"You are in my soul" she whispers
"Tell me that again" I say to her "Tell me that again. Make me believe it."

I really loved Hanna´s and Tuoni´s chemistry in the first book and I loved in this as well. Where we had gone from enemies to lovers in the first book, this one somehow manages to get back to kind of enemies. The tension was there and I loved their constant bickering. Tuoni is the same dirty-talker he was in the first book and there are definitely some steamy scenes in this. Although I will deduct a bit for that really weird threesome scene that kind of threw me off.

The side characters were as good as in the first one; although some felt like they were forgotten. Especially after we got some new information on some of the side characters in this one I would´ve loved to see more of them! Nevertheless I liked the introductions of the rest of the gods, althought their characters haven´t gone that much into depth yet.
I just love Sarvi and Raila. Raila did not feel like just a maid but also like a friend to Hanna. I also loved that Bell made an appearance as well.

I really liked the plot, the book was fast paced and really fun to read. I loved the world building and how it got more into detail and we got to see even more new places then in the first one. Again I love that this is a finnish mythology retelling, the concept of the book feels so refreshing in comparison to all the greek mythology retellings we already have.
I have to deduct a bit again for the pop culture references, I don´t know how I feel about them in a fantasy book.... Also the family relations got quite a bit confusing at one point.

Overall it was a fast-paced and exciting read and I am curious to see where Hanna´s journey will lead her in the future.

Pre-read (5/26/2022): I've decided against my TBR & to do lists wishes that I am going to binge read this book and the first book this weekend. How do they always get longer than they start each day?! I can't just let all the fabulous reviews of the series, pass my mind by and not try to pick this up!

Pre-read (5/28/22): Finished the first book, 5 minutes ago and I am ready for this one. The cliffhanger would have destroyed me had I not had the unintentional strategy of waiting to binge the books until this one was out.

Initial Thoughts (5/28/22): Good gods, I love this more than the first one. So fun with lots of twists. This has a lot of smut so don't read this if you aren't cool with erotic scenes. The sex scenes were well written at least for my tastes except I will review this as soon as I am able but first I need to finish my review of River of Shadows which I plan to start drafting tomorrow. Hopefully, I can post this by June 1... though I suck at deadlines

The chosen one trope is ripe with this one.

Suffice to say, it was still a mediocre read for me. The lore was the killing point of this book. The rest was just like sprinkles, it made it look pretty but the taste not so much.

*Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and the author for an ARC of this title.*

I was so excited to dive into this next entry to the Underworld Gods. After a cliffhanger that had me asking so many questions and screaming at my kindle, I was eager to dive in. And I did just that! I was happy to be back with all our characters and I loved getting Death's POV in this one.

Hanna is overwhelmed by the world around her but in this entry, she is starting to get a handle for what's expected of her and begins to uncover the secrets of her past. Her and Death come to some new understandings and their connection also intensifies to a new level. I do wish that we had made some more progress in their relationship earlier on, but with this book also having a cliffhanger (yeah... I didn't know there will be more than 2 books in this series) it makes sense that we are still working towards that.

I continue to enjoy the lore and the mythology that gets shared in these and there were some new elements included that I am very interested in.

There was a point in this book that had the potential to make me DNF.. and while I do think the author got me back on board... I really hope my issue with it gets addressed in the last book, or I will be really disappointed.

Finally, the chemistry and seggsual tension are as fire as ever, and if the Zon wouldn't punish me for more details... I would say more.. but you are in for a treat in that regard... haha! Death is very inventive, I'll just say that.

If you liked book 1, I highly recommend this, just be prepared for another cliffy and get excited for book 3.

AHHHH HANNA AND TUONI, PLEASE STEP ON ME.

Underworld Gods is a modern take on Finnish mythology, and the story of Death and the Maiden, with veins of Hades & Persephone and Beauty & the Beast. Tuoni, the Finnish God of Death meets his match in his mortal bride, Hanna, and it is 🥵😈🔥

I don’t know if I devoured this book, or if it devoured me—it was so good! And the spice, OH THE SPICE. DM me when you reach THAT chapter … IYKYK. 🙃😏🤤

There’s so many new revelations, war on the horizon, a tangled web of feelings between Hanna and Tuoni—who just can’t stay away from each other—and rich, vibrant storytelling throughout. I consumed this book and THAT ENDING. Karina you had me at the end. 😅

You can expect plenty of spice, more vicious and unruly Gods, more of the incredible AND bizarre (carnivorous unicorns FTW), and plenty of moments were you’re begging Hanna to defy Death one more time—just to see what his punishment will be. 😉

Can’t wait for the next!

