Frost Industries #1

When It Raynes

Rate this book
Frost Industries was born from the blood of our enemies, forging the way for our family to walk the fine line between high society and the Chicago underworld.

I’ve lived in the darkness almost as long as I can remember, so it made sense when I stepped into my role of Enforcer. I take care of problems, no matter the stains they leave on what used to be my soul.

Until I met Emerson.

Her light shines so bright it penetrates through my cold, black heart.

I shouldn’t want her, shouldn't muddy her with the darkness, but the moment I met her, she consumed me, and when she’s under threat from our enemy, I claim her as my own.

But how could she ever love a monster like me?

New author to me and It was pretty good!!

Emerson is drowning in debt thanks to a crummy ex who ranked up money like it was candy. So girl is working 3 jobs to pay it off. Plus her center for kids is almost closed down since no money or donation aren't coming in. Enter Rayne a ex con and part of a family that own the streets and other things is voluntaring at the center but he's sprung over Emerson, he's doing things like spending more time there finding more info about her and why she's tired all the time. They are such a cute couple I love how he was already into her and wanted to keep her safe and make sure her health was good. I love Rayne he was a good book boyfriend caring, delicious and gives you that good good. Emerson......it took me awhile to warm up to her I got tired of Emersons pull away always questioning Rayne like over and over again he killed a man for you, worshiped you and you still ask the same question girl...also wanted to go back to the club your boss bruised your wrist? And gave you the creeps.. only thing I liked about her was the center.

Om drama (ex and the bad guy), no cheating, Drama, slight secondary character, sexy times, no virgins

If you are looking for a bit dark mafia romance with a good story and a decent amount of spice to introduce yourself to the genre, then… this book is for you.

I really had high hopes for this book since the cover and blurb grabbed my attention. I am torn in giving this book a review. On the one hand I really enjoyed the story and characters, but on the other the writing was not my style and there were one to many incorrect words used for my liking. I love having a peek into the characters inner thoughts, but when one character says something, and it takes a page of inner monologue or thoughts to get a response I find myself getting annoyed. I’m sure a bit of editing would make for more seamless reading experience. I did enjoy the characters and the connection they shared. Although I would not characterize this book as dark, it really is up for debate what exactly is dark.

Mistakes aside I enjoyed the story enough to give the second book of the series a chance once it comes out. A strong 3.75- star rating. Good but not great.

This is an interesting one..

This book is really recommended in the FB groups I am in. Normally, feel like it should have the things that I like.. buuut it frustrated me to no end!

*There was so much telling no showing!
* Heroine is supposed to be tough, independent women, who then is submissive for hero and enjoys it. I mean fine, but she never was this tough independent women! Like based on her actions she just struggled to live and made TSTL decisions. Just saying she is somebody without showing doesn't convince me!
* the s€x scenes...
Here, H supposedly uses s€x and spanking as punishment.. but it was really so distasteful for me, like oh she did something I didn't like, I am not gonna let her come and will just spank her cause that's what I am gonna do. Dunno but the reasoning felt like she is some 18 year old nice and controllable young adult. There was no depth behind it.

I would add that I loved Twist Me series by A.Zaires (!). Just for comparison, since it's 100% more brutal yet I loved it, cause it had depth and context to those actions.

*the H... Again we are told how dangerous he is - not shown. We are told he is gonna protect her, shocker he doesn't. He keeps thinking how he was with 100s women's but h is the only one he felt like this. Okay, so saying it once or twice - I get it. But he always kept thinking it. And why? I didn't get why!
*the conclusion scene for when she is kidnapped makes no sense.
*then... the side characters. H's friend broke H's sisters heart to protect her. To not bring her into mafia world. But she already is cause their whole family is part of it? Like come on!!!

Anyway, surprisingly, this book really frustrated me.

I've read my fair share of dark, mafia, morally grey, and bdsm stories and I have a personal rule about never leaving a book unfinished however I could not finish this book. This story came to me highly recommended and seeing some of the reviews for this story honestly makes me worry for woman today. It is one thing for a man to take care of and protect a woman, it is a completely different thing for a man to decide a woman is his and refuse to let her have any say. He says on multiple occasions how he will squash all her independence and individuality, that she will have no say in anything and that she just has to accept it. She even says at one point how he literally railroads her during conversations until she just gives in. This book was toxic, creepy, slightly rapey and badly portrays bdsm on top of it. This story was not okay for so many reasons.

