Tessa has finally made peace with her life as a Variant. She and longtime love Alec are officially a couple, and for the first time, she has everything she wants.
But the air is tense at FEA headquarters. An agent has disappeared, and rogue Variant organization Abel's Army is likely the culprit.
When Tessa is summoned for her second mission, she is unexpectedly launched into a massive conspiracy. Her best friend Holly is kidnapped, and Tessa knows it was meant to be her. But who is after her? And more importantly, why?
When the FEA's efforts to rescue Holly don't yield results, Tessa takes matters into her own hands. Desperate to save her friend and uncover the mystery behind Abel's Army, Tessa launches her own investigation—but nothing could prepare her for what she finds.
Summoning all of her courage and strength, Tessa must decide who can be trusted and what is worth fighting for.
I really enjoyed this. We get to find out about the heroine's family, more about Alex and the fighting sides. It does end on a cliffhanger with as far as I can tell no details of the next book, date, blurb or even plans to write it.

I am loving this new series from C Reilly, the new pen of an all time favorite author. In this second book of the Rules of Deception series, we’re diving straight back into the suspense and mystery we delved into in the first book- with more answers, more challenges, and plenty more questions.
After the conclusion of her impersonation of Madison in the first book, Tessa is diving into a new mission with FAE, one that results in her best friend being kidnapped and Tessa trying to figure out a plan b in order to rescue her. And as the suspense mounts, Tessa uncovers more and more about those around her. Just who can be trusted?
We’ve got so many well constructed twists, complicated characters, and great tension. C. Reilly gives us clues and pieces of this mystery along the way, and meanwhile we get to know the characters even better. Tessa continues to be a captivating and endearing heroine- she’s clever, strong, and courageous. So easy to root for her. And we get a bit more romance, more steam, but we also have a lot of questions about those around Tessa. SO MANY SECRETS AND LIES!
Angst, steam, mystery, and a fast-paced plot, C. Reilly is building such a masterfully told first series. And after that cliffhanger ending, I’m looking forward to the third and final story in this trilogy!
Renegade book is the second book in the Rules of Deception series and a rewrite of Defector, a YA book and the second in the Variants trilogy published in 2014 by Susanne Winnacker. This book is New Adult though. Once more I was able to compare both books as I did with Deceitful. It was even more different than the first book. This book has 31 chapters while Defector has 30 chapters. Quite a bit was added/changed.
Susanne (C. Reilly aka Cora Reilly) never finished the Variants trilogy. I pity the poor souls who were left hanging for a decade because this book ends up in a terrible cliffhanger... C. Reilly better give us the next and final book this time, and if there's more I wouldn't complain.
This book picks up right where we left off in the first book. Tessa was about to go into a helicopter this book starts with her on that helicopter.
This time we get to see more of life at headquarters in Montana than we did in the first book as Tessa was mostly in Oregon.
I would love to see Alec's POV when he realizes Tessa left (with Devon!) and reads her letter.
I have to say these covers are beautiful. Both the first and the second. I found them both quite original and they just capture the vibe of the book quite well.
Renegade is the second book in the Rules of Deception series and leaves me feeling like it finished too soon😢 Tessa has returned from her first mission and is finally with Alec, who she has had feelings for for what feels like forever…but things at the FEA aren’t what they seem….or are they?
Tessa’s loyalties and trust are being tested, especially when secrets surrounding her should have been revealed but also those around her that she trusts, that should’ve been revealed- but aren’t😬 When her best friend Holly is kidnapped, she’s determined to find Holly and make things right❣️
I received an advanced copy and voluntarily leave my honest and I look forward to more in this series especially after that ending❤️
Renegade is the second installment in the Rules of Deception trilogy by C. Reilly and the highly anticipated suspense-packed continuation of Tessa's story. This book had once again a fast-paced and thrilling plot with lots of head-spinning twists and turns and intiguing characters (old and new) whose struggles and inner conflicts felt real and relatable. What I absolutely adore about this and the previous book is the guessing game about everybody's intentions and motives. Many people are not what or who they pretend to be, playing by their own rules and pursuing their own goals. That makes it hard for Tessa and the readers to distinguish friend from foe. That I'm totally invested in this addictive trilogy would be an understatement. C. Reilly has me hooked from the start and I simply can’t get enough of her fabulous writing and entertaining storytelling.