Crown of Crimson picks up where River of Shadows left off. Hanna has left Tuoni, the God of Death to be reunited with her father. Her betrayal stings and Tuoni isn’t too happy that he trusted her. In his pursuit of Hanna, she meets more creatures of the underworld, including his ex-wife who is one scary lady with bat wings. Hanna and Tuoni reconcile eventually and have a creepy wedding from hell (haha). But something strange is happening in the underworld, Hanna’s power is growing and Tuoni must prepare for an inevitable battle to retain his crown.

While this was still interesting, I didn’t find as much that I loved like the first novel. I wanted more of the Finnish mythology. I wanted more to the relationship. I wanted more to the plot. There was enough to hold my attention but I just felt that there was something missing in the magic of it all.

1.75 STARS ONLY FOR THE NORDIC MYTHS AND NOTHING ELSE

He marries her by force, then dump her in a dungeon hole for days on end without food or water.
And once she gets out the first this she does is have "passionate sex" -emphasize on my sarcastic quotation mark- and forget about her near death experience...?

I know she gives him grief for his action - cause lets not forget that he chained her and treated her like a dog in the first book- but what boggles me is that he never apologized for his actions

YET Hannah ends up falling in love with him for doing the bare minimum.

Yeah nah, not for me.

Plus let's not forget the whole weird family tree that this book has going on, brothers and sisters, sons and daughters... it's part of the mythic aspect of the story but I can't -for the life of me - give a shit. I'm just over this.

I think my journey with this book end here folks. i's not fare for me to continue on with the series with my low opinions of it..

Book 2 in the Underworld Gods series.

The first book is this series: River of Shadows is an adult dark fantasy romance based on the Finnish mythology of the underworld.

Crown of Crimson picks up right where River of Shadows left off and I wasn’t sure that it was possible but I’m even more obsessed with this series.

World Building: Karinas world building is so effortless and beautiful - it’s just enough to have you pulled into the world without going overboard.

Fantasy Romance: The spice in this book is turned all the way up to ten… all I can say is chapter 19. Period.

Death and Hannah: Death’s POVs in this book lets you see a side of him that will have you fall in love with him more. He has a serious dark side but clearly a soft side for Hannah. Throughout this story you also learn a lot more about Hannah and her place in the underworld.

Karina has quickly become an “instant buy” author for me!

Thank you Social Butterfly PR and Karina for an ARC of this amazing story!

I liked this book but I have to admit I'm kind of disappointed. Even though I liked this book, I LOVED the first book and was hoping for similar feelings.

I could not help but feel that in this story, somewhere along the way there was a turn and the story went in a different direction than from where it originated.

However, I will also say that I'm attached to this series due to the character of Death. As a Hades and Persephone stan, I will not be putting down this series no matter which direction it goes. This story was HOT...especially with something that was incorporated into the relationship (I won't say what but.....WOW).

I really enjoy the details of this world and the settings but there was something missing from this book compared to the first in the series. I hope that "something" will return in the next book.

“Tell me you’re mine,” I go on, determination and release chasing me at the same time. “I need to hear it.”

“I am yours,” she says softly. “I am yours, you are mine.”

This book hurt me. For the first half or so, we have Death and Hanna at odds because of what happened in book 1.

I don’t want to give spoilers so I’m just going to say that book 2 is still kinda slow with the plot. My expectations were high because I loved book 1 so much, which is why I think this isn’t a 5 star read for me. I still loved it, but it left me wanting more. I still totally recommend this series. I love all the characters, and watching Hanna’s development is so much fun.

The ending was not it for me.
There was an impending doom outside but Death and Hanna were busy doing the deeds??? In a goddamn cell??? If you can't put your priorities first then how do you rule the dead world???

Also about that shadow self threesome something. The concept is pretty similar to Time Traveler's Wife when young henry gave himself a BJ from the future/past.

