This is an angsty tale with no sense of direction.
The book's storyline was interesting for the most part, and the characters were engaging. A story about a red-neck hillbilly who falls in love with a black woman always catches my attention.

There is a lot of interaction between the main characters that I like. The push and pull, however, did not appeal to me. Throughout the story, the female character was behaving like a teenage girl who was lacking in self-awareness.
It took her a while to get to know the guy in the story because she followed the advice of others. She was very indecisive and lacked the ability to think for herself.

I also didn't like how the author stretched the story out. There are so many racist tropes in the storyline that it's like she threw them in without fleshing them out properly.

There was no good epilogue at the end, so the story rushed to an end.

This book ended on an abrupt note, leaving the reader to wonder how did the couple is doing while the author decided to write about the other brother who has his own novel.

DNF at 50%

Not my usual 1-star DNF. The writing was good and the author had a good way of creating a sense of place. And I was getting a very Sally Ann and Hasil (from the tv show The Outsiders) vibe with the main couple.

I just didn't like the story itself. It exceeded my acceptable racist hillbilly threshold.

2.50 Stars. (BW/WM). Kindle Unlimited Edition e-book.

Setting: Current day in a small segregated town in the mountains of Appalachia,

Trope: Enemies to lovers.

Main characters:
1. Minnie Brown, heroine, is the town's veterinarian.
2. Rebel McCall, hero, is a member of the one of the wealthiest and most influential families in the area.
3. Duke McCall, the patriarch of the McCall clan , wants to keep the McCall bloodline pure and has forbade his sons entering into romantic relationships with black women.
The premise of the story is interesting and the story is well written; however, the many storylines about other characters and the negative interference of the couple's family and neighbors over shadow romance of Rebel and Minnie. Rebel runs a stop sign and hits Minnie's car but Minnie is reluctant to accept his offer to repair her car and give her transportation until the repairs are completed. Rebel and Minnie are immediately attracted to each other but Minnie spends a good portion of the story annoyingly denying her attraction to Rebel as she simultaneously day dreams about being with him. Minnie and Rebel get a happy for now.

Busy

This story had so much going on, not enough that you couldn't follow it. Busy nonetheless, Rebel wanted Minnie from the moment he saw her. Minnie, on the other hand, while attracted to Rebel, fought the attraction until she couldn't anymore. This small town opposites attract story had promise and from my perspective could have been better.

Enjoyed!

This was my first book from this author. The storyline was good and I love me some Rebel. I can't wait to find out more details about this family. I know he loves Minnie and can't wait to see how they turn out, that daughter is something else and going to get someone hurt. The cliffhanger (Wow)

I had to re-read to figure out how I felt about this book. I think the story is written quite well. The chemistry between the main characters was intriguing enough for me to want to see it through. Whilst the depiction of racism was somewhat accurate, there were quite a few moments were it was very tough to get past. A lot was left unresolved, especially how the characters moved past a traumatic experience.

This ends on a cliff hanger
I’m curious to see where this goes hopefully some of the unresolved issues are addressed in the following book.

When I read the description of this story, I was intrigued as to how this interracial romance would play out on the pages. Rebel is related to a patriarch who is bent on keeping his bloodlines pure and his sons from having relationships with black women. Needless to say, the hero is setting himself apart from his racist family and is smitten by the local vet, Minnie. Minnie is a virgin who takes the verbal set downs by her mother who believes she should stay in race when it comes to marriage. Her mother believes she means well, however she is no saint herself, where she guilts Minnie to a point where she believes she needs to remain in town to take care of her. Minnie has no knowledge of the real world sheltered in this small town and her naivete to life in general and surroundings.

I thought the story was interesting and could have been developed a but more. The trope of enemies to lovers and opposites attract, I enjoy reading. Considering this is small town Appalachian, I tend to shy away from this genre and knew there would be racial tensions and plenty of name calling in the story. What surprised me is that with all the "over the place" beginning, the ending sort of worked out for this reader. I modestly gave 3-Stars for this read but again, development could have been improved with editing to make this a very good read.

I was taken aback by just how racist some of these townspeople were, and also how quick they were to toss around the word "whore", but aside from that I think I really liked this one? I loved Rebel and Minnie, and Chrissie is the MVP of friendships.
I definitely liked it enough to download book 2.

DNF @ 5%.

I simply can't read a book where a FMC is 30 years old, an accomplished business owner, and still letting her mother bully her. Immediately annoyed.