In Renegade Tessa has finally made peace with her life as a Variant and is now in a relationship with her longtime love Alec. When Tessa's second mission goes wrong and her best friend Holly gets kidnapped, Abel's Army (a rogue Variant organisation) is accused to be the culprit. Tessa is sure that it's her they were really after for but she doesn’t know why. When FEA's efforts to rescue Holly don't yield results, Tessa takes matters into her own hands trying to uncover the mystery behind Abel's Army while unmasking and exposing lies that will make her question her loyalty and trust.
Tessa has grown so much as a character. She is not an insecure, easily manipulated young woman anymore. Her confidence has grown and she asks questions instead of believing everything she's been told. I can’t wait to see where her journey is going to take her. I adore this wonderful heroine!
I've thoroughly enjoyed Renegade and highly recommend it! If you're a fan of NA romantic mysteries with supernatural touch then you need to pick up this book! Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. I'm giving this gem 5 well-deserved stars and am now waiting with baited breath for the final installment! Great job dear C. Reilly!!!
In book 2 of the Rules of Deception series, Renegade is exhilarating & unpredictable . It started where Tessa visited the family of the person she impersonated for a mission. She came back in the FEA or the Variant’s Training and Headquarters with Alec whom she loved for years and they started a relationship. All is going well until she was assigned again to another mission in helping FEA to protect an important person. Along with her best friend Holly, who is also a variant but Holly got kidnapped in the event. Tessa decided to take matters in her own hand to rescue her best friend but it was implied that the she was supposed to be the one captured and the reason for the disappearances of other agents. As she struggle to come up with a plan of rescue, Tessa learned the heartbreaking betrayal of the person who she trusted most. The lies she had been told and the reason why she was in FEA. Everything was too much to her and she decided to escape and get answers. There are a lot of revelations along the way but also a lot of questions remains definitely it will all be revealed in the 3rd book. The plot is excellent! I cannot put down the book and my head was spinning with theories. And just like Tessa, I was confused and I seriously don’t know who to trust. I want a redemption arc for A favorite character because I do feel that the character was also used and manipulated or not I don’t know!? The variants or the other characters for this book are interesting and I would love to know more of their own story. It ended with a cliffhanger. Can I scream WTF!?
Overall, C. Reilly’s venture to this genre is worth recommending. Can’t wait to read more!!!
I really enjoyed the first book of this series by Cora but this book took me on a wild ride!
The book starts exactly where we left off. Tessa coming back from Madisons funeral with Alec. We also get to see Tessa romantically with him, something she had been craving for a long time and I was happy she finally got it!
We also get to read about Tessa’s second mission. A mission which doesn’t go very well at all and causes her best friend to get taken by Abel’s army. An organisation that has a bad rep by the FEA.
I never really liked Major’s character. I found he acted like an arse 99% of the time through both books and a lot of it makes sense now after finishing the book.
I’m also curious to see what happens to Devon. I hope he doesn’t get locked up as he really doesn’t deserve it and I also hope that the lies spewed to his family become forgotten.
I’m excited for book three! I would like to see how Tessa is with her reunited family. I’m also curious to see what happens with the FEA!
I can't believe the book ended so quickly! The cliffhangers just left me wanting more.
Tessa has returned to FEA after her mission from the last book but now instead of feeling safe and happy to be home, she is still traumatised and has more questions. The mission has left her with more uncertainties than she would like to think about.
When Tessa's best friend, Holly, is kidnapped, she will do anything to get her back. I felt for Tessa, she is unsure of what is happening and keeps being pushed around by the people she trusts. Whilst trying to find her friend, she is finding characters in her life that were a mystery. She will be forced to face her past and question everything she believed in.
**ARC was generously provided in exchange for my honest review.**
Ah. An amazing… gripping… unputdownable read! This second book in the Rules of Deception series is a brilliant and well-executed continuation from Deceitful.
Whilst I love my sci-fi thrillers and supernatural-themed stories on screen, I admit when it comes to books I haven’t read a lot from these genres. However, these two books from Reilly’s debut paranormal romance series are, in my opinion, the best way to ease into this genre, especially if you’ve been wanting to expand your romance horizons towards the realm of science-fiction. It has such an intricate storyline with plenty of dimension, but doesn’t overwhelm with wordiness or over-the-top details that I find a lot of sci-fi books tend to be. It has a great balance of romance to paranormal.