Though Hanna’s purpose for traveling to Tuonela was to ensure her father’s safety, she must deal with the repercussions of her actions. As Hanna begins to learn more about what is at stake, she slowly begins to realize her true self. With Death strategizing to save his people against an uprising, he must determine the true prophesy and just what his fairy girl may be.

“Feeling worthy of something and being powerful are too very different things. Perhaps true power is knowing your worth.”

Narrated in dual POV, the connection between Hanna and Death is combustible and also very playful at times. With Death being all broody and serious, Hanna’s sarcasm and jokes are a perfect compliment. As Hanna begins her training, and Death plots to maintain his leadership, they must navigate through a labyrinth of vying interests and untrustworthy characters.

With this creative world based on Finnish mythology, getting immersed in this fantasy realm was easy and it just kept getting better throughout as the story developed. I was completely skeptical about Death’s plan, but when it provided for a particular scene, it was legendary. Though all the secondary characters enrich this layered story, the unicorns are among my favorites.

Crown of Crimson is about fulfilling your own destiny. This book would appeal to those seeking a multilayered dark fantasy romance.

3 “boop” Stars ⭐️

This book is:
- 30% plot
- 10% Hanna’s character development
- 5% Tuoni’s character development
- 55% smut.

The plot starts off pretty much where book one ended. Hannah has just played Julia Roberts in Runaway Bride and has chosen to flee her wedding and The Land of The Dead with the help of a Unicorn called Alku and Rasmus. Whilst Hanna is flying off into the horizon, Death is having a temper tantrum and causing a literal storm. Since the turbulence is too much for the little single horned bat horse to handle, Rasmas and Hanna decide to try find shelter. Things happen, new prophecies are revealed and Hanna meets more residents of Tuonela, including the bitch ex-wife. Death hating being jilted inevitably swoops in to save the day and goes through with making Hanna his bride…now she has to deal with the consequences of her actions, whist also learning how to be a good wife and the Queen/Goddess of Death.

Whilst I still enjoyed this book, I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first book. The initial magic that was in there just felt missing. Yes, I did like the romance plot going from enemies to lovers to enemies again and that the characters had to work through their trust issues but it felt very similar to the first book in that it was almost an instantaneous switch of “I hate you to you make my loins burn in passion”. Romance is not just sex, and it felt like there was actually very little romance or development of romance. It was just lustful, carnal desire…

This book also did one of my pet peeves in writing, which I didn’t appreciate

The plot was also terribly predictable, so much so that I called the “big ending” shock out in my review of book one. I had said if this thing happens I was going to scream because it was so textbook to take the plot there it was almost lazy! I didn’t want the plot to go there because I’ve seen that story and read that book before. I wanted something different and new, and never got it.

I did like the introduction of Deaths POV. One of the things I picked on as missing in the first book was a little bit more insight into the character of Death was needed. These chapters from his perspective did allow you to literally get in his head, so he wasn’t as flat and boring as before. It was almost like Karina Halle picked up on this trend from other reviews and tried to rectify it (I am also sure that is why there is a novella written from his POV to help people understand him a little more).

I do like the character of Hanna, and she does show promise to be an amazing FMC but her motives don’t always make sense. She basically instantly goes stupid the minute Death touches her and she loses all her inhibitions, becomes nothing but a lustful and hedonistic being who just wants “release”. Death can almost instantly stop her from her ideas or make her acquiesce almost immediately with his fingers… if you get my meaning

I wouldn’t read this book if you don’t like smut, because there is quite a lot of it. I lapped up most of it like a kitten on cat nip. But there was a point where it turned, almost like I was on the precipice of pleasure and pain when I reached chapter 19.

Overall though I did enjoy it, it just wasn’t as good as book 1. I needed a little bit more plot with my smut. I will however continue with the series. I do recommend this if the idea of Finnish mythology is intriguing and the take on Hades and Persephone is your guilty pleasure (like it is mine). So if you’re looking for a read that is mostly just Death smut, this has got covered.

Crown of Crimson is not a stand-alone and it picks up where River of Shadows left off. I rarely find good adult fantasy romances, so I get extra excited when I see that a favorite author of mine writes in that genre. The cliffhanger in the previous book had me dying to get my hands on Crown of Crimson, so I dove right into the book the moment I got it. Tuoni, the God of Death, is such a freaking hot anti-hero and Karina definitely took the steaminess up a notch. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Hanna and Tuoni grow in this book.

