Charged with finding out the culprits name for this travesty is Jeffrey , his male acquaintances are not happy and want this publication to cease. What happens when Jeffrey falls for Phoebe? Read on yourself and find out . It’s fun and enjoyable to read , very tastefully,And well written . I for one loved the book and would recommend it . I received an advance copy of this book and chose to submit a review
Phoebe had a very unconventional upbringing and lives with an eccentric Aunt! Her parents left her well off and with her own income! Jeffrey is a Marquess and antiquated ideas of a woman's role in life! Two very different people! Phoebe is outspoken and cares none for Jeffrey rank or social status! These two quickly learn there is a thin line between arguments and attractions!

Jeffrey & Phoebe’s first meeting ends with her slapping him, they disagree on so much but physically are strongly attracted to each other. I found Jeffrey to be very pompous & arrogant at the start of the book but the more I read the more I came to like him & found that he was open to change & willing to listen to different points of view. I loved Phoebe, a strong independent woman with decided opinions. In some ways the pair were like chalk & cheese, however the more they fell in love the more they were willing to see the others point of view, especially Jeffrey. Their burgeoning relationship was highly entertaining it had me laughing, sighing & welling up. The pace of the book was very good & I read it in well under a day as I found it to be an engrossing read. Another well written captivating read from the author & as it’s the start of a new series there are four sisters & four friends who I love to have their stories. My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
Scandalous! Regency Romance💕 , Women's Rights Adventure. The woman💃 character in this novel is driven to change the oppressive laws of the era pertaining to women's rights or lack of rights. One way she can help set the wheels of change in motion is to start a weekly newspaper dedicated to giving women a voice. Of course it wasn't allowed in those days, especially because she is a wealthy unmarried noblewoman. Right in the middle of her secret business startup, she meets and falls in love💕 with a Marquess🐺
YES! +Phoebe will not let men rule her life or society anymore! She starts a newspaper for women, about women, by women! +Fake courting! Kind of. Jeffrey genuinely wants to court Phoebe, but she's trying to make sure that he doesn't destroy her newspaper. +Adorable dog!
NO! -Tell him the truth! But he can't handle the truth! -Ambrose. He's useless and annoying and his drama didn't even come to anything.
Amusing, well-written storyline which kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Jeffrey and Phoebe meet under the most inauspicious circumstances. Their views of English Society are as different as night and day, so why would Jeffrey keep thinking about Phoebe? The journey to happiness for this wonderful couple is fraught with frustration, misunderstanding and passion. How these two learn to compromise, makes for a wonderful story. Ms St Clair has a done it again. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Lord Jeffrey is the head of a rather rambunctious household, filled with five younger siblings, his mother, and a large overly friendly canine. Back when he was eighteen his father’s passing left him responsible all of them and he’s done a bang up job, even if he’s a bit stuffy and straight laced himself. Lady Phoebe’s parents died a few years ago, leaving her an heiress who lives with a colorful elderly aunt who allows her much more freedom than most young women of her day. She’s not much interested in the events and mores of the ton and has distinct ideas on how things ‘should be’ rather than they how they are in reality. She and her three best friends are ahead of their time. These two polar opposites meet at a ball, have an unexpectedly striking encounter, and thus their relationship and heated attraction begins. But, Phoebe has a secret. If she shares the secret not only could she become a pariah of society but she could lose this man she is coming to adore. Should she be honest with him? A terrific story that I read from start to finish and couldn’t put down. It’s a delight with a group of colorful characters, witty banter, and decidedly heated romance. I certainly hope that Phoebe’s three best friends have adventures of their own, because I will definitely be looking for them.
I found this a really good book. Phoebe is an amazing character. She is not a conventional society lady. She has a close knit friendship with 3 other ladies who come together regularly to bemoan the unfairness of London society for ladies whom have little rights once they decide to marry. She advocates for change in the press by starting Woman's Weekly for all ladies to read an alternative viewpoint than every other published paper available. Her hero is the Marquess of Berkley who overhears one such conversation and attempts to dissuade her from her beliefs. Once they come together often and get to know one another they find they have chemistry and similar views. One person who stands in the way of their happiness is Ambrose the Marquess's brother who tries to reveal that Phoebe is the publisher of the paper. A great read Ellie, I can't wait to read the other stories in this series.
