A beautiful and self-contained Boys’ Love fairy tale set in the deep, dark woods.

Once upon a time, Marcel’s sister injured herself in the forest while gathering herbs. Marcel was at a loss for what to do until a fearsome horned man appeared, offering help–in exchange for a promise. Now, ten years later, Marcel returns to the woods, steeling himself for death. Instead, he finds something quite different: a gentle soul, friendship…and perhaps something more.

Disappointed that this is actually an anthology and not a single story. Marcel and Gisel were definitely the most interesting, so the entire manga should have been about them.

I think it would have been 5 stars if it had just been Marcel and Gisel's story, they were so wholesome and sweet. The other short stories were nice but I was too attached to the main story to enjoy them more. Don't know why this was rated 15+ though

Ahh this started off going in such a positive direction, but I didn't realize that this was an analogy. I wish that it primarily spent time on Marcel and Gisel more.

Entangled with You: The Garden of 100 Grasses starts with a story focused on Marcel and Gisel who meet after Marcel's sister becomes sick while they are in the forest. Marcel and Gisel make a deal that must be fulfilled 10 years later. Unfortunately, the manga doesn't solely focus on their relationship which I found to be beautiful and tender and extremely reminiscent of Beauty and the Beast. Aoi weaves in other short stories that are beautiful and delve into the romantic relationships shared by several couples; however, it felt a little disjointed and I wasn't sure if there was supposed to be a common theme (outside of plants and nature) that binds the stories together. The artwork was beautiful, but the storytelling did fall a little flat and I found it to be rather disappointing.

As others said, the story of Marcel and Gisel was good, but the transition into an anthology of other plant-themed BL was jarring and disappointing. The other stories weren't bad but nothing, not even the main one, had enough room to develop it's potential.

The marketing from Seven Seas was also pretty misleading; no mention in the cover copy of it being an anthology and it contained no content that warranted an older teen rating.

Loved the art, but found the stories a bit too melancholy and slice of life. I expected romance and got weird plant depression.

Highlight was the main story, which if given a bit more room would have meant a higher rating.

Unfortunately I'm thinking this one will be passed on to a charity shop, after having waited on the pre-order for half a year :-(

Technically 2.5

I was really enjoying the main story with Marcel and Gisel. That was the whole reason I bought the book. I was really interested in their story. It felt so short though and then the book became an anthology which made me feel a little tricked. The other stories were very short, sometimes only being a few pages long.

At the end of the day, I just would have liked to see the main story fleshed out more and fill the whole book rather than small short one-shots. I really enjoyed Marcel and Gisel’s relationship but I wanted to see more of how they became closer.

The art, especially the backgrounds of the homes and nature was gorgeous. I would like to read more of this author if it was a longer story.

Would’ve been better if it followed Marcel and Gisel the entire time. It felt a little sporadic when it changed stories more than halfway through the book.

I was not expecting this to a) be an anthology and b) be so literary and existential. The story of Marcel and Gisel was adorable, kind of like Beauty and the Beast but a lot more wholesome. Marcel was really sweet and I would've loved a whole volume of just his life with Gisel, I feel like it could've been BL The Ancient Magus' Bride. Out of the other stories I liked Along the Way best, the story of the prince and the shepherd was really sweet. Overall I think this should definitely be advertised more as an anthology, though I like to imagine that the stories Marcel and Gisel read were the ones that appeared in the book.

I wish there was more of the main story, I would have liked to see more of Gisel and Marcel, but I did think it was a really nice read. Simple and soft, which is what I was looking for when I bought it.

Unlike the other reviews here, I really liked the other side stories in the middle. I didn't take it so much as an anthology (although it likely actually is such). I more chose to interpret it as those are BL versions of the stories that Marcel and Gisel were reading together, even if that doesn't totally make sense based on the variety of time periods. I just thought it was a nice way to look at it. I do wish they hadn't taken as much time away from the main story though.

I love little cozy stories like these, especially when they have such beautiful art. However most of the books is short stories who have nothing to do with the main story and in the end, they all felt like a tease, always making me want to learn more about the world, the characters and their relationships but in the end not giving any of that. That did disappoint me a little.

one star for the initial story the synopsis is based on. you’d have no idea this was an anthology til you read it. i’m super bummed because I actually really liked the first story, but then the rest was poorly written and confusing. booooooo

I didn’t know this was an anthology. So I am feeling thoroughly scammed.

I did adore Marcel and Gisel, however, their story gets cut short and it the rest is just meh. Totally don’t need to be an anthology.

I really liked this! I wish the summary of the book said that it was an anthology, but I liked the themes of the stories!! I loved that it all revolves around flowers :) Cute!

Tries to be beautiful and philosophical, but something is just missing. It's too short/superficial.

This was a cute little story, though I was surprised to find that the first half of the book was the story on the cover and back synopsis and the other half of the book was a series of short stories by the author instead of a continuation of that original story. I did like that in the very end there was another little short return to the original characters.
So while I did like it, I would have liked it more if it had just continued the original story.

