A visual exploration honoring and celebrating vintage synths, with a forward by Vince Clark. Authored and curated by well-known synth expert and music technology writer "Dr. Mike Metlay, SYNTH GEMS 1 takes readers on a chronological journey through a unique selection of over 60 synthesizers - some popular, some rare, all beautiful.
This is a very pleasant book that presents a good overview of the most significant keyboard-based synthesizers in history, gives nice summaries of how they came to be, and some interesting facts around the people, the technology, and how the devices in question function.
This isn't a book of fiction with any plot twists, it's also not a biography with great obstacles the protagonist overcame. You won't learn how to be a better spouse from this book, and it won't teach you any marketable skills. But it sure is a very pleasant illustrated love letter to sound-making machines and the people behind them.
A serene read + eye candy. Highly recommended if you're into synths.