✔ You have the young, angsty romance element… ✔ Then there’s the mystery surrounding Tessa and her abilities… ✔ The suspense and danger looming from what seems like every direction… ✔ And finally, a diverse cast of secondary characters that bring in more complexity, more curiosity, and more possibilities for an expansive world-building.
Phew! It’s layers upon layers of literary goodness, with this part of the story delving deeper into Tessa’s backstory and superhuman abilities. As I mentioned in my review for Deceitful, I thought this story had strong X-Men vibes, and this book just reiterated that fact for me. The introduction of new characters comes with more unique individuals that I was just as fascinated about as the already existing ones.
It’s well-paced storytelling that builds up as you progress through the book. I was on the edge of my seat for the entirety of the time. If I was nail-biter, I would’ve chewed through my cuticles at how intense this story got.
This part of the story headed towards a direction I had hoped it would after I saw inklings of it in Deceitful and I couldn’t be more giddy to see the turn of events play-out. I didn’t think I could get more addicted to this world but Renegade has amped up the ante! The overall plot is totally unpredictable, you’ll be hard-pressed to figure out which way things will head until you’re right there in the moment. For the majority of the book I felt like I was alongside Tessa in real time for this journey. Road trip!
I don’t read a lot of YA/ NA romances as I once did, so Tessa’s world of angsty, teen drama brings about such nostalgia of youthful friendships, dysfunctional family dynamics, teen rebellion, and all-encompassing secret loves. The characters within are complex and thought-provoking, and the air of uncertainty surrounding each and every one of them is what ultimately makes this book a worthwhile surrender of your time.
This is a continuous storyline and this book ends on big, fat “O” moment that had me immediately wishing that the next book was already here. I found it to be an effortless story to follow with an ominous atmosphere that sets the entire book. It’s told solely from Tessa’s point of view and although I’m used to reading books with dual/ multiple perspectives, I honestly didn’t feel like it was necessary with this particular story as it’s purely from Tessa’s standpoint—her experiences, her inner monologue, her emotions.
Please note, it does contain sensitive subject matters that make be triggering for some readers such as substance abuse, kidnapping, and violence. Take into consideration before starting this series.
With superhuman powers, secret organisations, and a heroes-versus-villains outline… I highly recommend it! There’s romance but it’s not as prominent as what readers of Reilly’s mafia books may be used to. The spice level is low in comparison, but it will leave you pining for more (in a good way)! Reilly definitely has a talent for this genre, and I’m looking forward to seeing more in the future.
I read the first book in this series just after it released expecting it to be a standalone, so imagine my surprise when I got to the end and discovered that it was the first book in a series lol! I not so patiently waited for this book to release and read it as soon as I could! After reading, I can say that the plot of this book actually went in a completely different direction than what I was expecting! I did enjoy it and it only took me a few sittings to read because I didn’t want to put it down! There was also some romance in the plot, but it wasn’t the main focus! I love the romance aspect, so I really hope it plays a bigger role as this series progresses! There was quite a bit of action and suspense in the plot, which added to it and made me enjoy it more! The characters were again amazing and made this book even better! Tessa was again the main character, and I did feel for her in this book because she discovered a lot that she was lied to about and she wanted to find things out on her own terms! I have to be honest and say that I did think that Tessa maybe made some mistakes and this did have an impact on the plot and how it developed! There was a love triangle in this book and the love interests of Tessa were Alec and Devon! Now, Alec was the main love interest of Tessa in the first book and I was expecting him to be again in this book! Alec hid secrets from Tessa in this book and I really wish he had been honest with her! Devon was a newer love interest of Tessa and he was in the first book as well! I liked Devon, but I still wasn't sure if he had an ulterior motive! I guess I'll find out as this series progresses! This book was only written from Tessa’s point of view, which I was expecting because the first book was written from only her point of view! I have to admit that I would have loved this book to have been written from a few other characters point of views because of what happened in the plot and because the characters didn't spend every second of the plot together and they actually spent more of the plot separated! Enough still happened in the plot, even though it was only written through Tessa's eyes! I now can't wait to read the next book in this series! I can't find any information on it and there wasn't anything at the end of this book, so I'm not sure when it's going to release! I'll definitely be anticipating its release and I can't wait to find out what's going to happen after that ending because it was left at the perfect place to lead into the next book! I also love the cover for this book a lot and it would definitely draw me to the book if I didn't already know about the series! The cover also makes more sense now I've read the book and I love how well it represents it!