I know the other reviewers are annoyed that the main story in this is just over half the book with the rest being a collection of short pieces, but actually, I found that reading this collection in this way gave really interesting insight into.... the thesis (for lack of a better term) of the author.

These are all stories about the deep, quiet and steadfastness of long term love - not the falling of falling in love, but what love is and does after years together (or years of being in love). It's a lovely portrait of commitment and as someone in their 26th year of marriage I found it lovely and moving and to have successfully captured relationships in this phase.

Is it weird that my top three manga are all m/m romances... maybe, but this easily made it's way into my favourites.

I want my money back! Feel scammed.
100% but and read this but have in the back of your mind that it’s an anthology. The art alone is worth it. SO FREAKING BEAUTIFUL.

I signed up for Marcel and Gisel, not for the rest. I honestly thought that those other stories would lead back to/are connected to Marcel and Gisel in some way. It didn’t make sense, but I was hoping it all would come together at the end. Which it didn’t. Why does it not say on the cover that it’s an anthology😭

Partway through the first story in this book (because, again, this is an unlabeled collection of short tales), I thought: this reminds me a lot of Tsumasaki Ni Kourozu.

Well, that's because they're by the same person. I'm delighted: I didn't realize I already had another collection of their works sitting on my shelf. Beyond the art style, all the stories have the same distinct feel. Poetic, nature-focused, relaxing but a bit melancholic, with a strong fantasy/fairy tale element. It's very much my vibe.

This time around, there are more stories, which means several of them are very short. The majority don't really have much in the way of romance, either, with most of that coming through heavy hints and quiet tension. It's more a collection of people finding their way in a world that didn't entirely have a place set out for them.

The title story is Beauty and the Beast without any of the curse. A boy finds his sister injured in the woods and turns, in desperation, to the horned beast who lives across the barrier that all are told not to cross. He offers anything in exchange for a cure - the beast says yes, there is something he wants, but the boy interrupts him and asks for time to be with his sister, agreeing to return once she is married and has a home of her own.

When the man returns as promised ten years later, he finds that it was all a prejudiced misunderstanding, and the only thing the beast - Giselbert - had wanted was a friend.

Here's where that melancholic feeling enters this story, because it's clear that Giselbert has a much longer lifespan than a human, which means he and Marcel have already lost a decade of the time they could've spent together. But they're making the most of it now, through a friendship and partnership that deepens by the day.

I loved the twist in the fairy tale: where the warning about staying out of the woods lest your soul be taken meant only that once Marcel met Giselbert, he would never want to leave him.

It's a lovely story, with so much uncomplicated warmth. Even Marcel's sister embraces their relationship, once she gets over the initial shock. The message throughout is that all any of them had to do all along was to talk about things. If they'd gone with proper communication, they would've prevented years of anxiety from festering.

There's also a great line in this story: "But learning of something new makes the heart yearn for it." That, and another quote from the closing story (which loops back to Giselbert and Marcel), sums up Aki Aoi's writing style, and the point of these tales, so well: "But our perspective changes how we label things."

You can't truly understand something without studying it - or someone without speaking with them. And once you begin that journey, you continue wanting to learn more and more, because the quest for knowledge is a never-ending path that continues to reward you with each step.

Some of the stories in this volume are a little too brief for me to really get hooked on - or have endings that are a bit too sad for me - but they all have such a literary feel. A very rewarding, thought-provoking collection.

It was an alright read overall. The book's biggest flaw is that at halfway it loses focus for almost the rest of the book and it doesn't know whether it wants to be a sweet story focused on just one storyline or a collection of less sweet oneshots; between the comics centered around Marcel and Gisel were oneshots featuring completely unrelated characters. None of them felt fitting to be alongside Marcel and and Gisel's story, as none of them had a similar mood or theme or any other considerable connection to it. Particularly left me feeling down, which left a sour taste in my mouth since I was hoping to read more sweet stories before I'd get back to reading more about Marcel and Gisel.

Had the book focused only on Marcel and and Gisel's story and fleshed it out further, I'd most likely rate it 5 stars. Just their story as it is in this book? 4 stars (I'd mark the fact that there's a singular story that's not connected to the Entangled with You series as a negative in that case). Everything that's between these covers? Sadly, just 3, because just like the moods of its contents, my feelings after the book are mixed.

A pity, because I adored Marcel and Gisel's story and that was what I was here for.

I went into this book expecting it to be all one story but this was more like an anthology. I enjoyed all the stories but was most invested in the longer one the book began with. I'm glad there was a short epilogue of that story at the end of this volume, but I would have liked even more time with those characters.

Most of the stories in this volume are short experiences showing two people connecting and being comforted by one another. Most of them also have a strong nature theme. The stories are:

Entangled With You. This was the long story in the book and was about a young man befriending a man he was scared of as a kid. They build their lives and garden together.

Stalks. I loved this story about plants and gardeners and their care for one another.

