A Calder at Heart

Rate this book
In a tale perfect for fans of Yellowstone, the legendary New York Times bestselling author brings America’s frontier to vivid life in a saga of love, hope and endurance in 1919 Montana, as the end of the Great War, the looming start of Prohibition, and reignited rivalries put a small town on the brink of a seismic shift.

Battle-scarred and emotionally ravaged by the loss of his wife and children to Spanish Flu, former US Army Major Logan Hunter heads to Blue Moon to salvage whatever peace he can near the only family he has left. Not only does the Calder clan embrace him, but patriarch Webb Calder helps Logan secure a prime piece of ranching property. Yet settling into his new home is fraught with challenges, especially since Logan’s land borders the rival Dollarhide spread, stoking the battle between the families anew and pitting Logan against an adversary who stirs him like no other . . .

From her first encounter with Logan Hunter, Dr. Kristin Dollarhide feels an instant connection to the sorrow in his beautiful eyes. As a former military MD, Kristin is no stranger to the devastating effects the war has left on hearts and minds—including her own. Despite her instinct to steer clear, Kristin is powerfully drawn to the handsome widower. Until the raging conflict takes a tragic turn, threatening all hope for their future . . .

“Dailey keeps the pace brisk with dangers both natural and man-made, and her battle-scarred protagonists are easy to root for.” –Publishers Weekly

It is 1919 in Blue Moon, Montana. World War One Veteran, Army Major Logan Hunter has returned home to try and pick up what pieces of his life remain. His wife and children have all died of the Spanish Flu.

Logan is related to the Calder Family; and that family still feuds with the Dollarhides.

Logan has purchased a ranch near the Dollarhides Ranch, and about that time Logan meets Doctor Kristin Dollarhide. They eventually find themselves attracted to each other. But that relationship does not meet with either side of their families. Conflicts and violence soon erupt within the community.

Ms. Dailey, although diseased, had managed to write enough of the manuscript for a ghost writer to finish this book; and it is a tribute to the literary career of Janet Dailey.

This book just plain has a bunch of good storylines! There are a lot of different plots going on, but they work so well together without any confusion when switching around.

I felt connected to the characters throughout the book and just ended up liking most of them. The feuding family portion is a classic struggle that is seen in many books, but it was done in a way that you don't really hate a particular side. I think this was because the main characters, Kristin and Logan are more logical and don't really choose sides. The greater good drives them through Kristin being a doctor and Logan following his ranch dream.

So maybe it was just me, but I really liked the bootlegging plot portion with the kiddos. It brought that little bit of suspense since you knew they were going to get caught or something bad was going to happen.

I didn't read the previous books in this series and now want to go back and read them since I loved this one. I definitely thought this book worked well by itself.

Thank you to Kensington and Netgalley for providing me a copy of this ARC for my honest review.

The second one was defiantly my favorite but this one was also so good. I just love the setting and there is something about the characters that just have totally pulled me in. Except Mason, I strongly dislike him

I received this book through the Goodreads giveaway program for my honest review of the novel and I can honestly say I really enjoyed it. I would labels this novel as a historical romance novel, but honestly it had so many great storylines to follow; two feuding families, old west danger, young boys causing trouble, a deep passion, wild dreams, and so much more. I did not expect this book to have as much depth as it did. I thought that Mason Dollarhide really played a great antagonist in multiple storylines. Kristin was an excellent strong lead role that I also enjoyed following. The story gave you a good glimpse into what it might have been like to be the only doctor is a small old west town. It kind of reminded me of Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman 😀.

A book dealing with family and the after affects of war. Some of the characters are likable and some are not so much. The words are written so descriptive like in describing the wind and the dirt blowing. The story has parts that will have you crying and some parts where you will be happy.

Janet Dailey brings us back to the Calder and Dollarhide families and the rivalry that is still brewing between them. We meet former US Marine Major Logan Hunter on his way to Blue Moon to be near the only family he has left after the war and meets Dr. Kristin Dollarhide. Logan is quickly thrust into the rivalry as we learn that his only relation is his cousin Webb Calder. It intensifies when Logan purchases property that can change fortunes. Logan must decide if he will stand by family, or will his attraction to the new doctor get in the way of family loyalty? Will Kristen also be able to withstand the attraction she feels toward Logan while still keeping peace with her family? What happens when the past literally shows up to wreak havoc once again?

