Growing up during World War Two was a nightmare for all involved, but for those whose country Hitler’s troops marched through, the nightmare was a grim reality. “My Long-Lost Footsteps” is by Anneliese Wondratschek, who was born and grew up in Czechoslovakia, in the area known as the Sudentenland. Her childhood, friendships and family were disrupted when Hitler invaded their country. Friends turned against friends, neighbors turned against neighbors, and everywhere families were destroyed. While the prospect of fleeing the country seemed frightening, the idea of staying was even more horrific. Even after Hitler was defeated, life was hard, food was scarce, and spirits were low. Great hardship forced Anneliese and her family to work long, hard hours for very little pay. Hoping for security, Anneliese entered a loveless marriage that resulted in more heartache, but also produced a lovely baby girl. Only years later, after meeting and marrying an American soldier, did Anneliese find happiness. Follow Anneliese Wondratschek’s long and treacherous journey in this, her story, “My Long-Lost Footsteps”.
