Fighting with your heart on the line may be hard, but it's sure as hell worth it.
Emma and Kaitlynn are about to start the next—and final—series of Trials, and the only thing that seems certain is that it’s going to be a bumpy friggin’ ride.
Past those, there's still the mysterious Final Hub to tackle, undoubtedly featuring a certain flying Lightning Witch with a grudge.
Even if they make it through all that, will what Emma gained in the Realm of Imagination prove enough to protect her in the mysterious society that awaits them outside?
One thing seems clear: Emma will have to be prepared to put everything on the line to succeed.
H.C. Mills is a Dutch author, who dabbles in acting and singing in musicals, and even (play)writing them. He used to teach physics and chemistry, and once represented his country in the 2008 International Biology Olympiad, but please don't hold that against him.
As a physics-nerd, H.C. Mills naturally gravitates to hard magic systems, but he also enjoys writing comedy and romance.
Like most authors worth their salt, he is a true sadist who takes pleasure in the mental anguish of his imaginary friends/brainchildren--or better yet, in making them cause their own suffering. He refuses to give them anything for free, but will usually leave a window cracked open for them somewhere, to escape whatever peril he plunges them in.
He's also a big fan of Tabletop RPG's, and can even be watched every Sunday, playing on the Pathfinder Livestream 'Rules as Fun' here: twitch.tv/rulesasfun
(Pathfinder is like D&D but with more choices and flavour)
This series has one of the weirdest, yet most thought out alternate dimension/realm/world I've ever read/watched. The fundamental laws of reality, like the law of conservation of energy, don't exist in this world. It has different laws that the whole story follows pretty well. It's really fun watching the characters expand their knowledge on the world, as it blows my mind each time with the new ideas and alternate realities that I can actually understand if I think about them enough. Unlike other stories that just say; it's magic, it just works. It doesn't just build a well-defined magic power system, it builds a well-defined alternate reality.
Mills has let the relationship between Emma and Kaitlyn completely take over the book. The stupid teenage drama, the kissing, and not wanting to kiss. The weird lesbian/not lesbian yin/yang attraction, imaginary kingdom feelings, it's just weird and overdone.
If it was just part of the story, that'd be fine, but it literally takes up more than half the book. It is the driving point of the novel, and it's just not interesting to me. Add in all the make-out scenes, descriptions of what they are going to do, optional adult scene chapters, and Mills just got lost in the fantasy of these two girls hooking up in another universe...
I like the story, so I'll give it another go and see if Mills pulls it back and focuses on the story, rather than this silly/weird teenage romance.
This series was gripping enough, but grim and depressing, and now that I've finally stuck it out long enough to learn what's actually going on, I think I'm done. I feel no desire to read ANOTHER entire book of this shit. Maybe if the gay-for-you/internalized homophobia plotline had been less extended I would be invested enough in the main relationship to want to keep going for their reunion, but man I do NOT care. At this point I'm more annoyed with the series than anything else. I assume book five is going to be, what, I'm sure if you're actually into death tournaments shit this is more For You than it was for me, but I came in sideways through isekai and litrpgs, and this is not what I want out of litrpgs.
Good story. In the end, we finally find what it's all been leading up to, and I think this means the next book in the series will be something extra special, I can't wait to read it. Really want to see where the story goes from here, Such a major reveal at the end. If you've read any of the books in this series, you definitely have to pick up this one, it explains it all, and what an explanation it is. Pretty cool actually. Add it to your to read shelf now if you haven't already.
A decent continuation to the story but for some reason things felt a little more juvenile in this. I feel like with mostly Emma and Kaitlynn the EQ should have been higher but for one reason or another things just ended up being more childish. The story also dragged on a bit longer for Emma's progression so I feel like a bit of editing would have helped. Regardless the story is progressing and I can't wait for the final audio book to be out!
I'll be honest, I put more effort in to reading this than I should have. From the start I thought the MC was kind of a ditz but it got so much worse. The developing relationship for MC and Kait was great in book one. But then the author had to make it a needless point of contention. And the ending... Well I'm going to be honest it was entirely awful.
If you are here for the LITRPG then this isn't for you. After book 1 it pretty much went downhill in that part. Even the ending was predictable and it's an open ending with many questions unanswered.
Yep, this has grown into a five star story. If you’re here you probably already know it’s a good series. If you landed here unaware, start with the first book, buckle in and enjoy the journey.
I was struggling with the first half of this book, with the adolescent behaviors and slowness. The second half and in particular the final quarter of the book were really good.
-Aaahhh the ending!! Like I saw it coming but I’m scared for Emma now lmaoo -No bc the fact that we finally got Emma and Kait together and then now they’re separated I’m crying (when we were together we never turned our back on each other (ooohh but nooowww) but now that we’re seperated . . .) -The trials in this one ATE - the first one was kind of meh and had me a little stressed but I loved the tag team one and the final course before the last hub oof I loooved that had my heart racing - and Emma giving her place up for Kait did it for me like I can forgive u for all that bs from before now lol -ALSO ALEC 😭 I’m so sad he grew on me I swear the ones that I find annoying always end up dying right after I decide I like them lol -I lowkey thought the crystals were going to be like manned by people and that they were going to be like robot slaves or something like that but it turns out that they’re just like possessed slaves?? Like damn I did all that just so u can passes me -Also I feel like we all should’ve known nothing good was coming at the end w/ all those weird ass carving of humans doing weird scary shit on the doors like obviously whoever made this place doesn’t like humans -I would’ve been pissed that I didn’t get to be a tattooed bald person lowkey and that instead look like a purple goat like fuck awf -I honestly feel like it would’ve been more interesting if Kait and Emma had to fight each other at the end and they like forced them to actually fight each other / made a no tap out clause for the final fight (obviously they would get around it and not actually kill each other) but that would’ve been so good vs Emma just fighting that rando creep -Also this dumbass just flying somewhere that the owl said she would just kick her out of was dumb?? Like where r u really going to go - also if it’s just her spirit that gone wtf r they going to done/ her body - can’t Siri just continue to use it even if Emma isn’t like present in it? Or does the person have to be conscious - also wtf were they living in before humans? The frogs and dino’s and shit? Just like on the floor? How tf did they even get inside the humans if they have no hands/body? - they’re can’t be that many of them if they were so chill about killing like 95% of the humans they brought Why not live in imagination world where u can be an anime bitch or whatever u want to look like?? U wouldn’t need to posses anyone to do that and u can imagine anything u want there sounds like heaven honestly