Renegade is the suspense-packed and absolutely unputdownable book #2 in the Rules of Deception Series by the incredibly talented C. Reilly and starts right where we've been left after book #1 Deceitful.
After completing her first confidential mission to impersonate Madison, a local teenager and the last victim of a brutal serial killer, Tessa is back at FAE quarters again where a new mission is assigned to her. Unfortunately things don't go as planned and her best friend Holly gets kidnapped in the process. While trying to come up with a rescue plan, Tessa will discover a couple of things that will shake her believe in everyone and everything around her - especially her relationship with Alec. The more things come to light, the more she will ask herself - who are the good guys and who are the bad ones?
I was blown away by the excellent writing and highly entertaining plot of Renegade. The story was fast-paced and full of angst. The unexpected twists and turns were never ending and kept me on my toes from start to finish. Like Tessa, I was questioning everything and trying to put all the puzzle pieces together. I love it when a story consumes me this way!
Tessa's journey in this book was a very challenging one. Her feelings and loyalties were constantly put to test. I really felt how torn she felt inside! She's such a strong, loveable heroine who has so much love to give. I just want her to be happy.
Can I say that I absolutely adore Davon?! He's such an amazing guy and I really loved reading more about him in this installment.
Of course the story ends with kind of a cliffhanger. There are still so many questions that need to be answered, but this is what book 3 is for and I'm so looking forward to it! 5 stars for this gem that I’m putting straight on my top favorite reads shelf of 2022. Well done C. Reilly!
Renegade by C. Reilly is the second book in the Rules of Deception Series.
While I believed the first book in the series to have been rather average, I am very happy to have continued on with the series. I am very invested now.
Renegade was perfect. The writing felt different in comparison to the first book (in a positive way), the story line was very good and kept me interested until the very end, and the story had a lot of plot twists that I did not see coming. Also, the story had just the right amount of action.
Tessa finally started her relationship with Alec only to soon find out about secrets kept from her that changed everything about her life. On her mission to find answers, she is faced with some difficult decisions.
Renegade included a trope that I usually greatly dislike, however, C. Reilly made it work for this book and I did not mind it too much. I also really liked Tessa’s character in Renegade. She was very likeable, and focused. The character definitely has shown growth.
I am still completely obsessed with Devon’s character, and I also hope we will be learning more about Zach in the next book.
I don’t believe much more must be said. This book was an adventure, and I can’t wait for the next book in the series to be released. I really want to know what will be happening next.
I would definitely recommend this series!
*** An ARC was kindly provided to me by the author in exchange for an honest review. ***
Renegade is the second instalment for the Rules of Deception series. Which picks up right where it left off in Deceitful and ventures in to the newly established relationship between Tessa and Alec.
It quickly becomes obvious that those whom Tessa relies on hide secrets from her, making it hard to know who to trust and believe. When Tessa is handed another assignment, her closet and best friend Holly is kidnapped like other agents have been. Danger is always looming over the FEA agents lives and the threat of Abel’s army is getting closer and closer.
When it’s revealed that Tessa is the real target they are after, she focuses on rescuing her friend and confidant. On a mission to find her friend, Tessa discovers the hidden secrets and uncovers the betrayal of those closest to her, forcing her to embark on a journey of self discovery to seek answers.
I am eager for the last part of this series to piece together all of the answers and to delve into the mindsets of the other characters mentioned. Another exhilarating read from Reilly, she portrays the story well and makes it easy to follow along.
Arc in exchange for an honest review. Cora has done it again! This series is amazing, I'm so happy she branched out to create this world and plot-line!
The journey I got taken on throughout this entire book was insane! I didn't know what to expect. I'm honestly just as conflicted as Tessa was throughout all of this and even by that ending I still don't know who to trust like what the!
It was amazing, I love the plot it's so original and the characters are so intriguing! I don't think I can wait for the next one!
Something else I loved about this book was the fact that we got more Devon! He was my favourite character from the first book so I loved getting to more of him in this one! I'm so excited to see where the next book heads! I don't know what's going to happen or who to side with! Even from that ending I'm still like what! I need to know what happens next!
Check out this book when it comes out on May 31st!
