The Accursed Vampire #2: The Curse at Witch Camp: A Great Fall and Halloween Read for Kids

Rate this book
In the sequel to middle grade graphic novel The Accursed Vampire, Drago and their vampire buds head to Witch Camp for a summer of spells and magic…but what they find is far more sinister!

It’s summertime and Drago, Eztli, and Quintus are heading to witch camp, where they'll learn spells and magic alongside human kids.

Drago is skeptical about this joint venture with the living, but as long as their vampire pals are with them, how bad could it be?

Pretty bad, actually. Eztli and Quintus end up making friends with the campers while Drago stumbles onto an abandoned mini golf course housing a sinister supernatural entity with intentions of overtaking the camp.

Drago may not like camp, but they can't leave their buds in danger. What will they do?

I wasn’t thrilled with the first volume in this series so I had moderate expectations for this one, and it exceeded them. The first half I would say was average, but the second half had some extremely strong moments, including some that had me laughing and smiling quite a bit.
In conclusion, this was a solid second instalment and I will continue with the series (if more are published) however I would not go out of my way telling people to read them

This sequel was a bunch of middle grade fun!

In this adventure, Eztli, Quintus, and Drago go to witch camp for a summer full of magic and spells. As Eztli and Quin make friends with ease, an insecure Drago finds his own in questionable places. It isn't long before magical mayhem strikes again and the three friends must rush to save the day and their friendship.

This book may not have been as good as the first, but it was still really entertaining and funny.

The novel was a great mix of magic, macabre, and hilarity as our characters explore this new environment. The funny faces characters make still make me laugh in spots, and everything has a really nice light feel to it. The art really reminds me of The Regular Show. It's not the most beautiful, but it's consistent and cute.

Our characters were wonderful like last time, although I'm not sure how much they actually grew throughout this adventure. The story seems more like mass randomness, which is great fun, but I had trouble finding some kind of moral that younger readers might pull from this. Also, I felt the plot was pretty predictable at a certain point.

Still, I think youngsters will find this graphic novel to be a ton of fun and it's super easy to read, so what's not to like? I hope there'll be more books in the future. I'd love to keep reading!

The humor is still charming and matter-of-fact. Your favorite bald-headed vampire returns with typical middle school drama: What do you do when your friends have other friends?

Drago is still adjusting to their life now and the qualms of friendship at a camp. The occult vibes are stronger and darker here to the point where it gets a little scary, but it shouldn't bother any middle-grade kid who has had an appetite for horror movies.

I enjoyed this one more than the first. It had a good plot, and the same themes in the first book but more fleshed out. I love Eztli and her little ponytail 🥺

Super cute still and I love the art. The way spells, magic, and spiritual stuff is depicted is just so fun. And plant magic!

I think this one got a bit more complicated story wise though, and lost some of the charm of the first one. But still good! I hope there are more.

more graphic novels for me! read the first book earlier this summer and I didn't love this one quite as much but it was still very good!
the vampire children make me laugh out loud and i am a 25 year old woman!
anyways that all. just silly fun.
also really love the casual lgbtq rep here - dragoslava is nonbinary/uses they/them pronouns and the vampire kids surrogate parents are a vampire and witch lesbian couple! and it's just chill! no big deal! it's great!

This was a fun and sweet book! I love Dragoslava, 100% would die for him and his cute little smile. I'm proud of him for sticking it out at summer camp! The art style is friendly and the book is filled equally with both funny and emotive frames. Obviously this is geared towards younger readers and for that end it is great. As an adult I enjoy a simple story now and again, too.

An absolute slam dunk of a sequel. I was nervous going in-- wasn't the original book perfect? did we really need a sequel to such a good standalone?-- but despite how well The Accursed Vampire works on its own, or perhaps even because of it, this second entry was just as engaging and fun and delightful to read through. I kept getting peeved, in fact, when people interrupted me...

The plot is very simple: Dragoslava, everybody's favorite nonbinary vampire, is going to witch camp. They're not interested in doing magic, the kids there don't like them, and the timing of everything makes it hard for them to really participate, but their entire family is there, so they have to be, too. I felt so much sympathy for poor Drago as always-- it's such a perfect metaphor for real problems kids face when they wind up someplace and have to make do in an awful environment. Sometimes summer camp sucks.

I also have to shout out another great message in the plot, which joins the growing ranks of kidfic which has a more nuanced response than Beat The Bad Guys Up. There's some real progress made on talking to people and working things out, which, rather than being boring (hello Breaking Dawn) winds up being just as engaging and fun and funny as any other possible solution-- and, obviously, the one that is most realistic, nuanced, and compelling.

