Dragon Mistress #3

The Dragon Mistress: Book 3

Rate this book
Our secret is out, and now we’re marked for death.

A lone survivor escaped the mountain battle, carrying news of our dragons’ existence to the court of Prince Oblisii.

Utrea’s dragons were supposed to have been wiped out long ago. Only these five remain—a male and four females. They’re all that’s left to carry on the species, but first we have to keep them alive.

The prince will come soon with his army, and I’m stuck on a mountaintop with my four knights in tarnished armor. Sometimes, I think these men will be the death of me long before the royal soldiers arrive. Other times, I think they may be my only salvation.

Before the five of us can flee Utrea for safer shores, I’ll have to form a soul-bond with the male dragon. Until then, he’s little more than a wild animal, dangerous and unpredictable. And without the male, we’re lost, since the future of dragonkind rests on his shimmering white wings.

Yet the idea of the soul-bond fills me with terror. If I bind myself to him, his death would mean my death, just as my death would mean his. Already, the men I love are binding the female dragons one by one, tying their souls irrevocably together. With the others already bound, everything depends on me.

But danger lurks whether I accept that dragon-bond or not. I was already a wanted woman, after I spurned Prince Oblisii and escaped from his harem of concubines. Not only that, but I also fled straight into the arms of a group led by Oblisii’s disgraced older brother—Rathanii, the man who should have been Utrea’s king.

If Prince Oblisii gets hold of me again, death will be the least of my worries.
And the gods only know what the others might do to try and get me back.

The Dragon Mistress by USA Today bestseller R. A. Steffan is a medium-burn fantasy romance series where the heroine doesn’t have to choose one person at the end. It is part of the Eburosi Chronicles, along with The Horse Mistress and The Lion Mistress. It’s not necessary to have read the Horse Mistress or Lion Mistress arcs before starting the Dragon Mistress books.

A special note for Fantasy readers: herein, you will find explicit love scenes in several interesting and unconventional permutations, including between men. If your gut reaction to that is “Eww” or even “Meh,” you probably won't enjoy this series.

USA Today bestselling author R. A. Steffan lives in New Mexico, where the sunsets paint the mountains purple, and roadrunners roam the desert endlessly in search of their coyote victims. When she’s not busy writing stories about people loving each other in all sorts of different and interesting ways, she can be found taking care of her small menagerie of critters.

A rebel to the core, she is currently sticking it to the man by illegally harvesting graywater from the kitchen and bathroom sinks to water trees outside. This fearless disregard for societal norms extends to her writing, as well. There, you will find polyamory along with straight, gay, bisexual, and non-gender conforming love of all flavors. You will also find families of choice, profound friendships, adventure, danger, and good triumphing over evil.

That, and sex. Lots of sex. Most of which is not the vanilla variety.

I read the first two books in this series last month and this month I decided to return and pick up book 3. The first chapter or so was a bit rough to get back into the world and it starts with a sort of important event, but it just felt a bit off somehow. It lacked the impact and depth I wanted from it for me, but luckily shortly after that the tone changed and I was totally invested again. It's another action packed read and I love reading about these characters and world.

At the end of the last book the characters got attacked and one of the attackers escaped and they are sure she brings the news of dragons still existing back to the prince and king who have a rule to kill all dragons to maintain the peace treaty with the neighboring country. The main characters and her 3 friends are preparing for the worst. But there is one big problem two of them haven't bonded with their dragons yet and they can't leave without the last male dragon in existence. And so starts this book.

This book is a hard one to read at times, the characters go to a lot of hardship in this book. I don't want to go into details and spoilers in my reviews, but this book sure tests the characters. There are some difficult situation they have to go through and by the end of the book it's clear more difficult things are still to come. I was a bit annoyed about something Frella does at the start as it could've been so easily prevented, but it was in character, but I still wish she had acted a bit more careful especially with their current situation. But even with the hard parts, it was a great read. It was interesting to see how the kingdom reacted to knowing the dragons are still alive and how Frella and the rest reacted and dealt with this threat.

