Eilidh Lathan is bound to the Aerie by two things—the echo in her blood of her mother’s healing talent, and her love for one man. But he is unaware that he has claimed her heart. If only she had the courage to tell him—and he felt the same.
Bhaltair Lathan’s intimidating stature makes him an ideal chief guard for the clan. But when it comes to Eilidh, the braw man does his best to be gentle. No matter that he treats her like spun glass, Bhaltair believes that she will never see him as a lover, but will forever view him as a warrior to be feared.
When Eilidh is assaulted by a visiting guardsman and left bruised and shaken, she’s mortified that Bhaltair is the one who saves her from a worse fate. Having seen her at her weakest, Bhaltair wants to hunt down her attacker, but fears losing any chance of gaining her heart if he surrenders to his vengeful fury. Can the timid healer and the clan’s most fearsome warrior find a love that will bind them forever?

By now, whenever I see "highland" in the title and it's a romance it's a no brainer for me. I immediately add it and read it. In this case, I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book through NetGalley. Historical romance set in medieval Scotland it's the recipe for an enjoyable read. This one though went from enjoyable to can't-put-this-down with its touch of forbidden love between the Laird's daughter and his chief of guards and all the longing and scorching desire that lead to quite a few spicy scenes. I didn't expect this to be as sweet and hot as it was. Bhaltair's devotion to Eilidh left me wishing for a Highlander of my own. One who says "no one touches you and lives to tell the tale", you know what I mean? Personally, I'm partial to the Scottish language and culture so the fact that I learned new words and there was a historical subplot was just the cherry on top. I've come to realize that the Highland myths and stories were embedded with magic and magical creatures and this is something that you see in this story too. I honestly recommend this if you like the genre. It's part of a series but can be read as a standalone too.
1500's Scotland. Long in love with the chief guard, Eilidh Lathan hopes he will finally see her as a grown woman. Bhaltair Lathan, chief guard, is in love with Eilidh, but must keep his distance. As a laird's daughter, what chance would he have to marry her when she will probably be married to another clan for an alliance? Everything changes when he is charged with her protection traveling to another clan. Eilidh is attacked on their journey and Bhaltair becomes the powerful warrior to save her, but is injured in the fight. Eilidh's gift of healing becomes less of a secret when she heals Bhaltair. Much care for her safety becomes imperative when those from the south are burning witches. Eilidh must have trust in his softer side before giving her heart. Moves at a fast pace with a lot of action good and bad leaning more to the dark side. Open bedroom door. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
You have to read this most intriguing story. The plot was engaging as well as entertaining. Bhaltair and Elijhah are wonderful. Their love story was a slow process, but all that happens in the story, makes their story all the exciting to read, The books plot is logical and with some realism to it. I read a lot of information of the Highlands and what the people of the Scottish land faced during this time period. The characters are all intriguing and adds that suspense and thrill to the story. For me the book is easy to read and follow along. I appreciate that the writer kept the book simple with the dialogue and narrative. I give this book two snaps and a twist… until next time my fellow readers… read on! I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Book: Highland Echo Author: Willa Blair Series: Highland Talents #5 Publisher: Oliver Heber Books Release Date: April 25, 2023 Book Length: 250 pages Overall Rating: 5/5 Stars Blog Rating: 5/5 Saltire Flags
Scotland, 1539
Eilidh Lathan is linked through the Aerie by the echo she has through her mother's blood where she inherited her healing talent. Bhaltair is the formidable Captain of her father’s guard, her father is also the chieftain of the Lathan clan. Both Eilidh and Bhaltair both think they have unrequited feelings for each other. For shy and fearful Eilidh, she only has room in her heart for only one man who will never look at her more than a job by her family. As they have a new mission where Bhaltair is hired to protect their precious daughter and clan’s healer.
Bhaltair feels his chieftain’s shy daughter and healer fears him and only sees him as a warrior who defends and kills. Furthermore she will never look at him as the lover he wants to be for Eilidh. He also fears his chieftain will arrange a strong marriage alliance with someone with a high noble status. This will definitely destroy Bhaltair, so he keeps his feeling for this shy healer to himself being she is his chieftain’s daughter. It is another reason his feelings as well as Eilidh's feelings are kept secretive, plus he remembers her being afraid of him. As he kills to protect the clan and she heals to save and protect their clan. Like his opposite, but was the clan’s chief guard, a man to be frightened of? What Eilidh doesn't realize is that Bhaltair has similar feelings for her but thinks she is too high above his status being a Laird’s daughter.
