"Craig Morgan’s memoir will move you. I was inspired." --Blake SheltonCountry music icon, army veteran, father, outdoorsman—Craig Morgan shares all aspects of his life, revealing stories even his most avid fans don’t know.
Written with Jim DeFelice, author of the #1 New York Times bestseller American Sniper
In 1989, as US news outlets declared an end to Operation Just Cause, Craig Morgan was part of an elite group of military operatives jumping into the jungle along the Panamanian border on a covert operation. Fans know the country music star from his hit songs and acclaimed albums, but there’s a lot more to him—a soldier who worked with the CIA in Panama, an undercover agent who fought sex traffickers in Thailand, and a dedicated family man who lives the values he sings.
Craig details these many facets of his life and more in God, Family, Country. An on-stage appearance with his father’s band at age ten may have planted the seeds for life as a country star, but first he trained as a paratrooper in the army. After earning numerous distinctions, his path to sergeant major was all but assured. Then came a momentous he left the active military to pursue music.
With unwavering support from his wife and a pack of part-time jobs, he toughed out the lean years and achieved his first success with the poignant ballad “Almost Home.” Other hits soon followed, from party songs like “Redneck Yacht Club” to the soul-rending “The Father, My Son, and the Holy Ghost.” Born from the anguish of his son Jerry’s passing, the song’s tribute has consoled and inspired millions across the world.
Duty to country has been a constant throughout his life and globe-spanning career. In 2006, as “That’s What I Love about Sunday” topped country radio charts, Craig was riding in a convoy of Humvees in Iraq. An avid outdoorsman, a former sheriff’s deputy who’s still a member of the auxiliary, and always a husband and father first, Craig Morgan will inspire you with his life lived by the deepest God, family, country.
It waz amazing to learn all that Craig Morgan has done servings our country as soldier. It was nice to also learn how he became a country music song writer and artist. The stories of how we create a song and it was home for also very good. I have always liked Craig Morton's songs, so learning, The stories of how they were created As well as the videos if there was one made me laugh, or cry depending on the song in question. I was heartbroken for him when I learned about the loss of his son, and amazed at the strength he has in his faith. You can feel throughout the whole book that he really does mean God family and country in that order.
I knew Craig Morgan was in the military but had no idea of the extent of his service or the number of years he actually served. I lost my son in 2011 in a drowning incident on a river in Oklahoma and he, too, had the heart of a servant. He was a Marine who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and was scheduled to return to Afghanistan the next month in his civilian job of Ammunition Inspector. Craig’s description of the grief over his son’s loss was very much like my own. Thank you for sharing your story.
Although our experiences are somewhat different I felt I was there with him during his time in the military. As I am a retired Major. I first saw Craig preform at the Indiana State fair some time between 2006 and 2009, keeping track of that part of my life is difficult. Seems to stem from the loss of my daughter to cancer in 2000. I think I see why your music has had such an effect on me even though I have missed a large amount of it.
I had heard a few songs but didn’t know who Craig Morgan was. I gave the Army National Guard 40 years my two sons served in Iraq and Afghanistan, one of them with me in 2004 Fallujah and Ramadi. We were Combat Heavy Engineers attached to the First MEF…..My youngest son, a CW3 invited us to a Craig Morgan concert and I was hooked. I’ve been to hundreds of shows but this was the best I’ve ever attended. Craig is always playing in my truck, once I started the book I couldn’t put it down! What an amazing person and career!
I gained a new appreciation for Craig when I heard the hit song “God, my son and the Holy Ghost. Then watched Beyond the Edge and gained insight into who he is as a person. I really enjoyed his story from military to country star. My only disappointment was in the lack of faith throughout the book.
I liked this book because it was a true accounting of Craig Morgan's life so far as a soldier, musician, and family man. I would recommend this book to anyone who has heard of Craig and wants a deeper look,at who he is.
Being a very big fan of Craig Morgan. I really liked hearing his story and I would definitely recommend it to men with all the military and hunting, fishing & other sports he has and is doing in his life. A man of great faith, family and country as well as a great singer-songwriter.
I wanted to read this book after I saw Craig Morgan @ Ryman in November 2022. I had always been a fan from a distance and admired that he was an enlisted Army hero turned country music star. I knew he had lost a child, but didn’t really know the details. His song The Father, My Son the Holy Ghost just made be bawl my eyes out that night @ Ryman. I really really loved his book. He is one ambitious guy who still has his family, god and community his center.
