Threatened by change on an unimaginable scale, the creatures of the field must put aside their differences to avoid losing everything...
The Field is our world. The different parts of the field—the Hedgerow, Copse, Riverbank and more—are countries, while the different creatures who call The Field home face the same challenges as we humans do today.
And just like us, these creatures must become ever more reliant upon one another if they are to survive. Through trial and error, the animals of The Field struggle through conquest and bloody fighting before learning how to live together.
Freddie Hamilton grew up in the Tasmanian countryside where his family had a wildlife sanctuary - a veritable antipodean Gerald Durrell. He spent his childhood making friends with unusual animals like quolls, pademelons, corellas, galahs and, of course, Tasmanian devils.
Freddie’s undergraduate studies spanned geography, urban history and the natural environment, as well as creative writing. He completed a post-graduate social science degree in Development Studies at Oxford University.
Freddie lives and works in London. The Field is his first novel.

Reading this to my three children, it reminded me of Watership Down, Farthing Wood and Animal Farm. A modern - and much needed - addition to these classics of children's fiction.
It is worth noting that this is a debut novel. And, frankly it's a cracker. I loved it. It's insightful, especially in the current political world. The use of an animal kingdom to relate to young adults is clever. The writing is engaging and descriptive. The plot will keep you guessing, and without giving it away, the reader won't be a surprise!! It's a great read, young or old. But encourage the young adults of this world to give it go.
This would be a great book for a government class to read and make parallels to today’s times. Freddie Hamilton is obviously very well educated in the area of governments and was able to develop this deep analogy. It was interesting, to say the least, but at times overwhelming. The decisions, negotiations, fighting,…life, I suppose, was a lot. Very thought provoking.
This recent book provides a fascinating and accessible take on an important message. Highly recommend to all ages, a very appealing style of writing makes the book both gripping and interesting. I look forward to more from this exciting young author!!
Great book. Highly encourage not just young adults to read this book and learn about the political landscape through history but is a good book for all ages.
A lovely story about the animals battling for control of the Field. Thanks to Goodreads and author Freddie Hamilton for the opportunity to read this lovely book.