Now with her mother ill she must be the Lathan clan's sole healer and go help a toddler of a nearby clan who happens to be their Laird’s granddaughter. On top of that there are a group of lowlanders who are witch hunters hunting innocent women calling them witches. Often female healers are often mistaken as witches, beaten and brutally murdered by these crazy fanatics by burning, hanging or drowning these innocent women.
Soon Eilidh is in a dangerous situation and the only man strong enough to save her will be the man she loves. Will he be able to save her in time from these and admit his true feelings in his heart? Can the shy magical healer and the formidable braw warrior ever open their hearts and take a chance on love, read and find out.
Willa Blair pens another phenomenal masterpiece in the finale of her infamous Highland Talents Series. I have been swept away by each book of this magnificent spellbinding series. Highland Echo centers around unrequited love on both sides but is filled with magic, family, friendship, secrets, healing, love, plus attempted murder and so much more. It also weaves true history with a fictional story that will blow readers away! I will definitely miss this series but look forward to Willa Blair’s next Scottish highland adventure!
Disclaimer: I received an advance reader’s copy from Oliver-Heber publishing. I voluntarily agreed to do an honest, fair review and blog through Netgalley. All thoughts, ideas and words are my own.
This is part of a series and I think the reader would benefit from reading in order. This family has many unusual gifts that they must keep secret or they could be wiped out.
As the story unfolds there is more to our h's healing powers that slowly are revealed. She is sent to her father's close friends clan because her mother is ill and a child is in need of healing. The H has feelings for the h but keeps them close to his vest because he feels he is unworthy with no land or title. The h has had feelings for the H for years but is afraid of his fighting abilities and mean streak. He is a warrior, he's not supposed to be sweet on the field of battle. She fretted over this a little too much.
On the way to the other clan, she is attacked. When we are told of her one particular gift, I felt she could have saved herself. Yes, later it was touched on why she couldn't but more needed clarification. I must admit when we are told of this gift it was fantastic - such a unique twist and how the clan used this to save innocents.
Story is filled with suspense, violence, intrigue, twists, and many surprises, and romance that builds slowly. You will have to suspend your belief on all the magic this family holds. But, my of my, it made for a very interesting and thrilling read. Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 4 out of 5 and filled with love and passion.
No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and some steam. Loved the epilogue 5 years in the future. I received ARC and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)
Eilidh is the youngest daughter of the Laird of Lathan. She has inherited her Mother's healing powers and when the Fletcher clan asks her Mother to come and heal their daughter, Eilidh is sent instead as her Mother is too tired from all of the healing she did at a recent battle that their soldiers recently partook in. Eilidh is not a person who likes to be in the limelight and even though she has trained with her Mother for a long time, she is still nervous of taking care of such an important task of trying to heal the Laird's daughter. Bhaltair is the head guard of the Lathan clan and he is told to escort Eilidh to Fletchers, to guard her, and return her safely. At the same time, there are small groups of men trying to come and burn all the witches (what they considered anyone who could heal like Eilidh and her Mother) These men create a lot of problems for the clans and Bhaltair is asked to clear them out with the help of some of the Fletcher men. During all of this it's revealed that Eilidh and Bhatair have hidden feelings for each other for many years. It is a sweet story on how that awarness comes about to the two of them of how they feel, escpecially with all of the action going on with the Lowlanders and protecting everyone. This is a very well written story, with great characters! I love how they are introduced and developed and how well the story flows. There are a couple of plot twists too! You will not want to put this one down until you have finished it!!!
I’m out with the flu, so I guess it’s only fitting to read a romance where the heroine is a healer. Plus I have absolutely nothing else to do but lay in bed all cozy with warm tea and read, so why not.
From the very beginning, I felt a little confused and lost. It felt like I’d stumbled part way through a story and should already know all these characters well when I was only reading them for the first time. Which made sense when I found out it was part of a series.
I’m a total sucker for mutual pining and when it’s paired with a forbidden romance, it’s my catnip. It was obvious from the beginning how much Eilidh and Bhaltair were enamoured with each other, and all I wanted was for them to hurry up and be together. Their romance was sweet but I wish they'd had more moments where they showed each other genuine affection instead of just being told that they liked each other. But the most annoying parts were Eilidh’s constant, very repetitive doubts about Bhaltair and his violence when it was obvious to literally every other character that he would rather die before he even thought to hurt her.
I didn’t expect there to be magic or all the action we got, but it certainly made things more interesting. It was easy enough to follow the story, even with my foggy flu-brain.