What a book! Renegade is the second instalment in 'Rules of Deception' series, and I need more! It was a thrilling, gripping, steamy and enrapturing read; I couldn't put it down until I finished it!
Tessa finally was able to gain some closure over her previous mission and start her relationship with Alec, who she had loved for years. However, Tessa's happiness doesn't last as long as she hoped. She experiences heartbreak, betrayal by those closest to her, conflict and finds a new sense of home. She uncovers secrets from her past, and she is on a mission to discover herself.
I loved the plot, with all its twists and turns that left me hanging for more! I can't wait to read more about Alec, Devon, Zach and Abel! They are such intriguing and deep characters; I can't wait to see their character development progress.
Overall, I loved this book and can't wait for part 3!!
Renegade is the second installment in the Rules of Deception series and continues Tessa's story where Deceitful finished. I loved it soooo much, it's so so good, I couldn't put it down for a second.
Tessa started her relationship as a couple with Alec and has already made peace as a variant, but her happiness is soon overshadowed by secrets that are exposed and intrigues and Tessa is caught up in a web of intrigue and lies and she no longer knows who to trust.
This is a steamy, intriguing, angst, and interesting story, twists I didn't see coming left me on the verge of a heart attack. Renegade is everything I expected and more, the suspense had me on the edge of my seat from start to finish, if you like paranormal stories, with twists, secrets and intrigue, this is perfect for you.
Renegade is the second book in the Rules of Deception series by Cora Reilly.
This is a high anticipated continuation from the first book in the series. This book is unpredictable and fast-paced that will have you trying to read the entire book in one sitting. This has a paranormal theme.
Tessa is at the FAE quarters when a new mission is assigned to her; however numerous plots and twists arises. The questions of loyalty is in play.
I love this series! It is so different from my normal read. There were many unexpected situations that kept me on my toes.
Keep expanding C. Reilly, you are doing amazing!
I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily leaving a review.
This is the second book in this series, it's a fantasy x paranormal romance, and is book #2 in the Rules of Deception series and picks up right where book 1 ended.
Tessa knows that something isn't right and she knows she's being lied to, especially by the people who are meant to love her the most. When she finds out all the secrets and lies that Alex and Major have lied about she can't take anymore. After her mission goes wrong and her friend is taken she takes thinks into her own hands.
I couldn't really get into this second book which was a bit disappointing. But I do love how much Tessa has grown as a character and how much more confident she is with her gift. I do love how this author writes and her style as always but I just couldn't connect with this story I felt it lacked the suspense of the first book.
AHHHHH, that cliffhanger we ended on was perfect!!!! This is the second installment in Tessa’s journey, and one where she finds out more about her past. This was fast paced and had me completely invested in her story. It is full of twists and turns, and like her, you aren’t sure what is real, who to trust, and where to go. Are the bad guys the good guys? Are the good guys really bad? What is going on???? This isn’t a romance, though there are elements of a romance there, it is a psychological mystery with people with paranormal abilities, and I couldn’t put it down and need more now!
Violet has everything she wants for the first time in her life. She is a couple with Alec, the man she's loved for so long, and has accepted her life as a Variant. But when an agent disappears, and her best friend is kidnapped, she begins to question everything she knows. Determined to make her own investigation, she discovers that her whole life was a lie, and she can't trust anyone. Renegade is unpredictable and action packed!
Yes yes yes yes! Words cannot describe how much love I have for this world!
These characters find a way of burrowing themselves into my heart and I know I'll be thinking about them for a long time!
The angst, secrets, betrayals, and truths in this installment had me flipping those pages like a mad woman and I can't wait to find out what's in store for Tessa now!
I loved that we got more of Devon in this book too! 😍
This is not my normal jam in genre but honestly it’s really good. Cora brings her special brand of character development to create the worlds of the FEA and Abel’s Army. You start to see and feel the conflict that Tessa has to find her identity and to know who to trust. It’s compelling and you don’t really know who are the heroes and the villains. It’s a great suspense book.
Cora..... I need more ... !!! Oh how I've really enjoyed reading this book, and it's predecessor..... Please try not to keep us waiting too long Pretty please with cherries on top!!!
Still waiting for book 3! Cliffhanger at the end 🥹
PS: Am I the only one that wants Devon and Tessa to be together? 🫠 Because I have been loving his character since book 1 😩☝🏻 I really hope they end up together because (this is my personal view) I’m not that into Alec’s character huhuhu