Janet Dailey brings us a story of two people who were born into families that ended up being rivals instead of neighbors who help each other. Will these two families ever resolve these issues or will the past keep them from healing? Even though it is part of the Calder series, Ms. Dailey does bring you up to speed on past events so you know what is going on, and you want to see how Logan and Kristin will deal with their feelings and their families. Will they be successful, or will the past be just too much of a burden to carry for them?

I have received and read an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books, Kensington for this privilege.

This is an excellent book, but the title is misleading. There are 4 very strong leading men in this story and only one cares about being a Calder - Webb. Logan is a Calder cousin but it's not his last name and the Calder name means very little to him. He is his own person and not a Calder at heart. The storyline is more focused on the Dollarhides - Mason, Joseph, Blake and Kristin. Joseph was raised as Blake's son but when Mason returns to town, Joseph is enamored with his real father's carefree and reckless lifestyle. Kristin, the town doctor, is the sister of Mason and Blake. Both Webb and Logan are in love with Kristin. Rivalries are everywhere - Logan & Webb: Mason and Blake and poor Kristin is in the thick trying to smooth things over. There is a lot going on in this little town - Range wars, cattle thieving, bootleg liquor and family drama. A very compelling story with suspense that keeps you guessing. So glad I read this one!

Thank you Kensington for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book. I loved this book. Didn’t realize it was part of a series, but it is perfect as a stand alone book, so don’t let that stop you from reading it. You feel like this could be a true story the characters are so real. There are different plots going on with a few of the characters, but they all come together to make a great story. It is a love story that takes place in 1919 during prohibition. The way the kids are brought in to help with this movement was so surprising. It will make you wonder how some people can live with themselves. You will be cheering for the good guys and hoping in the end they win. This is a fast read, because you can’t put it down.

I will definitely be reading the first two books in this series.

Battle scarred from the war and the tragic loss of his wife and children has Logan Hunter heading to Blue Moon to be near the only family he has left. Hoping to start a new life and buy some land for a ranch, the patriarch of the family Webb Calder helps him to purchase a prime property. The land borders the Dollarhide spread and that heats up the feud between the two families. When Logan meets Kristen Dollarhide there is an instant attraction between the two. Despite their instincts to steer clear of each other they are drawn to each other. As conflict between the two families come to a head it threatens any hope of a future for the two of them.

Thank you NetGalley, and Kensington Books for the book A Calder At Heart. This is my personal review.
A Calder at Heart is the third book in the Calder Brand series.
This book puts the Calder and Dollarhides ongoing feud front and center. Logan Hunter, who is a relative of the Calder’s needs family and comes to Blue Moon to find what he needs. Kristen Dollarhide is a doctor who has come to serve the town’s people.
Right from the beginning you can feel the tug that is there pulling the two towards each other. But being on the opposite sides of this ongoing feud is one they may not be able to overcome.
This book had so much depth to it that made it so hard to put down.
I have enjoyed every book in the Calder Series.

The novel opens as the reader meets Logan Hunter a US Marine heading back to his hometown to be near the only remaining family he has when he meets Dr. Kristin Dollarhide. Logan immediately gets thrown into a family rivalry that escalated after he buys a ranch that borders the land of Webb Calder. This novel brings themes of love, loyalty, family struggles and the harsh conditions of living in the West together in a beautiful story. Janet Dailey is truly a talented writer that focuses on getting audiences to connect with the characters. This was an ARC provided by NetGalley and Kensington Books

This is a Historical Romantic Suspense, and this is the third book in The Calder Brand series. I really loved the characters in this book, and I also enjoyed the setting in this book. You can feel the hard times the characters are going through. I also loved the suspense that is throughout this book, and the slow moving romance is a perfect fit for this book. I was kindly provided an e-copy of this book by the publisher (Kensington Publishing Corporation) or author (Janet Dailey) via NetGalley, so I can give an honest review about how I feel about this book. I am adoring this Calder Brand series. The plot of A Calder at Heart follows the developing relationship between Kristin and Logan. The story includes all the good stuff: scandals, secrets, action, adventure, and romance, of course. I really enjoy Dailey's characters and seeing some others from the other books I've read in the series. This is a great book for those who enjoy westerns, historical fictions, and cowboy romances. I am looking forward to reading the next installment in the Calder Brand series.

this series is incorrectly named

This is the first book that had a Calder as the main character. It’s always been the Dollarhides.