*Thank you to the publishers and NetGalley for giving me an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All my thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Having trained under her mother for years, Eilidh is being tasked with using her gift for healing to aid her Uncle Jamie’s granddaughter, Orla. The baby is having difficulty absorbing her food and is too small for her age. Today, this would be called “failure to thrive” and can be caused by a myriad of medical conditions. To accompany and protect Eilidh on her journey to the Fletcher clan, Bhaltair, the chief guard of the Lathan clan, has been requested by Eilidh’s father, Laird Toran. This is a lovely, slow burn romance in the Highlands. Eilidh and Bhaltair have always yearned for each other from afar, but neither acted on their feelings based on their own insecurities. Each now secretly hopes that this trip will enable them to initiate and explore their mutual desires. The journey will indeed provide the opportunities, but there will be many challenges along the way: other lasses’ interest in Bhaltair, being attacked by ruffians, the lengthy process of healing Orla, and uncovering a plot by Lowlanders to kill witches. The tale is filled with action, intrigue, a flourishing romance and the reveal of the extent of Eilidh’s healing powers. This is a well written novel with a unique plot and admirable characters, other than the villains, of course. Enjoy this wonderful book with cider and honey biscuits. I did receive an ARC from Booksprout and I am leaving an unbiased review voluntarily.
A Fantastic Highland Healers Romance: This amazing series continues with Bhaltair and Eilidh who each have had dreamy hidden desirous feeling for each other for many years but neither had the courage to admit it. He thought her shy and afraid of him, and she thought that such a handsome warrior would not be interested in her. Read on as they travel far to help a desperate child with an unknown illness and discover an amazing story that has every emotion you want to read in a story along with Highland secrets of special powers, finding the love they always desired while conquering their fears, a kidnapping, witch hunters. A firestorm of sweet kisses, sizzling confessions. This story will take us through many horrendous situations that can bring them closer or tear them apart. Both characters are strong and dependable in their own right and what they both go through in this story is incredibly tense, scary, gut wrenching, heart pounding, before they reach a very happy ending. Excellent epilogue. This story can be read as a standalone. It does have a large cast of reoccurring characters from the previous books in the series, but this story is mainly about Bhalair and Eiliana. I truly enjoyed reading this thrilling story. Mature Advisory: I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced coy for my honest opinion.
This Highland romance series features the children of the Laird and Lady of the Lathan clan in Scotland during the 1500s. Each of the children inherited special powers and abilities from their mother, but the powers vary from healing, foreseeing the future and others. The special powers add elements of magic, freshness and fun to the series, especially when the adult children start honing their skills and gaining confidence. Eilidh inherited her mother's healing skills as well as another special talent. She is the youngest and struggles to be accepted as an adult woman until she is asked to take a journey to a neighboring clan to heal a child. This is also a sweet and compelling love story between her and her clan's chief guardian, a gentle giant named Bhaltair. During a time (1500s) when marriages in the noble classes were usually about power, money and politics rather than love and attraction, it is refreshing to read about a seemingly mismatched romance between a gentle lady and a fierce warrior. There is plenty of suspense, action and drama but overall this is a wonderful love story.
The book blurb for this book intrigued me. Of course any book with a Highland hero gets my attention. Once I began reading I wasn't sure about Eilidh's healing powers, but the book was so good. I liked the characters immediately. I was fortunate enough to get an ARC of Highland Echo and it is great as a stand alone, but with the mention of other characters having had their own adventures, I feel like it may be part of a series. I will definitely be looking into that because I will read the series. As the characters already knew each other, their was that underlying attraction neither of them were acting on yet. The slow build up was a wonderous torture. Then it began to really heat up. Bhaltair may be a strong warrior but he was patient and loving with Eilidh who took a while to really come out of her shell. The whole book flowed at a smooth pace. It did speed up at times, but never slow and dull in my opinion.
I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley for an honest review.
Although the pace of Highland Echo was a bit slow in the beginning due to back story and excessive thoughts, the plot still captured me and held my attention. I liked both of the lead characters, and even the supporting cast held their own and had interesting personalities. By the mid point I was more than curious as to how the author, Willa Blair, was going to pull off a HEA. The remainder of this Highland tale did not disappoint, and the ending was so sweet and satisfying.
Content 411: In addition to some mild secular and religious swearing, this book also contains passionate kissing, fondling and a marital sex scene.
Disclosure: I received a complementary copy of this book from the author via Booksprout. I am voluntarily submitting my honest review.
