read and handled gracefully by the author. The writing is simple and doesn’t involve complex terms for you to feel difficult. A captivating read that the author makes it difficult for you to even take a guess on what happened to the friend’s wife.