It’s just strange that they keep butting heads with the richest people and the rich people get their names on the cover too. I guess that’s how the world works.

I am glad she didn’t kill Chase off and I’m glad that she had Logan save him so he and Webb could make up or at least be cordial again.

I was frustrated with the boys and mad about them getting told on and Cully not telling his friends not to go when he knew his dad snitched and got the money and his dad knew that the boys were going to be there.

Crazy. I am disappointed that Mason didn’t care about Joseph and his friends either. Everything was a game to him.

I am curious about the next book since I assume Joseph will be grown. I would have hoped he would have stayed friends with Chase at least. He was the only one who proved to be a real friend in the end. We will see.

What is your favorite western book or movie? We were on a western kick the past few years as a family and watched a lot of classic westerns. I think my favorite of the mix was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, but there were a lot of great movies.

A Calder at Heart is a historical fiction western set in Montana in 1919. Kristin Dollarhide is a doctor who has returned from WWI to her small town of Blue Moon. She wants to set up a practice and be with her family again. She tries to forget her sweetheart who died tragically. When she meets Logan Hunter, she feels something again. Logan is searching for a new life and to feel something again himself. A Major in WWI, he returned home to Texas to find that the Spanish flu had killed his entire family. He sells what is left and decides to move near his Calder relatives in Montana. He discovers that there is a feud going on between the Dollarhides and the Calders. Is he a Calder at heart that will get caught up in the feud or will he be able to move on?

I loved this book. The setting and characters were fantastic. There were just enough characters and build-up that I felt that I knew them all. The chemistry between Kristin and Logan sizzled off the page. I love reading about this time period and the family drama was riveting. I also enjoy a Romeo and Juliet type story of two feuding families and a couple who finds love. I loved that Kristin was a strong and capable woman and Logan was an honorable man.

There were several subplots in this novel that were also very suspenseful including bootlegging, a young woman in trouble, and water rights. It kept me reading nonstop through the end of the novel.

This is the third novel in a series, but it worked well as a standalone. It made me really want to read the rest of the series. I hadn’t read any Janet Dailey novels in awhile, so I looked her up. Janet Dailey passed away ten years ago, but there is now a ghostwriter writing her novels. I just wish they had written in the book who the ghostwriter is for A Calder at Heart as I would definitely read more of their works. There is a nice set of book club discussion questions at the end of this novel.

I keep seeing comparisons of this novel to the series Yellowstone. I have wanted to watch this series, are you a fan?

3.8⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Genre: Historical Romance

*Not too Spicy

Loved Less:
*First half of book was a little slow for me
*Stunted Romantic Relationship Development

Description:
1919, Blue Moon, Montana. With the Great War over and the country on the brink of Prohibition, the small town is about to undergo another seismic shift. But as with any big change, there's bound to be blood. This time, the fate of Blue Moon's most powerful families hangs in the balance . . .

Yet settling into his new home is fraught with challenges, especially since Logan's land borders the rival Dollarhide spread, stoking the battle between the families anew and pitting Logan against an adversary who stirs him like no other . . .

From her first encounter with Logan Hunter, Dr. Kristin Dollarhide feels an instant connection to the sorrow in his beautiful eyes. As a former military MD, Kristin is no stranger to the devastating effects the war has left on hearts and minds--including her own. Despite her instinct to steer clear, Kristin is powerfully drawn to the handsome widower. Until the raging conflict takes a tragic turn, threatening all hope for their future . . .

