Psychic Ryley St. James has a million problems, but a haunted house isn’t one of them.
Until now.
When a woman is attacked in a haunted house and sent to the hospital fighting for her life, her powerful fiancé blackmails Ryley into uncovering the deadly secrets hidden on the property.
The house reeks of ill warnings and bad tidings. This isn’t what Ryley calls a typical haunting. It’s an infestation, and the evil spirit residing inside refuses to cooperate.
Now she’ll have to risk her life to save her brother’s career, her multi-million-dollar foundation, and her new unorthodox family.
She might die trying, but failure and losing it all is not an option.
Grave Mistake By Kate Allenton Book 2 in the series, and it's just as good as book #1! Plenty of ghosts, more than one psychic in this book, mysteries, and suspense. Really enjoy the unique characters and fun plot with its many subplots. Great ending.
LOVED this book as much as the first. Riley St. James is such a intriguing character. She not only now runs a multi-million dollar foundation, she also can see and speak to ghost and help them move on. During this book we find out she may have some more hidden paranormal talents and I cant wait to see her at her full potential. Another trait she has I love is her dry humor that just has you laughing out loud.
So many new characters were introduced that look to change the trajectory of Riley's future. I hope that is explored more. Cant wait for the next book.
Man oh man this author can weave a web. I love how fast paced and smooth her stories are. I also love the witty, snarky banter between characters. Riley is wicked cool. I have been waiting for this book and it did not disappoint.
I highly recommend if you love fast past mystery with a kick of paranormal! This author is AMAZING!
Grave Mistake, the second book in the Lost Souls Society series, is a great paranormal read. When psychic Ryley St. James is ordered by a local judge to clear his house, she learns that the ghosts are not the only thing that is evil. Her life, her foundation, and her brother’s career are all on the line when the judge makes it clear he will ruin it all if she doesn’t come through. Great characters and storyline make this another solid story from Kate Allenton.
It's so good to read about Ryley St. James again. I love her wit, sarcasm, her no bs attitude--she's a great character. She can see dead people and attends funerals to touch the bodies and send their trapped spirits to the light. Only applicable if the spirit is actually trapped. She has a ghost that follows her around and the conversations she has with Stretch are sometimes downright funny.
In this installment of the series, she's up against a crooked judge who has threatened her brother's cases (Tucker is an attorney) if she can't cleanse this judge's house of some bad spirits. Judge Henley told her if she can't get rid of the spirits in this house, he will call her out as a fraud and that will bring into question any case she'd helped her brother with and probably the police, too. It didn't take her long to figure out that there was more to this house than met the eye, but she had to stick it out for the sake of Tucker and the innocent people who could end up in jail.
We were introduced to some new characters who have some powers of their own. Keller and Jenna, the latter telling Ryley that they were going to be great friends. Ryley doesn't think she has friends, but after reading two books in this series, I beg to differ. What makes Keller and Jenna different is they are FBI and they have a team they work with.
This made me wonder if maybe the FBI really does have an underground team that deals with the paranormal, kind of like Fox Mulder and Dana Scully on the X-Files. It's off the radar. Nobody wants to admit it exists. They deal with cases that are unexplained. Why not?
I do wish there had been more descriptions of the characters, but the story was so great, it didn't bother me all that much. It's seems to be trend anymore among many authors. I don't care for it, but it is what it is. I can't make that happen. The story was filled with edge-of-your-seat tension, a few surprises, and a fantastic ending. I would've had it read in a day, if I hadn't had to go to work.
I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
*I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily left a review.
Book two picks up a couple of months after book one, and it builds upon the stories and relationships established in that book… make sure you’ve read that one first! (It’s well worth it). Psychic Riley St. James, used to be the weird girl who went to funerals. Now she is the one in charge of the Wilson Foundation, and owner of all that came with it. Including the troubles that always seem to find her; this time, it’s a blackmailing owner of a haunted house, who wants Riley to make it safe for occupancy. With an attractive (but taken) FBI agent shadowing her everywhere, and a new ghost haunting her steps, Riley finds herself working against time to clear up two ghostly mysteries at once- and one of them could be deadly.
There are several new characters that are introduced in this story; although only one is present for the majority of the book! They’re a particularly interesting bunch, that I hope we get to see more from in the future. For the most part, Riley is still trying to come to terms with her new circumstances, and Oscar is proving to be a very interesting friend. He also resembles Batman’s butler Alfred in my mind, which is a little amusing because he’s not really written that way. Although we do see Crews and Bane from the first book, they take a decidedly back seat to this story, and aren’t as important as the FBI Agent Killian. No romance for Riley as yet, and no further developments on the loose ends that were left after book one. Not that it’s a bad thing; there’s a lot of action and ghostly misadventures, some intriguing new developments, as well as a couple of mysteries that Riley helps solve. It’s a well told tale, filled with enjoyable characters and a riveting storyline that’s sure to keep the reader engaged.
Grave Mistake - Lost Souls Society Book 2 by Kate Allenton.
At the end of book 1, we left psychic Ryley St. James trying to figure out how to fit her new circumstances into her current lifestyle. In book 2, the circle of people around Ryley keeps expanding, secrets are revealed, mysteries solved and new characters with interesting abilities are introduced. I liked the interactions between the various characters and look forward to more books in this series. The books are meant to be read in order. A great read.
Here is the Blurb from the back of the book: Psychic Ryley St.