Good read

I really hate books like this. I saw no love just straight lust. He practically owns Minnie. It has a good storyline. I'm interested in who killed whom.

Small Minds

Minnie had left home to get her degree in veterinarian medicine. She loved animals. Moving back home was like moving back hundred years in time. The races were separated in all things. Rebel was part of the McCall family, that was very much feared for ruthlessness. He tried to distant himself from his family. He laid eyes on Minnie and knew she was the one for him, it took a lot of convincing to get her to agree. Prejudice ruled the area.

Good book

I had a hard time reading it, but it was good. I had to get pass all the derogatory names that we were called. It took me three days to read this book. I had to take breaks so I wouldn't dislike anyone. This is a very good book, just hard to read. It is too much of what's really happening to Black folk today. I still recommend this book. Leave your anger behind.

This book was a mess rebels family especially his father were past crazy. I couldn't believe the mess he did to Minnie was past abuse. Roman is crazy and the crap he pulled especially who he really is was unbelievable. I did like Rebel and Minnie together. I also couldn't believe they were walking around there not being about to read and write.

The Back Half Is Where The Story is Good

*****Spoilers*****

This one heats up in a major way at book end, not only with Rebel and Minnie having sex, but also with the storyline, but the former was incredibly hot. Minnie is a Black female VET who owns her practice and Rebel is a White male mechanic who owns his own shop. They're from different sides of town where the two races don't mix and racism isn't a thing of the past. Minnie's side of town, particularly her mother, wants Minnie to settle down with a nice Black man and when she and Rebel start seeing more of one another, she gets not so subtle hints to let it alone. But, to make things even worse, Rebel is a McCall, the family that runs the town, not all of the family's activities are legal, and its patriarch Duke is firmly in the no Blacks mixing with Whites category.

Rebel is less hatred and has made a way on his own without the family's coffers in recent years. Rebel's brother Roman is bad news and seems to be straddling the line between helping to run the family's illegal activities while sharing his father's attitude and being his brothers' keeper. Throw in a teenaged daughter that could be either Roman's or Rebel's and tension between Rebel and Roman is the rule. Anyway, the McCall family is so racist that when Duke learns that Rebel and Minnie are more than friends, he pays Minnie a visit with a family relative whom he brought over to rape her. Roman unintentionally interrupts the impending rape until Rebel is able to make it to Minnie's place and kills the rapist cousin before knocking his dad out cold and getting into a fight with Roman. It's a near thing for Minnie who's a 30 year old virgin and that introduction to sex would've been traumatic, especially since she's been trying to give it to Rebel but there had been stops and starts to them coming together before then. From there though, Minnie and Rebel get their relationship off the ground and seem to be very solid in a short time.

I could appreciate the book and story more toward the end. The beginning was a jumble and I wanted to scream editor, editor, editor frequently. Not so much for typos but for consistency and for keeping the book from jumping from one thing, situation or fact, to something else without doing more to help the reader along. All in all, it meant confusing leaps and backtracking. An example is when Rebel brings his niece Katie to the Black side of town's chicken restaurant and Minnie's thought is that red boots hit the gravel as Katie climbs down. Next is Rebel who gets out of the driver's seat and helps Katie out of the truck bed. Except Katie was already boots to gravel in the previous scene. There are other examples here and there but as a reader, it was confusing and I had to make sure I wasn't trippin'about the series of events. There was head hopping as well that added to the confusion, one minute we're from Minnie's point of view, the next to Rebel's. We also got more of the Black side of this picture and not so much the White side, but in any case I would've expected more than just Duke to protest loudly about Rebel and Minnie given the town's history.

In any case, the end of the book was interesting and cohesive enough for me to lift its rating because it was for sure a bit lower in my mind before it cleared up some and got better.

“A segregated small town. An illicit interracial affair.”

That’s this book in a nutshell. Two people from this same tiny racist town meet and feel an instant attraction. Rebel is from the white side, Minnie from the black side. Nobody from either side wants them together. However, Rebel’s family is a lot more violent about it. This book is the set up for an overarching storyline that runs throughout the rest of the series.

I would give this book 4 stars for the romance. Very spicy. And underneath it all, you just see two people who want to be together and can’t understand why they can’t simply because of the color of their skin. However, they know how their families are and realistically worry what that means for their future.