My opinion:
Gave me a mellowed Yellowstone and/or Hatfield & McCoys vibe! The first half of the book was a little slow for me; however, the second half took off galloping! There were a few aha moments that surprised me, but the majority of the story was predictable (although in a good way). The protagonists' romance seemed very abrupt, and I felt it needed more detail and building. It is an easy, enjoyable read.

Former US army Major Logan Hunter heads to Blue Moon to salvage whatever peace he can near the only family he has left.

He’s also in Blue Moon to deliver a letter to the family of Corporal Axel Anderson, who died during the Great war. Logan was Corporal Anderson’s commanding officer.

At the graveyard, he encounters a woman named Dr. Kristin Dollarhide who incidentally has come to pay her respects to Axal Anderson, who was the love of her life and was shot in a senseless fight between ranchers and immigrant farmers two days before Kristin had been due to leave Blue Moon for travel.

Logan is staying in Calder with Webb Calder the only blood relative he has left. Logan wrote him, and invited him to come to Blue Moon and settle.

Web’s been buying land and owning rights. He’s interested in a land owned by Lars Anderson, Kristin’s father-in-law. Lars, however, has refused to sell. Kristin’s brother, Blake Dollarhide who’s married to Lars’s daughter, owns a lumber mill on his ranch.

Blake is also interested in the same land. The wagon road from the lumber camps to his mill runs straight across it. And the creek that flows along the boundary of that ranch is the one that waters his property.

Webb is trying to get Logan to sweet talk Lars into selling his property seeing as Logan was his late son’s commanding officer.

An interesting western romance novel. Beautiful characters and evocative descriptions of Montana.

Thank you to Janet Dailey, NetGalley, and Kensington Books for the arc of this book.

A Calder at Heart by Janet Dailey is a cowboy romance, but quite a bit more. It takes place in Montana in 1919, so hardly current, but people did fall in love back then. Kristin had left home after her “friend,” Alvar Anderson had been shot in yet another senseless range war. She had studied medicine and gone on to treat people in the war. While visiting his grave, out on the prairie where his parents’ homestead had been, Kristin met Major Logan Hunter who was looking for the Andersons. He had been Alvar’s brother’s commanding officer and had a letter for them which he wanted to deliver in person. From there, Kristin when into town to try to find a place to live that had space for her office and Major Hunter went to visit relatives. Logan was a Calder and Kristin was a Dollarhide, putting them on opposite sides, if either of them decided to take sides.

This was a different time, civilized but still looking back, hence the range wars. Neither of them wanted anything to do with that, but what one wants aren’t always taken into consideration. It was a good story, full of human angst, and family loyalties. People had to adjust to a woman doctor, it was not yet the norm, and Webb Calder and Blake Dollarhide still thought violence was the way to solve problems. It was an interesting look into a different time, and yet one we are so familiar with. It was well done, Dailey. Thank you!

Another well written story of the saga of the Calder’s and Dollarhide’s feud. This is the third in the series and really one should read the previous books to understand the animosity between the families. The range war has calm down, but Webb Calder still has plans for more control by using his newly arrived cousin Logan. Logan is a returning Major from the Great War only to find his whole family has died from the Spanish flu. He leaves Texas behind to start anew with the only family he has left in Montana. Shown a perfect piece of land for his dream of raising horses has only one drawback, it borders the Dollarhide’s ranch. Determine to remain neutral between the two families isn’t easy and then to fall in love with the sister of Blake Dollarhide adds some more fuel to the fire.
Dr. Kristen Dollarhide has returned home from the front of the Great War. Her dreams of opening up her own practice in Blue Moon is slowly becoming a reality. When Webb Caulder shows an interest in her she isn’t sure if it is real or a plot against the Dollarhide’s. And then she meets Logan, saving his life from a bullet wound. The pull to him only adds confusion.
There is a slow building romance, a good glimpse of the hard life of a rancher. What a page turner, I couldn’t put it down! Can’t wait to read it next book. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I needed a shorter read, and this one was calling to me! I am glad I picked it up because it kept me enthralled through the entire story.