Thankyou to the author for reaching out and sending me this arc
This was a really fast and enjoyable read. It’s a insta love/obsession book between Emerson and Rayne. Emerson and her dad run/own a youth centre which she’s very passionate about at Raybe ends up volunteering there and is instantly enthralled by her. Rayne is the enforcer for his brothers mob/mafia. Raynes family are really involved in the book which I loved and I’m pretty sure they’re getting their own stories which I’m excited for especially storm. The romance is definitely the driving force in this book. The back and forth between the two mc were abit annoying at times but apart from that I liked the book.

Wow, what a cliffhanger 😧

The first 50% of this was amazing! I loved Rayne’s obsession with Emerson and their overall connection. Rayne’s family is so sweet and welcoming.

The final 50% was kind of ridiculous in my opinion.

Great possessive mafia book.

Rating: 4.5 ⭐️
Spice: 3/5 🌶️
Tropes: mafia, possessive and morally grey MMC, mine

Honestly, I haven’t read a really good book in a while until this one. The “hero” is deliciously dark, morally grey, and so possessive that it is *chef’s kiss* 🤌. And our heroine is such a beautifully kind hearted person who’s down on her luck after her ex drowns her in debt. I love this series. So hard to find mafia romance that isn’t arranged marriage. And the hero is just so in love with Emerson that it’s just so cute.

Rayne, the MMC, is an enforcer for his mafia family and falls head over heels for sweet Emerson, who works at a children’s youth center. The story follows their romance, Emerson dealing with Rayne’s possessiveness, and a rival mafia dom who sets his sights on Emerson.

The 🌶️is good. Rayne is a dirty talker who loves to give a good 🍑👋.

Triggers: two instances of SA on page (not full rape, but it’s attempted)

When It Raynes is the first book in the Frost Industries series and features Rayne and Emerson. Rayne is an enforcer for his mafia family and when he lays eyes on the sweet children's youth center director, Emerson, he is done for. Nothing will get in his way of claiming and keeping his girl. Not even her.

“Don’t hide from me, Emerson. Don’t ever hide from me. I want all of you, and nothing you do or say is going to change that.”

Action packed with a domineering alpha male and a fierce heroine, this story just hit all the right notes for me in terms of story and heat. Rayne was delicious and Emerson was cute. I loved the story and their romance.

I enjoyed the first half of the book.
Heroine, Emerson, had an ex that placed her debt. He opened credit cards and other loans under her name.
Hero, Rayne, has to complete community service at the center arm’s father runs.
They meet, the hero falls for the Em, and he wants to protect her.
Em works at a club that is run by a bad guy that has a long history with Rayne. So there is that drama. Nothing I did not read a hundred times before.

The story was okay at first, but then it became too much.
It was too instant and I am not sure why Rayne fell for Em except she was a red-head.
Sure she helps with the community center, but I never got the vibe that she was this amazing person.

She was not innocent like Rayne perceived her. She had some history. She was NOT a Mary-Sue character. She had her share of ex-boyfriends and one-night stands. I feel at times she did things out of obligation.

She dated her ex which was a drug user. She did not make wise choices when it came to men.
She was an average heroine. Bland.
Rayne calling Em “sweet girl” every other paragraph which got on my nerves. What made her sweet?!?!
The books needs an editor to check for spelling errors.

Rayne’s family was amazing.
Rayne was an OTT alpha if you like that a the story. I just do not understand why with her.

Once this couple got together, the story ended and started on the whole criminal aspect. You may like that.
The switch in POVs was too frequent.

Insta obsession / Insta love
Mafia romance
Lots of spice / BDSM

🛑Does have multiple sexual assault scenes

Rayne is obsessed and very protective of our heroine Emerson. Very cute couple- lots of spice.
Rayne was a dominant with BDSM and lots of praise.

I didn’t feel it had to go on as long as it did, and it ends on a cliffhanger. Not for our couple but my guess for the next couple in the book.

I found this author via Instagram when I came across someone promoting When It Raynes. Mafia romance is my guilty pleasure, so I immediately went and read some of her previous works, and when I found how compelling Fyre’s writing style was I headed straight to the ARC application form and was lucky enough to be gifted one!

When It Raynes has so many of my favourite tropes.

