Nadia Green is a missing persons detective on Petrox Station. When a file concerning the Persika incident ends up on her desk, Nadia is reluctant to take the case—dozens of reports from different investigators all led nowhere and it seems like a dead end. But when she learns that the pilot mysteriously disappeared from the ship after sending out a mayday call, Nadia agrees to tackle the case.
As Nadia begins her search for the missing pilot, her investigation uncovers distressing details about the hidden inner workings of District Five and what truly happened to the Persika.
District Five is the sequel to After Io and the second book in the Far Light Series by Elliott Wink.
I'm a science fiction and fantasy writer with a day job. I've been teaching English for nearly a decade, so I spend my days analyzing writing with my students and my nights putting my own pen to paper.
I have a masters in psychology and I find people fascinating, so I usually spend a lot of time in my characters' heads. Whether that character is drifting through outer space, navigating through a dystopian future, or in another universe entirely, they are unlikely to escape the nature of the human condition when it comes to my stories. We are human, even when we are forging through the unknown.
I live with my very supportive husband and tri-color collie-pit mix in Northern California. When I'm not writing or watching movies, you might find me on the golf course or cooking elaborate, celiac-friendly meals.
No idea why my origin review refuses to post. Well, no matter, I will happily gush about this book again!
This book does everything I want a sequel to do: build. It builds the world, it builds character, it builds tension. It builds a plot that uses the previous book as a stepping stone and the reader relished in watching everything expand.
The characters are wonderful, being very human and yet also engaging. You see their flaws and faults but want them to succeed anyway. Seeing their struggle is a journey.
The setting…love how the world is set up. It’s both intimate and yet you get the feeling of an ever expanding understanding that our characters are very small amid an expanding world.
Elliott Wink is back with the second book in the Far Light Series, the sequel to “After Io” called “District Five”! This new chapter take us from the relatively contained sci-fi thriller story on the Persika in the first book, to the vast future universe that Wink has so deftly created in the second book. I think this expansion demonstrates how Wink is growing as an author. On this journey we meet Nadia Green, a detective on Petrox Station, as she investigates a missing person related to the Persika incident. As she pulls at threads, jumping literally through space from station to station, things start to unravel and we begin to see just how large of an impact the events of the first story have had on this future world.
If you liked "After Io" I think you will love "District Five"! It has all of the great concepts of the first story (wonderful world building, captivating characters, a thought-provoking plot...) and has increased the scale and consequences by 1,000! The non-linear timeline makes it feel like you are fitting puzzle pieces together to finally see the big picture. You will never want to put this book down as you are always longing to find out where the next piece will fit! As with the first book, there is absolutely no filler text in this story. Once you start, you will not want to stop reading until the end. And then, at the end you will just want to read more... I can tell from the exciting conclusion of this book that there is much more to look forward to in this not-so-distant future world! I can't wait until the next chapter in the Far Light Series comes out! I 100% recommend that you read this series! If you are into gritty sci-fi, mystery, thrillers, you won't be disappointed!
I received an advanced copy of this book for free, and I am leaving this honest review voluntarily.
The second installation of the Far Light Series did not disappoint. As a reader, I was intrigued after page 1 and spellbound by page 20. As a diehard fan, I was thrilled to continue to learn more about the futuristic world of Bryn Michaels and the Persika crew.
Like book one, this was a page turner that kept its readers engaged until the end. Wink introduces us to new characters that quickly become favorites as they try to unravel the web outlined in After Io.
Book three can’t come quick enough. I hope Wink realizes the impact she is making. Her writing stye is concise and intentional and the psychological lens that we have into the psyche of her characters is addictive.
Without giving any spoilers I can only say that the plot of District Five is brilliant and such a fun ride.
Highly readable with outstanding characters (this is true for both books!). I'll definitely be reading more Elliott Wink.
District Five is such a smart sequel, and so satisfying if you can read it as soon as you finish After Io. This is good sci-fi that doesn't get bogged down in the usual sci-fi bullshit.