Ms. St. Clair brings the characters in “Lady of Mystery” to life through captivating descriptions of Phoebe with her dark tresses and green eyes and Jeffrey with his brooding brown eyes and errant blond curls.
What a different kind of story ! I loved it, we have Phoebe an independent some what well off lady. She was raised to speak her peace, and grew up reading all the newspapers at the time. Very unusual as a lot of women never learn to read. While reading them she is furious that all of them are for men only. She decides its unfair and is determined to right this wrong. With funds left her by her parents she starts "The Women's Weekly", a paper run by woman for woman. Phoebe has three ladies that are like sister to her. Julia, Sarah and Elizabeth who try to keep her out of trouble. After having a confrontation with a gentleman who over heard her talking to her friends she is very upset. Jeffrey Worthington, The Marquess of Berkley is everything all ladies of the ton are looking for. He is very handsome, wealthy and will needs to marry to carry on the family line. He is the top pick of the mothers of the ton. Not someone who would evern look at someone like her. Now they seem to run into each other a lot. He is very stuffy, opinionated and arrogant ! So why does he make her so feel so funny. After he finds a copy of "The Women's Weekly' on his own table being read by his sisters ( four of them) he is furious. He is tasked by other gentleman of the ton to find who is behind the paper and put a stop to it. Phoebe hears about the plan and decides the best way to know what he is up to is pretend to like him and keep him close. Oh, my neither expect what the other is up to. With help or interference from all his sister, his mother and the cutest dog, Maxwell thing get out of hand fast. Keeping secrets could either bring them closer or ruin everything when they come to light. With all that is going on between them, there is another who is bent on evil unknown to them. What a great story, can't put it down. Secrets, mystery, Intrigue and lots of kisses and love. This has some steamy scenes for those who want to know. I received and ARC from the author and wish to thank her. This is my honest opinion and my freely giving it.

ONE EXCITING EXPERIENCE!!! OMG! Oh, man. This is one exciting storyline, I was captivated from start to finish. Totally blew me away at the first paragraph, heck maybe even the first sentence. It has all the excitement you'd expect from Ellie with all the suspense and drama. It was smooth flowing with plenty of twists, turns and surprises to keep your attention. I was so immersed I couldn't put it down. Not for a second. The scenes and characters were so detailed and the description related perfectly. They were so realistic I was biting my nails and tightenin my tummy when it got really serious. It played out so well it was like a flower opening up welcoming the sun. I know I probably say every time that this is the best book ever, but I'm going to say it again. Ellie continues to leave me in awe. She has such a gift with bringing her stories to life. My family constantly grows. Well, you know? The characters. They are so deeply and affectionately described that they feel like a part of my family. Ellie has done such a phenomenal job bringing this read to life and into mine. Fantastic job Ellie, thanks for sharing this little gem with us.
Lady Phoebe Winters reads periodicals and newspapers with growing upset at the way society treat woman like they have brain to take care of themselves. Phoebe is a activist before her time, she knew the views of society and men were wrong and wanted to change their views of woman and how the view is skewed by a man’s point of view. Jeffrey Worthington, the Marquess of Berkley overhears a conversation by a few woman at a society ball one night and decides to walk in and set Lady Phoebe straight about a few thing in the world. These two are like fire and water, the sparks fly right from the start, but as they come together often in society they realize their extremely attracted to each and perhaps they might have similar views. Only one thing stands in their way and that she’s the one who began the small publication, written by women, for women. This is an engaging story of society rules, the men and woman who make their own rules and two people trying to figure out what’s right and wrong for them and their families. This my honest opinions after I voluntarily read a copy of this book that was provided to me with no requirements for a review.
This was previously published in 2019 - same title different cover.
I've read these out of order and wasn't lost. I dislike when secrets are kept, it is a real turn off for me. That being said, I must admit, I understood why she kept the secret and did the things she did. She wasn't in love yet and wanted to keep ahead of the H and his investigation.
Their romance does build slowly and was fraught with many ups and downs so not a smooth road to HEA. The H's family added humor to the story as did the dog - made me laugh many times.
I enjoyed the honest banter between the H/h and how they each (him mostly), started to see the views from the other side. Of course, his one sister and mom did help on this score.
