Beautiful, Violent is the first book in a new set by Liz Salem. This storyline focuses on Tove, a beautiful, young woman trying to find her way through a childhood trauma.
Tove has grown up privileged, but few in her life understand that a horrific incident ruined her childhood and left her mom dead. Tove trusts few people outside of her dad and her best friend, Rigger. Rigger is a guarded older man that taught Tove everything she knows about protecting herself and wreaking havoc on the bad guys. She's used this knowledge to systematically hunt and get revenge for the incident that left her motherless, but the main person on her hit list remains elusive.
Enter Ben, a part-time app developer, part-time contractor, who seemingly has a direct line to the mysterious King, the ringleader of the trafficking ring Tove has dedicated her time to destroying. Tove soon learns that Ben, Rigger, and even her father, are not all they seem.
I think Liz did an amazing job with the relationship dynamics in this book. I loved seeing how Tove interacted with the other main characters. I think starting the book showing Tove in a relationship with another woman spoke to the level of trauma Tove experienced and how much work she still needs to do to heal. Tove herself bothered me a bit, however. Her recklessness and questionable actions made it hard for me to believe she had been able to eliminate as many men as she had to check people off her hit list. She plays with her food a bit too much, so to speak. I'm interested in seeing how things play out after the bombshell she got regarding her father's girlfriend, Greer, and with how that cliffy pans out.