Instant Attraction
He Falls First
Possessive Alpha Male
Praise Kink

As well as this the balance of mafia violence to romance was executed well. I look for a good dose of the drama and angst that comes with the mafia plot, and Fyre does a fantastic job of ensuring that side of a mafia romance is included.

I will say that I think the ending felt a little bit rushed compared to the steady pacing of the first chunk of the book, but overall this was a fantastic mafia romance. I can’t wait to see where things go from here for the rest of the Frost Industries books!

I never write reviews, but this book was irritating from start to finish.

The MMC immediately falls in love and then becomes an absolute psycho taking away every ounce of freedom or choice from the woman he is now irrationally in love with. She didn't fall in love or have a desire to move in with him, but she was told too, so of course she complies... and don't get me started on the chapter long hissy fit because her now super rich master paid off all of her debts or how he needs to follow her around the house to protect her (gag) This book could have been so good and had all the tropes I genuinely like, just done so very bad.

The heroine had an ex-boyfriend who is a drug addict. He stole her identity and opened up six credit cards and a student loan in her name and maxed them out. She now owes $70,000 and is working 3 jobs trying to pay it off.

Yet she never reported the ex to the police for identity theft. All she says is she can't file bankruptcy because she might go to medical school and then she wouldn't get in.

The hero finds out her ex asked her for more money and bruised her. So hero beats up the ex. That's it. Doesn't kill him, doesn't try to get her money back, nothing. He thinks about paying off the money for her but thinks she wouldn't accept it.

Hero constantly talks about punishing her. I want you safe and healthy so I'll punish you for lying to me. Punish, punish, punish.

Then she gets attacked in the lady's bathroom at the charity gala she put together for the community center where she works. Her previous boss at a nightclub tried to drug her so she quit after the hero gave her money. Her previous boss is in a different mafia family and is a rival of the hero's. So the guy who attacked her works for her previous boss and says the boss wants to rape her and he'll start right there. Hero kills the guy in front of her and has his family bring her to safety.

At this point, they have not had sex. I didn't care enough or feel the need to read about more "punishment" between the hero and heroine to keep reading.

Not for me

DNF at 60%

While I’m all for the overprotective, dominant alpha trope, I found Rayne to be way too heavy handed in how he dealt with his feelings and his relationship with Emerson.

It was asking too much too quickly and him not being happy with her fighting it after knowing him for 2 days… yeah that didn’t work out for me.

I’m also not a fan of BDSM so I skimmed those parts a bit. Since not much was keeping me interested I thought it best to call it quits.

Some positive points : I like the Saint James’s names and I’m intrigued by Wynter and Everett so I may give them a chance if they get a book.

This was my first mafia romance. I would say if you have never read a mafia romance and want to, this is a great book for beginners!

This one kinda gave me a mix of vibes from 50 shades and Haunting Adeline (def not as intense as that one, but he does want to k!ll any man who looks at his girl and he does admit to stalking her).

What turned me off the most was insta-love🤮

I enjoyed the storyline and the plot. The characters were fine. Rayne (MMC) was a morally grey, mafia boss who had his eyes set only on this one special woman. Emerson (FMC) was a selfless, child center worker who had a bit of a dirty side to go with her sweetness.

One thing I didn’t get was that the spice was suppose to be degradation. However, his punishments were stupid and were given for stupid reasons (like walking out of the room/out of his sight). His only 2 punishments were spanking and not letting her come…??? I’m sorry but not letting someone come is abuse🚨🤣

This one was okay, I’ll probably read some more in the series.

TW/caution: r@pe is attempted on page, degradation kink, mention of murd3r, cliffhanger, multiple typos

I love me some mafia romance so I read them on a regular basis, and seriously, When it Raynes was EPIC in my eyes. It's the story of our mafia hero, Rayne, who is my favorite type of alpha, and Emerson, the woman who brings him to his knees. I literally accomplished nothing for the whole day while reading & even debated right after I finished whether I was going to read it all over again immediately. Montana Fyre is such a talent who can hijack all my attention, and an author on my reread list. Listen, I know I'm gushing all over the place but I don't want to give anything else away since I went in blind & it made it all the better in my eyes so you're stuck with the fan girl gushing LOL! There's heat in spades, suspense with a kicker of twists, and a supporting cast showcasing an amazing family. Don't even try to pass on this story or you will be missing out on something great that I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was my first book by his author. It was pretty good. I won't lie, there was some repetition that started to grate on my nerves a little. For example, health and safety. It was said so much within a couple of chapters, that it started to get really old, pretty quick. It was like nails on a chalk board for me. Sweet girl was another one. I loved that Rayne called her that, but damn, he needed another name too with as much as he used this one.