In my review of book 2 I mentioned I didn't like the multiple point of views there, but in this book it totally worked and added to the story. The characters are again separated for some time and having those additional point of view really added to the story here. There are some great scenes between the males and I am glad we got those thanks to the multiple point of views. I am glad the multiple point of views worked in this book.

There is some great characters development in this book and some nice progresses of the polyamory relationships as well. I liked how we learn more about the characters as more secrets come to light. We finally get an insight in Rath's past and it was great to finally see him open up a bit. There also is more about Nyx and it's just so sad, but I also like how he's slowly trying to work past it. The romances also grow and develop in this book and I really liked seeing them all grow closer.

While I was not surprised by the twist at the end and in fact predicted that, it does make me very excited for the next and last book. I am curious to see what will happen there and how this series will be resolved.

I also like how we see some familiar characters form the Horse Mistress and Lion Mistress series in this book, which is a fun addition for those who read the series.

To summarize: Another great book in this series. The danger in this book is larger after what happened at the end of the previous book and it was great to see how the story progressed. There are some difficult parts as the characters go through a lot of hardship in this book. But there are also plenty of beautiful and uplifting scenes, I really liked learning more about the characters and seeing the romances develop. I am very excited to see how this series gets wrapped up in the next book.

That cliffhanger..

I have been binge reading this series and this book just about killed me. The writing was so good that I truly felt what the characters were feeling.

Well, this book is certainly a roller coaster ride from start to finish.

The Dragon Mistress series is one part of the Eburosi Chronicles that include The Horse Mistress and the Lion Mistress. The series can be read alone, but there is more depth to the world if you’ve visited it through the other series. This set specifically deals with the adventures of Frella and four very different men as they try to save the world’s last 4 dragons.

In this specific volume, we have the great on page sex that Steffan is known for (hey, if an author is going to be known for something…) and a rip-roaring adventure to get someone out of prison followed by a daring and really dramatic escape. It’s all you’d want in a fantasy adventure, but do go back to Dragon Mistress book 1 or you’ll be completely lost. As a bonus, we do get brief appearances of the main characters from Horse Mistress and Dragon Mistress. It was really nice to see them again at different ages and still as in love as ever.

As an author, Steffan is growing in writing more traditional action scenes (yes, I could add a sex scene joke here, but this is all you get). I was underwhelmed with the end of The Horse Mistress because the action there, which shifted out of necessity to 3rd person, wasn’t as strong as everything she had leading up to it. Now, though, after several series that have involved combat and prison breaks and various other types of physical action, her scenes are great.

Our series narrator is out there doing the usual fine job. The main characters sound different in pitch, tone, accent, and a variety of ways. Druyor gets to act her heart out while some of the characters reveal their damaged backstory. She joked during the recording of the audio that someone snuck onions in her recording booth, and you can tell by how hard she sells some of the emotional scenes. I was definitely moved as a listener.

In conclusion: Another rollicking tale in a world I like to revisit. The conclusion to this one promises to be exciting. If you haven’t tried this yet, treat yourself! You’ll probably be pleasantly surprised.

I burned through all of the books in this series very quickly, then had to wait months for this latest installment. I read it all the evening of the day it was released. It was worth the wait.

Like the previous books, Frella’s story contains nonstop action and adventure. Multiple relationships are in play. And Steffan manages to surprise me at every turn when I think I have an idea of how things are going to go. This was especially true in this story, where the final relationship between Frella and one of her companions did not evolve the way I thought it would, but it was still incredibly satisfying. We also get a reunion with multiple old friends that made me smile.

These elements lighten the darker moments of the book, which might be difficult for some readers. Everything is relevant to the plot and well-written, but Steffan does not shy away from the details.

Heed the warning at the beginning: The story ends in a hell of a cliffhanger. Tragedy strikes the characters, and I’d hold my breath to see how everything is resolved in the final conclusion, but that’s a long wait.

Catch up on this series so you can feel my pain.

Bring Your Tissues, It’s a Rough Ride!

Well, RA Steffan really knows how to put her readers through the mill. This book was a tough one to read. There is a lot of emotional turmoil in this book and I got choked up several times whilst I read it.