I would also give 4 stars for the little bits of mystery and intrigue sprinkled throughout. For instance, what danger is coming to the mountain? What troubles are the McCalls facing? Who is Roman’s mother? Who is Katie’s father? And the biggest mystery of all happens at the end of the second epilogue:

But what bumps this down for me is the writing style. Often times the “voice” would just up and change with no warning. We’d be getting the story from one person’s perspective, then all of a sudden, another person would be telling the story, and we be hearing their thoughts and feelings instead. No section break or anything to indicate a new voice is starting. It would just change. And that was kind of distracting. Also, because I’m having a hard time understanding why Minnie wants to stick around that town, truth be told. Something horrific happens to her and there is no way. But that’s just me. I can’t realistically see her staying there and risking her own life, and that of any family she could potentially have. But again, that’s just me, and something like that lessened my enjoyment factor a little.

That being said, I actually really like this book. The content warning at the beginning was very accurate because the language in here is very much … what you would expect from the people she’s describing. And it is sometimes very hard to read. But at the same time, I think a lot of things in this book were a lot funnier than maybe intended. There were parts where I was literally laughing out loud. So yes, I had a good time with this and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Wow, Rebel and Minnie😘😊😘

I’ve read books where the story is based in a small town, but this was unlike any other I’ve read before. There are triggers so be aware⚠️.

One thing I realized early on was the backwoods of Florin, white and black operated very differently from other small towns and at times I questioned what year the story was based in due to the outward racism and discrimination of the town folks😳😱. Rebel however lived true to his name going against his own family. Rebel and brother Roman didn’t get a long well and Katie complicated it even more. I loved how Minnie stood strong as a business owner in the community. Her questioning Rebels intention was valid especially knowing his family🤔. The desire and chemistry was glaringly evident early on and they would work through it together😘. Minnie's mom annoyed me to no end as she continued to put her daughter down in shame, she lacked love and empathy of her daughter😤. Rebel did his best to keep the negativity at bay but it’s hard in a small town where the folks are set in their ways and don’t know any better. Sadly Katie took after her mother taking advantage of Junior being smitten on her, the upside was that she left him which was for his own good😏.

This is my first book by this author Ms. Meadows and I have to say I enjoyed it more than expected👍🏽. I’m curious to read more about the other McCall brothers Roman, Ross and Rain😊

It's Okay

It had a lot of racism, I don't like reading books with heavy racism but I have in the past and have known authors to craft the book in a beautiful way to make it work, make u feel hopeful and whatnot🙌🏾 But this book didn't do it for me. It was decent. If I didn't mind racism so much I'd think it was better but I deal with that ish enough as a black woman on America😐. With that said I still try to read outside of my comfort zone from time to time which is why I gave it a try. Hope this helps😉

SPOILERS👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾
As for junior it may seen hypocritical since I'm reading a BWWM book but I kinda feel like it is what it is, they been salivating after ww for centuries and we see what the outcomes are💯. There's a reason WWBM relationship have the absolute worse outcome out of all interracial relationships and BWWM have the most successful‼️. I hope he doesn't get hurt but he's old enough to know better.

I didn't want Minnie to end up with Rebel after learning how racist his family is, the odds are stacked against them considerably and I'm worried for her safety😩I'm all for love interracial or not as long as it is genuine and authentic at its core but not when it comes to sistahs being in such a tight situation like she is, where the law and the numbers ain't on her side💔. Everything coulda been in 1 book I feel. I'll have to read the synopsis of book 2 to see if I want to continue but I doubt it since this one didn't have me hooked like good books do🙌🏾

New Author, Great Book

I believe this is the first book by author Marion Meadows. One of the first things I noticed about the book was that we get to see the perspective of several characters. Veterinarian Minnie has returned home to open a practice. She has a contentious relationship with her judgmental mother. Her mother is pressuring her to settle down and get married. The tiny town remains somewhat segregated. The McCalls run the town and the father is unsavory. When Rebel the second oldest son sees Minnie he is immediately taken by her personality and beauty. While inexperienced Minnie is attracted to him, she knows that it will not be easy to have a relationship with a man outside of her race. This book is the first in a series and I am eager to have some of the questions from the first book answered. Rebel has three brothers Roman, Rain and Ross. Ross is already in a relationship. Roman had a strange reaction to Minnie. How are they connected? I loved this story….Rebel was an awesome leading man….kind, humorous, sensual and strong. Minnie was so sweet and humble but with strength and determination. Waiting for part 2!

Not bad at all!!!! but this Katie, my goodness, what a child!

