The discovery of a severed, tattooed arm sets in motion this intricately plotted police procedural. Heading up the investigation are Houston detectives Eli Ridge and Thaddeus Preck, a well-balanced team. Preck is a veteran of the department, a former running back for LSU, who gives orders with a Cajun accent and has no tolerance for backtalk. Ridge, the main character, served as a combat medic in the Iraq war, and after six years with the force, has recently made detective. If Preck is a fireplug, both physically and psychologically, Ridge carries the weight of a tragic childhood, a draining battle with a Houston billionaire to keep Ridge from joining the force and—most damaging—the horrors of war: “Or maybe it was that he’d felt enough lifeless arms of men in the past. . . He couldn’t help but think about the brothers he’d lost in Iraq.“ In a case where the puzzle pieces are body parts, Ridge’s vulnerabilities are constantly tested. Like the best of mysteries, the detectives thread their way through the powerful and the powerless: televangelists and surgeons, prostitutes and junkies. False trails and dead-ends abound as they track the killer from Texas to Louisiana. Fast-paced, atmospheric, and with twists multiplying almost exponentially, Whitewashed Tomb is great crime fiction.