🤠 There is ALWAYS drama going on in this book. There are several different conflicts simultaneously occurring constantly throughout the book. When one is somewhat resolved, more pop up. It makes the book flow nicely and without any drag.

👢 I love the main female character, Dr. Kristin Dollarhide! She is smart, sassy, determined, and capable. She also has a good heart.

🤠 Logan Hunter is a great character, too. He has a lot of life experience and all the wisdom that comes with it. Plus, he sounds like a hot book boyfriend 😍

👢 This one really does have Yellowstone 1923 vibes- and I LOVE that show! I am a huge fan of historical fiction anyway, but the author includes little tidbits that make the history come to life. For example, Kristin is a frontier doctor and faces many challenges based on the state of science in the era. Dailey includes several instances where these limitations challenge Kristin and describes how she overcomes them.

🤠 The story itself is 250 pages and just flies by once you get started. There is minimal spice, but there are a lot of situations about personal relationships between all kinds of people- romantic, familial, and friendly. It felt a tad Hallmark-y in that sense.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley and I am voluntarily reviewing it.

While this is a part of a series, you don't have to read the prior ones to fully understand and connect with these characters.

This book has SO MUCH going on. It truly was a magical get-away for me. Going back it Montana just after World War 1 to a time of hardship, struggle and despair.

I loved having a strong female lead. Kristin Dollarhide served as a doctor during the war. She comes back home to serve as the town's doctor as the prior one was killed in a road accident. She struggles with PTSD. Major Logan Hunter comes to Montana after serving letters to family of his dead soldiers. He has one last letter to deliver. He does have a distant relative in the area. Webb Calder invites Logan to Montana to live after Logan discovers his parents along with his wife and children died of the Spanish Flu while he was off fighting in the war.

This book is written in a multiple POV format. Not only do we get the two main love interest but that of family members and various other people. There was a minor love scene with barely any details (if that bothers you it was really only a sentence or two that you could skip over.)

I would definitely recommend this story to anyone. It was one that you could get lost in.

Janet Dailey is an author you won’t regret picking up. Here she writes about another part of the Calder family. This story focuses on Logan Hunter, a distant relative of the Calder’s, and Kristin Dollarhide. The story pulls you in right from the start and keeps you turning the pages until the end. Logan and Kristen’s HEA is a difficult road, with many obstacles in their way, especially the feud between their families. Join them as they navigate everything to get there. Even though this book is part of a series, you do not need to read the others before reading this one.

Ms. Dailey’s gifted writing gives the reader characters that are believable and brough to life the realities of living in mid-West in the early 1900s.

I highly recommend you pick up this book. You will not be disappointed.

Kristian Dollarhide comes home from the army and becomes the town Doctor. Logan is new to Blue Moon, he is a a cousin to Webb Calder. He is fresh out of the military also. Kristin is taking the back road and her horse bucks her and she ends up going to Logan’s place he was injured got shot in the shoulder. She helps Logan then they take him to the Calder house Kristin stays with Logan. She goes to the kitchen to get some soup and Webb is there making nice to her. Webb makes a play for Kristin, even though she likes Logan.
The kids are out for summer, they start snicking out for adventures. They got tied up with Mason (Joseph real father) he was running booze the kids were meeting them and showing the truck the way.r
They had a shoot out and Chase, Webbs son got grazed in the head it all came out Mason got sent to prison. They kids fell apart.
Kristin and Logan get married. They get there horse to raise. She works in town then comes out to the ranch because they have phones now so they can be reached. Logan fixed the roads she she had a good ride.

This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.

I have enjoyed this series with the Calders and the Dollarhides and all the drama that goes along with these families!

This time, Kristin has returned from the battlefield as a doctor and meets Logan (a Calder relative) and knows that she needs to keep her distance as the two families are worse than the Hatfields and the McCoys! But that is hard when sparks keep flying between them, then add in Webb Calder courting Kristin and you have a very volatile situation.

Another side story is that Mason Dollarhide has returned and Joseph knows that Blake is not his biological father and wants to meet Mason. There is also another Anderson girl that Mason seems attracted to and this causes much aggravation in the Anderson family.

