Patrik Conroy has just been dragged through a portal to a magical universe that operates like a video game. Apparently, some wizard thinks he's destined to save the world.
There's just one problem.
The wizard didn't live long enough to tell him what he needed to save it from. Or that the resident giant spiders were friendly and just looking for a hug. Now the spiders are dead, the local villagers have lost their only source of income, and Patrik needs to pretend he doesn't know how all this happened.
A tall order for a community college student in his fifth year of a three year degree, who hasn’t played a video game in over a decade.
Aaron Hodges was born in 1989 in the small town of Whakatane, New Zealand. He studied for five years at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor's of Science in Biology and Geography, and a Masters of Environmental Engineering. After working as an environmental consultant for two years, he now spends his time traveling the world in search of his next adventure.
LitRPG has become one of my very favourite genres to read, but this book must be the most hilarious one I have read by far and I really loved reading it. Patrik is a real noob and he has no idea of what is going on, seems he wasn’t even a gamer back home, so when he is suddenly transported to a completely different realm by an ancient wizard and finds himself in an enchanted forest he has no clue what to do. When his stats start to appear in his vision and his PQA starts to talk to him in his head he thinks he is going crazy, then his wizard, the one who had brought him through a portal dies. Poor Patrik, from thereon his alignment is a negative and dark one, and he is blamed for horrors he would have never willfully committed. Fate, the goddess was angry that the wizard was trying to change the future of the realm and she warned that this could only bring about chaos and boy was she right. Wherever Patrik went, and no matter his good intentions chaos followed in his footsteps and people died. Now in this realm four different species lived, humans, elves, dwarves and dragons and they mainly got on well together though prejudices were not far behind. Patrik had been summoned in order to rid the world from the Dark Lord Malus who was a tyrant and hated by the people, but how on earth the wizard chose Patrik is a real mystery! Battles with giant arachnids, mermaids, disgruntled sailors and goblins are a few of the adventures Patrik and the team of adventurers he teams up with encounter during their travels on their way to Bledross. This is a really fun read and I cannot wait to read book 2 and catch up with more disastrous adventures with Patrick and his very sarcastic and witty PQA, Steve. So bring it on Aaron Hodges.
First, I would like to thank Aaron Hodges for the privilege of being part of his ARC team (what an absolute honor) I am leaving this review purely of my own volition.
Hodges has done it again. Another home run, clear out of the stadium.
This book took me longer to review, unfortunately due to school. But once I took a break, I finished this in less than day.
This is my first LITRPG Novel and I must say I was thoroughly entertained. Patrick has been just snatched from Earth and found to have a talking PQA in his head. (Which he gives an incredibly common name, however it is not particularly great about helping him when it counts)
He has no idea what he is doing in this "new" world only that he has basically got to survive.
Instead of being like King Midas (where everything he touches turns to gold) he is more like King doom. (Everything he touches turn to crap)
Finally, he gets some friends (Well! There are three of them, let us just say 1 is a friend) let's just say, once again no one teaches him the rules of friendship in this "new" world.
So many times, I literally busted out laughing, the writing is absolutely superb.
Totally what I would expect from Hodges, as usual I was not disappointed.
I love how he is able to use modern cliches and T.V shows to make a point. The characters are so believable, you just wind up wanting to hug Patrick.
The name may throw you a bit, but do not let that fool you at all.
Rather amusing story about an earthling dropped into a world where, as the story unfolds, seem to be backwards from what you would expect. Spiders are friendly (well, probably, we don't actually know that for sure, since the main character killed them all), Princesses can ride, but normal people can't (it's inhumane or something), and the evil mastermind the main character is supposed to kill already knows all about him. (Of course, his youngest daughter wants to learn from the main character on how to be evil, since her attempts aren't working out so well). It makes for a rather amusing tale, friends swear to take him down, evil demons pair up with him, and even wizards get kicked out of their homes all by what appears to be happenstance, and the main character is definitely the agent of chaos that makes it all happen. The author is right, this one is amusing, and so completely off the wall, you've got to read this one if you're a LitRPG fan, you're not going to believe half the things that happen in this story. I sure hope the author is hard at work on the next one, I sure don't want to miss it for sure.

Unique with lots of action adventure and a book not to be missed.
As a self proclaimed satire book, it reads really well. The misfortune of Patrik is laughable and how he slowly becomes more and more evil inadvertently. It reminds me of a D&D campaign where the party slowly realizes they what's evil in the world, even as they try to act good. The inadvertent acts that continue to happen with the worst of luck keeps the laughs coming.
Hilarious! Hodges surprised me with this departure from his more traditional fantasy genre. The hero has a great heart and makes every possible wrong decision. It’s written as if he’s fallen into a video game and he doesn’t know how to play. I laughed out loud and devoured the book in one sitting! I definitely recommend it. I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest review
The writer made the MC unlikable he was a liberal arts major in a 2 year college and a liberal that had homicidal tendencies the "assistant" was unlikable instead of helping he caused all the problems .I wonder why the writer does not out any of his characters in his own country instead of using the West Coast of the US!
The snarky interface has been done to death. And that seems to be all that this is. Unlikable MC, unlikable interface, uninteresting story as far as I can tell. The best thing about this book is that it's a quick read. An hour and some change reading off and on, so not too much of my life wasted. Tom out
Stupid unlikeable MC, with sound effects. Deserves 1 start just for having sound effects.
I don't understand why authors outside the US keep writing American characters when they don't have a clue. Or, maybe I am wrong and people in Portland, Oregon walk around saying "bloody hell", spell like the British, and call each other 'mate'.
Nothing funny about this book. It’s basically a liberal agenda put in novel form. Keep your politics to yourself and just write a good story. It’s clear the author has adopted liberal ideas of the homeless and criminals without ever having had contact or exposure with them. Write about what you know, not about what you know nothing about.
Help! My Wizard Mentor Had A Heart Attack... Patrick OMG! This book was so hilariously funny, as the MC just kept bumbling everything cluelessly! I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The title is the first horrible joke played on our antihero, who proceeds to make a serries of terrible mistakes stumbling his way through a new world that he cannot comprehend.
Above par writing, very human characters, and a lot of demented humor make this an enjoyable read, especially for those who've read a few LitRPGs and are ready for something... delightfully different ;).
I've Lover all the previous Books by Aaron Hodges, but sorry not this one I normally don't want the Book to Finish, Not this One I had to really stick to it to Finish Laurie S
A very immature Patrik was brought from Earth in a portal by a wizard that died after sending the magic to get Patrik into a universe video game. Not knowing how video games really worked there was a voice that came with the game and could tell Patrik what he could or couldn't do. When he landed on solid ground the wizard was dead so he took his clothes and robe. Giant spiders was going to attack him and not knowing anything he found a blade in the robe. As time goes on he kills a lot because he doesn't really know what to do and gets in lots of trouble on his mission.