Other than that, I loved Rayne!! He's that possessive, protective, alpha male character I love in books. God he was perfect. Emerson, needed some work. There was a disconnect with her wanting to be this strong female, but yet she came across more annoying than strong.

Overall it was a good book. I'll definitely be continuing with the series.

From the moment Rayne laid eyes on Emerson he knew she was going to be his. Emerson is down on her luck, working 3 jobs to pay off a debt her ex piled up in her name. Plus running the community center and going to school, she’s a hot mess.
When she meets Rayne she’s shocked at how much she’s attracted to him. Rayne let’s her know she’s his but she’s a stubborn independent woman who thinks she can take care of herself. Until an enemy of Raynes sets his eye on her.

Will Rayne save her before it’s too late?

I could not put this book down! I crushed it in one night and I can’t wait for the next book. I was going in skeptical. The cover reminded me of romance novels I’d find in my parents basement but BOY, was I pleasantly surprised. I love a romantic story line where the characters don’t give up on each other or call it quits when it gets tough and neither Rayne or Emerson give up on each other even though the events in their lives encourage them to go separate ways. Emerson is a very strong FMC and fights Rayne on almost everything but in the ends finds that what she was missing in life was someone to love and take of her. This book could have easily been a whole series and I can’t wait to see Rayne and Em again in the next book.

I received an ARC copy of this book, and this is my unbiased review.

I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book. Rayne is that totally overprotective, won't take no for an answer alpha type personality. Emerson had her whole life planned out until an ex screws her over, and now she is constantly struggling to stay afloat without worrying those around it.

This book does have some difficult themes, and the series centers around a family who's company is on both sides of the law. What I loved is that Rayne's family was still extremely wholesome and close, which isn't something I've seen in many books of this genre. It brought something new and refreshing and I had such a fun time with this story. I highly recommend it, and can't wait for the next book.

Nope just couldn’t get into it. I really wanted to love this book and when I saw a preview of it on TikTok I thought for sure I would but I couldn’t get on board with the characters and the same phrases used OVER AND OVER again.
Rayne constantly saying “all I care about is your HEALTH AND SAFETY” drove me insane! It felt so formal and annoyed the shit out of me!
The relationship between Rayne and Emerson just felt way too instant and I normally love the protective alpha male type but he just wasn’t it for me.

bad! bad bad bad bad BAD. i knew it was poorly written immediately but i’m traveling and decided to persevere, god knows why. horribly written. i don’t like to be mean in my reviews but omg the author must have the emotional intelligence of a seven year old. i’m sorry author, i hope you don’t read reviews (they’re not for you). i can’t believe the number of people that recommended this book, y’all can’t be for real. characters were too stupid to live, plot was not plotting, and the writing was just plain bad. so many typos and grammatical errors. show don’t tell? this author’s never heard of it. she’s gonna tell you and then tell you again and again and again. and then again just in case you’re stupid too <3

just no. i am genuinely worried for y’all that rated this 4+ stars.

Oh my god!!!! This book blew my mind and my heart.

Their story was just beautiful. In my opinion their love story happened a little to fast but still it was perfect. The plot was amazing specifically the last 30% of the book where most action happened.

Raynes has my heart, that man’s words were like honey. Even if he was a bit possessive, obsessed and controlling he was amazing. I really loved that is number one concern was the fmc health and safety.

That ending just made sob 😭 I immediately have to read the next story.

great read

Rayna falls fast and hard. He’s a true alpha and bossy as hell, so if that’s your kind of guy then this book is definitely for you. No 3rd act break up thankfully as I really hate that. This is the 1st in the Frost Industries series so can’t wait to jump into the next book.

I was scrolling on Instagram because I’m a mood reader and I couldn’t find anything to read. I’m huge mafia romance fan. This author is new to me, but I gave it a shot because it was on KU.

Side note: I am a huge supporter of authors being on KU. I will almost always read a new to me authors and I don’t care if it has 1 review or 12,000 reviews, simply because it’s offered on KU!!

All in all, I really enjoyed this book. I read it in one sitting and immediately download it book 2! I’ll take a possessive man any day of the week, and our hero was definitely that!!!