There is plenty of drama, intrigue, and romance throughout the book along with some sad events, but there is a great HEA!

Blue Moon, Montana, Spring 1919

Dr. Kristin Dollarhide went away to medical school ten years ago. She’s just returned home after becoming a doctor and then going to war to treat the wounded. Kristin had always wanted to come home to practice medicine. Logan Hunter went away to war, only to come home to find his entire family dead of the Spanish flu. He decided to go live near the only family he had left in Montana. Logan is only looking for peace. A drought, a impending range war and two families who hate each may just lead to A Calder at Heart being the answer to some type of peace.

Janet Dailey’s next book in the Calder Brand series, A Calder at Heart continues the stories of the Calder and Dollarhide families as the build their empires. Two people who are dealing with grief and the aftereffects of the Great War (WWi) are looking to begin a new life as they adjust. Find that their problems are may just take a back seat to life in the Montana territory. A Calder at Heart takes place just after the end of World War I in the wilderness of Montana. Two warring families fight for dominance in the wilds of the the west. Kristin Dollarhide is a doctor who wants to help the people in her hometown. Logan Hunter is a former war officer looking for peace. An impending range war, a drought, and a love triangle figure into the drama of A Calder at Heart. Janet Dailey’s Calder Brand series next book. A Calder at Heart has drama, suspense, rival families, a criminal element that keeps the reader entertained. A historical that takes place just before statehood for Montana. Janet Dailey takes the reader on a trip through the lives of rival families who are the second generation of settlers in the wild west and a family that are a favorite to write about. Fans and readers get a look into the start of the Calder dynasty and maybe some peace to two competing family by bring a complication.

Thank you to Kensington Books for the giveaway!

So I won the third book in this series and I love a good excuse to dive into something new so I read the two books before this one as well. Boy was I disappointed. First off, it's the Calder series but other than this book it's usually the Dollarhide family that is the focus. The Calder's are supporting characters at best and background Characters in the first two books. These are romance novels at the heart and while there's an okay plot outside the romance it's really hard to get past the rape and sexual assault in EVERY book in this series. I see in the description that the author died in 2013 so I don't know who is writing these if it's a man or what but I don't know how anyone can get into the romance fantasy frame of mind. I'm not knows to be a huge lover of romance books and haven't read a lot of them but to me that just seems like a slap in the face to the what I assume is a largely female audience. I'm sure these things happened during these times, I'm not saying it's historically inaccurate I guess I'm just not into non con/rape tropes in fictional romance novels. Sorry not sorry.

That aside I probably would've finished this in an evening but was having a drink while I read and the Webb Calder romance plot snuck up on me so fast I legit thought I was drunk and missed it. I put the book down and took it back up after the weekend going all the way back to where Webb and Kristin first met after Logan was shot and sure enough the book just sneaks in not too long later about flowers being sent to Kristin. It seemed really like half assed, forced, and rushed love triangle that I don't think was necessary. Needless to say I won't be continuing this series.

Happy reading!

Let me start by saying I am super picky about Western romance novels so take everything I say with that in mind. My over all impression of this book was just lack luster. It felt like nothing really developed enough. Maybe because I haven't read the other books in the series but as a stand alone this just didn't hold up for me. I felt like the story of Logan losing his family to the Spanish Flu could have been more prominent, he could have shared that with Kristen. Kristen's relationship with Mason her half brother was confusing to me and not well explained. The worst for me was the love triangle between Kristen, Webb and Logan. All three were basically strangers. For Kristen and Webb it went from mortal enemies to insta love without having any type of getting to know you. Then Kristen and Logan barely spoke to one another and then all of a sudden she declares him her friend, sleeps with him and is magically in love. So many opportunities to show their relationship evolve and the author took none of them. I can't get passed the insta love in this book. Where is the romance when the two main characters share hardly any banter or information about themselves with each other. Sorry I can't buy in. Regretfully I give this 2.5 stars. I will round up to three because I love historical romance set in the West.

Thank you so much to NetGalley and the Publishing House for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel by Janet Dailey in exchange for my honest opinion.
