Alecky Blythe's engrossing verbatim play tells the stories of a generation. Created from five years of interviews with twelve young people from across the UK, Our Generation is a captivating portrait of their teenage years as they journey into adulthood. Often too extraordinary to be fiction, this funny and moving play is for anyone who is – or has ever been – a teenager.
It was co-produced by the National Theatre, London, and Chichester Festival Theatre in 2022, directed by Daniel Evans.
a very interesting insight into our generation (shockingly). it’s quite a tricky one to read because there are so many characters but such a clever concept
A very complicated read, but it would make a great (still complicated) stage production. This is a real peek behind the curtain into the lives of 12 different young people, over a 5-year period. For some of them, you have no more idea of who they are or what they will do at the end of the performance as you did at the start. With others, the cracks are definitely starting to show. And it's just their life. This is very clever craft, and arguably very important as well. Probably only works as a play. But it's why we need plays.
This play ends in the same way the play criticises and comments on COVID-19. Abruptly and with the rug pulled out from under you.
The through lines are so difficult to follow with no catharsis at the end. There are interesting perspectives that should be valued, but it's very disjointed in it's delivery.
