I began this book immediately after finishing "The Duke of Silence." The main character, Ernest plays a fairly large role in this second installment, so reading that book first might be of benefit. I did like the characters of Anthony and Isabel. Due to circumstances beyond her control, Isabel had to walk away from her relationship with Anthony. The consequences of her decision bring both of them ten years of misery. I honestly had tears running down my face as I read this book. Of course, the path to their HEA is loaded with obstacles. Some of the obstacles are the usual ones, other obstacles are unexpected and quite sinister. This book is somewhat low-steam but I think that is reasonable considering the circumstances of the characters. When things finally do get steamy, it is done tastefully, giving the characters the consideration that they deserve after waiting for so many years to be together. I received a free ARC from the author and this is my honest review.
Loved the story about a couple who were in love as teenagers but before her coming out her father marries off to an old Duke. When he dies after ten years of a cruel abusive marriage she can't grieve for her husband as everyone expects. After four months she goes to London and her sister keeps trying to get her out and about. Sh meets her one love from her youth. He's become a rake of the first order and he hates her. After her sister warning her to stay away from him she tries to make friends. With a lot of problems with her family and knowing that she caused more problems when she married she doesn't want to be alone again. There are surprises and who as caused them will surprise you. I really liked all the dynamics between all involved.
Isabella is a widow but her husband had been cruel and then she met a old friend Anthony and they realized they love each other but someone is trying to keep them apart The characters are strong and forgiving The extended epilogue has a happy ending I enjoyed reading
Isabel had a very sad marriage, one that her husband totally controlled. She loved Anthony 10 years prior, but had to give it up. Now her husband is dead. She is free. She wants time to discover herself. Anthony is all she can think about. Thing take so many turns until life is what it should have been, ten years prior.
This was an entertaining read. Anthony and Isobel had been infatuated with each other as teenagers. Her father arranged a marriage for her with an older man who mistreated her. 10 years later she is a widow and runs into Anthony again. Finding their way back to each other was heartwarming. There is also an interesting twist in the story. I would recommend reading this book.
Loved it! Second chance romance with a little twist near the end. I loved the fact that they never gave up on each other when times got tough and Anthony was willing to change his ways.
Isabel and Anthony were childhood best friends. They expected to marry, but her father betrothed her to a Duke whom she dutifully married. The man abused her mentally and, on occasion, physically. He died in an accident ten miserable years later. This story takes place when she is still wearing mourning although she did not mourn the way she’d been treated. Anthony reacted to her marriage by becoming a rake and behaving badly at all times. When he and Isabel accidentally met again, he realized his feelings for her had never changed. The plot is complex and will engage anyone who enjoys the genre. Thanks to the author and publisher for an e-galley for an honest review.
