Claire, exiled Queen of Dohr, returns to the city to face her estranged reptilian alien husband, Eliam, accompanied by the tattooed bounty hunter, R'set'hra. They're racing against her ex-lover Whistler, who is leading an attack on the Capital. Desperate to find a way to stop the full-out war between two of the only aliens she's ever loved, Claire decides to seek out the ancient alien monks in the hope that they'll be able to show her a way out of this conflict.
