As far as self-help books go, this is nothing new. Each chapter is a regurgitation of other self-help concepts, with video game stories sprinkled in between (which as a non-gamer, are a bit boring). In saying that, if you just want one self-help book to read and plan based on, I dare say this book does give you the recipe for a successful life, with an ever so slight bias toward business and entrepreneurship. I enjoyed it, and it was an easy read. The approach to gamifying life was novel, but did miss some key gamification principles that are present in say, the gamificaiton of learning. All in all I enjoyed reading it.
Quick read and had a lot of generic tips for success. All great ideas compiled for gamers specifically. The writing wasn’t great, and often felt braggy rather than supportive.
I grabbed this after hearing Eric Siu speak in a live Linkedin event and was interested in his take on leadership and business growth with a gamer mindset.
This was a pretty fun, straightforward, and quick read. It was what I was hoping for in that it didn't necessarily provide anything new, but it did provide a new perspective. For anyone that is a gamer of generally enjoys gaming, this is a fun business book to go through with pretty good tips and being successful.
It really comes down to finding your passion, setting goals, always be growing, market your ideas, be mindful of what you can and can't control, endure the hard times, and find healthy routines to promote growth. Overall good life tips.
Picked this one up on a whim & I found it refreshingly unique in its take on personal development. Really thoughtful book. Eric laid out the chapters in a logical way and presented fun ways to "gamify" life along with sprinkling some cool bonuses throughout the book to engage with the reader. Not having experienced any of the new games Eric grew up on (World of Warcraft, Everquest) that he references in the book (feel free to cue the "you're old" comments), I could still relate to the stories he told about his experiences. Fun read. Earmarked a lot of practical ideas to refer back to. Also, might have to pick up a gaming console again. :)
Fantastic way to overcome and face life in an attractive, challenging and bearable way, when combined with the dynamics of a game, the person achieves greater effectiveness and satisfaction in small and large victories, whether personal, professional and social.
I was not the target audience for this book. If you’re a current gamer and haven’t read much about personal development, then you’ll find a lot of good ideas, influencers, and tools to check out. If not, you’re not going to learn much from this. You’re better off finding a book that does a deep dive on one topic of Interest.
I bought this for my 13 year old son who hates reading but loved video games. Afterwards he told me to give it 4 stars. He said it was good but many of the games weren't his favorites. I will see if he speaks more about the lessons in the book in the future.
One of the best self help, self motivate, self whatever books you could possibly read. Easy to read. Perfect balance of personal stories and suggestions to help you out for levels of life. Highly recommend!
Easy quick read with practical tips in using gaming and transitioning to leadership and succeeding in life. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Very quick audio listen. He quoted & restates many of the thoughts of well known productivity authors. What I did gain was a new appreciation for the “sport” of video gaming.
I reached a copy of the book "Leveling Up" from Netgalley in exchange for a honest review. The book is basically a self help book which shows us how to take control of your life dividing it into multiple levels and using "power ups" to take control and move up in your life. There is no earth shattering reveal in this but the simplicity and his take on how habits and personal development can make you a success is endearing. Every chapter has a couple of power-up tip and quest and the quests were really good for people who are looking out for some motivation and guidance. I liked the book as the concepts of success and how to reach it has been plainly written and the only jarring part in the whole book, which I felt, is that the same stories has been mentioned multiple times, that could have been avoided
This is a good book for self improvement if you are starting your self improvement journey. I picked up some tips I consider myself to be a medium-high self improvement level in my own journey.
The gaming methods are truely a good starting point for self improvement.