Passage. This started with a burned out corporate worker but he has a nice exchange with someone who enlivened him. This story didn't feel like it fit well with the others.

Corrosion. A man returns home with mushrooms growing from him and seems changed in a serene way. His partner reflects on if the change is good and how best to continue to love him.

Along the Way. A man thinks he's a bummer but his friend takes him on a trip. He seems to start to understand his value.

I love reading anthology comics but this was probably one of the weaker volumes I've read. More because half the volume is dedicated to one very good story and then the rest are different stories. It's not advertised well enough that its an anthology and tbh the volume would have been better just focusing on the Entangled with You story. The stories after it are way too short to leave and impact and feel very rushed and forgettable. I do like that the volume tries to have theme and narrative driven stories rather than just simple tropey romance. But also the volume doesn't really feel like a BL romance book more just happens to feature it ig. The first and last stories are the only ones I really liked. The middle three were just poorly executed.
The art wasn't too good too, it does it's job and looks nice enough but I felt it was very plain and boring. Alot of talking heads. Obviously making comics is hard and deadlines are a thing so it can be excused as the style is easy on the eyes at least.
It's not terrible but I wouldn't go out of your way to get it unless you really like a different type of BL story.

2.5 rounded up for ‘interesting concept’

I really like grass and have since childhood, where I made many (failed) attempts to steal some from the yard and grow it in the house. One of my top favorite books in high school was Willa Cather’s My Antonia —FULL of red, waving grass. So it was only natural that I made a beeline for this grass-themed Beauty and the Beast inspired BL manga. This book is ALL soft edges. There’s very little conflict and not much character growth, which means the draw needs to come from elsewhere —like gorgeous art, pretty writing, or character studies. Mmmm. Maybe if this was just one story —the opening riff on Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunately, and what I didn’t understand when I picked the manga up, is that it’s a collection of short stories, bookended by the main story. Which means none of the stories get enough airtime. Which means I had to force myself to finish this because it wasn’t particularly interesting or compelling. Nice art, attractive premise, spotty follow-through.

The art style as well as all the themes of nature and plants in the story was beautiful and calming, however I found the overall stories to be lacking. I went into this believing it was a single story and was a 175 page standalone with a seemingly beauty and the beast retelling with a BL storyline instead, and yeah that’s true for 80 pages but from there it’s broken up into a bunch of single chapter stand alone stories. I feel that how short all the stories were made it hard to have much substance other than the overarching theme of nature that was retold in each story. Also it was supposed to be a bl story and it more so seemed like a story of close friendship not yet love or unable to say it’s love which was disappointing. I really love being able to see characters express their feelings for each other and it’s more so implied than expressed here. Overall I thought the artwork was lovely and the book did have a nice calming effect to it.

Just made it to 3 stars for me. I picked this up because the main story looked really cozy and interesting. In most ways it delivered but my overall feeling was that I was left wanting more.

The conflict around the main story involves Marcel (MC) struggling to overcome his shame for hating the love interest, who was in the end just a misunderstood gentle giant type. My problem was we don’t see any of the time he hated the LI, we’re only told about it. For me it was asp confusing whether or not they were a couple. But the end it’s clear that they are, but I would have liked a little more clarity.

For the other stories I don’t have much to say, I liked a couple and felt like I was left wanting more from others.

The art was stunning and I really loved the corrosion story. The opening was very striking and I actually read that one twice. Also liked the relationship between the MC and LI in the first story! Very soft and wholesome.

Rating: 3.5*

This is a collection of stories and honestly I would've loved if the whole thing was about the first one. It was kind of giving beauty and the beast, but the beast doesn't change back. I didn't need full monster fucker, but I at least wanted some monster kissing y'know? My least favorite was probably the business man one mostly because the implied love interest I think was a high schooler, but really nothing happens in that story. So maybe it's too much to say he's a love interest. It's just about a guy who feels like he has no place in this world being lifted up by a boy's piano playing and that boy felt like he wasn't doing well, but he was able touch at least one person and that makes him happy. It was really sweet.

Beyond the first story most of them are pretty short. Most of the stories have a fantastical or paranormal aspect. I don't have much to say about each one other than I enjoyed them. The art and writing was nice. It was a refreshing read.

I'm mostly rating this on the main story that takes up the most space in this volume. It is not groundbreaking or revolutionary, but it was a very sweet tale. The other shorter stories that made up the volume were a bit of a mixed bag, but the tone was consistent, dreamlike and wistful, tendrils of longing that start to creep up the sides of the page, and the stories end before we get a definitive happy conclusion. However, I think we can infer that (with the possible exception of the story Corrosion) the endings are meant to be pleasant and/or hopeful.

The design of the book, from the interstitial pages to end page design to the cover with glossy leaves and matte portraits of the characters, is beautiful, thoughtful and cohesive.

I suppose I can understand many people giving this a middling rating, expecting a longer more detailed story to fill the whole volume, but I found a lot to enjoy here and will likely revisit it in future.