AND THE ART! Oh my God the art. McGrane's character design is better than ever, and her sense of panelwork and posing hits its peak with every delightful page. I adored the comedic timing, the way the characters move without moving, the little effects and speech bubbles... in a really good comic, you start marveling at things like speech bubble placement. McGrane just has it down, and more than anything else, I was happy to read this book just to get more of her work. That goes back to what I said at the top-- while this is a great sequel, I honestly was less concerned for once with continuation of plot and additions to story and whatever else and found myself simply enjoying the way you would Calvin & Hobbes; sometimes it's not about arcs or development or whatever and just about something being GOOD and you wanting MORE GOOD THING. I wanted more good thing and I absolutely got it. THANK YOU MS. MCGRANE.

So: If you've read the original, you should read this one; if you haven't read the original, what are you doing? Go read The Accursed Vampire, because it is everything I could ever want from a kids' book. My delightful little cozy comfort read. No wonder I was so harassed to read it; what a perfect little comic.

Cute art and sweet story. I picked this up as I believed it may be of interest to some of my campers. I read it first to make sure it wasn't too mature for them or anything, and I think it'll be great for some of the older campers. It explores some important themes, has good messages on friendship, and is silly constantly.
Unfortunately, I do not have the first book for them, nor have I read it. I got this copy at a steep discount due to it having printer cut errors, and can't fork the money to get book 1 right now. Despite that, I think this book is still very interesting and has lovely art that will capture readers.

I love these feral goblin vampire children so much. Especially drago. The art was soo stunning and just..colorful and weird and magical. Drago is such a sweet little dude I just want to protect them and keep them safe. This made me laugh out loud multiple times which is weirdly rare for me in books. Aaah so creative and adorable and goofy and silly and weird. Loved the first one too, maybe more than this one, but they're both really good. This one did get confusing at times but I thjbk it's just been a while since I read the first book lol

I randomly came across this graphic novel and decided to pick it up as a palate cleanser between my books. This was so creepy and cute! I loved all of the characters especially Dragoslavo. He just wanted to fit in and make friends🥹 He was hilarious and I loved all of the action that went down. I didn’t even read the first one, but I figured out everything as I went along. Vampires, witches, and ghosts were all included in this! The Accursed Vampire is a great middle grade graphic novel to pick up if you want something funny and spooky. I recommend to everyone of all ages😄

Okay so I wasn't initially aware that this was a second book, and I was definitely missing some important context-- however, it was still really fun to read! The characters are all super lovable, and the story was quick and fun. I think my favorite thing was that everyone was so chill about odd or scary things happening, they took everything in stride and jumped head-first into trying to solve the problem. I think that the laidback vibe kept the plot from being stressful, and instead allowed it to just be fun.

Somehow picked this up not realizing its number 2, not 1!
I was still able to follow along. This is MADE for little weirdo gremlin imaginative children in the best possible way. Like the interior logic of the story and characters feels like a child telling you the story, its so good. I wish I had this as a young kid.

I found this installment a little hard to follow at times. I couldn't remember what had happened in the first book, and that mattered. There were lots of bit players who were hard to keep track of. Maybe it's because I loved the first book so much that this one was a plain "it's okay" for me. Would absolutely read the third one.

So glad I was able to get this book! My middle schooler has read it repeatedly and now has a goal to get the first book and anymore this writer publishes. Superb storyline and creative art work for the win!

Drago is the best. A little bald kid vampire who is in that old vampire aesthetic? Hilarious.

Plus, the angry face is great. Whenever a cartoonish character has an angry face for no real reason, I'll laugh.

A heartfelt continuation with themes of getting out of your comfort zone, making new friends, but ultimately staying true to yourself and standing up against mean grown-ups, even if it means defending your own bullies.

There is something about this series that is off for me. The biggest part is we bounce through timelines of the characters and there is no warning this is happening. Clothing helps a little but then I was wondering where am I, what is happening. Perhaps one should read books one and two back-to-back and there were people/things I had forgotten. However, the ending allows for a book three and therefore, a read-again when that happens. How many books are coming and can I get them all at once?

Eztli is my favourite!

The novelty of the first book has largely worn off, and I can't say that the sequel has added much to the canon. The gender alchemy is mostly gone, too. Drago is still "they", but so what? They're really just a kid.

Super fun sequel to the first. I liked that we still got snippets of how Drago met his two vamp friends as well as learning how to make new ones. I really liked seeing how they welcomed him into camp after the whole fiasco. I could easily read another 2 or 3 volumes of this series!

(4.0) The first part half was more intentional in shaping the volume with a stronger story, which was supported by the consistent off kilter humor (often with no punchline) to translate both dark and delicate aspects of palatable distress.

Weirdly enough I was surprised to find this book at a dollar tree. I stumbled upon it and was shocked bc I didn't even know they sold books?! It was cute to say the least! I definitely would have loved this back in middle school. Always a sucker for a little vampire story :) (haha get it "sucker")

Just as charming as the first, though the witch fights were a little confusing. And I’m still not clear what Parch was trying to do. But it was good otherwise!