Love a great Highlander tory and this one did not disappoint. Part of a series, yet can stand alone. Bhaltair is Chief of the Laird’s guards, Eilidh is the Laird’s daughter. Eilidh is a healer and travels to another clan to assist, Bhaltair is assigned to protect her. Eilidh is attacked on their journey and Bhaltair gets injured protecting her. Join them as they journey to their HEA, a journey that is ot easy filled with many obstacles and risks.
My first book by Willa Blair, but not the last. I am now looking for more books by this author.
Thank you NetGalley, Willa Blair and Xpresso Book Tours for the ARC of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Once again this author has done what she does best and that is write a wonderful romance set in the Highlands with an interesting plot, a sexy hero, a lovely heroine and a few bad men thrown in for good measure. The story is easy to read, a bit nail biting at times with secondary characters that are easy to get to know who add so much to the story. I have enjoyed this entire series and have loved getting to know this family. The author has given each one of the Lathan siblings a wonderful journey to their happy ever after and I have enjoyed each one. I do recommend Highland Echo as well as the first four books in this series.
🌟 🌟🌟 3 stars CLever use of certain historic issues to use in the story like the lowlands and the highlanders clashing over a difference of beliefs, etc. Loved the magical aspect. Certainly want to read more. Really enjoyed the dual POV and how the author was not afraid to touch on their strengths and weaknesses as people in their areas of expertise; the warrior with a soft heart and the healer on her first real mission. Bodyguard trope A look at how the witch hunts first touched the Highlands and its scary possibilities. It was a steamy book, but there was something missing. A lack of real stuffing, it was like a hollow turkey at Christmas. Thankyou negalley for allowing me to read this.
I enjoyed reading this because I love that their circumstances forced them to acknowledge their mutual attraction and their emotions for one another are heartfelt. Their both are great characters and just match up so well. Very supportive of one another, protective and willing to sacrifice for one another and those they love. They manage to find their happy place amongst the tribulations of the highland dangers, such a sweet romance, both strong in their own way and interesting paranormal elements. Lovely story, enjoyed reading it, enticed from beginning to end. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Audiobook: This was my first experience with Willa Blair's work, and it was charming. Although this was the fifth book in the series, each book can be read as a standalone. Eilidh was assaulted. Bhaltair, the clan's fearsome warrior, wanted to bring justice to the man who had hurt Eilidh. The setting was lovely. There were some intense scenes. I enjoyed the healing magic. There were some sensual moments. I'm looking forward to the other books in this series. Dave Gillies' narration was great, and his performance added to the story's entertainment. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review which reflected my opinions.
Having read the first four books in the Highland Talents Heritage series, I was ready for a good story. It was a great story. It was an on-the-edge-of-my-seat, oh-no-I-can't-read-further-but-can't-put-it-down and an oh-what-a-romance story. It was an I'm-sorry-it-ended-when-is-the-next-one story.
It is important to note that Eilidh and Bhaltair's story stood beautifully on its own. However, the reading experience was even richer because I had read the first four in the series.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I have really enjoyed this book and the the other four in this series of highland talents heritage. This book is about Eilidh and Bhaltair she is a healer and he is the chief guard who have secretly loved each for year’s. The book has a great storyline and well worth a read
I enjoyed many aspects of this story. The characters were great and the author pulled you into the tale quickly. As in all good stories there is a dose of healthy tension, adventure and signs of the times… in this case it was the misunderstanding of healing and witches. A quick and fun read.
She had loved Bahltair for years. He had loved her too but neither one would admit it. Until she had to go to the Fletcher keep to heal a child and he was sent to guard her. This is one of the best series I've read and my introduction to MS Willa Blair. I'm so glad I found her and I'm looking forward to more
I love a good Medieval Scottish romance every so often and this one hit all the right spots. Well crafted, wonderful characters and the bond between Eilidh and Bhaltair is strong. Eilidh and her warrior find a deep and forever love.
This is a good story. It deserves to be presented in perfection, for which is needed an editor and a proofreader. Errors in continuity and word issues are not rampant, but are present.
With unusual healing powers held by the leading Female and her family members, plus highland unrest, challenges await. There are those hunting or witches, others needing to be healed, and true love to find. An enjoyable read.
Eilidh is the last of the siblings to find love. Bhaltair is a great warrior. The story is filled by action and intrigue. Bhaltair has to protect Eilidh when she is threatened and come under attack. All the while they are finally bringing their attraction into the open. This is a good story that wraps up the series nicely.
Having a special talent in her blood and love in her heart for one man. Does he feel the same, will there be a chance of romance for them. Incredible story.
This book was addicting in the best way possible. I love how the MH and MM end up together. The book isn’t rushed at all and has a great plot. It definitely keep you interested the whole time.