This author knows how to build tension extremely well. She cranks it up with a delicate force that is impossible to escape. When reading this book, I couldn’t stop. I’m writing this review at 4.30 am, so let that be a warning to leave plenty of time to finish reading it.

I thought originally that this section of the Eburosi Chronicles was only three books, so I got a bit confused as the end got closer because I couldn’t understand how it would all wrap up neatly in the remaining pages. Then I got to the end and read there was another book. I really need to go and read that now because I HAVE to see what happens to Frella and her guys!

(This review is for the entirety of the Dragon Mistress series, as they are now all available)

I have enjoyed all of the Eburosi Chronicles, but The Dragon Mistress is my favorite arc.

We've met Frella in the previous stories, seen her grow up. In The Dragon Mistress she shows that she has become the sassy adult she showed promise of in her youth. She is off on her own adventure, and, much like her sibling and her guardians, that adventure leads her to several lovers and discovering they all have something supernatural in common. The lovers have to overcome their personal issues to be with Frella, and each other (yes, that's a hint, there's M/M).

As usual R.A. Steffan interweaves this story with a lot of detail that makes for rich world building. I do suggest reading The Horse Mistress and the Lion Mistress first, as those stories will help you understand the world around this story.

Damn it! This book had me clutching my head and heart in disbelief....then whopping in joy. It also had me smiling and laughing at our FMC and her sassy words and tough skills. But damn this is an emotional journey.
Each of our MCs have a story, and they are ones that had me whispering WTAF! But also awwww, as they tackle their past and demons. If they don't think they deserve love at the start, they soon start to believe they do deserve love, everyone does, and love can be simple if you don't fight it...well in this series it can be 😍

The spicy smut is still beautifully done while remaining hot as hell.
The action is still breathtaking
The characters well developed and now under my skin

All I want is a HEA for our MCs now. They bloody deserve it!

The 3rd part of The Dragon Mistress is fast paced and full of action. The story continues with our characters bonding more with each other and with the dragons. We keep learning things from their past that helps us understand them more. But things are starting to get dangerous for all of them after they were discovered at the end of the second book. Hard decisions are made, old friends came to their aid and they are faced with a loss that breaks everyone’s hearts (including ours).
I think the 3rd book is by far my favorite because of all the action, twists, strong emotions, all of our favorite characters and the wonderful cliffhanger.
Can't wait for the next one!!!

I’m so motherfucking pissed with Frella just fucking bond with the dragon you dumb idiot !!!!! For someone so full of fire and intelligence she’s really dumb!!!

Ok this book was good not like the former two but good anyways, the sex is damn great and a specific plot twist had me really, really heartbroken, but I’m still pissed with Frella because come on !!!! She’ll never fucking bond with the white dragon ? WHY THE FUCK THE FOUR BOOKS have her and him in the cover then ? It’s too much to start the last one immediately, but I’m loving the way the guys are getting to know each other and how they’re at least starting to heal

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.

The events in this episode show the difference between two groups, the ones that will risk life and limb to save the endangered species and those that will do as much damage to who ever they can, to gain power.
I am not summarizing the story, as it would detract from the author's enthralling tale.
You need to read for yourself, to fully appreciate this tale.
Beware, there is sadistic violence and death of one of the main characters, in this episode.

I was kept on my tiptoes the entire time. I had sleepless nights wondering about what would happen next. Gwendolyn is such a talented narrator - the emotion she infuses into her words and the way she changes her voice slightly for each character and the accents. She's amazing. And R. A. Steffan - the way her mind works. Her imagination. I would love to meet her. I can't wait to read the fourth book but I'm also sad that after I finish it Frella's story will be over.

I didn’t enjoy this book very much tbh. I think it’s partly due to the first person POV. Also partly to the plot. It bad mostly seemed like things just happen to them, and they don’t have big visions or dreams or a big cause they’re fighting for. But I finished it and I’m still invested in the series somehow. But it doesn’t seem nearly as captivating as the previous two series.

Read it!

Another great installment in the series. I love this world that RA Steffan has created. There is so much tenderness in the relationships created and the suspense of what’s going to happen keeps me on the edge of my seat. Can’t wait to get the next installment.