This was actually not bad. I was hoping and wished that each book finished even if in the next book, the characters from the previous book would make a reappearance or cameo appearance, but I guess the preparation for the next book is fine also…
But after seeing a little bit of Roman and the others, I think this one will be my one and only if this series. I am going to see if MS. Meadows have anything else because I love her writing for a first time reading this author, it’s just this series is not there for me, even though this is my genre.
To me only Rebel is good. Minnie was getting on my nerves but I liked her at the end; Roman and Duke were horrible, while Rain was just blah and Katie was worst of them all. Chrissie was probably after Rebel, the best one yet. Mrs. Brown was despicable as well as Ben and Junior and the others were really jaw dropping kind of reaction!
I think I figured out who Roman is supposed to be from but who knows….
In any case, the penmanship was superb…. So grab it and see for yourself!!!!

this is NOT at all enemies to lovers. The Mmc's father is racist and against mixing. As s result, he Fmc's mother is extremely cautious about race mixing especially with the mmc. The whole town seems to be wary of skin colour but the younger generation are more open. The story is cute and sweet. The mmc is a cinnamon roll for the fmc. He's got no issues with black people despite his family and upbringing. Race only plays a factor as background drama for the mmc. The fmc is reluctant only because of warnings, but she's fully interested. What takes place is very Hallman movie style with some racism drama from the mmcs family. The 2 main characters had no issues except for the drama from the peripheral people. It was written in the 3rd person which I hate, but it was well written. My rating is for me because I was really hoping for enemies to lovers- this had none at all and has been completely mis-named.

Intriguing storyline

My first time reading this author’s work and I’m not disappointed at all. As I read I love how she wove old country, ancient stereotypes but not so ancient. Minnie’s character was frustrating at times, from her decision to be roped into a date with Lawrence,”a respectable black man”,to her allowing her mom to guilt her into behaving a certain way, even still sending her money,Ms.Brown’s views are no better than Pa Macall’s,both violent and deadly.
Rebel is my favorite character, not smart (according to most standards) but full of decency. Can’t wait to find out how Katie world comes to a crash, poor Junior. He’ll learn that the silky hair, blue eyes and lily white skin that mesmerizes even our grown men in today’s society, usually, have an ulterior motive, when they pull you in.

intense

Minnie is a bit naive and Rebel lives up to his name. Minnie is game goofy and Rebel is hillbilly crazy. This book doesn’t gloss over the hate and history of black and white people in this town. The wealth disparity, racism and privilege is prevalent in this book’s setting. It made you feel uncomfortable, paranoid and leery about each encounter the main characters had. It built up a level of angst in me while still enjoying the forbidden romance that was budding even though this is happening in a modern time versus Jim Crow. This is what makes it so good. Them McCalls are hell - Duke who is a racist bastard, Roman who literally has got something in him, Rebel who just wants nothing to do with the family at all, Ross who is in the wind and Rain who is usually two sheets to the wind.
Great read!

Interesting

Couldn't figure out what decade this story is set in, either way, Minnie was overtly naive, I hate because a woman isn't experienced with men that automatically means she has no sense. A black girl growing up in that place isn't shocked by racism, she went off to become a vet but came back acting surprised by racism & corrupt cops. Come on now, I'm tired of the r*pe stuff too. We get it, they could threaten her without all that. Their racism is enough. We know they're bad guys, Katie GOT WAY TOO MUCH SCREEN TIME, her story isn't interesting. The white girl dating a black boy in a racist town has been done to death. I did like rebel & Minnie connection. Their romance was what kept me engaged.

Rebel, Rebel, Rebel

This read was well written. Just raw with emotions all over the place. Not sure why Minnie wanted to live there, the elder McCalls were terrible! Ain’t no way I would have stayed if given the opportunity to leave all that behind. And her mom! Her mom was the worst! I would have been done with her long before their big fight. Rebel was a conflicting character. Not quite of the same mind as some of the McCalls but not exactly that much better either. He seemed complacent until Minnie caught his attention. Complacent in the whole situation with Katie.. just not a man of any real conviction. But I liked the story, I did feel the connection between Rebel and Minnie which is what prompted the 4 stars.

Rebel and Minnie - A real rebel in his family

OMG! I couldn’t put this book down. Having lived through times like this just a different state brought back old hurts and blindness of childhood. I loved Rebel because he was a rebel, against his family business and staunch racism. He loved Minnie and would go to the ends of the earth to keep her safe. Wondered if Rain had a drug problem because of this family business. What’s up with Roman? Was he aware of Katie’s plan? Was Katie jealous of Minnie’s place in Rebel’s life? Can’t wait for another book as this definitely ended in a cliffhanger.
