This is a thriller that I really enjoyed. It is told in the first person, by Victor. Victor is a shrink, and works mainly with prisoners in the prison for the most serious cases from all over France. This gives us some nice portraits of inmates, of course.
Victor is also the lover of his best friend's wife. And one day, this woman is found murdered... Suddenly, everyone is a potential murderer, people from the woman's private life, and also from her work (she was a journalist, so...).
The story that follows is told in a very beautiful style, calm, with room for beautiful descriptions (the landscape is worth it), but well-paced. There is no way to get bored, the action goes on slowly but the tension grows steadily, and there are plenty of twists and turns.
I got attached to almost all the characters. They are so well described, nuanced. As the story progresses, it becomes quite strange to discover different aspects of their characters or relationships. (You are confronted with the fact that we only have relationships with images of people, and that everyone else, conversely, has an image of you - human relationships are relationships between images). I won't say much about the other characters, so as not to spoil the reading. But there are some who add spice and good humour when the thriller becomes more disturbing, poignant.
Also, Victor had some reactions that were irresponsible, certainly for a psy. But not often, and well, we often encounter some stupidities that are hard to believe in thrillers (and they suit the author well ;) ). On the other hand, Victor was extremely tired, he drank too much... he is not a hero, he is allowed to do some stupid things.
I'm not a fast reader, but there is, despite the style that gives an impression of calm, a tension that increases considerably during the reading, so it was difficult not to get on reading the whole time.
And then the ending... the reader wonders, was that it? But there is more. Instead of disappointing, the resolution becomes interesting. I don't agree with other readers who find the ending somewhat improbable. In my opinion, much is possible, if not everything, and certainly the scenario described in this book can happen.
For me it was perfect as a thriller. I really enjoyed the psychology. There was the fascinating plot from which I wanted to know the resolution, there were engaging characters, there was a lot of humour and there was a lot of fun.
a fascinating plot that I wanted to know the resolution, engaging characters, beautiful style... hard to let go of this book