I especially loved that Karina took her time with this book. She didn't rush and everything developed organically. I loved all the twists and turns and I can't wait to see which other secrets will be revealed later on. Crown of Crimson was a perfect blend of romance, action, humor, and magic. Furthermore, Karina's writing is just so easy to read and has a great flow. I thought this book was a great addition to the Underworld Gods series and I really hope that Karina Halle will write more books in this genre/series. Also, I can't finish this review without mentioning that the cover is perfect.

Crown of Crimson picks up immediately after River of Shadows as Hannah flees Death with Rasmus. Hannah learns a lot of information that will change the course of the novel in this action packed opening.

Crown of Crimson opens the world as Hannah embraces her new role in this world. This new role of hers also includes training. Hannah’s training sessions were some of my favorites moments of the novel as Hannah almost always learned something new. Halle’s writing created an atmospheric setting for during and after the training sessions.

Crown of Crimson is a fast paced sequel. When thinking back on the novel, there were a lot of slower moments where readers were able to simmer in moment with Hannah, however these were quickly overshadowed by the action sequences and world-changing information reveals.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the spice, considering this is a fantasy romance novel. Halle ups the tension and spice level with Crown of Crimson. In my review of River of Shadows, I criticized it for its lack of emotional chemistry. Crown of Crimson remedies this as Hannah and Death get to know each other. Their physical chemistry continues to be fire hot with a MMF scene. For those who dislike MMF scenes, you may be surprised by this one.

I wouldn’t call the ending of Crown of Crimson a cliffhanger, but I’m really excited for the next novel that should be publishing this year. Fingers crossed!

Overall, Crown of Crimson expands the world while developing Hannah and Death's relationship both emotionally and physically as the series ramps up for its climax.

3 1/2 "Death becomes her." Stars!

Well, to keep this short, I liked this but didn't love it. Dar I say, there was too much sex at the wrong time. Chapter 19 was certainly hot, but for me the emotions were missing. Now, will I read the next book? Yes! If it's not too long a wait. Happy reading!

I am having a moment to gather my thoughts. It is very rarely when I write long review, but this book definately deserves it.

This book was WOW just WOW. I am speechless. Crown of Crimson was everything that I imagined and more, soo much more.

After the way River of Shadows finished, this book starts straight away after what happened in the end of the previous book.

Hanna and Tuoni...I just don't know how to start. They  are the best couple I've ever met. The the heat between them it's not the same, it's way way way more. There is some misunderstanding between them in the beginning of the book, but after that the thing starts going in a really good pace. What I've seen as a reader of their story is that both of them are having difficulties trusting one another. This does affects them both. But both of them are growing as a people and the walls that were built starts to crumble. Tuoni is a great god in every possible way. He is sexy, smart and possessive as hell towards Hanna...all in a good way. She definately grows as a person and a woman. She is still torn between the human world and the world of Gods, but in the meantime she cares a great deal about Tuoni and his family. Even though both of them struggle with their lives, they are together all the time trying to get to know each other. If you ask me, they definately love each other, but they don't want to admit it. I am sure that this will happen soon, more particularly in the next book 😁.
Let me tell you something else. Karina was dripping a lot if teasers for the book and one of them was for a particular chapter. It was about Chapter 19. Well, this part of the book was insane. It was filled with soo much heat, flame, erotic times and soo soo much 🔥🔥🔥. After I've read it, I asked myself: What the $@& I've just read. I was literally blushing while reading it.
For everyone that will read the book, expect unexpected surprises. You will not be sorry 😱🤫🤯!

Karina Halle gives us a wonderful story about love, dark romance and mythology. The world that she has built is awesome. A person has to have a great imagination to built such a beautiful nature and main characters. My hat is completely down, because she is one of the best authors and I am in awe from her. I am in love with her books. With an arm of my heart I am saying: "Thank you for writing this book. Thank you for giving me the chance to read this. If I can I will give this book a 100 🌟.

Special thanks to Karina Halle and Social butterfly PR for providing me with this ARC copy.

THIS IS SUCH A FUN SERIES!!!! I LOVE IT!!!