Oooh I liked this one even better than the first one! Ryley is making waves and new friends, some of which are special like she is. In fact, we even get a mind reading witch thrown in. It is starting to feel like her special power to see ghosts isn't as cool what w so many others carrying the ability but it sounds like her ability to make them cross over is still unique to her. This book centered around her being blackmailed in to ridding a haunted house of its infestation. What comes out of that is a diabolical character and well, some kind of evil entity that has actually been contained within the old house by someone before her. she solves a few mysteries that were presented but unfortunately there remains questions and therefore a cliffhanger. Ill be reading the next book to see if they get answered. Actually, a lot hasn't been answered yet even from the first book. I enjoyed all the new characters. They should make the next book interesting.
Ryley St. James was in the midst of "crashing" a funeral when she was hauled down to the police station. While there, her brother's career is threatened by a judge so she is forced to take on a job she doesn't want. Ryley has a jaded past that, along with her paranormal abilities, keeps life interesting. She is also blessed with some very helpful friends and acquaintances.
I never give a plot or story away, just give a little taste of what the story is about but you will not be disappointed in this gem. It is a fast read....not because it's short (it isn't)....but because it is hard to put down. It draws you in immediately and you'll be unable to put it down until the last word. Enjoy!
Rylie is back! A new ghost shows up that Rylie is trying to help, and a mystery surrounding her death turns into way more than that. A creepy old house with a lot of mysteries attached to it and maybe something more evil. To top that off Rylie is being blackmailed into helping someone who’s quite unscrupulous. Add to the mix the FBI, Rylie is trying to juggle all of this and help the ghost to cross over. This was hard to put down! So much going on, I couldn’t stop reading because I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next! I am looking forward to reading more in this series!
Yeah, I think I’m done with this series. The main storyline was fine but the story started out with such an asshole bad guy that I became irked and couldn’t really settle into the story. And this one also felt like a cross-over storyline with . Throw in the ‘new book, new hot (potential love interest) guy’ trend that seems to be developing and I’m out. I hate the rotating love interest trope almost as much as I hate the love triangle trope. I’m glad I read Book 2 but I have no interest in Book 3.
Grave Mistake is the 2nd book in The Lost Souls series by Kate Allenton and it did not disappoint! This book really showcases Ryley’s abilities and touch on those of a unique FBI team that deals with cases with “extra” dimensions to them. While romance was hinted at, it was mostly a paranormal mystery that was so good, I can’t wait for Grave Shelter (book 3) so that we can meet more of this unique team!
Wow. I wasn't sure if she could top book one, but I think she just might have done that. This was unputdownable! Seriously, non-stop moving pieces with mysteries and intrigue all over the place. I love the characters and the storylines. This was excellent. Seriously, read this series! I'm about jump into book three and it's been less than 36 hours since I started book one. (No, I haven't slept much.) So, what I'm saying is: Pick up book one and enjoy the ride!
Ms. Allentown, I absolutely love Ryley! She offers no excuses, no apologies, and keeps riding along the grey. Frankly, I want to be her when I grow up! I cannot wait for book 3, JULY! Ungh! I am certain Book 3 will not be the end... Hint... More, please of this amazing young woman!
Not a writer but I read a lot. This series has been the best I've read in a while. I'm not bored with the details. She uses her talents throughout the book. Even love Oscar, her brother. Everyone has a purpose it's great. I'm bummed only 1 more to go.
It is often very difficult to understand who is speaking because the author doesn’t specifically attribute it to a character. This made it very difficult to follow some parts. Overall it was an interesting story. I am wishing there was more ghost activity though.
Aside from a teensy tiny plot hole that we're just going to ignore la la la, this was an enjoyable read. I like the MC's personality and the way she interacts with both people and ghosts. Would be nice if she realized she's stupid wealthy and take advantage of her resources though. Good mystery, neat side characters. Will definitely continue the series.
I loved this book as s much as the first one. It took a little bit longer reading this c one. I love Ruley's character. She is so straightforward that she pisses people off and ready to take any of them arguing or forwarding level. BAD. They're back from my trip with my s I deternibned
This 2nd book in the series was more intense than the 1st. This book has intense suspense, great world-building, found-family, and just enough sexual tension for me to wonder if Ryley will choose. Also, the introduction of certain characters in this book has me wondering if this is a crossover or if there will be a future series in the works. Ok.....Next!
I love this series! How can you not love Ryley St. James with her sharp witty responses and quirky humor? Don’t get me wrong, there were a few close encounters but she didn’t join the afterlife. She helped move some spirits move on and held up her promise to others. Plus she made some new friends who understand her gift and connection with the dead.
So much fun and so many surprises! I love our imperfect Riley and the people she has come to trust. Bad guys are good, good people we are to trust are plain evil.... very scary! I love our FBI group who have ghost guessing skills to push our story along, like adding salt to your fries, so much more interesting.
Love the story , the characters and the laughter ! Can't wait for the third book ! I read my favorite books over and over again , so I will be ready for the next installment !
This seems like such a new direction for Kate Allenton, a little darker and a lot more mystery. And after solving a few mysteries in this book, her new friends have raised even more mysteries….all about what other abilities the main character has. Can’t wait for book 3!
This series is great! She helps the good without always doing the “right” thing. Her friends aren’t conventional and she is always getting into something as she helps others out! Can’t wait for the next book
This is one of the best books I have read in a LONG time! Love Ryley and her merry band of supporters. Just the right amount of spooky, mystery, and comedy. Love the strong female character:). Bring on more Ryley!