There is passionate lovemaking, outside and within marriage, heat level maybe 3-3.5 out of 5.
I do enjoy this author's writing style and encourage you to seek out her novels. We have no cheating, no cliffhanger, romance, some spice and an epilogue about 1 month in the future that was sweet.
I can't improve on the blurb, just recommending this story. (ljb)
So I have read all my regular authors new releases and looking for more to read until the next group of new releases come out which is still a few days away. There are a few authors I read that I call my “go to” authors. Ellie St. Clair is one of those authors. Nothing against not calling her one of my “regular authors” because I really enjoy her books and always get a good read. I just picked her up later than some of my “regular” authors.
But I like to know I have some good authors to fall back on and also I can read a whole series back to back and not have to wait in between each new release within the series. I read one of her books in 2017 and then two in 2018 but didn't really pick up again until May, 2022. This is the 1st book in a series I have not read, although it came out in 2019. This is now my 22nd book by her.
I loved this book. I loved Phoebe and Jeffrey. I loved their characters, I loved their personalities, I loved their family. I really enjoyed their interactions and just them as a couple overall. Just a great read. Can't wait until Book 2.
There seemed to be a lot wrong with this book. When Jeffery took Phoebe for a walk, they took Nancy, her maid. Coming back, Nancy was not in the carriage, and she was not there, so Phoebe and Jeffery could have another sexual interlude. There was another error in the book that a dedicated editor should have caught; it was early in the book, but I've forgotten it now.
The problem I had with the book was that Jeffery and Phoebe had a heated discussion, she slapped him, and then they immediately kissed. This was generally a story of two unlikeable characters (in the opening chapters) who had sexual encounters, with a little story to separate the love scenes. After a while, the characters defrosted a bit and were more relatable. However, Phoebe's ardent sexual behavior was out of character for the time. I was never convinced that they loved each other. They seemed more in lust with each other. I am not really interested in finding any future stories by this author.
Unconventional Ladies – Total of 4 ** 1. Lady of Mystery (2019)
"Women have no ideas, except personal ones" Lady Phoebe Winters recited from an article in the paper. As the article continued it talked about ladies deficiencies that they depended upon men's qualities! So the story starts and Phoebe decides there needs to be a paper written by a woman from the standpoint of women's issues, so she does just that!! Of course that does not go over too well with the gentlemen that the Woman's Weekly is giving the women ideas! They set Jeffrey, the Marquess of Berkley on the trail to find out who the publisher is of the paper and put a stop to it. What is ironic is he and Phoebe have met and he is really intrigued by her and his feelings for her grow as time goes by. But what will happen when he finds out it is she who is writing the articles and what will he do? A really fun read that will keep you turning the pages and only looking for more in this series as the story ends. Well done and I definitely recommend!!
Lady Phoebe Winters is quite the unconventional lady. She is part of London Society, but believes that women need more in life than being servants to their husbands and Social norms. Women have ideas and views that should be voiced, their opinions on what they believe, known. However, the men rule Society and a certain Jeffrey Worthington is fast becoming someone of interest to her. Phoebe finds that it is hard to start a Women’s Weekly paper, with her friends and discover at the same time, that she is interested in more than Jeffrey’s causal friendship. Ellie St. Clair has given us a plot with wonderful characters, and a joyful dog named Maxwell. There is much to be learned about how to make romance work and still provide a newspaper in a man driven London where women are to be quiet and not heard. I enjoy reading this book very much.
Phoebe Winters and Jeffrey Worthington couldn’t be farther apart in their opinions about the rolls of women. Phoebe was raised different than most women, raised to have an opinion and a different point of view. Jeffrey was raised with the opinions of most men women are born to marry and have babies, it’s the way of the world. When Jeffrey and Phoebe have a conversation that does not go so well. Jeffrey is a little shocked at Phoebes ideals but also intrigued with her at the same time. This was a delightful story to read. I enjoyed the conversations that Phoebe and Jeffrey had. Phoebe is determined to change the point of view about women through her new publication and Jeffrey is determined to find out who is behind this new publication. I enjoyed reading this story and I think you will to.
Can an independent minded lady and a determined Lord find a means to compromise?
