What a marvellous discovery! Although published in 1927, this book shows such a modern writing style that I would have never suspected it to be, not only interesting for its subject, but intriguing and fun as well. I had a great time reading it.

Απιστευτες περιγραφές τρομερές λετπομέρειες για τους λάτρεις του Βυζαντίου. Άλλα με δεν μου άρεσε τα συμπεράσματα που βγάζει ο συγγραφέας.

Oltre le guerre, gli imperatori, le disquisizioni teologiche ci sono anche loro, queste figure di donne bizantine di nascita o "di adozione", che hanno avuto un peso importante nella storia di Costantinopoli. Questo libro è stato scritto all'inizio del '900, ma è fresco, avvincente e godibile. Dihel si preoccupa innanzitutto di rileggere la storia delle imperatrici al di là dell'immagine sensuale e decadente che è stata attribuita loro; tentativo che rende la narrazione efficace, anche se risente della preoccupazione un po' bigotta di restituire loro una qualche moralità. Ma è divertente anche questo, se non sono perdute devono per forza essere piissime: del resto -afferma Dihel - che possiamo pretendere, rimangono pur sempre delle donne!