Hanna, the FMC, is so funny and thoughtful. Death is Daddy and such a grump and he can be so mean but…he’s hot and has a soft spot for sunshine. 🌞 (iykyk 🤭)

I love the world building and I’m so intrigued to see where the author is going to take the plot of the prophecy. This book and series has me in nonstop theory mode and highlighting for potential clues with foreshadowing.

I actually wish the book was longer, or hope that future books will be longer. There is so much to explore with plots and relationships and characters and world building and I can’t WAIT to see what the author does next.

Daddy Deah still does it for me!!

While I didn't love Crown of Crimson like I did River of Shadows this was a good story. After the major cliffhanger from book one it was exciting to see where this story was going to go. It didn't really go the way I thought it would and at times it did. I don't want to go too much into that for fear of giving anything away.

Death pissed me off a couple of times but that is to be expected for what Hanna did. We really see Hana start coming into exactly who she was born to be. I love the Finnish take on this series as a whole because it is not something you see a lot of.

That one chapter though, in the library!!! MY GODS!!!

For sure reading book three when it comes out as well as the Death novella that should be coming soon.

''I will never love you, Hanna.''
''And if I happen to fall in love with you?'' I whisper, knowing that will never happen now. His mouth curls into a contemptuous smile.
''Then you have all my pity.''

4.75 filthy ⭐'s

Thank you to Karina Halle and Social Butterfly for providing me ARC of Crown of Crimson. All thoughts are my own and left voluntarily.

* Hades and Persephone / Beauty and the Beast
* Enemies to Lovers
* Intimidating alpha
* Badass FMC
* Easily felt sexual tension
* Dirty talking
* Forced marriage
* Dark fantasy
* Different and unique Gods and creatures (spirits, witches, shamans, giants, old gods, relics, mermaids, deadmaidens and more)
* Witty banter

There are countless phrases and words to describe this adult dark fantasy romance based on Finnish Mythology, but I will settle on this. I was so captivated by this story, that I read it in one breath.

Halle has written a story that effortlessly balances between fantasy and modern world. We get funny references of current topics, people or hobbies that we know nowadays. Many readers can familiarize with emotional hurt or struggle that is parents love and difficult childhood. Or self-doubt that we are battling within ourselves. And then we have this lush, scary, disturbing and wild Finnish mythology world that is Tuonela, the Realm of the Dead.

''That's the funny thing about mortals, they don't retain as much as they think they do, and as they age the memories slip away like sand. Half the time they don't realize why they're acting or feeling the way they are because they don't remember the moment that burned them, scarred their subconscious and shaped them.''

The world-building was atmospheric and rich. I enjoyed Halle's twists and turns (especially towards the end) and her witty and funny secondary characters (need more of Sarvi, Tuonen and Loviatar *wink wink).

I most certainly enjoyed Death and Hanna's steamy, angsty and witty banter. Dear lord, chapter 19?!! It evoke some crazy feelings in me while I read THAT scene 🥵 One certain moment was bit too far for my tastes (you know why once you read it). I would say - remember this chapter, but who am I kidding. You will not forget about it so soon!

Also, thank the stars we have Death's pov! Just like Hanna, Death also is like a reliable narrator that helps us to understand him more in depth. It felt organic. Because of his pov, we get to read his emotions towards Hanna, his family and his kingdom. He's still this sexy, filthy and brooding God, but there is more to him than just his delicious looks. And Hanna - our loyal, kind and badass capoeira ninja. I adore her. With her strength and determination, she's becoming something grander. Someone fierce and Queen worthy. I very much enjoyed her character progression in this book.

I'll leave you with these two quotes:

''I started to hate death. With a passion. That unfairness and cruelty of it all. How dare he come for my father? How dare he come for any of us? All any of us wants is to live, why can't that be enough? Then I met Death.''

''F*ck you.'' I scowl, trying to get my hands free.
''Fairy girl, I'm the one that's f*cking you.''

As it ends on a cliffhanger, I can't wait to get my hands on the 3rd installment of this captivating story.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series (River of Shadows), but this book was a bit of a miss for me sadly. Basically this picks up where the first book left off, so you definitely need to read that one first. This is a fantasy romance with Finnish mythology inspiration, it definitely has Hades & Persephone and Beauty & the Beast vibes!

The plot for this one was just kind of all over the place, I don’t know how else to explain it. Now the wild shadows scene was something lol! The audio is on hoopla!