Lady Phoebe Winters reads periodicals and newspapers and finds that they do not meet her needs so she decides to set up her own paper which will address a wide range of matters.
The paper proves to be popular among the females of society but not so with the men!
Jeffrey Worthington (Marquess of Berkley) is tasked by fellow members of his club to track down the person responsible and stop the publication.
What then happens is the development of the relationship between Phoebe and Jeffrey. Phoebe is trying initially to discover his intentions regarding the paper whilst all the time the two of them are falling in love.
I enjoyed the development of the relationship between these two and I am looking forward to the rest of the series.
I would like to thank Dragonblade Publishing Inc for a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review. I am a part of the authors review team.
Phoebe longs for more than her lot as a lady of the ton, expected to marry and produce heirs. She starts a newspaper that aims to educate women and challenges the idea of what a women should be. Jeffrey shares opinions with the men surrounding him that the newspaper should be shut down, despite having four sisters of his own. Phoebe devises a plan to keep Jeffrey off her track, but what happens when they start to fall in love?
It took a little while for me to connect to the characters, but I ended up enjoying the story in the end. The idea for the series is intriguing and I can't wait to read the next story.
Lady Phoebe Winters was talking to her three friends about how unfair it was to women that the men in their lives had so much control of their lives and money Jeffrey Worthington, Marquess of Berkley, had listened to what Lady Phoebe was saying . He has four sisters living at home but he did not agree with what she was saying. Phoebe knew that his ideas were the same as most men. She decides to use some of her money to start a weekly Women’s paper which upset the men but enjoyed by the women, especially Jeffrey’s sisters. Jeffrey was asked to find the owner of the paper and stop the publication. Different events started happening and his priority changed. I would recommend this book to readers to see what happens. HAPPY READING!!
Lady Phoebe Winters is an independent wealthy young woman. She has never been one of the most popular amongst the "ton" because of her outspoken ways. Now she has found a way to share her ideals with a wider audience of women. Jeffrey Worthington , the Marquess of Berkley is responsible for his mother and four younger sisters, so when he overheard such outrageous ideas he has to let his feelings be known. Our poor hero soon learns that men are not as much in control as they would like to believe. A lovely light-hearted read that covers what was in those days a very serious subject. Lots of giggles with our wonderful characters. I'm looking forward to reading much more from this series.
This is a story of Phoebe and Jeffrey and their love story. They have different ideas and opinions on things, but it does not stop them falling in love and accepting each other for the person they are. I have to confess I always get a little crush on the heroes in Ellie St. Clairs’s books, and Jeffrey is no exception. How could I not get a crush on Jeffery - the way he loves all the people in his life. Ellie St. Clair is such an excellent writer, you will like all the secondary characters - Sisters, Friends, Mother, Aunt and even the Dog. I want to know their story. I would recommend this book to everyone who love a love story. I received an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest opinion.
3.5 Stars - For me this is a new author and I really could not get into the story too much because I felt it was a little slow pace for my taste. Also, the plot was not unique. Lady Phoebe was ahead of her time and frustrated with the way women we're supposed to behave in the eyes of others. She creates her own publication that starts to ruffle too many feathers.
The hero is tasked with putting a stop to what's going on and while doing so he starts to realize that he owes her his respect along with some of her ideas and thoughts. A romance starts to blossom and they see things through two obstacles. This would be a good read for some to sit down during a beach read or vacation.
The story centers around Lady Phoebe and her desire to publish a paper that is written by women for women and Jeffrey, the Marquess of Berkley, who is determined to find out who the publisher is. They meet and after a short time he finds that he is intrigued by Phoebe and those feelings continue to grow as time passes. There is a lot that happens in the story including a brother who wants to embarrass Jeffrey, finding a new location for the paper and finally the wedding. The story is well written, entertaining and a good read. I would highly recommend this book.
An independent, strong opinionated woman in a society that expects women only to be seen and not heard, what could go wrong? Well everything, especially when she meets her match in the form of a handsome gentleman that believes in society’s rules! A lovely book to read. The build-up of romance between Lady Phoebe and Lord Berkely is superb. I could practically feel the tension, the passion and the butting of heads as both believe they are correct. I received this book as an advanced reader. This is my honest review of the book.
